November & December 2017

Greetings Fellow Royal Oaks Members, Now that the Astros won the World Series, and we survived Hurricane Harvey, I feel that we have a bright future ahead! I have been asked by many members about the progress on the Long-Range Plan. Some of you may be curious as to why we might be embarking on a “Master Plan”? The answer is simple. Successful clubs have a master plan to guide them through spending decisions. We decided that we needed to invest in this development to lay the foundation for the next 20 years. Rarely does anyone plan to fail, but many fail to plan! We will have a plan. The Committee has been developing a comprehensive Master Plan for Royal Oaks Country Club. This plan is nearing completion and it will act as our road map over the next 20 years. Our goal is to strategically improve the Club to best serve you, the existing Members, and to continue attracting future Members to strengthen the Club financially. I want to introduce and thank the following Members who have been working on the Master Plan for almost a year. They are; Janece Blanche, David Keel, Greg Cardwell, Joe Lawless, Ana Denena, Laura Robert, Luke Drury, Reid Smith, Randy Elkins, Chip Schweiger, Kathy Ellis and Mike Thiele. Also included in the deliberations and discussions are our senior

management team members: David Altemus, Maria McGinty, Ryan Polzin, George Manual, Jae Mackenzie, Jamie Heidt, Pam Owens and Karie Rogers. Please know that the Master Plan we are developing is not only a plan for possible immediate improvements but will act as a blueprint for the long-range vision for the Club and its’ facilities. Every year we invest significant dollars towards maintenance and repair for our facilities. We will refer to this Master Plan to guide us through making smart, educated, financial decisions to avoid dissipating funds on facilities that could be renovated or eliminated. Utilizing the results of our 2016 Membership Survey, and along with hours of research by our committee, and with the professional guidance of our Club planner, the McMahon Group, we believe we will have a very exciting plan. Expected Timeline – Master Plan Once our committee completes its draft plan by the end of November, we expect it will be presented to all Club Committee Members for review, before year end 2017. The review of committee members enables input from almost 70 members who actively participate in the functions of the Club. After that, we expect to host a Townhall Meeting, hopefully sometime in February, to discuss the master plan with the entire Membership. This Townhall Meeting will be an open forum discussion for Members to share their input about the Master Plan. Please be aware, our entire

membership will have PLENTY of time to provide input and suggestions prior to any definitive actions on any contemplated project. Nothing will begin without a majority vote of the membership. I kindly ask everyone to hold any questions pertaining to the Master Plan until the Townhall Meeting, in which the date will be announced with the upcoming months. Let me be clear, WE DO NOT HAVE ANY DEFINITIVE PLANS OR DECISIONS MADE with regards to what we might add or change to our club infrastructure. We have only drafted a conceptual master plan to submit to our MEMBERSHIP for input and approval to any plan that would be implemented. Finally, in case you are wondering, the process described above was carefully reviewed and recommended by professionals who have deep experience in assisting clubs with this process. Member Support for an Equity Owned Club I want to address the importance of member support as an equity owned Club. The support from you to bring new members into the Club is critical to our success. Dues are the lifeblood of our Club’s business model. Equally important is for us to increase our initiation fee. This will take time, but we will work toward that goal. Included in this newsletter, you will read in Luke Drurys’ membership article the importance of member support in this area. Please pay attention to these communications. Member Culture and Communication with Staff You also play an important role in the Club culture ROCC conveys not only among members, but with our staff. The environment we create when we interact with the Management team and staff is critical and it must be professional, productive and constructive. We must be mindful to ensure we are displaying behavior that is consistent with our Club values. I would like for you to think of the staff and management team as your partners in moving the Club forward. I have worked closely with every department head and I will be the first to confirm, they want to make everything as great as you dream it to be and they want to fulfill your expectations. We have a strong team of leaders and they are working diligently on operational programming, increasing member value and planning creative and relevant events. Throughout the last few months, we have had some employee turnover, specifically in the Food and Beverage area. Many members have expressed concern about this matter.

This can be very disruptive and creates tension in the employee ranks. Let me assure you, there are always two sides to every story and our management team is working through the issues to rebalance our team. The process of re-staffing some of our key roles takes time. Maria McGinity has carefully recruited some new experienced professionals to manage The Bistro, Banquet and the Wine and Beverage operation. I expect you will see a positive impact in these areas as we move forward. Please allow our new team some time to establish some continuity in their respective areas. I assure you, they are all working very hard to satisfy your expectations. Some of you may notice we have some new looks around the Bistro and dining areas. The decorating committee has been spending countless hours on searching for cost effective solutions to freshen up our facility. New chairs for the Bistro, the Bistro Lounge and the Ladies Locker Room are all being purchased, and we are looking forward to the fresh look when they arrive in the early part of 2018. New carpet has been installed in both the Men’s and Ladies Locker Rooms in the Sports Club. Carpet installation in other areas of the Clubhouse are scheduled for the month of November and will be completed throughout the year as the Club works around times that will not be too disruptive. There will be some interference with the common areas that need to be addressed and we ask for your understanding on those days. I would like to personally thank Julie Goudie, Sandra Smith and Karen Fortier, who serve on the decorating subcommittee. These ladies have volunteered their personal time and their expert skill towards this effort. Please thank them for their time and work in this area. All Committee members serve as a volunteer, on behalf of the Board; I thank all our committee members for the time you have committed to serving to make ROCC the best it can be. I encourage you to serve on a Committee and contribute to building a stronger Club, we need members who are interested in the Club’s future and want to be a part of its progress. I look forward to celebrating with you at the Club’s member holiday party on Tuesday, December 5th. See you at the Club,

Wayne Prejean , Club President

Dear Golfers, As we begin to wind down 2017 we want to thank all of you who have participated in the golf operation. From daily play and events to lesson programs we have seen growth in all areas. We work hard every year to promote the game through fair and friendly competition as well as successful lesson programs, but we also want to continue to improve our service throughout the department. As we continue to train our staff to assist you we ask you please note the following items that will help us to be better at your overall experience: Reminders • Arrive to your tee time at least 15 minutes before. • Please refrain from changing shoes in the parking lot and utilize the locker rooms. • Make sure you and your guests are conforming to all dress code rules. • If you have a private cart please pull to cart staging area at least 10 minutes prior to tee off. • Make sure your group is keeping up with pace of play. Your group is not the only one playing and it is the players responsibility to make sure they keep up.

In the past couple of months, you may have noticed more juniors and ladies practicing and playing golf. These players are working on their game as part of a new golf coaching initiative at Royal Oaks CC. In September ROCC launched an exciting new program based around helping players to shoot 36 or less for 9 holes. Operation 36 is offered through facilities all around the world but Royal Oaks CC is the only facility delivering the program in Houston. The response to the Program has been amazing. We have over 90 juniors, men and women enrolled in the program with these players already reducing their scores by a combined 269 strokes! OP36 is built around weekly group classes and regular on course Matches, where students work through 6 levels with 12 subjects at each level. Juniors receive stickers on a metal bag tag for passed subjects as well

as badges within the OP36 App. Adults work though the same subjects and record their progress in the Op36 App. The feedback from the players involved and parents has been extremely positive. The Coaches are also enjoying working with the players who are focused on improving and working through the levels. It is such a positive environment for everyone. Enroll Today! The current Semester concludes in early December but the Winter Semester will start in mid-January with information available and registration open in midNovember. Based on the feedback we are getting classes are certain to fill quickly so if you or your children are interested in join the OP36 movement reach out to Director of Instruction, Derek Hooper at dhooper@ royaloakscc.com.

Greens Update with George & Trigger Golf Course Superintendent | gmanuel@royaloakscc.com

Good Day Royal Oakians! My faithful and loyal companion (as well as my administrative assistant) welcomes you to our inaugural edition of What’s Happening on the Golf Course and Why are they doing that? We’re glad to be here to help inform you on what’s going on and the reasons why we do so many things to the golf course “just when it gets good.” Topics for these discussion/conversation meanderings may include (but not be limited to) aerification, employees, bunkers, ultradwarfs, fertilization, trees, cart paths, ball marks, traffic, environment, etc. As Trigger and I have talked, we’ll try to make it an enjoyable read, keep things on the light side and just have some fun. Trigger just pulled this month’s topic out of the hat and I see it begins with the Letter “A”. “A” is for Aerification

and we just finished our last one in October on the greens, but we also tried out another tool on the small putting green 10 days ago that I think we will add to the ROCC Golf Course Tool Box in 2018. It’s called DryJect, and while it’s been around for many years, recently improvements have been made to the base unit to make it more efficient and beneficial. More on that later. Why Do We Aerify? A question commonly asked by Royal Oakians is “Why do we aerify so often? The greens were perfect! As I shake the cobwebs clear in my brain, I remember back in my college days at TAMU, Dr. James Beard told us “Cultivation of compacted soils results in improved soil aeration and internal soil water movement. As a result, turfgrass health and vigor is enhanced which in turn reduces proneness to weed invasion, particularly knotweed, as well as being less susceptible to disease, nematode, and insect injury. A

second associated positive effect involves the improved infiltration of water into the soil. This in turn reduces the occurrence of excessively wet soil surface conditions that are particularly favorable for disease development, especially Pythium blight and brown patch.” Thanks Dr. Beard for being our guest and your contribution to this article. To be clear, he never said “Do it just when the greens are at their best, or just to make golfers mad.” We can blame Mother Nature for that. The prevailing thought at the time was do it in the spring and fall on new greens and more frequently as greens age to relieve compaction and improve air exchange to the roots. Healthy plants, happy golfer chants. Dr. Beard never said that, Trigger made it up. Not his best work in my opinion. Coring, Solid, Deep or Drill? There are several different types of aerification. Coring or solid tine? Deep tine or Drill? Injection or star drill bits? These are just a few cultivation practices available to us today and Royal Oaks has literally used them all. Currently we use a combination of deep tine and conventional aerification with solid and/or coring tines

ranging from 3” to 9” in depth. The tines themselves are ¼” to 1 ¼” in diameter. Next year we are going to add DryJect to our arsenal and the difference with this equipment is that it can inject sand, calcined clay or porous ceramics into the soil profile faster and more economically than traditional coring and topdressing with minimal disruption. Please note that I didn’t say any disruption. If you want to get an idea of the process I have included a video for your late night perusing. Okay kids, that’s the letter “A”. Take that home and share it with anyone who might be interested. In 2018 we’ll be sharing the letter “B” for all you strict Alphabeticians! From all of us at ROCC Agronomy Central, have a great holiday season and we’ll see you soon.

See you on the Golf Course, George Manuel Golf Course Superintendent

To Brine or Not to Brine…That is the Question?!

Recently I have been asked by several of our members why our Turkeys for Thanksgiving and Christmas are so moist and delicious. The secret is Brining! Brining is a liquid mixture consisting of water, salt, sugar and spices. It’s a process similar to marinating. It was a great way for early settlers to pickle and preserve their food so it wouldn’t spoil as quickly. By brining your meats it keeps it from drying out and keeping it moist and delicious throughout the cooking process. Although it adds more time in preparation, you will see that it’s totally worth it. I hope you enjoy this recipe and the process as much as I do. Brine for Turkey

1 gallon – warm water ¼ cup – honey 2 tsp. – onion powder

½ cup – kosher salt ¼ cup – light brown sugar 1 tsp. – garlic powder

Place all ingredients into a container and whisk until dissolved. Pour over turkey and brine for at least two – three days.

Craving Prime Rib?

Bring your friends and family to The Bistro, Friday night and savor the all-you-can-eat plated prime rib, one of the best cuts of meat, the perfect combination of flavor, juiciness and tenderness. Served with one of our house-made soups or bistro salad. Make Friday night your new family night and let us do all the work. While you are here, try a glass of one of our Merlots. With medium tannins and earthy flavors, it pairs great with our slow roasted prime rib, seasoned with Chef Jae’s secret peppery-herb blend and seared just right. $24.00 per person

Pickleball... Relish the Game!

Tennis Director, Craig Pendrys | cpendrys@royaloakscc.com Over the last few years, pickleball has been rising in popularity. In fact, pickleball is considered one of the fastest-growing sports in the United States. But what is pickleball exactly, and why is it becoming so popular? What is Pickleball… Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong using a paddle and plastic ball with holes. It is a game that is appropriate for players of all ages and skill levels. Rules for pickleball are simple, making it a great introductory sport. It can also be quite the challenging, fast-paced, and competitive game when people become more experienced at playing. Pickleball is Ideal for All Skill Levels… Because pickleball rules are so similar to ping-pong, it can be easy for practically anyone to learn how to play the game. Whether you’re a beginner who just wants to learn a new sport for fun, or you’re a seasoned player who craves the thrill of more competitive play, pickleball offers something for everyone. Pickleball is a Social Activity… Because a pickleball court is smaller than a tennis court, gameplay allows players to be close enough to one another that they can hold conversations. So, if you’re looking to bond with your

family or have an outing with friends, new or old, pickleball makes it easy to do just that while also giving you the ability to fit in a fun workout. Playing Pickleball is Healthy… If you are looking for some great exercise for your mind and body, pickleball can’t be beat. Playing pickleball allows you to work on your balance, agility, reflexes, and handeye coordination without putting excessive strains on your body. Pickleball is a wonderful alternative for older players who used to play tennis, but have physical limitations such as hip, shoulder, knee, or other joint problems.

Dear Members, It was an absolute pleasure joining the Royal Oaks Country Club team and beginning to get to know all of you. Since my arrival over the summer, I have grown to see what a truly special place ROCC is. From the picturesque views from the Clubhouse overlooking the Golf Course to all of the beautifully manicured landscaping, I have begun to visualize the future potential of the Club. With the vision and goals of the Long Range Planning Committee and Master Plan development, I have entered an extremely exciting time assisting the Club with moving into the future and I am ready for the challenge. For those of you who do not know, I have spending the last few months working on developing a new responsive website with a fresh new look for the Club. The goal is to launch this live by the beginning of December. Your username and password will remain the same but the website will have an entirely new look focusing on simplicity and being user friendly. I ask for everyone’s patience as you grow accustomed to maneuvering the

new website and it becomes the primary resource for all Members to get the information they need when they want it. As mentioned earlier, this website will be responsive; meaning that regardless of which device you’re using to access the website, it will scale to best fit your desktop, tablet or mobile device. Information will now be uniform and accurate across all platforms… I know you all will be just as thrilled as me. Below are dates that I will be hosting a tutorial on how to use the new website, make online reservations and it would be a great time to get any immediate help with any login/password issues.
