May & June 2018

Dear Fellow Members, Our Annual Meeting is Wednesday, May 16 at 6:30 pm. Please plan on attending to hear about the latest update on the Club’s ongoing initiatives. In addition, we are nearing completion of our Long Range Plan and will have our consultant speaking at this meeting, providing an overview and our plans for Memberfeedback meetings. This is a Club effort and your opinion is valuable. Please be sure and attend the meeting. Spring is upon us and our summer season is fast approaching. Our grounds and golf course are greening-up with the warmer weather and I see many Members out enjoying the outdoor amenities of the Club. I have noticed an increase in usage on the practice range, participation in our golf lesson programs and activity in The Bistro and Sports Club. I can feel the energy and enthusiasm... it is fantastic to see! As many of you have heard, our Golf Course Superintendent, George Manual, has decided to retire and will be leaving the Club this year. He has graciously agreed to stay on and assist us with the transition while we complete our search for a new superintendent. George has one of the most difficult jobs at the Club. It takes a special person to dedicate his career and passion to providing our Members with the very best conditions possible. We appreciate his contribution over his 14 years at the Club and his body of work has been outstanding throughout his career. Thank you, George, for your dedication to Royal Oaks and its Members. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I want to each Member to know, the Board and Committee Members work tirelessly to provide governance and oversight of our Management Team to ensure our Members

are provided the best value for their membership experience. This group of volunteers equates to 10% of our Membership (approximately 75 volunteers). This means our Membership has active representation in how we lead the Club each day, month and year. The country club business is challenging, and Royal Oaks is not immune to the changes occurring in the private club industry. Our philosophy for our Board, Committees and Management Team are based on three key tenets: Membership Satisfaction Membership Retention Membership Recruitment A sustainable membership level is the fundamental requirement to the operation of a successful club. Keep up the member-referrals and encourage your friends and family to join the Club. For those with children older than 25 years of age, perhaps they want to consider joining as a Legacy Member. Contact our new Membership Director, Meghan Smith, for membership opportunities and sponsorships and give her a warm welcome to the Club. Please join me in continuing to enjoy “La Vie” (The Life) at Royal Oaks and provide support for our efforts to recruit members and to also consider volunteering for Committee work or a Board seat at the end of the year. Thanks, and see you around the Club,

Wayne Prejean, Club President

Meghan Smith, Membership Director msmith@royaloakscc.com

Peter Farrell, Director of Tennis pfarrell@royaloakscc.com

I am thrilled to be a part of this dynamic team and honored to represent such a wonderful club. My goal is to help grow our membership with the intent of creating a legacy club for generations of families. Through member retention, personalized customer service and implementing a true market strategy, I have no doubt that we will meet and EXCEED all expectations.

Royal Oaks Country Club is excited to introduce and welcome Peter Farrell to ROCC as Director of Tennis. Originally from Liverpool, England, he moved to Houston and played tennis at the University of Houston as well as a short stint on the professional tour. He was most recently at Willow Fork Country Club in Katy and grew their tennis program to monumental heights. Peter developed the best tennis program in the Houston area, having produced numerous state and nationally ranked juniors, many going on to receive full scholarships at major colleges. Under Peter’s oversight, his adult teams and league growth has sustained success and often win their league's championship. Peter was the USTA W.T. Caswell Service Award winner, given for his valuable volunteer contributions to the growth and development of tennis in Texas. He also directed and led summer camp which comprised over 300 campers. Peter resides in Katy with his wife Beverly and their dogs. His daughter Kendall lives in London, England and his son Ian lives in Houston.

I live in Thornwood with my husband, Matt, and two boys, Jack (10) and Sam (3). I graduated from St. Edwards University and have always had a penchant for hospitality having spent most of my career in luxury hotel sales with brands including Four Seasons and The Driskill in Austin. My grandparents had a saying when they entertained: “There are no strangers here, only friends you haven’t met.” I intend to bring that spirit with me to all new prospective members. From the warm welcome I have already received and the top professionals on our growing team, I have no doubt that ROCC is on the verge of great things! Truly believing that the new member orientation sets the tone, I hope to implement an ambassador and team engagement program to ensure that Members continue to stay involved and feel that this is THEIR Club. All of us need to do our part to get these new Members engaged as soon as possible so that we all become invested in the Club’s success. I look forward to personally meeting each of you and your families in the weeks to come. Please know that my door is always open for you, and I will never be too busy for your referrals. Meghan Smith

the survey together, it has been a collective effort and a great demonstration of the passion we have for our Club.

Earn $2,500 in Credit Luke Drury Membership Development Committee Chairman, Board of Directors Hello Fellow Members, I want to take this time to thank our Members for supporting our new categories of Membership. The Legacy, ExPat and National are all important drivers of membership, and it is important that we continue to share these opportunities with our friends and family. As of today, the Legacy Golf Membership has been the most popular with many Members children over 25 years old, as they are now looking forward to making memories with their young families at ROCC. In addition, I would like to announce that a “resident survey” was distributed by the Royal Oaks HOA on the Club’s behalf to all Non-Members who live within the Royal Oaks Community. The purpose of the survey is to gain valuable feedback which we believe will give us the necessary information to create a marketing strategy to grow the Membership. Less than 50% of Royal Oaks residents are Club Members and we want to know why. With this survey, there is an incentive for non-member residents to apply for membership by the end of May. Non-Member residents who submitted the survey by May 7 and complete the application process by June 1 will receive $1,000 credit towards their initiation fee. This is an exclusive offer to the residents of Royal Oaks. Almost 100 residents have responded to the survey and many have begun the application process. In addition, we have scheduled multiple tours with many other residents who are interested in the Club. Thanks again to all those that contributed to putting

This is a wonderful time of year to sponsor your friends and neighbors to join. The Club is still offering a $2,500 credit if you sponsor a friend into the Golf Category of Membership. Thank you all and I will see you at the Club!!! Luke Drury

Tom Parmeson Owner & Winemaker

Tom has been fine-tuning his winemaking skills since 2005 through practical experience. Mentors that Tom attributes to his success are Clay Mauritson and Emma Kudritzki Hall from Mauritson Winery, and Bill and Betsy Nachbaur at ACORN winery. Tom has completed his Winemaking Certificate from UC Davis. He also has taken viticulture and oenology courses at Washington State and Grayson College in Texas. In his previous career, Tom worked in software development for an oil and gas exploration service company based in Houston. He spent 15 years in various roles overseeing platform and data management technologies. He holds a BS in Geology from Texas A&M University. Tom works harder now, than he did in his previous career, but he loves every minute. Tom lives in Healdsburg with his wife Katie and children, Dominic, Lucas & Jacob as well as their dog, Bay Lee.

To streamline wine service in The Bistro and provide the best experience, we now have flip decanters in which you pour the wine into the decanter, flip it upside and it pours back into the bottle. Designed for red wines, this new decanting technology enhances the wine adding 10x more oxygen to your wine in approximately two minutes time. Aerating wine, tones down acidity and bitterness, making it rounder and more accommodating. Wine & Beverage Manager, Eric Blokkum eblokkum@royaloakscc.com New Coravin wines are now in! For those who are unfamiliar, Coravin Wine Access Technology allows you to pour and enjoy fine wines without disturbing the natural aging process. When the Coravin System is in place, a thin hollow needle is inserted through the cork to extract the wine replacing it with an inert gas instead of oxygen. The inert gas does not react with wine and has no effect on the taste profile. It is one of the seven gases that occur naturally in the air we breathe and is regularly used in the wine making process. Current Coravin selections are:

Cliff Lede Cabernet Sauvignon, 2014, Stags Leap District, Napa Valley O’Shaugnessey Merlot, 2010, Howell Mountain, Napa Valley David Dubrand 2014, Gevery-Chambertin, Burgundy, France Arcanum Super Tuscan, 2005, Tuscany, Italy Piedlong, 2012, Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Rhone, France Donatella Colombini, 2012, Brunello di Montalcino My personal recommendations that are showing extremely well right now is the David Dubrand (light, elegant with ripe fruit notes) and the Arcanum Super Tuscan (lush and complex).

Sports & Fitness

Fitness Director, Pam Owens | powens@royaloakscc.com

Member Workout Cathy Staerker’s client, Rosy Zuklic, trains at the Club twice a week. We focus on functional strength training and include cardio intervals that incorporate core strengthening. This circuit training style keeps Rosy moving and motivated! She also enjoys using the rowing machines and running on her other workout days

Increased fitness comes from OVERLOAD. Overload refers to putting a higher load or resistance on body than is normal or routine. Overload creates good stress to the body which then requires a response or change. The change or response is increased lean muscle, stronger joints, greater cardiovascular and lung capacity and much more. Gradual overload can be done using the FITT-VP principle. Examine your workout program to utilize overload along any of these 6 parameters for improved fitness. Play around with one or two of these components at a time to get fitter! F – frequency (how often the exercise is performed) I – Intensity (how hard the exercise is) T – Time (how long or the duration of the exercise) T – Type (the mode or kind of exercise) V – Volume (the total volume or amount of exercise) P – Progression (advancement of the exercise program)

"Overload" Yourself Are you leaner, faster, stronger than you were last year? If not, then maybe your workout program needs a change. After all, doing the same program month after month and year after year won’t get you fitter and can lead to diminishing returns.

Examples: 1. Vary the intensity, time or ramp/resistance on your favorite cardio machine. Or split your cardio time on different machines. Try our Concept 2 row machine located inside the spin room or the upper body cycle located on the back wall of the cardio room. 2. Use bands and dumbbells instead of fixed-plate seated machines. 3. Take a new group exercise class. If you only do Yoga then try a weights or cardio class. 4. Hire a trainer for a great workout or purchase a written workout program with progressions from one of our trainers. 5. Progress some aspects or completely change your workout every 4 – 6 weeks to ensure you are progressing and hitting various energy system training. If you are over 55, have any medical concerns or injuries, please consult your physician before changing any of these parameters. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Aerification

Golf Course Superintendent, George Manuel | gmanuel@royaloakscc.com

Good day Royal Oakians! It’s a beautiful spring day out and one of the best times to play golf at ROCC! So c’mon and enjoy a round on me and Trigger! The course is recovering from our spring aerification where we used some small solid tines on fairways and greens. On the tees we used a slightly larger tine and pulled plugs since they missed out on our March aerification.

Embark/LMC have been working overtime to get some dynamic and unique plants installed over the next 30 to 60 days. Finally the MUD is finishing up on a two year plan where they have been cleaning and replacing damaged storm sewer lines. Camino Services has been great to work with and been very careful to keep damage to a minimum during this time. As always MUD 372 has had the best interests of the community and the Club as they’ve accomplished this work. Thanks to all involved!

We’re getting ready to transition our winter annual planting beds to the spring and summer flower collection. We’ll be using pink and red pentas, purple angelonia, red and blue salvia, impatiens, lantana begonias, coleus and calibrochoas…just to name a few in our annual plantings. From a perennial stand point That’s it from Golf Course Maintenance (GCM). I our plant collection will include (but not be limited noticed Trigger had a few miss-spellings but we caught to) knockout roses, variegated ginger, foxtail ferns, most of them. Enjoy the spring! lavender, mondo grass, caladiums and plumbago. Part two of our overall landscape plan began in April. From all of GCM, enjoy spring!
