SEPTEMBER “How can Northampton become a New Town? It’s been here a thousand years.” It’s the 1960s and Northampton is at a crossroads. The town’s population is set to double as part of the government’s New Towns Act. But as new estates welcome thousands of families from London and the old town centre undergoes radical changes, some fear Northampton’s identity is being stripped away. Tasked with Northampton’s expansion over twenty momentous years, the newly formed Development Corporation will go to hilarious lengths to ensure targets are met – even adapting their radio jingle into a legendary pop record… The company consists of Subika Anwar-Khan, Jo Blake, Helen Crevel, Davin Eadie, Bianca Mulligan and Dan McGarry. 60 Miles By Road Or Rail was written by Ryan Leder and is produced by Courtenay Johnson and directed by Andy Routledge. Find out more about the project, including how you can get involved with its further arts, heritage and community events at www.60milesbyroadorrail.co.uk.

OCTOBER Chicago, the “sexiest musical ever” (Metro) is back in Northampton! Set amidst the razzle-dazzle decadence of the 1920s, this is the story of Roxie Hart, a housewife and nightclub dancer who murders her on-the-side lover and dupes the public, the media and her rival cellmate, Velma Kelly, by hiring Chicago’s slickest criminal lawyer. Coronation Street’s Faye Brookes stars as Roxie Hart alongside international recording artist and pop star Sinitta as Matron ‘Mama’ Morton and West End and TV star Darren Day as Billy Flynn, plus RuPaul’s Drag Race UK star Divina De Campo and West End stars Djalenga Scott (Annie, Chicago) and Joel Montague (Waitress, Fat Friends). The sexy, sassy score includes Razzle Dazzle, Cell Block Tango, and All That Jazz. With six Tony Awards, two Olivier Awards, a Grammy and thousands of standing ovations, Chicago “remains a phenomenon” (Sunday Express).

DECEMBER In a London psychiatric hospital, a mysterious patient wants out. The problem is that, to him, oranges are bright blue and Muhammed Ali is a whole lot more than just a boxer. As his doctor and senior consultant debate whether to section or release him, an extraordinary new claim causes them to become more and more divided in their diagnosis. Their power struggle escalates into a startling and provocative exploration of power and privilege, revealing uncomfortable truths about all three men. When Joe Penhall’s (Mindhunter, The Road) groundbreaking Blue/Orange premiered in 2001 it won the Olivier, Critics’ Circle and Evening Standard awards for Best New Play. Twenty years later, he collaborates with Giles Terera (winner of the 2018 Olivier Award for Hamilton), Michael Balogun (Death Of England, National Theatre) and Royal & Derngate’s Artistic Director James Dacre (2020 Olivier Award Nominee Our Lady Of Kibeho) to shine new light upon this powerful interrogation of race, healthcare and prejudice in modern Britain.

Multi award-winning, with a spectacularly successful sound-track storming charts across the globe, this sell-out Tudor take-off has “an incredibly strong and powerful message”, is “boundary-pushing, genre-redefining” (The Australian) and is ‘pure entertainment’ (The New York Times). From Tudor Queens to Pop Princesses, the six wives of Henry VIII take to the mic to tell their tales, remixing 500 years of historical heartbreak into an 80-minute celebration of 21st century girl power. Theatre as live as it gets. Witness a new show unfold every night! You want to know a secret? The best bits of any show, you never get to see: beautiful moments of discovery, fresh minted gags, a story coming alive for the first time – all this happens in the rehearsal room. Less of a secret is that you never see the worst: dead ends, duff choices, bits that don’t fit. But what if we let you in on the secret and put them ALL on the stage: triumphs, disasters, the wonderful and the what-the-hell? How? By improvising from scratch a new show made especially for the audience that night. Story, song and puppetry conjured from the unlikeliest materials by matchless performers and every moment PARRY of creation (or lack of it) witnessed by you. Definitely not an attempt to improvise the “classic” musical but an unapologetic experiment in starting with nothing and seeing where we end up. Improbable are maestros of improvised theatre, who for three decades have created make-it-up-as-you-go-along shows that have captivated audiences across the world from off-Broadway to the National Theatre. It might be hilarious or heart-breaking, anarchic or eerily atmospheric but their first ever improvised musical aims to spin theatrical magic out of thin air. This is essential viewing for anyone who likes their theatre as live as it gets. This production has been made with the support of Arts Council England’s Ambition for Excellence fund.

I Blame The Parents is the fourth national tour for Geoff Norcott, following on the back of Conswervative, Traditionalism and Taking Liberties.

Jonathan Pie’s acclaimed, sell-out show Fake News finally returns, updated and remixed for a postCorona world. After months stuck in lockdown, he returns to the road to discuss how Corona has changed the world… and his career prospects.

This time Geoff talks less politics (alright, there will probably be a bit), but this brand-new show will mostly explore personal responsibility, parenting and who should take the blame when things go wrong. Sun 6 February 2022 7.30pm DERNGATE Tickets from £17 Concessions, Family and Schools discounts available

Conductor Jamie Phillips’ dynamic presence makes him perfectly suited to this concert’s captivating programme of great orchestral music.

Sir Karl Jenkins is best known for his acclaimed Adiemus songs and the timeless choral masterpiece, The Armed Man: A Mass For Peace, which combines the traditional Latin mass text with musical influences from both Western and Eastern traditions.

Jamie Phillips conducts

Each movement in Elgar’s Enigma Variations is dedicated to a friend of the great British composer: listen out for chattering strings and stammering woodwinds! Popular works by Grieg and Delius also feature, while masterful violinist Irène Duval performs Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto, a piece that is full of sweeping melodies and sparkling virtuosity.

This concert, which also features the Northampton Bach Choir, includes two gems of the English symphonic repertoire with Walton’s Portsmouth Point, a perfect musical picture postcard of the English seaside, and Elgar’s Introduction and Allegro.

Visit With Confidence We understand many audience members will be coming back to the venue for the first time in a while this Autumn. We want to reassure you that it is our absolute priority to ensure that our theatre and filmhouse spaces remain as Covid‑safe, accessible and welcoming as possible for all of our audiences, staff and artists. Our Covid-safe measures are constantly being reviewed and updated in line with Government guidelines and currently include:

All auditorium and front of house spaces are subject to rigorous cleaning and sanitising between performances.

Touch free hand sanitising points are available around the building and we encourage you to use these as you enter. The wearing of face coverings is strongly recommended, especially while moving around inside the venue. Not only is this a courtesy to your fellow audience members but in doing so, you continue to prioritise the safety of our essential front line staff. They will all continue to wear face coverings. In line with our ‘Book with Confidence, Exchange with Ease’ pledge, adopted in conjunction with UK Theatre, if you cannot attend a performance due to Covid, our Box Office team will be happy to exchange your tickets to another performance or issue a credit note up to 24 hours prior to the show. All transactions at our theatre bars are cashless and paperless, with perspex screens fitted at all sale points.

Box Office 01604 624811

If you have any access requirements, please alert us when you arrive so we are able to help accommodate you appropriately and help avoid any unnecessary queuing. We are continuing to offer some entirely socially distanced performances, as well as socially distanced sections of the auditoria for some performances; Contact Box Office on 01604 624811 or via email at boxoffice@ royalandderngate.co.uk for further information. We are using e-tickets which can be checked hands free. If your tickets were carried over from an earlier rescheduled date you will receive a new updated set to the email address on your account no later than 48 hours before the show. You can either print these off or present them for scanning on your phone. We are encouraging patrons to bring as few personal belongings as possible. Do make sure you have something warm to wear – our increased ventilation and airflow means it may feel a few degrees cooler than normal. We are proud to be a See It Safely accredited venue, in association with Society of London Theatres and UK Theatre.

Booking Information BOX OFFICE OPENING HOURS

exists to support the running costs of Royal & Derngate.

Our Box Office is open from 10am until 15 minutes after the last performances commences Tuesday-Saturday. Counter service is available from 12noon. On Sundays, Mondays and Bank Holidays it is open in person only from 1 hour and 30 minutes prior to the first performance commencing. We are now a cash-free venue, in order to reduce contact at our bars and Box Office. We accept all major credit and debit cards, Apple Pay or Google Pay. You can also pay with National Theatre Tokens or Royal & Derngate gift vouchers.

As ticket revenue is divided between many different parties, an increase in ticket prices may not necessarily benefit the theatre. By adding a transaction charge, we ensure that every penny goes directly to Royal & Derngate. We will continue to tell you about these charges when you book tickets with us.

DISCOUNTS/CONCESSIONS Under 16s, Over 60s, Students, Job Seekers and Disabled Patrons may be able to claim a discount on their tickets. Please let us know if you are eligible for a concession at the time of booking and note that at some performances only certain types of concession may apply. • Stage & Screen Members also often make savings on our regular ticket prices. • For selected performances an allocation of tickets can be purchased at reduced prices by Groups who also benefit from extended payment terms and a dedicated team member to support their booking. • Our Season Ticket packages offer reduced prices when booking for three or more shows – details on page 4. • Only one discount can be applied per ticket and all discounts are subject to availability and may be withdrawn at any time. • When booking performances that allow free entry for babes-in-arms, please inform Box Office how many you will be bringing. Age limits for free babes-in-arms tickets can vary.

TICKET DELIVERY Tickets can be sent electronically free of charge and may be printed at home or displayed on a smart phone upon entry. There is a £1.50 fee applicable to post your tickets to a UK address. We recommend that we do not post any tickets booked within 10 days of the performance, and instead will hold them at the Box Office for collection and £1 fee applies for this service.

TRANSACTION FEE A transaction charge of £3.50 applies to all bookings of £20 and over, except for Members, Disabled Patrons and Group Bookers. This charge is only applicable per‑booking and not per-ticket. The transaction charge

CONDITIONS OF SALE Once purchased, tickets are non-refundable except where a show is cancelled or postponed. Ticket exchanges may be offered for the same production on payment of a small per ticket fee. For sold out shows we will accept returned tickets for re-sale up to 24 hours prior on the understanding that a gift voucher (less transaction fees) will be provided if the tickets are re-sold. Any tickets found to be sold via an unauthorised agent may be void without refund and the ticket holder refused entry. When booking, customers now have the option to add refund protection to their tickets via a third party provider, Booking Protect. This protects your ticket should you be unable to attend a show for reasons outside of your control such as illness. Please visit our website for full details on our conditions of sale.

STAYING IN TOUCH Our Box Office and website will ask when you book if you wish to receive further information from us about Royal & Derngate’s events and activities. We will record your wishes and use them to inform what you receive from us in future. You can update these preferences at any time by accessing your account via our website or by calling Box Office. Full information on how we use your data can be found at www.royalandderngate.co.uk/privacy.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS All details were correct at time of going to print. We reserve the right to make any alterations to the programme, performers, times, ticket prices and Box Office opening hours. All concessions are subject to availability and some may only be available for a limited period. All prices are subject to change. Proof of status will be required on the first purchase of a concessionary ticket and can be checked on any subsequent ticket purchase. Some events or performances may be advertised in the national media prior to publication in the brochure and this is beyond the control of the Management.
