March & April 2018
Spring Greetings Fellow Members, I hope each of you have weathered the cold and wet winter. I know I am ready for the sun to shine and warmer days ahead. Since our last newsletter, the Club has accomplished many tasks and I am very optimistic for the coming year. The recent bylaw revision vote was concluded and passed with a 93% approval. It included some needed changes regarding capital project limitations, age changes for children of members, and most important, some flexibility with other Membership categories. Thank you to everyone that voted. Last year we decided to invest in some landscape projects to spruce up our golf course and keep our facility grounds in top condition. During the fall season, rainy weather and the Hurricane delayed some of our plans and we had to defer some of those projects to spring. The landscaping improvements are being implemented over the coming months and I think we will all be pleased with the result. We also installed the new Turf Hound artificial practice mats. I have heard very positive reviews on the new technology and I believe this will be a useful amenity. The practice area, along with our landscaping plans will provide a WOW factor on our golf course and the grounds surrounding our facility. These types of improvements help us with member satisfaction and recruit future members.
The new chairs for the Bistro Bar and Dining Room have arrived. They look great and are very comfortable. It gives our dining venue a whole new fresh look. Our decorating team and House Committee deserve a shout out for a job well done. They were able to provide a beautiful quality product, under budget. It took a little longer than expected, but good results take time and I commend them for their efforts and the result. Thanks for the members patience on this matter. We are also working on a Long-Range Plan for the Club with some options and concepts for improvements. This process is challenging since we must consider all the variables in the club industry and what is the right direction for us long term. This will take a bit more time and we hope to have some member input meetings this summer. I know, in previous letters I implied it would be Spring, but things always take longer than expected. We want to get all options on the table. Pace and patience folks. We need to get this right and it takes time. THANK YOU to those who have sponsored new members. We need everyone’s help in keeping our membership counts moving upward.
I ask all of you to join us in making OUR club the very best it can be. As a reminder, I want to emphasize our three
2018 Member Initiatives:
1. USE THE CLUB Enjoy the club and its amenities. If you are a “power user” great, if not, please consider using the club more often. We all want to get the value for our investment in OUR club. 2. MEMBERSHIP! MEMBERSHIP! MEMBERSHIP! REFER NEW MEMBERS! Engage in helping promote our Club through positive outreach and member referral. We need to gather kindred spirits to have fun and make friends. Check in with Karie Rogers, our Membership Director on how you can help. 3. COMMUNICATE WITH THE STAFF We must program and hardwire our membership to take the initiative to make reservations. We need to become accustomed to this new policy. If we expect perfect service every time, we should at least offer the courtesy of letting our staff know we are coming to the Club and don’t make them “guess” who’s coming to dinner. On behalf of the Board and management team, it is a pleasure to serve our membership and support our membership experience. I look forward to 2018 and “La Vie” at Royal Oaks. Thanks and see you around the Club,

Ladies, our year has started with a BANG! If we were not the ones ROCC’n the club the last few months, I don’t know who was. Your Ladies Association is growing; moving ‘n shaking. Give yourself a hand; and let’s keep the good times roll’n. Your participation, enthusiasm, support and suggestions have grown our membership to over 270 strong. Outstanding, you’ve made the right choice! Our signature Networking Happy Hour, held on the last Wednesday of every month, is a wonderful time to have a cocktail and conversation with your sister members. The Wine Down Wednesdays held at the Club has worked hand in hand with ours, on the last Wednesday. It is the perfect time to ditch the dishes. You can drop the kids off at the Tot Stop (now serving limited menu items for the kids on Wednesday nights) and have some free time with the girls. Wine Down Wednesday extends past our Happy Hour, open until 8:00 pm. You have time to share a drink with your guy, order from the menu and presto - dinner solved! All go home happy!
Now that Winter is done, it is time to step into Spring. If you did not have a chance to join us on the Museum of Fine Arts tour of the Oscar De La Renta exhibit in January, there still may be time for you to grab your girlfriends and make a day of it. The exhibit has been extended until March 18th. April showers, May flowers … let’s hope for clear skies in April. We are planning to play a round of croquet at our annual Cocktails and Croquet on April 25th. So, don’t forget to check the ROCC website for details on the regularly scheduled and upcoming happenings. You never know what will “POP UP”. See you at our next get together, Your Association, Your Club – our Ladies ROCC!

Ahh…Spring! It is right and I don't know about you, but I'm ready for some longer days, warmer weather and spring vegetables. We have a great Easter Brunch planned for Sunday April 1st. We will have our chefs carving spring lamb and beef tenderloin, fresh shrimp cocktail and jumbo crab claws and of course, an incredible dessert display to provide a perfect sweet ending. If you haven’t made reservations yet please do so...they are filling up fast! The Culinary Team will be rolling out a new lunch and dinner menu within the next few months. the spring Nine, Wine & Dine event will be French themed. Please put this date in your calendar and I am looking forward to seeing you at this fantastic event celebrating food, wine and golf. Wine & Beverage Manager, Eric Blokkum eblokkum@royaloakscc.com
New to the list, it's a must try!
March and April are going to be exciting times for ROCC. April 20th will be the Nine, Wine & Dine event. For new Members, this is a Club favorite event, where you play 9 holes of golf with delicious food stations located around the golf course as well as handselected wines to accompany the cuisine. This year
A new addition to the Wine and Beverage program here at the Club is the weekly wine blog coming soon! Keeping within the French theme, the blog will be called “Vin Parler,” which translates from French to English, “wine talk.” Once a week our Wine and Beverage Manager, Eric Blokkum, will be sharing cocktail recipes, tasting notes from our wine list, food and wine pairing tips and suggestions and so much more. An announcement to the Membership on the wine and beverage blog launch date will be made within the upcoming weeks.
OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE NEW... ...WE NEED YOUR Director of Catering & Events, Allyson Brown abrown@royaloakscc.com Every year Royal Oaks has hosted the “Concert on the Green” event, and it has become somewhat of a staple at ROCC. We want to grow this event even more and build it into a signature event for Royal Oaks; one that other clubs and guests will be talking about for years to come! In order to achieve this, we are following the motto “out with the old, in with the new.” So, along with giving this event a new face, we need a new name, and we want your help by voting on your favorite! Before I reveal the suggested new names for this event, I want to provide an overview of the new and improved, formerly known as, “Concert on the Green” event. The evening will begin with a nice cocktail hour in the Clubhouse, followed by dinner, and then we will progress the party outside to the range for a 90-minute concert, and end the evening with an after party in the Bistro Lounge. There will be some surprises along the way, and one will be how the movement of the guests will flow outside…. you’ll have to come check it out for yourself to see! The concert will feature a high-end,
VOTE! high quality band, and we hope to grow this event to one day have an “A-list” band perform! The ticket price is $95 per person, inclusive, which includes dinner, open bar, entertainment, tax and gratuity. In conjunction with this new concert event, we will be hosting a Kid’s Pajama Party at the Palm Grille from 7:00 - 11:30 p.m., which will feature dinner, DJ entertainment, games/activities, bounce house, and a current movie selection. Stay tuned for more details! You will receive an email in the coming weeks with a link to cast your vote. The Social Committee has come up with some great suggestions, and below are the final names in the running. • ROCC Star Soirée • ROCC'n the Range • Soirée Under the Stars • ROCC Star Party I look forward to seeing you around the Club!

THE NEW "CONCERT ON THE GREEN" KID'S PAJAMA PARTY
The Secret to Lower Scores Director of Instruction, Derek Hooper | dhooper@royaloakscc.com
The results from this process have been amazing. The players in the Fall semester of 2017 reduced their scores by a combined 1,100 strokes. Operation 36 players of all skill levels have seen their scores on the course reduced by focusing on the shots they will play over 60% of the time on the course.
I have never been at a Club where the membership practices as much as the Members at ROCC. To be on the range each day and see so many people hitting balls and working on their golf swings is very exciting. It is less exciting when I look closer and realize that all this hard work will have little effect on their scores on the golf course. In any given 18 holes of golf you will execute the following shots: • 15% of shots with a driver • 10% of shots with fairway woods and hybrids • 13% of shots with irons • 20% shots with wedges – inside 100 yards • 42% strokes with the putter That is amazing 62% of shots played from inside 100 yards! If you were to break up your practice based on the number of times you will play a shot then 2/3 of your practice should be spent on shots inside 100 yards. Yet I see so many players investing that amount of time on their long game and treating their wedges and putting as an afterthought. In September last year we launched our Operation 36 Program which focuses on helping players shoot 36 or less for 9 holes. Players begin their program close to the green, learning to play the wedges and putt. We do this because it doesn’t matter which tees you play from, you will need to be able to play these shots if you want to score well. Only when the player can execute these shots and shoot 36 or less, are they allowed to move back to a longer tee.
What does this mean to you? 1. Make improving your putting a priority. It may not be as much fun as hitting balls but taking three or four putts per green is not much fun either. Invest time on your putting, doing drills or playing games to keep you engaged in what you are doing. 2. Practice with your wedges so that you are able to hit the green in one shot from inside 100 yards. Learn to hit these shots solidly and aim at the middle of the green on the course. There is no need to go flag hunting. If you are unsure how to improve these playing skills or need some help with what you need to do to improve, the instruction team is here to help. Talk to any of the Professionals about a personalized program or ask about joining Operation 36 for our next semester starting in April. Just think how much better you would score if you were able to get down in three or less every time you are inside 100 yards. Wouldn’t that be fun!
ENROLL IN SPRING OPERATION 36!
For ladies, men and juniors. Contact Derek Hooper to enroll. Spring semester begins in April!

Move 3 Every 30
Member Workout Kathleen Armstrong trains with Steven Islas 3x/week to stay active and maintain great health. Steven designs her workouts with a focus on full body strength and power utilizing the barbell, kettlebells and dumbbells. High intensity intervals are sprinkled throughout to improve cardiovascular health. Kathleen also runs and works out 2 - 3 times a week on her own.
(Excepted from article by Len Kravits, PhD in IDEA Fitness Journal) Planned workouts are great but sitting 9 – 12 hours daily can compound risks for cardiovascular diseases and other causes of mortality. Studies show that even short activity breaks in otherwise long periods of sitting can combat the risks of sedentary behavior. One study showed that adults who interrupted sedentary time with movement at least every 30 minutes had lower mortality risk. Another study showed activity-break sessions significantly lowered blood glucose and lowered insulin levels. This is very good news for those who have Type 2 diabetes or are at risk for Type 2 diabetes and for those who do not adhere well to traditional exercise programs. So for every 30 minutes of sitting, get 3 minutes of activity in any combination. Members who want to get creative with their intermittent 3-minute bouts of activity can do so with brisk walking or resistance training moves. Here are five simple resistance exercise circuits that can be done in an office or home environment. Do 10 of each movement and repeat for around 3 minutes. 1. Half Squats, Knee Raises, Heel Raises, Marching in place 2. Desk or Wall Push-ups, Back Lunges, Sumo Squats, Arm Punches with Rotation 3. Side Lunges, Jacks (jumping or non-jumping), Low Kicks, Desk or Wall Push-ups 4. Stair Climbing up 30 seconds/down 30 seconds, repeat 2 more times 5. March in place, Sumo Squats, Reach down to toes and reach up Keep up other exercise sessions and classes but remember to break up long periods of sitting with short 3 minute bouts of movement every 30 minutes!
Tennis & Pickleball

This time of year, marks the perfect time to take advantage of the great weather and join your fellow Members in some tennis or pickleball. If you aren’t sure who you match up with, see our Matchmaker Program below and our staff will be happy to assist you in getting connected with another Member of your ability level. If you are looking for something different, check out the many upcoming events that range from both social to competitive. In addition, if you are a little rusty and not ready to get on the court with someone, take advantage of either the ball machine or the Sportwall (located on court #6). Both of these training tools are free to all members and offer a great opportunity to assist you in getting your game match ready.

Aerification
Golf Course Superintendent, George Manuel | gmanuel@royaloakscc.com
Good day Royal Oakians from all of us at Golf Course Maintenance. I’d like to take this opportunity to remind you that Spring has sprung at Royal Oaks in 2018 and we need to help the bermudagrass to wake up and get growing. It's that time of year again where we have scheduled and will be implementing our first aerification of the year. Our first small tine aerification is slated for greens only on Monday March 5th. The 5/16” tines are smaller than Ticonderoga #2 pencil, will go down to a depth of 8-9 inches and will heal quickly. Our second aerification will be April 9th – April 11th. It’s more extensive as we hope to accomplish this work on the greens, fairways and driving range tees. As always, the practice areas will be open for your convenience on Tuesday and Wednesday April 10th and 11th. As we've discussed before, nothing is better for the grass plants than aerifying and the benefits include: relieving soil compaction, preventing layering, allowing deeper and faster water penetration, promoting thatch decomposition, and aiding in gas exchange. Aerification also increases microbial activity, promotes rooting, and improves drainage.
Conversely, failure to maintain an aggressive aerification program can result in poorly drained soil, thin grass stands and problems with algae and disease. While the vast majority of our greens came through the winter in very good condition, we did have some areas thin out due to poor infiltration and especially the shady wet month of February. These two aerifications are much needed, and the TifEagle on the greens will appreciate it very much. We will continue to aggressively aerify the fairways as well in 2018. In April we'll start with routine solid tining to a depth of 4 inches and follow that in June with a deep core aerification to a depth of 8 inches. This second aerification will bring up material from the original sand cap and we will use it to topdress the fairways. Finally, we will core aerify again in August. This combination of aerification practices will continue to help us control the thatch and organic matter accumulations and promote stronger fairways. I’ll send out reminders each time we aerify this year. Thanks for your patience as we move forward to better turf conditions for you and your guests in 2018. From all of GCM, happy spring!
VIP Guest Experience
Head Golf Professional, Ryan Polzin, PGA | rpolzin@royaloakscc.com
As we head into Spring I am excited to announce our commitment to a VIP Guest Experience. A few months back we began asking Members to enter guest names when reserving a tee time. This was to help the guard gate understand who was coming out to play. We now will be contacting Members with guests the day before they are scheduled to play to see if they will need a guest locker or anything else while they are here at the Club. This will help us get ready for your guest prior to their arrival, making sure your guest has an exceptional experience at the Club. If you are
making a reservation the day of for a guest, simply let our concierge know at that time of how we can better accommodate them with anything they may need and/ or enjoy while they are spending the day with us. We thank you ahead of time for your help with assisting the ROCC staff to create a memorable experience when you are bringing your guest(s) out to play. Our guest experience is important to us and we want to do the best we can for all of you!
