PROCESS S PRI N G 201 8

INTRODUCTION Intention. It is what defines design as design. The assumption, and most likely fact, that all the elements within a given piece of work was thought out and placed accordingly. This intention was something I hadn’t even truly begun to experience in my work before this point in time. Sure, I had been designing in the barest sense of the term, but I wasn’t thinking. I placed and adjusted objects based on arbitrary reasons, looks taking preference over meaning and impact. Memorability was next to nothing as far as my work, because I would change paths and edit things within days of creating what I had thought to be a “final” product. As my first professional interaction with design, this class was able

4 | Spring 2018

to introduce me to the intention mentioned above. This need for thought had always been present in other work, and other aspects of life, but it had never been emphasized in this way. It made me realize that to keep this up I had to want to keep doing this work. I had to want to pursue design in a purposeful way. And I had to want to actually do that. To keep doing work, to keep doing things that had purpose. With this in mind, I’d like to present to you the process of the 2018 spring semester in Art 205, Introduction to Design methods. Throughout the course of this semester, an emphasis on process of creation was put into play, which I hope to display here.

STATEMENT OF INTENT The field of fine art is an expansive one that holds many professions and many areas of study. However, a person usually cannot find interest in all of them, this is the case with myself, as I plan to pursue a BFA in Graphic design. This field is something that I feel at home in so far, and something that I am ready to put all my effort into. It is something that I want to do, and I have not felt this with any other profession or area of study. Graphic design poses a challenge to me, but in the way that it is something that I can overcome. I can work to become better, and be better overall, not necessarily because I need to, but because I want to become the best I can be regarding my work. Over the course of this semester I have

learned that this would not be as easy as I initially thought, and that there was more of a challenge to be had regarding what objectively worked overall rather than just being visually appealing. Meaning was not universal, and something looking nice was not substitute for good design. This was, and still is a challenge to keep in mind as I work, but it is a welcome one. Because of this, I can say without a doubt that this journey to create meaning rather than visual interest is something that I would like to keep pursuing and striving for in the face of my academic career

PROJECT ONE: WILL IT FLY?

This project was one that introduced the class to the Hite’s world of design, even if it wasn’t what I thought in the sense of “traditional” design. As an assignment, my first thoughts and the beginning of my process began with what was most likely everyone’s first thought, given the information about the project. I would be creating a paper air plane, and hoping that perhaps somehow the ‘wind’ caught the wings of my plane and carried it farther than the distance it would need to gather 3 points for a grade. This thinking however, changed as I saw another design being experimented with. It wasn’t a plane, and it certainly had not been anything I had thought of before, but it was effective. It was seeing this other design that truly jump-started my thinking as a process, rather than a static moment or idea waiting to be used. Before that, and before I even began thinking about the writing that would need to be had about purpose, the thought for my aircraft had been a fixed point. There had been no idea for deviation. Now there was. The first thing to do of course had to be to mimic the other design. This way, it was able to be compared to earlier thoughts and mental drafts

otherwise forgotten. How did this aircraft solve the problem of going the distance better than earlier ideas? The design in mind had a shape similar to that of a wind sock, so there would be the opportunity to catch on the air and actually glide on it given it was dropped at just the right angle. Given the way the project information said they were going to be dropped, I was not sure if that was truly the direction to follow. There was only one way to test the new aircraft, and that was to drop it. Compared to the paper air planes that I knew how to make ( that were all nose heavy ), this was able to go farther, catching itself on air in the way I was not sure it would be able to. The strange, wind sock like design had won out, and it was time to create the final version of it. While the research I did on this project was minimal, given my set ideas and the interference that came from outside assignments, the end result was something that could solve the problem given. What could fall and carry itself over 300 inches? Hopefully the design I produced. Source: Assignment Write-Up

PROJECT TWO:

SYNTAX & SEMANTICS As this week comes to a close, the experiences of the last two as far as my work begin to catch up to me. The feeling that classes are surreal and don’t exist has started to leave, and my process for creation has taken a foothold as i begin to actually create content for courses. Design methods has taken the lead, with the way the projects are something I’m actually interested in, and something I want to do. The paper ‘ aircraft ‘ was not something I was too terribly thrilled about, but researching and being able to finish the project would lead to something I was more excited to do, like the Syntax and Semantics project. A working prototype for that project can be seen here, but as of yet I’m not committed to the text formatting. Adjusting the letter spacing for the “headings”

is something I’m going to keep, but the indentation and text color of the body text are ideas that I’d like to work on, after investigating the abilities InDesign has for text formatting. Source: brookebaylisulhite205-01.tumblr.com

This project was an exploration of syntax and semantics. Syntax being how forms are displayed, represented, and placed within a compositional space; semantics being what visual elements within said compositional space mean. It was the first time we really explored the digital medium, and this project was essentially a crash course to InDesign for myself at least. It was through this project I really came to understand what could be expected, and how to even begin working with the Adobe suite in the capacity expected by this class.

PROJECT THREE: IDEAS POSTER

This project is one that i find myself extremely excited for. The thought of creating something that has a way to directly show my visual “style” and see how it stands against others’ is something that, while it gives me a great amount of anxiety, is something I cant help but want to experience. My sketches are something that I put together out of my 18 thumbnails, some of the better ones I’d like to say. My focus with these examples is more so on the shape and contrast of them all, because that’s what this quote means to me. It means beauty can be found in a lack of frills, in the simplicity of existing. Source: brookebaylisulhite205-01.tumblr.com

Original sketches.

The inspiration for this project was overwhelming. I had to bring this together to create something that would visually define a quote of my choosing. This was, of course the hardest part of the project. I chose the quote that I felt more resonated with myself, and was truly something I wanted to explore with more depth. It’s something I think every designer should take into consideration if they can. Simplicity... does not mean the absence of any decor... It only means that the decor should belong intimately to the design proper, and that anything foreign to it should be taken away. Paul Jacques Grillo

PROJECT FOUR: CHARACTER MARK

This project was a bit of a challenge for me. And by that, I mean I hated it. The conceptual work behind creating a logo is where I begin to fall flat, and the thought of doing more than one even was intimidating. There’s a million directions to go when creating something like this, and you have to knock out 999,999 of them to find your footing. The marks in the second row are what I ended up coming to after a lot of trial and error, mainly concerning the goose one ( for Veruca Salt ). I wanted to be able to have something recognizable, but wasn’t outwardly competing with what others had done before ( the cracked egg ). The

Set of original sketches for each character.

one for Mike Teavee came easier, but only because I wanted to create something that’d work with the typeface I had in mind. This project only cemented my preference for working with given content. If there’s a clear set goal, and there has to be something included, it becomes easier on my end because there’s something already there to work with, and I can move around that. The work and thinking involved in this left me dead in the water for longer than I’d like to admit. Source: brookebaylisulhite205-01

PROJECT FIVE: BOOK COVER

The feeling this project gives me is that of a challenge. I know at this point, there may be something that at first glance I may be pleased with, but below the surface there’s always going to be something to tweak. This kind of challenge is one I hope to overcome, but there are going to be small bursts of inspiration that end up backfiring, like the first set of photos above. If this were a children’s book, I’d be in the clear with it, but. As it stands it’s far too immature for

The concept matrix the initial sketches were formed from. The boxes with pink marks were ones I wanted to pursue.

the project, even if it does draw the eye and establish the title. But, with this ‘failure’ lessons can be taken, and the first lesson to be taken from it is that the type needed to change. At this point I’m still keeping the difference in case, but moving to a serif font was an immediate step in the right direction. For my own reference, I feel the need to say that at present time, Didot is my weapon of choice. Source: brookebaylisulhite205-01

PROJECT SIX:

PROCESS JOURNAL The last project of the semester is something of an accomplishment. I made it to this point, and I can continue to show what I can do with the tools I’ve been handed. At this point, I’m more focused on creating a theme for myself. I had an original idea for the layout, which while it has been effectively scrapped as I’m working on another copy of the document, there are things that I’ve come to enjoy about that possibility. The biggest stepping stone however, was deciding on how to do a cover,

Set of original layout sketches.

and how to make it into something my own. How did I want to present myself to the world with this journal? The answer to that was to go around my inability to use other fonts, and to create a simple cover using css as a base. From that point, I slapped the string of code into InDesign, and did the pain staking thing of individually coloring every word or character with a character style. I’m not sure if I regret that yet. PROJECT Ø:

PERSONAL WORK My personal work over the semester is something that has evolved along with my professional work. Though all together there is a very different tone throughout it. My personal work includes (some) basic illustration, thought I’m not sure I’d be ready to pursue that professionally yet. However, this is work I’d be happy to present to represent myself as an artist and a designer. It’s part of

myself, and what I like to actually do for myself. It’s what I’ve created before I even began to think about what I wanted to do as far as my career, and because of that I can’t help but want to present that in a full compilation of my work. Throughout this work I feel the same trend I’ve tried to accomplish in my class work. That of creating a visual style and Identity for myself.

The fire triangles or combustion triangles are simple models for understanding the necessary ingredients for most fires. The triangle illustrates the three elements a fire needs to ignite: heat, fuel, and an oxidizing agent (usually oxygen). A fire naturally occurs when the elements are present and combined in the right mixture, meaning that fire is actually an event rather than a thing.
