September & October 2018

Dear Fellow Members, Summer is winding down and everyone is getting into the fall mode. The summer aerification project has been completed and I can see the continuous improvements in the conditions. We did experience browning in some areas but that is temporary and once the reprogramming of the irrigation systems is complete, we expect to see the turf return to the usual lush green condition sometime around early to midSeptember. We held our Town Hall Meeting on Tuesday, June 19th to introduce our Master Plan. We held another follow-up meeting on July 11th. These meetings were very productive and I thank all of you who came out to listen and contribute. We completed the straw poll and the results are in. As of this writing, we are drafting a memo to the membership describing the results. As expected, the straw poll produced the information needed to determine what amenities are important to the members and what they will support. Those results and a proposal for a project will be forthcoming. We are confident the majority of the membership will be pleased with the plan offered. As part of our long term plan, we realize we need a positive membership trajectory to launch a capital

project. This builds enthusiasm for the club and encourages support for improving our amenities. We have engaged the services of a specialty consulting firm, Creative Golf Marketing (CGM), and we will be launching proven strategies that have a strong track record for producing results. On August 15th, we introduced an exciting new membership initiative to the membership. With help from CGM and our members, I am very confident our efforts will produce more Members and increase our member-count to the expected levels required for our ongoing needs. Please read your emails and the communications regarding the membership program and forthcoming proposal for improvements. We need your support to secure the future prosperity of our special place we call Royal Oaks. Thanks, and see you around the Club,

Wayne Prejean, Club President

Key points regarding our membership initiative: • Your friends and colleagues can preview the Club for 12 consecutive months with no up-front initiation fee (applicable dues, fees and charges will apply). They will go through the standard approval process in order to start the preview. Membership Director Meghan Smith msmith@royaloakscc.com Dear Member, Thank you to all who attended the membership initiative kick-off party August 15th. With 230+ Members, we were absolutely thrilled with the positive tone that was set throughout the evening. Our goal is to give you the message and the tools necessary to assist you in your efforts of introducing the Club to your friends! For those of you who could not attend, your invitation packet has been mailed to your permanent address on file. I have the link to our electronic version of the invitation brochure which not only features our beautiful Club, but also contains the key elements of this membership initiative. You can find the electronic version on your Member Central page on our website. We encourage you to share your packet and this link with friends and family throughout this marketing initiative. You should be receiving our “Forward to a Friend” email within the next week, giving you yet another opportunity to share this information electronically with just one click.

• If they decide to secure their membership within their first 60 days of membership (upon submitting their applicable initiation fee in full or by making the first installment), they will enjoy a preferred initiation fee. • By securing their membership within their first 60 days, both sponsors and new members will enjoy up to 24 monthly Club credits totaling as much as $3,600, depending on the category of membership in which the new member is approved. We hope you will make an effort to hand out your invitation packet or share the electronic invitation with those who you feel will embrace the privilege and responsibility of becoming a member of Royal Oaks Country Club! Creative Golf Marketing has tailored this program for us with the goal to secure memberships within the first 60 days of debut. That is how confident they are with this program’s proven track record. We’ve got nothing to lose, only great members to gain! Have more questions? Please don’t hesitate to reach out. The Club will continue to put on great events that are the best opportunities to showcase the club to your prospects. I look forward to meeting your friends, family and colleagues! Meghan Smith, Membership Director

Do you remember when you were a kid? No matter what the time of year, you were always ready to play and have fun. Somewhere between childhood and adulthood we’ve stopped playing, why is that? In the words of George Bernard Shaw, “We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.” Fortunately, the ladies in our Ladies Association are young at heart and no strangers to having fun. Regardless of the hectic, modern day lives we lead; instead of focusing too heavily on work, family or community commitments, we focus on having some good old fashion fun.

If you haven’t seen a “Save the Date” flyer hanging around the Club, mark your calendars. You don’t want to miss our “Shopping Bonanza” scheduled for October 4th and the “Annual Members Luncheon” scheduled for November 8th. Watch for details to follow.

Your ROCC Ladies Association has established regular play times to help develop your playful side. Like our monthly networking happy hour where you can unwind, de-stress and enjoy the company of your fellow sister members. You get the “skinny” on all the upcoming events and activities; you get to toast and celebrate the monthly birthday babies and most of all, you get to enjoy a good time. After all, you know what they say: laughter is the best medicine!

The ladies of the Royal Oaks Country Club Ladies Association invite you to “come play with us”!

At one of our most recent networking happy hours we put a new spin on an old movie classic, “Pillow Talk”. To promote the upcoming “Ladies Movie Night” at the Club scheduled for September 19th, our members got a little show with their beverage. A playful way to break the ice for any new members and loosen up any held over stress from a hectic day.

Last issue I took a gamble, rolled the dice and asked if there was any interest in starting a monthly Bunko Night. You’ll be happy to know that we are close to working out the details and possibly by the time you read this we’ll have a date and time for the inaugural Ladies Bunko night.

Not a member of the Royal Oaks Country Club Ladies Association? Your membership in the Club qualifies you for membership in the ROCC Ladies Association. Call the Club Concierge (281-899-3200) and request to join; annual fee is $50. Don’t miss out on the fun and friendships; it is a great way to meet people. Mary Alice Lester, ROCCLA President

Thanks for a great summer at the pool! I hope our staff was able to meet your expectations and needs this summer. Please let us know how we did and how we can improve for next year. We're already looking forward to it!

Executive Chef, Jae Mackenzie jmackenzie@royaloakscc.com

Just reminder that the pool and snack bar are only open on the weekends (Saturday and Sunday) for the remainder of September. The last official day will be Sunday, September 30th. As holiday season approaches the Palm Grille will be gearing up to host private events and Club activities.

Attention Houston! Chophouse Night

is around the corner, Friday, October 12th from 5:00 – 9:00 p.m. in The Bistro. It’s never too early to make your reservation. You can reach The Bistro at 281-899-3230 or visit the Club’s app to reserve your seat today. Eric and I have created a fabulous three-course tasting menu (for just $52+ per person) featuring premium cuts of beef and specialty wines and cocktails. Thank you again for those who came out and supported our biannual Lobster Weekend. We had another sold-out weekend in The Bistro, preparing and serving over 70 live Maine lobsters flown in directly from Maine. It’s great to see The Bistro packed with families and friends enjoying one another’s company while delighting in great food and wine. I don’t know about you but this Yankee is hoping for some cooler weather to come our way! I'm also ready to enjoy some great professional and college football - am I allowed to say Roll Tide? Hope to see y'all around the Club soon! Chef Jae Mackenzie, Executive Chef

What a warm reception I’ve received since my start at Royal Oaks. I’ve had the opportunity to meet many of you and have received great feedback on the adjustments being made around the course. The course is in outstanding shape and the maintenance staff has been great during the transition. The last couple of months have been filled with time spent on the course learning the layout and preparing a list of both short and long-term items to be addressed. Kelly has been great in helping to scratch these items off as the weeks pass. For the coming months we will continue to work on this list as well as build on it. The great thing about golf course maintenance (GCM) is there is never an end to the work to be done. We had a great August aerification and by the time you read this we should be near full recovery. Outside of the traditional aerification methods used on fairways and

tees this year we used the DryJect system on the greens. This is a great tool in the GCM toolbox and I look forward to its continued use in the future. Not to bore you with the details but it essentially uses high pressure water to blast a hole in the greens surface allowing sand to follow the water into the hole. This is a highly efficient means of adjusting the soil profile and improving the water infiltration rate with the system reaching depths of approximately 5”. This August we injected nearly 35 tons of sand into the greens profile. I am looking forward to the cooler months ahead and the excellent fall golf calendar that accompanies them. This is always my favorite time of year to showcase the course to all of the Members and their guests and Royal Oaks should certainly be thought of as a “Place to Showcase.” Cody Alexander, Golf Course Superintendent

I’d like to start by saying, "Thank You!" All the Members and Staff have been so welcoming to me and my family. Since starting mid-August, the first few weeks have been very busy with events, Members returning from a summer away, meeting Members and Guests and so much more around the Club. The staff has been great and very patient as I work into and adjust to the operation, and I am looking forward to getting the operation fully staffed and prepared for a busy and wonderful Fall here at the Club. I know summer has come to a quick end and the juniors are back in school, and as they begin this school year of learning, I hope that they continue to make time for their golf games as well. Our Fall Operation 36 has over 100 participants… wow! There are only a few age classes still available, so please, check with the Golf Shop Staff for availability. The instructional staff is looking forward to cooler temps and helping everyone improve your golf games, so don’t wait, start finding those fairways, hitting those greens and making those putts…book your lesson today. The start of a new season is a great time to go through those golf bags and see if there are any areas that need updating. New equipment introductions are coming out soon, so be on the lookout for upcoming demo days and book your club fittings soon, so you can get your new equipment before the tournament season is in full swing. Please remember to visit the website for the upcoming events around the Club and upcoming MGA and WGA tournaments. The Club will be open for Columbus Day, Monday, October 8th and closed Tuesday the 9th. Fairways and Greens, James D. Brown, PGA, Head Golf Professional

I love seeing so many of the membership using our practice facilities to work on their game. Despite the time of year, regardless of how hot or cold it is, dedicated players are on the range working hard so they can play a little better on the golf course. When I talk to players we regularly have conversations about the direction in which the ball is traveling, but I never hear players talk about how far the ball finished from target due to it being long, or more regularly short. I see similar issues when I go on the course with players. We will discuss targets and where the trouble is that needs to be avoided on a particular shot, but rarely will the player offer thoughts on avoiding trouble long or short. When we analyze shot dispersions for any player the general pattern is an oval around the designated target. The oval may favor the right side if the player fades the ball for example, but the shape is still an oval, with shots missing the target left and right, but just as importantly long and more often short. When I ask players how far they hit a particular club they usually quote me the farthest distance that they have ever hit that club. They rarely consider that it is extremely rare for them to strike the ball absolutely

perfectly and that in fact their average distance with that club is yards shorter. The ability to know how far you average with each club and its dispersion is critical to making good decisions on the golf course. This would allow you to stay out of trouble and thus avoid big numbers, but also hit more shots on the green and close to the hole. It is also the easiest way to shoot lower scores as it doesn’t require a swing change or any additional practice time. So how can you determine how far you hit each club? We are very fortunate to have Trackman technology at the Club. This little orange box that you may have seen the Instruction Team using, measures a variety of data, one of which is how far you carry the ball. It is very easy to set up a time with one of the instruction team and in about an hour you can leave with a report that clearly shows your average carry with each club in your bag. Armed with this information you can make smarter course management decisions by choosing more appropriate targets, resulting in less penalties, more hit greens and lower scores. Doesn’t that sound like fun. Derek Hooper, Australian PGA, Director of Instruction

Facility Update Court 5 has been resurfaced. Some damage had appeared at the back of the court outside the playing area but within the normal moving space behind the baseline. It was deemed fitting to go ahead and resurface as this court was scheduled to be done next year. With the completion of the Stadium Court and Court 5, if you have not been out to play lately come by and pay us a visit. The ice machine on the Stadium Court has been a little temperature-mental of late and we are in the process of procuring a new one. We are also in discussion as to how to format our hydration stations to better serve all of our Members. Junior Program I have initiated our private group program this fall to accommodate all our Members who are currently involved and any who would like to start. These are group lessons that the players have been evaluated to be in to enhance their development and make the instruction relevant to all who participate. If you still wish to join please email or stop by so I can evaluate your player and we get them into the correct group. ROCC App All court reservations are being made through the app or on line so please make yourself familiar with the system or stop by for help. Please remember that sometimes the court you reserve may have to be moved

to accommodate all who wish to play. We guarantee if you book a hard court you will have one, however, it may not always be the court you book. Please understand with league, lessons and pickle some juggling will be required. Check-In You have two methods of check-in: 1. Come by the Sports Desk and check-in as usual 2. Text your check in. 832-997-7360 has been set up for you to text your check in for tennis and lap pool usage. The 1st time, please send your Member name and number, so we can set your phone number up in our contacts. Every time after that just send us the “I’m here” and the staff will process your check in. This is important as we must more accurately account for our usage so we can plan accordingly. Pickleball Every Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. we have open pickle play which all Members are welcome to show up to and participate in. If you need a pickle bat/paddle, we have some demos at the Sports Club front desk. If you need more info please feel free to email me. Thursday night is a little bit more competitive so please come out to Wednesday and touch base with Hal Martin.

Should you take supplements? While it is completely possible to get everything you need from food it is not likely you do. Since no one eats perfectly all the time it may be necessary to supplement your nutrition to avoid common deficiencies. While it is better to eat whole foods and improve your dietary intake, almost all my athletes and clients find the need to supplement. Needs arise when you know you have a deficit not likely to be met with food, when you travel or are in restricted food or calorie circumstances. These five recommendations are my top considerations because they are safe and most likely needed. So consider these five supplements for starters. Brands are too numerous to list and to review, therefore I am not listing them.

Member Workout Spotlight Jane Wallace Meet Jane! She is a regular at the Sports Club, working out two times per week with Shayne. "My doctor advised me to begin a vigorous exercise program that included cardio, weights, stretching and balance. Shayne has been a great trainer for two years and I am now much stronger and more limber than before." Her favorite cardio exercise is the recumbent bike. Jane is also a Member of the ROCCLA and loves to play Mexican Train.

1. Multivitamin – Take a multivitamin to reduce

the risk of nutrient deficiency and provide “insurance” for days when we do not get enough of a complete or varied diet. Optimum amounts of vitamins and minerals are usually higher than the minimum daily allowance. Find a great quality brand and use it daily or at least on days when foods are limited.

2. Fish Oil – The minimum recommended EPA

and DHA intake is 900 mg per day. The average American gets only 300 mg per day. Fish oil helps with so many other aspects of health like dry eye, skin issues, joint health, inflammation reduction, heart health, weight loss and healthy cell membranes maintenance. Oftentimes, 2 – 3 grams (2000 -3000 mg) a day, taken at various times throughout the day, may be recommended for optimal health and is way more than the minimum intake of .9 grams.

3. Probiotics – Probiotics are friendly bacteria living

in our digestive tract and unique to each individual. These bacteria help digest and absorb nutrients plus influence our overall health and immunity, metabolism and body composition too. Aim for consuming probiotic-rich foods like yogurt, kimchi, tempeh, miso, some cheeses, kefir, and sauerkraut. It is also a great idea to supplement with a probiotic that contains 8 – 10 probiotic strains daily to feed healthy gut bacteria and keep everything balanced.

4. Greens Powder – Do you consume at least 5

fruits/vegetables a day? *Less than 4 percent of 18 – 24 year olds, less than 9% of 25 – 34 year olds, less than 16% of 35 – 49 year olds and less than 24% of 50 – 64 year olds consume 5 or more veggies and fruits a day. Greens supplements are vegetables, fruits, algae and grasses compacted into powdered form and can help with the daily allotment of fruits and vegetables. Traveling with a greens powder is especially effective when you are faced with limited food options. We know that fruits and veggies are good for us and appear to reduce cardiovascular disease, cancers, high blood cholesterol, high blood

pressure, diabetes, stroke, eye disease, asthma, COPD, and osteoporosis. Try adding your greens powder to your protein shake or stews or casseroles to boost nutrition.

5.Protein Powders – Most of your

protein should come from actual food sources, but it is also acceptable to get 1 – 2 servings from supplemental powders. One serving size of protein for women is 20 – 30 grams and men is 40 – 60 grams. Exercising or active individuals are advised to consume 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight. The most common protein powders are from whey, egg or vegetarian blends. You can even find protein powders made from hemp or crickets! Pick a high quality brand without a lot of extra ingredients. A super shake is blended food with protein powder and is a great way to get additional protein.

We absorb nutrients from foods better than in supplemental form but when necessary these supplements can help you reach the optimum requirements for health, energy and good body composition. Not all supplements are appropriate for everyone so please contact me for more information or consult your medical professional or a registered dietitian. Pam Owens, Fitness Director

THE SUPER SHAKE GUIDE: TURN YOUR BORING PROTEIN SMOOTHIE INTO A SUPER SHAKE These unique, nutrient-packed shakes can serve as excellent meal replacements when you’re short on time.

JUICE-BAR SHAKES VS. SUPER SHAKES Juice-Bar Shakes Contain high levels of sugar Include low-quality protein sources Rely heavily on processed ingredients Use too many artificial components

SUPER SHAKES Contain minimal sugar and artificial ingredients Use high-quality protein sources Include whole fruits and vegetables Provide fiber and healthy fats

START WITH A GOOD BLENDER Since your Super Shakes will use whole foods and some frozen ingredients, you’ll need a powerful machine. Here are two good options.
