Welcome to the 2013/14 Orchestral Season at Royal & Derngate We are delighted to present another series of first-rate classical performances for our 2013/14 Orchestral Season. With our new, improved subscription packages you could now make even more savings if you book for four or more concerts. If you book for all seven you can enjoy a 20% discount. The season includes six concerts by our Resident Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and we are thrilled to be welcoming world-class soloists, including acclaimed British pianist John Lill, who celebrates his 70th birthday with a concert including Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No.3, and renowned guitarist John Williams, who will perform Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez. There will be the opportunity to hear Chloë Hanslip performing Bruch’s Violin Concerto, and rising star Alexandra Dariescu plays Mozart’s Piano Concerto No.21 in a concert which also features Mozart’s Requiem. The RPO’s series of concerts gets off to a rousing start with a spectacular Tchaikovsky Gala in November. This autumn we are also pleased to host the eighth annual Malcolm Arnold Festival, celebrating the music of the prolific Northampton-born composer. Over the course of a weekend, the festival offers a host of informative talks, recitals and performances, culminating in a gala concert on the Sunday evening, available as part of your subscription. The Orchestral Season will close on a high with our ever-popular Last Night Of The Derngate Proms concert, when Northampton Bach Choir will join the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra again for a spectacular evening of Proms favourites by some of the finest classical composers. We look forward to welcoming you to this exciting and even more affordable new season.

Tchaikovsky Gala SUN 17 NOVEMBER 7.30Pm 2013 This spectacular and explosive concert pays tribute to the genius of Tchaikovsky, with an unmissable programme ranging from his sunny Capriccio Italien to the popular tale of Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers in the Romeo And Juliet Fantasy Overture.
Tchaikovsky Capriccio Italien Piano Concerto No.1 Romeo And Juliet Fantasy Overture Sleeping Beauty Waltz 1812 Overture Conductor Barry Wordsworth Piano Peter Donohoe Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
Renowned pianist Peter Donohoe performs Tchaikovsky’s immortal Piano Concerto No.1 with its familiar opening and fiendishly virtuosic passages. Initially disapproved of by his critics, his first piano concerto has become one of the great war-horses of Romantic concertos for keyboard. Music Director of the Royal Ballet, Covent Garden Barry Wordsworth conducts the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in this fabulous concert which culminates with the rousing and brassy grand finale of the 1812 Overture. Mozart Requiem SUN 16 FEBRUARY 7.30PM 2014 This stirring evening of Mozart opens with BBC Music Magazine’s ‘Rising Star’ Alexandra Dariescu performing his Piano Concerto No.21. One of his most popular piano concertos, with its most atmospheric slow movement sandwiched by witty and marchlike sections, Mozart premièred this piece himself.

Classical Masterpieces
SUN 16 MARCH 7.30PM 2014
Schubert Unfinished Symphony Bruch Violin Concerto Elgar ‘Enigma’ Variations Conductor Nicholas Collon Violin Chloë Hanslip Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
Mendelssohn Hebrides Overture Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No.3 Dvořák Symphony No.8 Conductor Thomas Dausgaard Piano John Lill Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Join us for the 70th Birthday Celebration of acclaimed British pianist John Lill, declared by The Independent to be “still a majestic presence... one was immediately drawn in by the unforced, unselfconscious beauty of the sound.” Lill will be performing Rachmaninov’s passionate Piano Concerto No.3. The concert opens with Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture, written when the composer was on holiday in Scotland, conjuring musical pictures of the rugged landscape. The result is a work full of tempestuous drama and wistful lyricism. Completing this evening’s programme is Dvořák’s Eighth Symphony, one of his most exuberant works, drawing on Bohemian folk music for inspiration. FREE Pre-Concert Talk 6.30pm With John Lill
SUN 4 MAY 7.30PM 2014
Forming the centrepiece of the concert, between Schubert and Elgar, Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto is one of the most popular in the genre, full of romantic melodies and exuberant themes, and in the hands of Chloë Hanslip, this is sure to be a performance of virtuosity and sensitivity. Although Schubert intended further movements, his ‘unfinished’ two-movement symphony seems curiously perfect, from the wonderful singing Allegro moderato to the heart-breaking Andante con moto. Providing a fitting ending for tonight’s programme is Elgar’s best-loved creation. His glorious ‘Enigma’ Variations include an air of mystic and orchestral flair, reaching great emotional depth in the well-known Nimrod theme. FREE Pre-Concert Talk 6.30pm With Chloë Hanslip

The Concerto conjures up the palatial gardens at Aranjuez, and, as Rodrigo recalled: “the fragrance of magnolias, the singing of birds, and the gushing of fountains”. The evening also features the new Guitar Concerto by Stephen Goss, a work championed by John Williams, and premièred by the RPO at Royal & Derngate in 2012.

Other highlights in this action-packed concert include Rossini’s galloping William Tell Overture and Handel’s majestic Hallelujah Chorus - but as we approach the closing stages of this momentous concert it is time to wave your flags and hear the nation’s favourite orchestra perform the best of British, in Elgar’s Pomp And Circumstance March and Arne’s Rule, Britannia!
