Alongside the wide range of visiting shows carefully programmed by our team, do look out for our new season of home-grown Made in Northampton productions. Our Fringe First award-winning Education, Education, Education (p. 12) returns in May and then The Lovely Bones (p. 18) will be adapted by Bryony Lavery from Alice Sebold’s ground-breaking novel in September. Joe Simpson’s memoir Touching The Void (p. 22) is reimagined by David Greig in October and our Royal Christmas show will be The Worst Witch (p. 28), based upon Jill Murphy’s much-loved series, whilst Julia Donaldson returns to our Underground Studio with The Everywhere Bear (p. 27). 2017 Nobel Prize winner Kazuo Ishiguro’s The Remains Of The Day (p. 30), will conclude the season. These productions will go on to tour to 85 venues across the UK after their world premieres here in Northampton. This month we also launch our Generate (p. 46) showcase evenings for Northamptonshire artists to perform their new work in The Royal. These will complement the wide range of other ways that members of our community can Get Involved (p. 48) in the creative life of their local theatre.

A KNEEHIGH AND BRISTOL OLD VIC PRODUCTION
WRITTEN BY
DANIEL JAMIESON EMMA RICE
DIRECTED BY
Here is your chance to see one of the UK’s most exciting touring theatre companies perform their final, acclaimed production with Artistic Director Emma Rice (Brief Encounter, 2009; Spymonkey’s Oedipussy, 2012) at the helm. Meet Marc and Bella Chagall. The flying lovers of Vitebsk. Partners in life and on canvas, Marc and Bella are immortalised as the picture of romance. But whilst on canvas they flew, in life they walked through some of the most devastating times in history. This magnificent production is drawn in a theatrical language as fluid as Chagall’s paintings, and woven throughout with music and dance inspired by Russian Jewish tradition. It “wraps you in the soaring giddiness and deep solace of overwhelming love” (Financial Times). Winner of the Carol Tambor Best of Edinburgh Award 2017, Daniel Jamieson’s The Flying Lovers Of Vitebsk traces this young couple as they navigate the Pogroms, the Russian Revolution, and each other.

HHHHH “A CHEERFUL, CHARMING, PERFECTLY PLEASANT AFFAIR” THE STAGE
The Importance Of Being Earnest, by the master of comedy Oscar Wilde, comes to Northampton in this wonderfully witty, deliciously decadent and classic revival. Jack wishes to marry Algernon’s cousin the beautiful Gwendolen but first he must convince her mother, the fearsome Lady Bracknell, of the respectability of his parents and his past. For Jack, however, this is not as easy as it sounds, having started life abandoned in a handbag at Victoria station.
Watch as town and country clash in a brilliant and wildly funny story of romance and identity. The production stars Gwen Taylor (Coronation Street, Duty Free and Barbara) as the formidable Lady Bracknell, Susan Penhaligon (Bouquet Of Barbed Wire and A Fine Romance) as the hapless Miss Prism, Downton Abbey favourite Thomas Howes as Algernon and Broadway and West End star Kerry Ellis as Gwendolen.*

It’s May 1997. Tony Blair has won the election and Katrina And The Waves have won Eurovision. Channel 5 is a month old. No one knows who Harry Potter is. Britain is the coolest place in the world. At the local secondary school it’s a different story. Miss Belltop‑Doyle can’t control her year 10s, Mr Pashley has been put in charge of a confiscated tamagotchi and Miss Turner is hoping that this muck-up day goes smoother than the last. Tobias, the German language assistant, watches on. Things can only get better...
Devised by The Wardrobe Ensemble, who use their trademark inventive theatricality and irreverent humour to explore the stories that have shaped our recent political history, Education, Education, Education is a love letter to the schools of the ’90s. It asks big questions about a country in special measures, exploring what we are taught and why, and where responsibility lies. We are thrilled to revive our Fringe First and Stage Ensemble Award-winning production for a National tour and London transfer. #Education18

What happens when you look death squarely in the face and how do you find the strength to crawl back towards life? Joe Simpson’s best-selling memoir, turned BAFTA‑winning film, charts his struggle for survival in the Andes in 1985. The heart of the story is Joe’s mental battle as he teeters on the brink of death and despair in a crevasse from which he can’t possibly climb to safety. Alongside this is the appalling dilemma of Simon Yates, perched on an unstable snow-cliff, battered by freezing winds and desperate to rescue his injured climbing partner who hangs from a rope below him.

COME TO WHERE I’M FROM
60 MILES BY ROAD OR RAIL
THU 27 SEPTEMBER 7.45PM
FRI 28 SEPTEMBER 7.45PM
Since 2010 writers from across the UK have returned to their home-towns to pen plays about the places that shaped them. These plays commissioned by Royal & Derngate and Paines Plough are performed by the playwrights themselves, coming home to tell their tale.
It’s 1968 and Northampton is on the verge of great change: it is becoming a ‘New Town’. The Northampton Development Corporation has been established. An advertising jingle has been re-released as a pop record. But as thousands of families flock in, some are concerned that Northampton’s identity is starting to slip away…
Now Come To Where I’m From visits Northants to invite four of the city’s finest playwrights to join this celebrated project. TICKETS £10 ROYAL
Directed by Andy Routledge and created with local artists and local people, 60 Miles By Road Or Rail presents a playful retelling of Northampton’s past. TICKETS £10 ROYAL
