The perfect Christmas treat for fearless boys and girls alike (and their brave grown-ups)! Nine-year-old Pippi is strong, brave and fearless. When she comes to live in her new home with her monkey and horse but with no parents and no rules, she brings mischief, chaos and confusion to the folk of this ordinary town. “Life is a banquet, and most poor suckers are starving to death!” That’s the motto of Mame Dennis, one of musical theatre’s all-time greatest heroines, in this brassy, hilarious and touching adaptation of Patrick Dennis’s bestseller, Auntie Mame. The show stars critically acclaimed and twotime Olivier Award-winner Tracie Bennett (Royal & Derngate’s West End and Broadway sensation End Of The Rainbow, She Loves Me, High Society, Coronation Street, Scott & Bailey) as Mame, and film, TV and theatre favourite Harriet Thorpe as

Vera (Absolutely Fabulous, The Brittas Empire, new BBC comedy Mister Winner, Wicked, MAMMA MIA!, National Theatre & West End). Mame Dennis and her intellectual and arty clique are disrupted when her deceased brother’s 10 year-old son Patrick is entrusted into her care. Rather than bow to convention, Mame tries her hand at a number of jobs with comically disastrous results, but perseveres with good humour and an irrepressible sense of style.

Sleeping Beauty Coppélia Swan Lake Performed by The Russian State

Ballet of Siberia Accompanied by The Orchestra of the Russian State Ballet Join us for the much-anticipated return of the spectacular Russian State Ballet Of Siberia for their new 2020 season, brought to life by magical special effects. Sleeping Beauty, the classic story of love and innocence, mystery and magic, is set to Tchaikovsky’s sublime score. Stunning choreography, sumptuous costumes and wonderful sets form the fantasy world in which the Lilac Fairly struggles against the evil Carabosse. Coppélia is a witty combination of antics and abracadabra, set in a doll maker’s workshop. This light-hearted tale of mistaken identity and confused lovers follows mischievous Swanilda, her impetuous suitor Franz and the eccentric toymaker Dr. Coppelius as they are brought to life by sparkling choreography and the animated score of Delibes. Coppélia is perfect for first-time ballet goers, families and everyone in between. Tchaikovsky’s haunting score is at the heart of the greatest romantic ballet of all time, Swan Lake. A gripping portrait of life in wartime Berlin and a vividly theatrical take on how paranoia can warp a society gripped by the fear of the night-time knock on the door. Based on true events, Hans Fallada’s Alone In Berlin follows a quietly courageous couple, Otto and Anna Quangel who, in dealing with their own heartbreak, stand up to the brutal reality of the Nazi regime. With the smallest of acts, they defy Hitler’s rule with extraordinary bravery, facing the gravest of consequences. This world premiere is adapted by Alistair Beaton (Feelgood, The Trial Of Tony Blair), directed by Artistic Director James Dacre (The Pope, Our Lady Of Kibeho) and designed by Jonathan Fensom (The Herbal Bed, King John). This timely story of the moral power of personal resistance sees the Gestapo launch a massive hunt for the perpetrators and Otto and Anna finding themselves players in a deadly game of cat and mouse.

In 1910 the unknown Charlie Chaplin and Stan Laurel set sail for New York as part of Fred Karno’s famous music hall troupe. On this journey, Charlie and Stan shared a cabin and then spent two years together touring North America, with Stan as Charlie’s understudy. In Charlie Chaplin’s highly detailed autobiography Stan Laurel is never mentioned. Stan talked about Charlie all his life.

Playing fast and loose with the facts and with an original piano score composed by Mercury Awardnominee Zoe Rahman played live each night, The Strange Tale Of Charlie Chaplin And Stan Laurel is no nostalgic bio-drama, but a hilarious and deeply moving homage to two men who changed the world of comedy forever. #TheStrangeTale Co-commissioned by the London International Mime Festival. Northampton Gilbert & Sullivan Group Present

The Gondoliers Or The King Of Barataria

Northampton Gilbert & Sullivan Group are delighted to be returning to the Royal stage with their new production of The Gondoliers. When brothers Marco and Giuseppe, two jolly gondoliers, learn that following a mix up as young boys, one of them is in fact no less than the heir to the throne of Barataria, the pair agree to share the responsibilities of governing their new kingdom until it can be ascertained which of them is the king. However, matters become more complicated when they discover that the true king was actually married to Casilda, the daughter of a duke and duchess, as an infant. The problem is that Marco and Giuseppe have just married Tessa and Gianetta, and Casilda is actually in love with her father’s attendant Luiz… Will love find a way? Who is the king? Where exactly is Barataria? Join us in Venice to find out. Combining Gilbert’s razor-sharp wit with some of Sullivan’s best loved and most memorable music, director Leon Berger once more brings his unique vision to the stage with what promises to be an unmissable production.

ROB AUTON

TENDER

THE TIME SHOW

Three-time Edinburgh Comedy Award-nominee and veryhard-to-pin-down-indie-underdog-nightmare, Josie Long, is back with a brand new show after a brief hiatus, during which she had a baby and so on.

The Time Show is the latest comedy/theatre/spoken word show by the writer and performer (of some of what he writes), Rob Auton.

It’s about the mind-bending intensity of new motherhood, but mostly about kindness, gentleness, and joy – all in all, the edgiest thing you will see this year. The aim is for you to come out of it feeling optimistic about the future, although that is a big ask. At the very least there will be some really silly voices in it, and that’s not nothing.

Following on from his critically acclaimed shows about talking, hair, sleep, water, faces, the sky and the colour yellow, Rob now turns his attention to time. He will be asking questions such as “What time is it?” and “What is it time?”

BOOKING INFORMATION Box Office 01604 624811 Website www.royalandderngate.co.uk Royal & Derngate, Box Office, Guildhall Road, Northampton, NN1 1DP Group Sales 01604 620066 Membership 01604 635868

BOX OFFICE OPENING HOURS Our Box Office counter and telephone lines are open from 10am (10.30am on Mondays) with telephone lines closing at 6pm and the Box Office counter closing 15 minutes after the last performances commence or 6pm on non-performance days. From January our Box Office counter will open from 12noon. On Sundays and Bank Holidays they are open from 1 hour and 30 minutes prior to the first performance commencing. You can pay by cash if booking in person or by Visa, Mastercard, Visa Delta or Electron.

DISCOUNTS AND CONCESSIONS Under 16s, Over 60s, Students, Job Seekers and Disabled Patrons may be able to claim a discount on their tickets. Please let us know if you are eligible for a concession at the time of booking and note that at some performances only certain types of concession may apply. Stage & Screen Members also often make savings on our regular ticket prices. For selected performances an allocation of tickets can be purchased at reduced prices by Groups who also benefit from extended payment terms and a dedicated team member to support their booking. Free and discounted tickets for those aged 16 to 25 are available on some shows via our Real Discounts scheme. Our Season Ticket packages offer reduced prices when booking for three or more shows – details can be found on page 4 & 5. Only one discount can be applied per ticket and all discounts are subject to availability and may be withdrawn at any time. When booking performances that allow free entry for babes-in-arms, please inform Box Office how many you will be bringing. Age limits for free babes-in-arms tickets can vary.

TRANSACTION FEE A transaction charge of £3.50 applies to all bookings of £20 and over, except for Members, Disabled Patrons and Group Bookers. This charge is only applicable per-booking and not per-ticket. The transaction charge exists to support the running costs of Royal & Derngate. As ticket revenue is divided between many different parties, an increase in ticket prices may not necessarily

benefit the theatre. By adding a transaction charge, we ensure that every penny goes directly to Royal & Derngate. We will tell you about these charges, whether you are booking online, over the phone or at the counter.

POSTAGE FEE There is a £1.50 fee applicable to post your tickets to a UK address. We recommend that we do not post any tickets booked within seven days of the performance date, and instead will hold them at the Box Office for collection.

CONDITIONS OF SALE Please note that once purchased tickets cannot be refunded. Ticket exchanges may be offered for the same production on payment of a small per ticket fee. For sold-out shows we will accept returned tickets for re-sale up to 24 hours prior on the understanding that a gift voucher (less transaction fees) will be provided if the tickets are re-sold. Any tickets found to be sold via an unauthorised agent may be void without refund and the ticket holder refused entry.

STAYING IN TOUCH Our Box Office and website will ask when you book if you want to receive further information from us about Royal & Derngate’s events and activities. We will then record your wishes and use them to inform what you receive from us in future. You can update these preferences at any time by accessing your account via our website or by calling Box Office. Full information on how we use your data can be found at www.royalandderngate.co.uk/privacy.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS All details are correct at time of going to print. We reserve the right to make any alterations to the programme, performers, times, ticket prices and Box Office opening hours. All concessions are subject to availability and some may only be available for a limited period. All prices are subject to change. Proof of status will be required on the first purchase of a concessionary ticket and can be checked on any subsequent ticket purchase. Some events or performances may be advertised in the national media prior to publication in the brochure and this is beyond the control of the Management. Smoking is not permitted anywhere within the theatre or filmhouse.
