Bill Kenwright presents
“EXHILARATING... ONE OF THE BEST MUSICALS EVER WRITTEN” SUNDAY TIMES
Maureen Nolan
Written by Willy Russell, the legendary Blood Brothers tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with fateful consequences. Starring Maureen Nolan as Mrs Johnstone, the superb score includes Bright New Day, Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True.

Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the multi‑award winning Blood Brothers. Bill Kenwright’s production surpassed 10,000 performances in London’s West End, one of only three musicals ever to achieve that milestone. It has been affectionately christened the Standing Ovation Musical, as inevitably it; “brings the audience cheering to its feet and roaring its approval” (Daily Mail). The multi-talented and irrepressible Brian Conley returns to the stage in his all-new variety show.
Forming the centrepiece of this concert, between Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony and Elgar’s ‘Enigma’ Variations, Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto is full of romantic melodies and exuberant themes, and in the hands of Chloë Hanslip, this is sure to be a performance of virtuosity and sensitivity. Although Schubert intended further movements, his ‘unfinished’ two-movement symphony seems curiously perfect.
A regular of Saturday night TV in the late ’90s, in recent years Brian has appeared more on stage than screen. In this show he will showcase his unique sense of comedy and comic timing, as well as performing songs from some of the award-winning West End musicals in which he has starred, including Hairspray, Jolson and Me And My Girl.

A huge thank you to those of you who joined us for our first Made In Northampton productions of the season, A Tale Of Two Cities and The Body Of An American, and for all the feedback that so many of you have provided on both shows. It is great to have kicked off our 2014 season with such a warm response and I am excited to now look ahead to the rest of the year. Firstly, I am delighted to announce that Michael Longhurst will direct Patrick Marber’s Dealer’s Choice for us in May. Michael recently directed The World Of Extreme Happiness at the National Theatre and his remarkable production of Constellations was one of the West End’s most celebrated productions last year. Dealer’s Choice follows hot on the heels of Every Last Trick, a new version of a dazzling Feydeau farce by Tamsin Oglesby, featuring members of Spymonkey and Told By An Idiot theatre companies. Meanwhile, Phil Porter’s magical adaptation of Tove Jansson’s Moominsummer Madness will play in our Underground Studio, co-directed by Associate Director Dani Parr and featuring extraordinary puppets by Little Angel Theatre. It will be the fourth world premiere to play in Northampton in less than two months in a season in which we have commissioned 12 writers and composers – ranging from Oscar and Olivier Award-winners to the most exciting of new voices – to create original work for our stages. It was thrilling to see such a large community ensemble of local performers join the cast of A Tale Of Two Cities and rewarding for us to see our audiences acknowledge the vital contribution they all made. In the coming months, there will be many more ways for our community to get involved – from the hundreds who will share their stories and memories of Northampton with Story Hunt in June, to those who will help us commemorate the start of the First World War in September with a wide range of arts and cultural events taking place across the town, curated jointly with Northampton Museum and Art Gallery. These events are timed to coincide with our world premiere production of Pat Barker’s Regeneration, which is adapted by Nicholas Wright and will tour the country after opening in Northampton. In the Autumn I will be directing Tennessee Williams’ Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, a Made In Northampton production that will also visit Manchester and Newcastle and which features original music by the Mojo Award-winning band White Lies. I hope that you enjoy reading about all the upcoming shows in our season and look forward to seeing you at Royal & Derngate this year. James Dacre Artistic Director

A charming politician and his glamorous new wife evoke a picture of marital bliss. Her first husband was a liar and a cheat. Her second is a different batch of chromosomes altogether. Not only is he chairman of the Feminist Forum but he clearly adores her. He says so, repeatedly, usually on Thursday nights when he goes out to ‘stretch his legs’. Her suspicions are obviously hormonal. But when he resorts to illusion to maintain the delusion, well, there’s a lot of confusion. If experience has taught her anything it’s the need to fight fire with fire, lies with more lies and every last trick with pure magic… A comic marvel from the master of French farce, Georges Feydeau, Every Last Trick is an ingenious look at the game of infidelity and marriage, given fresh life by playwright Tamsin Oglesby (Really Old, Like 45, National Theatre; The Mouse And His Child, RSC). It is directed by Paul Hunter, uniting the comic talents of members of leading theatre companies Spymonkey (whose previous collaborations with Royal & Derngate include Oedipussy) and Told By An Idiot for the very first time.

Moominsummer Madness finds the Moomins aboard a floating theatre after a huge flood sweeps through the valley. Mysterious things start to happen. Why is there a door in the floor? Why does the scenery start changing? And where do Moomintroll, Little My and Snork Maiden disappear to? The only way of bringing all the family back together, it seems, is to put on a play! Royal & Derngate’s Dani Parr (Flathampton, Humbug!), Polka Theatre’s Peter Glanville (We’re Going On A Bear Hunt) and Little Angel Theatre’s celebrated puppet-maker Lyndie Wright collaborate with Bruntwood Prize-winning writer Phil Porter (Starseeker) to create another example of brilliant and inventive children’s theatre.

Play the man, not the cards Family, friendship and honour are tested in Patrick Marber’s (Closer, Notes On A Scandal) brilliantly funny story of male camaraderie and obsession, set in the gritty world of amateur poker. When first staged at the National Theatre in 1995, the play won the Evening Standard Award for Best Comedy. This new production is directed by Michael Longhurst. Michael has recently enjoyed huge critical acclaim for The World Of Extreme Happiness at the National Theatre and his production of Constellations in the West End won the Evening Standard Award for Best Play and received four Olivier nominations. He also directed Academy Award nominee Jake Gyllenhaal in his American stage debut If There Is I Haven’t Found It Yet.

Marking the centenary of the start of the First World War, this new dramatisation of Pat Barker’s haunting Booker-nominated novel is adapted by Olivier Award-winning playwright Nicholas Wright (His Dark Materials, Vincent In Brixton) and opens at Royal & Derngate prior to its national tour. Craiglockhart War Hospital, Scotland 1917. Poet and soldier Siegfried Sassoon has been institutionalised in an attempt to undermine his public disapproval of the war. His Army Psychiatrist, Dr William Rivers, has been tasked with returning shell-shocked officers to the trenches, yet under Sassoon’s influence, has become tormented by the morality of what is being done in the name of medicine. Reminding us that some of the most intimate of friendships are borne from the most brutal of conflicts, Regeneration is a compellingly compassionate look at a nihilistic war and the devastating effect it had on a generation of young men. The stifling heat of the plantation. A relationship on the brink. A night of bourbon-soaked confrontations and a family dynasty in crisis. Tennessee Williams’ Pulitzer prize-winning Cat On A Hot Tin Roof remains one of the stage’s most seductive evocations of the Deep South. Brimming with emotional intensity, this powerful family drama sees Maggie the Cat and her husband Brick return to his home on the night of patriarch and cotton tycoon Big Daddy’s 65th birthday. Keeping from him the news that he is dying, the evening spirals into disaster as the family scramble to secure their part of his inheritance. Life-altering secrets are revealed and tensions explode as Artistic Director James Dacre’s exciting new staging, with original music by MOJO and Q Award-winning band White Lies brings a scorching intensity to Williams’ classic tale. “Tennessee Williams’ best play” Michael Billington, The Guardian Part of 2014 season ticket

ANTIGONE
FRI 18 & SAT 19 JULY 7.30PM A state ravaged by war is reborn under the tyrannical rule of King Creon. Demonstrating his power over the citizens of Thebes, Creon declares that two warrior brothers are divided in death; one an honoured hero and the other a traitor to be left unburied and unsanctified for carrion birds to devour. Defying the King’s edict, Antigone buries her brother’s body, challenging the social and political hierarchy with tragic consequences for all. In a contemporary staging of Sophocles’ Ancient Greek play, Antigone explores the question of state control versus individual will and the power of love over law in a dramatic story that still resonates today. When the downtrodden beasts of Manor Farm oust the drunken farmer, all are awash in collectivist zeal. But soon the pigs succumb to the temptations of power and privilege. George Orwell’s classic dystopian tale explores what occurs when corruption and greed are met with indifference and ignorance.
Someone sneezes. Someone shares a secret. Someone won’t answer the door. Someone put an elephant on the stairs. Someone is her brother’s mother. Someone hates irrational numbers. Someone told the police. Someone got a message from the traffic light. Someone’s never felt like this before.

TUE 28 OCTOBER – SAT 1 NOVEMBER Eves 7.30pm, Sat Matinee 2.30pm Set in an island paradise during World War II, two parallel love stories are threatened by the dangers of prejudice and war. When Nellie, a nurse from Arkansas, falls in love with a mature French planter, Emile, she learns that the mother of his children was an island native. Unable to turn her back on the prejudices with which she was raised, she refuses Emile’s proposal of marriage. Meanwhile, the strapping Lieutenant Joe Cable denies himself the future he wants with a Tonkinese girl because of the same fears that haunt Nellie. When Emile is recruited to accompany Joe on a dangerous mission, Nellie realises that she must seize her own chance of happiness, and is forced to confront her prejudices. Accompanied by the music of Rodgers and Hammerstein and lyrics of Hammerstein and Joshua Logan, South Pacific is performed by Northampton Musical Theatre Company. Seating plan
Derngate Auditorium This seating plan give a general overview of the Derngate auditorium in a standard format. Due to the great variety of events we put on there are a range of other formats. We hope that this image will assist you when choosing your seats, but would recommend that you check with Box Office which format is being used for any given event before purchasing.
You can pay by cash if booking in person or by Visa, Mastercard, Visa Delta, Maestro or Electron
RESERVATIONS Ticket reservations must be paid for within four days of booking (excluding Groups). We are unable to reserve tickets without payment within seven days prior to the performance.
POSTAGE FEE There is a 75p fee applicable to post your tickets to a UK address. We recommend that we do not post any tickets booked within seven days of the performance date, and instead will hold them at the Box Office for collection.
BOOKING FEES All online and telephone bookings are subject to a £2.50 transaction fee. Friends, Gold Supporters, Disabled Patrons, and Group Bookings are exempt. This fee does not apply to those booking in person at the Box Office and, unlike many other theatres, is only applicable per-booking and not per-ticket. It has been introduced to support the running costs of Royal & Derngate. As ticket revenue is divided between many different parties, an increase in ticket prices may not necessarily benefit the theatre. By adding a small transaction charge, we ensure that every penny goes directly to Royal & Derngate.
GIFT VOUCHERS Gift Vouchers for Royal & Derngate and the Errol Flynn Filmhouse are available to buy from the Box Office in any denomination. We also sell National Theatre Tokens.
CONDITIONS OF SALE Please note that we are unable to refund or exchange tickets. For sold-out shows only, we will accept returned tickets for re-sale, providing a gift voucher for the full amount in return. Please note: Information is correct at the time of going to press. We reserve the right to make any alterations to the programme, performers, times, ticket prices and Box Office opening hours. Every effort will be made to advertise changes in the local press. Some events or performances may be advertised in the national media prior to publication in the brochure and this is beyond the control of the Management.
Royal Auditorium Boxes in the Royal Auditorium are sold subject to technical requirements and may not be available for purchase.
