Spring Into Putting Your Membership to Use!

A Message from the President Hello Fellow Members, I can’t believe it is already Springtime. The land of pink grass and talking chocolate bunnies is always a good time for children of all ages so I hope you had a wonderful Easter holiday! I’d like to take this time to tell you what your Board has been up to. Early this year, the Board of Directors engaged with two industry professionals (Club Benchmarking & Kopplin, Kuebler, & Wallace) and had what I anticipate will be an annual retreat. We did this to learn about the industry’s best practices relating to Club Governance and the overall operations of a Club. It was a productive and eye-opening workshop for everyone regardless of their years on the Board. It became very clear that we need to concentrate on Capital Improvements both obligatory and aspirational. The great news is how well our Club has done operationally, especially in the last 2+ years. Financially, we are the strongest we have ever been and can finally start addressing some of our much-needed improvements to our Club. One of the best practices that became glaring to us was that we need to make it a priority to use 100% of our Membership sales proceeds or Initiation Fees for Capital and not operational costs, like debt service. We have reconstituted our Long-Range Planning Committee (LRP) to help us prioritize what improvements we should be targeting. If you haven’t already, you will very soon be receiving a communication from the Board seeking your input on how best to prioritize the improvement opportunities around the Club. Some of the items we are considering are updating the interior of the Clubhouse, upgrading the landscaping around the pool area, as well as looking at our sports club, tennis, and pickleball needs. Please know that the LRPC is currently working on developing a comprehensive plan so we can deploy capital that best meets the many different desires of our Membership. At this same retreat, the Board also talked about coming up with Goals and Objectives for ourselves and the various Committees. This way we are all focused on the same goals but attacking them from different angles. This will also allow us to have a better process to transition responsibilities and focus from one year to the next. Remember we are only a 6-year-old Member-Owned Club, but Club Benchmarking has shown us that the best Clubs in the Nation establish sustainable and robust processes which help them set the standards for following the best practices in the industry. One of the other recommendations that hit close to home was having an annual Member satisfaction survey so that we can gather data to benchmark your opinion of the Club. The Board with the support of the LRPC is currently developing a survey that we hope to launch by early Summer. This survey will provide useful data for us to grade ourselves against other clubs in the industry but more importantly, help us gather feedback from our Members about opinions regarding service and current amenities as well as insights into other ways we might enhance your Membership experience. We have also taken it upon ourselves to rewrite our Bylaws so that they better reflect our Club today and protect everyone as we move into tomorrow. The Legal & Bylaws Committee, made up of several Members who are lawyers, is currently working on a revision to recommend to the Board that we will ultimately send to the Membership to vote on. One other piece of news, we have created a new email address at the Club that goes directly to your Board. It is ROCCboard@royaloakscc.com. Your General Manager, Dave Altemus, will help the Board manage the new email box but we’ve established policies & procedures to make sure everything received is delivered to the Board. The Board also wants the Members to understand that any correspondence coming from this email address is coming directly from the Board of Directors. So, as we move forward, I ask that you please be patient as we build and/or strengthen sustainable processes to lead our Club forward in a collaborative manner, leveraging best practices to gather insights and balance the varied desires of our Membership. And while we are evolving, we commit to continuing to run Royal Oaks with conscience financial diligence as a fundamental and non-negotiable operating principle.   Have a wonderful Spring and I hope to see you around our Club! Allison Zuber Royal Oaks Country Club President

The beautiful Spring weather arrived in time for ROCCLA’s Italian Night-themed Happy Hour. Soft Italian dinner music, beautiful table decorations created by Roc’C, made for a perfect evening at the Palm Grille. And the food! Mangia! Chef made sure it was all authentic. Lots of friendly conversation and laughter filled the night air. It was a perfect evening to have new and prospective members join us. Many of the ladies continue to enjoy their time together by going into the Bistro for dinner after Happy Hour. Our international theme continues on April 27th, when Happy Hour will celebrate Ireland. March is our traditional Cocktails and Croquet Happy Hour when all of the ladies dress in all white and play croquet on the lawn. Croquet was invented in Ireland in the mid-1800’s. Doesn’t it make perfect sense to combine these two? Dress in white and be prepared to be in the group photo. On April 11th, Lunch Bunch ladies met at The Center Bistro, which is part of Alief ISD’s Center for Advanced Careers. The Culinary Arts students prepared a delicious 3-course lunch. After eating, we were treated to a tour of the facilities to see the many programs available to Alief ISD students. Keep an eye on the calendar for future Lunch Bunch locations as Jennipher Ward and Dianne Williams team up this year to bring us together over lunch at new and interesting places. Have a suggestion for a lunch spot? Please contact Dianne at diannebwilliams@aol.com to let her know. The enthusiastic Bridge group has two very active groups. Nancy Richard oversees the Tuesday group, which encompasses all levels of players with a basic knowledge of Bridge, at 10am in the Ladies Locker room. On the first, third, and fifth Friday of each month, Jane Williams oversees the intermediate and above players. Following play, the ladies stay and enjoy lunch in the Bistro. If you’d like to join in, please contact either Nancy or Jane, depending on your skill level. ROCCLA Book Club met in the Ladies Locker Room on March 30th, to discuss “The Lincoln Highway” by Amor Towles. “Charleston Conundrum,” written by our own Stacy Wilder, is scheduled for our April 27th meeting. We anticipate a larger than usual group because Stacy will join us for the book discussion. Karen Shewbart has arranged for Judithe Little to come to speak about her book, “The Chanel Sisters” on May 25th. Check the club calendar for the location as that, too, is expected to be a larger gathering. Kudos to Co-Chairs Ellie Beeckman and Karen Shewbart. They continue to do a great job in their book choices and keeping the discussion interesting.

Another terrific Preservation Houston Tour, the Montrose & Main Walking Tour, was on March 25th. After we explored the neighborhoods around the museum District on a docentled tour, we enjoyed lunch at Café Leonelli. The American MahJongg group has been busy shuffling the tiles in the Ladies Locker Room on Thursdays at 1 pm. The card for American MahJongg changes each Spring and the new cards have arrived. An eager group got together at the Palm Grille on Monday to test out the new cards. Those of you who have been waiting to learn, watch for notices for beginners’ classes. Mexican Train Dominoes meets the first Thursday of each month at 10am, in the Ladies Locker Room. It’s a fun, easy game to learn that allows for lots of good-natured banter during play. New players are welcome, and the game takes only a few minutes to learn. No experience is needed. “A Fashionable Lunch” was on April 28th at Houston Community College’s main campus. Culinary students prepared lunch of foods of famous clothing designers. After lunch, ladies ooh’d and ahh’d on a private tour by Professor Alex Chapman of his exquisite fashion collection. Aileen Hansen is spearheading a new Royal Recipe Ladies group focusing on food, friendship, and fun. There will be monthly luncheons where each participant prepares one course of an 8-course meal previously assigned to them to fit the monthly theme. No more than 8 will meet in each other’s homes, enjoy lunch together and exchange recipes. Let Aileen know if you are interested in joining in or would like more information about this interesting new group. Aileen913@ yahoo.com 832-259-3328. ROCCLA is sponsoring a Blood Drive on May 6th from 1-7pm. Sign up to donate and receive a free beach towel. There’s always something interesting to do with the ROCC Ladies. Of late, there’s been a lot of planning taking place for new and interesting things to do that you won’t want to miss out on. A Cooking Class with Chef is planned for June 15. More information to follow on that. Some cultural events are in the process of being arranged. There are lots of irons in the fire. Be sure to check out our events on the Club Calendar, watch for Friday’s ROCCLA email, the ROCCLA tab on the Club app, and follow us on Next Door and Facebook. The Executive Committee and Committee Chairs are busy planning ROCCLA Happy Hours and events for 2022. Suggestions of activities are always welcomed to keep all our members assured of a great experience with our vibrant group.

What does “showing up daily” for your goals mean to you? Is it...

add a great team, a support system and a ton of talent and you have our Masters winner!

100% completion rate or any movement toward your goals?

I believe there is a lot we should emulate with Scottie’s approach to reaching goals. Each day ask ...

Is it...

perfection or progress? A top reason we GIVE UP or QUIT on our fitness goals is because we expect perfection! And when we can’t measure up to 100% we label it as a failure and quit completely. But not acknowledging any of your efforts or what you’ve learned about yourself is not right and labeling it as “doesn’t work” is not exactly accurate.

• • •

How can I do some aspects of this habit today? Can I practice my habit, even if just a little bit? What will move me further along the continuum towards better?

It never has to be PERFECT. SHOW UP DAILY FOR YOURSELF. SHOW UP DAILY in ANY WAY, SHAPE or FORM CONSISTENCY OVER TIME IS THE MAGIC FORMULA

Same old thinking yields the same old results. Use a new approach for new results with new thinking. • • • • • •

Think of making progress over perfection when it comes to moving toward your fitness goals. In no way will feelings or motivation be on point daily so don’t rely on them at all. Make a commitment to yourself to move toward your goals in any way shape or form. No matter how small, you can at least do something, even 1% of your goal and still make progress. We’re building reps here and all reps count. Time is on your side for once because time continues to give you new opportunities, new ideas and space to make progress.

Scottie Scheffler said, regarding the time leading up to his string of incredible wins, “I just kept my head down and then I started winning.” He worked the plan doing the daily steps and showing up. And

KITCHEN NEWS Dearest Members, After an exciting couple of months, including the Plumpjack Family Wine Dinner, two Degustation Dinners, plenty of new soups and new daily specials, our Crawfish Cook-off, several golf tournaments, a lovely Easter Brunch and thanks to you all for a very often full house at the Bistro, the kitchen team is getting ready for summer and the re-opening of the Palm Grille. Although all of those past events were thrilling for the team, our most exciting event was to be able to live stream in our kitchen the wedding of our beloved Executive Sous Chef, Morgan Heneghan. We are so happy for Morgan and his new wife, Kaitlen. We clapped and cheered when it became official (some even cried) and then we jumped right back into our busy service. As planned, we are working diligently on creating new activities at the Club, including our upcoming cooking classes. We have had to pause as we gather and organize the needed equipment to offer a professional class experience for every participant. This will take a little more time than we hoped, however, we are looking forward to our first class with you. Details to come soon! The new Bistro menu is weeks away, and we will be sure to let you know the timing so you can schedule a time to come by and try it. We will keep some of the favorites and look forward to introducing you to new menu offerings as well. The Palm Grille menu will offer something for everyone, both kids and adults, as well as everyone’s favorites. I’m looking forward to seeing you at the Club for more happy times and good food. As always, thank you very much for your support and for making the Club a great place to cook!!

CONGRATULATIONS TO MORGAN AND HIS NEW WIFE, KAITLEN!

ROCC SOCIAL SCENE Dear Members, Summer is upon us, and I know everyone is excited for longer days, vacation, and extra time with family and friends! Typically, we host fewer events over the summer because everyone’s vacation schedules are different; however, we still have some fun things planned around the club for those that will be in town. Kick off summer with our annual Memorial Day Pool Party on Monday, May 30th. We always have a great turnout to enjoy the amazing DJ Jeffrey, delicious American favorites, refreshing drinks, and a water slide! In June, we’re bringing back our Friday Family Fun Nights and Family Bingo Nights at the pool! Every week we will feature one of these fun events, so be sure to mark your calendar in between travels. If you haven’t experienced our 4th of July Parade & Party, you are missing out!! This is our biggest event of the year and something unique & special for the club to host the golf cart parade through the neighborhood before the party on the Driving Range. At the party there are several activities to entertain the kids, so parents can relax and socialize with their loved ones, from face painters and balloon artists to a rock wall, bounce houses, mechanical Bull, and gyro extreme! Then, the night ends with our very own private fireworks show! Finally, we will be hosting more Degustation Dinners with Chef. These were so popular in March that both dinners sold out within hours. The spring calendar didn’t allow for us to host any of the special dinners, so we are excited to bring them back this summer. Stay tuned for those dates, because they will sell out fast! I look forward to seeing you around the Club!

Darian Penichet Cornell University

Son of Ibela Garcia Jasso & Miguel Penichet

My favorite memory of ROCC is of the day I skipped school after finding out I had been accepted to Cornell. Instead of going to class, however, I headed to the golf course. Only played 9 holes of course. As far as my high school knows I was sick that day. Graduation is understood as the celebration of the graduate, but I, the graduate, hoped I could celebrate my parents. If my anecdote is evidence of anything is that I was not the easiest child, and I was extremely fortunate. Fortunate to be a member of this institution, fortunate to have led a privileged life, fortunate to be spared detention, fortunate to have afforded college, and fortunate to have Miguel and Ibela as father and mother. Fortune is given, not chosen. So here, I choose to thank you, Mom and Dad. Gracias por la vida que me dieron. Espero honrarlos en este próximo capítulo.

KNOW YOUR YARDAGES I love seeing so many of the Members using our practice facilities to work on their game. Regardless of the time of year, or how hot or cold it is, dedicated players are on the range working hard so they can play a little better on the golf course.

a variety of data, one of which is how far you carry the ball. It is very easy to set up a time with one of the instruction team and in about an hour you can leave with a report that clearly shows your average carry with each club in your bag.

When I talk to players we regularly have conversations about the direction in which the ball is traveling, but not often enough do I hear players talk about how far the ball finished from the target due to it being long, or more regularly short. Left and right are pretty easy to see on the range, but long and the more common miss of short can be difficult to accurately gauge.

Armed with this information you can make smarter course management decisions by choosing more appropriate targets, resulting in fewer penalties, more hit greens, and lower scores. Doesn’t that sound like fun?

I see similar issues when I go on the course with players. We will discuss targets and where the trouble is that needs to be avoided on a particular shot, but rarely will the player offer thoughts on avoiding trouble long or short. When we analyze shot dispersions for any player the general pattern is an oval around the designated target. The oval may favor the right side if the player fades the ball for example, but the shape is still an oval, with shots missing the target left and right, but just as importantly long and more often short. When I ask players how far they hit a particular club they usually quote me the farthest distance that they have ever hit that club. They rarely consider that it is extremely rare for them to strike the ball absolutely perfectly and that in fact, their average distance with that club is yards shorter. The ability to know how far your average with each club and its dispersion is critical to making good decisions on the golf course. This would allow you to stay out of trouble and thus avoid big numbers but also hit more shots on the green and close to the hole. It is also the easiest way to shoot lower scores as it doesn’t require a swing change or any additional practice time. So how can you determine how far you hit each club? We are very fortunate to have Trackman technology at the Club. This little orange box that you may have seen the Instruction and Club Fitting teams using, measures

Spring Member-Guest “Battle Royale”

SPRING ON THE COURSE Spring at Royal Oaks Country Club is a special time. As the weather warms, the different plant life around the club begins to shed its winter attire and push out a new flush of growth. The roses that are pruned in mid-February quickly rebound with a new flush of blooms to coincide with the peak annual color planted around the club. The many trees we have on property are pushing off the last of the previous year’s leaves, and new, vibrant growth provides a sharp contrast to the bare limbs of winter. The turf, of course, is waking up as well now that we are experiencing more days that meet the 150-degree rule. The 150-degree rule is a sum of the daytime low and high temperatures. If you are not familiar with this guideline, bermudagrass does not begin to actively grow until the sum of the high and low temperatures equal 150 degrees. This year, we began to steadily meet this mark in the first half of April.

relieve the surface tension of the greens and improve the water and oxygen infiltration into the green’s profile. Please go ahead and mark your calendars for our primary aerification closure of the year scheduled for July 11 – July 28. In the coming weeks, we will also be replacing the annual color around the club with a more heat tolerant selection of plants. Special attention has been taken over the last couple of years to optimize the plantings for this year. I trust you will again like what you see. As always, we on the golf course maintenance team hope that you enjoy your time on the golf course and around the club and look forward to seeing you during the coming months.

By the time you read this article, we should be well on our way to recovery from our first greens aerification of the year. We plan to core aerate the greens with a small diameter tine to minimize the recovery time required to achieve the desired playing surface after our aeration. Aeration is an important practice that provides excellent benefits to the green’s soil profile. This early aerification allows us an opportunity to
