La Vie September & October 2022 Fall Is Upon Us... Come Celebrate At The Club!

Thank you for all the great feedback as the Board and Management team continue to focus on our communi cation with you the Member. I hope you had the time to read my latest communication piece “Going Places with the President” our new quarterly communication to provide a meaningful update on the Club. In the spirit of opening more channels of communication, the Club will soon be introducing a brand-new mobile app to provide Members a way to improve their Club experience. The company we are using is called Pacesetter and is widely used in the Club industry to provide a one-stop shop for Members to accomplish so many things ranging from making reservations around the Club to booking appointments for Tot Stop, Sports Club classes and Tennis. You will get reminders of your reservations on your phone and can even sign up for Push notifi cations about events and Club updates. Now don’t panic if you are a dinosaur on your phone like me, Hannah our Communication Manager will be holding several in person and online seminars to walk us all through the process. We look forward to providing a new tool so technology can help us simplify how we take advantage of everything the Club has to offer. Have you noticed we have also made some changes to our Weekly Club communications? For our new look, we are using a lot more flyers and pictures so that we can hopefully pique your interest at a glance. Management is also in the process of directly connecting the reservation button to the event on the calendar to make sign ing up even easier and faster. No more heading to the Club calendar to scroll through to find the event you are interested in. All of these changes are being done to increase your experiences around the Club and we are very excited about the upgrades.

A Message from the President

We also sent you the results of the Member Satisfaction Survey, but many people have mentioned that they were so anxious to see the survey results that they didn’t notice the end of the article where we described how our Club is going to use that information. Dave Altemus, our General Manager, is meeting with each of our department heads and will present an action plan based on feedback from the Members in the survey. The Board and I are going to provide an action plan for ourselves as well as Management. For instance, many people requested that the Bistro menu be changed more frequently. Voila, Chef is creating a new menu as we speak which will roll out by September 1. Please realize not all the actions will be that quick but we are work ing on being responsive to your requests. Our goal is to share our gameplan in September 2022. As a reminder, we will be launching a second survey with Club Benchmarking in the Fall. This survey will be focused on capital projects to enhance or expand the amenities provided to our Members. We are asking you to help us build a blueprint of what you would like to see us improve or develop that will help make your expe rience here even better. Please, take the time to fill out the survey, make sure your spouse and your fellow Club Members do the same. That is how we will build a better ROCC together.

See you around the Club, Allison Zuber Royal Oaks Country Club President

What a summer we had…hot and humid... Those who remained in Houston and those who flitted in and out despite the weather, albeit in smaller numbers, enjoyed our activities. Both Bridge groups continued playing through the summer, as did MahJongg, Mexican Train, and Lunch Bunch. Book Club did not meet in July but did venture to H-Mart in August for lunch and discussion of ‘Crying in H-Mart’. September’s book choice is “The Personal Librarian” by Marie Benedict. A group of ladies and their spouses/guests went to Main Street Theater in July to see “The Real Inspector Hound”. This murder mystery/comedy was appropriately enhanced by travel on the Harris County Bus. That sure has proven to be a great way for ROCCLA to travel these days. The next bus trip is scheduled to take us to the Holocaust Museum and lunch at Kenny and Ziggy’s on September 9th. Now that we can enjoy the outside more, what a terrific Autumn the ROCCLA has in store for all. Monthly Happy Hours are a great way to keep up with your friends while meeting new friends. The year continues with monthly international themes. July Happy Hour was a joyful celebration of India’s culture while Greece was the focus of our August gathering. September will find us celebrating Scotland in a fun way. Ladies Movie night is on September 27th Be sure to wear your comfy pj’s and relax and snack while watching “Mamma Mia”. Aileen Hansen’s new Royal Recipe Ladies group enjoyed their inaugural gathering in May with Thai cuisine. They paused for the summer and are now ready to continue with a themed monthly luncheon. Check out the club website for more information about this interesting new group. Aileen913@yahoo.com 832-259-3328.

Watch for more details on timing. Be sure to mark your calendars for November 3rd for our Annual Luncheon preceded by the Vendor Showcase. Come early to check out the booths. You can keep up with our many events on the Club Calendar, watch for Friday’s ROCCLA email, the ROCCLA tab on the Club app, and follow us on Facebook. The Executive Committee and Committee Chairs have planned many ROCCLA Happy Hours and events.

Ladies Only Bingo night is scheduled for September 13th. Chef will offer a special handheld menu. This is always a fun evening. Come join us! You may win one of the cash prizes as well as some very creative door prizes.

Lunch Bunch returns on September 19. We’ll meet at 11:30 at The Flying Biscuit, 12389 Kingsride Lane. Plans for October include a docent-narrated Buffalo Bayou Boat Trip followed by lunch at PostHTX on October 13th and another Harris County bus ride. Our monthly Happy Hour on the 26th will celebrate Mexico. A Cooking Class with Chef is still in the planning phase.

Suggestions of activities are always welcomed to keep all our members assured of a great experience with our vibrant group. Sign up for events on the club calendar or by calling the Concierge (281)-899-3200.

Since becoming Director of Membership at Royal Oaks, I have had the privilege of signing up many new Members. They have all been a pleasure to meet and will certainly be an asset to the Club.

They say the first impression is always the most important. At Royal Oaks, most first impressions are made at the gatehouse. With a Royal design when you enter, it’s a fitting tribute to the architecture and character found within the gates. Then as you enter the Clubhouse the experience continues with courteous staff who garner the most attention and have become a welcome sight to our Members. We have received numerous compliments on the staff’s appearance, along with their polite and professional demeanor. Royal Oaks Country Club institutes a tremendous training program, the results of which shine through on a daily basis.

Membership Director - Terri Kennedy tkennedy@royaloakscc.com

Use free form movement in this next drill so you can increase your reaction time, strength and proprioceptive awareness.

*upper body dominant player - over rotates, slides or sways off position

1. TPI’s Feel Balance Test

*lower body mobility and strength limitations and can’t manage forces

A powerful golf swing with shifting loads and forces is a test of your dynamic balance. When dynamic balance is challenged, the brain perceives it as a threat and may protect you by restricting your speed.

Maintaining strength and mobility in your whole body is essential for balance but you can build quicker reactions for greater ground connection using static and dynamic balance drills, single-leg exercises, wobble boards and by doing foot sensory drills. Let’s test your balance and review a few effective drills.

Which scenario sounds familiar? You set up and take your full backswing, but then somewhere during the downswing you lose your balance. You actually “fall” off your spot and have to take a step to recover your balance. Or do you have a strong finish and “own” your full swing with hips facing the target as you study the ball’s trajectory and plan your next shot. I hope you experience the latter but if you lose your balance anywhere in the swing then today’s drills are for you!

Dynamic balance in golf depends greatly on “feel balance” which starts at the feet as information is quickly and directly relayed to the brain. There is a direct connection between the feet and the cortex that uses proprioception. When that connection is dulled from injuries, years of wearing stiff, supportive shoes and lack of movement then you gradually see changes in balance. In addition to loss of proprioception, there can be many other factors in play for loss of balance:

BALANCE LIKE A BOSS

*poorball connection to ground from limited afference through ankles or feet

*head movement and loss of eye contact with

Time your balance with your eyes closed to see how you rank among low handicap/tour level golfers. Stand on one leg and raise your knee to hip height. Close your eyes for a few seconds and you’ll notice balance is harder. Now for the test, close your eyes for as long as you can and maintain balance on one leg. Stop the timer any time you adjust your foot placement or set down the other leg. Tour level players can balance on each foot for 25 seconds. Repeat on both sides. This test is also a drill. Practice balancing on one leg with and without eyes closed daily so you can build better proprioceptive feedback through the foot, ankle and body.

2. Single Leg Dynamic Challenge Drills

a. Stand on one foot and randomly move the other leg to apply shifting loads to the standing leg. Use a timer to balance 30 – 60 seconds on each side. If you have to stop to catch your balance at any time just jump back into the drill and continue for the allotted time. b. Shift your weight laterally from one foot to the other foot. Try to stick the landing before you shift back to the other foot. Vary the timing.

Fitness Director - Pam Owens powens@royaloakscc.com 3. Sensory Awareness With shoes and socks off, gently massage your feet using a variety of items to build sensory awareness. My favorite objects include spikey balls, tennis balls, golf balls and cylinders. The greater the variety the better. Keep these items in a convenient place so you can use them while you sit at work or home. Use gentle pressure as the souls of our feet can be sensitive and take some time to get used to any added pressure. Practice these drills daily or as much as you like to gain mastery of the shifting loads and forces of the swing. Your lower body will be able to stabilize and deliver the power necessary without restricting your speed. DATE!SAVETHE

Dear SeptemberMembers, isthe time when everything goes back to “normal”. Kids are back to school, crazy traffic, and days are getting shorter. Time to come back to the WeClub!changed our menu in June and we are changing it again this month. After a very fun 4th of July, we closed our main kitchen for important structural repairs. The kitchen floor along with one of its walls needed to be fixed after water damage.

I wanted to thank you for your support and I look forward to your next visit to the Club.

A featured dish from our most recent Degustation Dinner

On September 24th we are organizing a very special wine dinner “Tour de France”. As its name suggests we will go all French on this one, pairing different French wines from various regions with some classic French dishes with a modern twist of the same region. We will also invite you to join us for our Annual “Dinner en Blanc”. This year we will keep the white theme even on our plate… When it comes to our commitment to using better, sustainable, more local, and higher quality ingredients, we are still bound to it and I can report that we are successfully making incremental changes in the Wekitchen.areadding even more flexibility to our menu with the ability to order smaller size salads and also turn your appetizer into a main course with sides.

KITCHEN HAPPENINGS

The golf course maintenance team has put a lot of hard work into the course over the last few months and will be preparing the course for fall tournament season over the next few months. We look forward to seeing you out here during your next round.

GOODBYE SUMMER...

This summer has been exceptionally hot and dry. We have received just 3.1” of rain since May 25 and most of that rain occurred on only three separate occasions. Coupled with temperatures in the high 90s and low 100s since late May this summer has been tough. The summer has been going by quickly and we have our eyes set on the, hopefully, cooler fall months ahead.

The summer season was highlighted this year by our course closure in July. This time was well spent and allowed us ample time to complete multiple agronomic practices around the course as well as other involved projects. The fairways were aerified twice, the greens were aerified three times plus a DryJect soil amendment injection and the tees and approaches both received a single aerification. On top of the aerifications we applied approximately 600 tons of sand to the fairway surfaces to work toward the overall improvement of the playing surface. All other short grass areas were also top-dressed multiple times in addition to aggressive verti-cutting. The closure was not only spent aerifying the golf course, but various projects took place as well. We used the time to repair nearly 4,000 square feet of cart path and installed close to 400 linear feet of curb around the course. Twelve tee boxes were selected around the course and re-grassed with Zeon Zoysia grass. The size of these tee boxes was increased where possible as well. Landscaping improvements were completed in various areas with the most notable changes being at #16 tee box, the left of #4 green parking area, and across the lake from #6 tees.

we perform during our summer closure are a key component to the quality of the playing surfaces leading into fall and are completely necessary for the long-term health of the course. I expect the course to be in fantastic shape this fall and the thought of a July closure will be a distant memory.

ranges were never designed to help players improve their game. They were for somewhere to warm up prior to teeing off. Our range is no different from every other range in the country. It is a great warm-up facility but to make it a great practice and skill development facility requires some imagination and planning on the part of the player.

Technical Development – You took a lesson recently and your Coach identified a move in your swing that needs to be changed in order to better produce the desired contact and ball flight. This type of practice is characterized by many rehearsal swings where the player is trying to learn the new move. These swings are typically slow, as at this speed it is much easier to feel the new motion. Once the player has a feel, they would hit a shot. Again, at slower than full speed as it is easier to evaluate the success of the new motion. Based on the feedback they receive from feel, contact, and ball flight, they then know what to do in the next set of rehearsal swings. Skill Development – You have learned the new swing pattern or you are already happy with your swing, the contact, and ball flight it produces. Now you want to solidify the motion and learn to produce it under situations that are more representative of the ones you will face on the golf course. This practice is characterized by the player using a full pre-shot routine for every shot, changing targets and clubs with each shot, having a clearly defined target for each shot, and scoring the outcome every time. Lastly, there is a consequence for each shot or series of shots. The consequence could be repeating the series of targets or something else.

It is always so pleasing to see how hard our membership works on their game. The range is always busy and for the size of our Membership, the range use is much higher than many facilities I visit. The question I always ask myself as I watch players practice is, “Will the practice I am seeing transfer to better play on the golf course?” Unfortunately, most of the time the answer is, probably Drivingnot.

Director of Instruction - Derek Hooper dhooper@royaloakscc.com

When you practice you should be working on one of two things:

In general, golfers are very good at working on the technical aspects of their swing they would like to improve. They implement the change, strike the ball better and see improved ball flight. But are then confused as to why it won’t repeat on the golf course.

Take a look at how you are investing your time practicing. Are you only doing Technical Development and struggling to take your range game to the course? If so, speak with one of our Coaches about how to practice smarter, develop better skills and turn your invested range hours into lower scores on the course.

WHAT TYPE OF PRACTICE ARE YOU DOING?

I describe this situation as the player is working on addition on the range and then going on the course and is asked to do algebra. In both situations, they are doing a match but the two situations are not the same.

Who would have thought that after the beautiful bunker renovation in ’21, that we’d be experiencing a drought in ’22. The great news is that it has allowed the staff to continue with small improvement projects on our course and we all cannot wait for cooler temperatures in October.

FALLING FOR GOLF

Please mark your calendars for the upcoming events in the Fall… 9/Wine/Dine, Husband/Wife Championship,

Beginning mid-July the Club began the course maintenance practices with multiple aerifications, verticutting, tree removal, cart path repair, golf cart maintenance, fleet and private cart detailing, practice facilities maintenance, and so much more. A sincere thank you to all members for their patience and understanding during the course and range closers.

ROCC SOCIAL SCENE

As I mentioned, we have a very full event schedule this fall, and we hope that you have a chance to join us for one of these exciting events. Our goal is to offer a variety of events to reach different demographics and interests, and while it is difficult to fit as much as we would like on the calendar each month, we do our best to provide a good balance.

It’s so nice having everyone back in town and starting to feel the busy season upon us again! The summer is pretty quiet for events, as many are traveling and the heat is brutal, so we are excited for what the fall has in store. For those that joined us for the 4th of July, we hope you had a chance to fill out the event survey that was emailed to you, and be sure to share your pictures with us! We love to have these for use in the newsletter, future advertisements, and just to share with fellow members.

COMMUNICATIONS CORNER

Since starting here in 2020, I’ve heard from various Members that our app isn’t always user friendly or connects to our website and I’m so excited to say that the new ROCC app will not only be user friendly but accomplish so much more all in one place. Also one key feature that I think all our Members will be thrilled with is no more logging in! Once you log in, you STAY logged in! I can’t wait for everyone to see what we’ve been working on!

I’m especially excited for all of the projects I’ve been working on to finally start coming together! I’ve been working behind the scenes to redesign our website and app and very soon we will get to debut the exciting new items to our Members!

Stay tuned!!
