Choose your degree course

At Royal Holloway, we off er several types of taught and research degree courses to meet your needs: • Taught courses include structured teaching in modules and you’ll be assessed in each module as well as for your dissertation or project • Research courses are designed for you to conduct independent research and contribute original conclusions to your fi eld of study. Postgraduate diplomas are shorter taught courses, and great for changing to a new career or mastering your knowledge in a specifi c area. Taught Masters degrees include teaching modules and require completion of a dissertation or project. These degrees are suitable if you want to specialise in an area, or combine interdisciplinary study in more than one area. Taught Masters degrees are also a great way to acquire new skills for a promotion, or change direction in your current career, and we provide support for study and for your job search on all of our courses. Masters by Research degrees provide good preparation for study at doctoral level. You’ll need to write an extended dissertation of up to 40,000 words to show you can design and deliver an independent research project. Doctoral degrees typically take three years or more full-time. You’ll spend your time researching in your fi eld, collecting and analysing data and writing up your doctoral thesis.

International students who would like extra time to settle into the UK, can choose the shorter Pre-Masters programme, off ered through our partner StudyGroup. You’ll receive support on this short course to develop your English language and academic skills prior to starting your Masters degree, and it is an excellent choice to prepare for postgraduate study in the UK.
