Dear Fellow Members, I hope everyone has had a safe and enjoyable summer with friends and family. The Club continues to evolve and provide a great environment for members and guests, which is reflected in some of the highest usage in the Club’s history. Some of the highlights of the last couple of months were fabulous drive-through dining, after work golf scrambles for new members, movie nights, teenage cooking classes, Ladies Association virtual cooking class with Chef Eva (rave reviews), Virtual Fitness Classes offered by our Fitness Team, MGA drop-out scramble, WGA golf social, 4th of July parade and fireworks (one of the few clubs in town) and so many other great events to keep us active, connected and mentally healthy. The collaborative and creative focus of the Royal Oaks staff is a big part of this success and as members during these times we truly appreciate their efforts. To continue building on this success, the Club will be rolling out a member engagement platform soon that utilizes two-way texting between the Members and the Club. The platform has benefited many in the service industry including hotels, service businesses, legal firms, and has been an incredibly successful and efficient communication tool for resorts and country clubs. The Board is committed to presenting a capital project to the membership, and strongly believes we must advance a plan. We appreciate that there is some impatience growing among the membership and a desire for enhanced amenities and continued investment in the Club. However, it is important to remember we restructured the Charter obligations in 2019 and a pandemic halted our strategy to present a Long-Range Plan to the membership in late Spring 2020. We feel that in person meetings are beneficial to the membership. We will continue to monitor COVID-19 in the Houston area, which seems to be headed in the right direction to allow us to communicate with you in a safe and productive manner. We hope to be hosting multiple town hall style meetings, in person or virtually if needed, at the earliest opportunity. Your input will be critical in the final decision of a plan moving forward. Membership at the Club continues to be strong in numbers and community from the early months of the pandemic, and I believe our members are truly seeing the value of being part of Royal Oaks. Please continue to introduce your friends and family to Royal Oaks Country Club and visit with Meghan Smith, our Director of Membership. Meghan is a great Ambassador for our Club and is committed to ensuring that all new members maximize their experiences at the Club. Last quick thoughts of appreciation: • Thanks to our Golf Course Maintenance Team for working through massive rainfalls and heat during our July golf course closure so successfully. • Thanks to the generosity of a group of members for rewarding them with gift cards. • Thanks to our team for continuing to be innovative by looking to find new ways to enhance our experience at the Club. • Thanks to our members for making reservations so that we can improve our service to you. • Thanks to the many members who take the time to email the staff when they do something right. • Thanks to the members who provide us directly with constructive feedback so that we can improve. • Thanks to all the members who volunteer their time because they truly want to make this Club better. Plan on hearing from me soon regarding the State of the Club and future Capital Projects that should invigorate and energize our Club and its Members. Sincerely, Luke Drury, Club President Royal Oaks Country Club

Message From Membership Dear Royal Oaks Members, What a great time to be a Member! Not only has the weather been HOT but so has our current preview program. We have just 2 months left of our current program as it stands. Now is the time to tell your close friends to join before this program ends! I can tell you that there will be a reduction in those statement credits, so if you have anyone in mind, it is time to get them started. Since September 2019, we have brought in 86 new members!
Membership Director Meghan Smith msmith@royaloakscc.com
I am so proud with the efforts made by our team during this pandemic! I continue to hear from all of you about what a great job Chef Eva is doing with our culinary team and how the golf and golf course maintenance continue to provide a great product for the membership. Our virtual classes have never been so well attended and the Tennis/Pickleball complex continues to see an increase in usage. Though our reservation systems took some time to get used to for our long-time members, it has been very well received so we are able to do all we can to keep you safe and returning to the club. We have been thrilled with the outpouring of wonderful compliments from members and I have witnessed our community become even closer. When things got crazy, our team got to work without hesitation, and it means so much when we hear from the members how much they have appreciated the efforts. As the weather begins to cool and the kids return to school, we will continue to adapt to your needs. We want you to feel confident in spending time at your club! Most of the new members that have joined us over these last 6 months have told me they realized that being a part of a private club is more valuable now than it has ever been. Golf has seen such a resurgence with young people, and we are thrilled to see these families choosing Royal Oaks Country Club to be the place they can spend time together and make memories. This is the message to share with your friends, family, and co-workers. This is your club, you are the owner, and we are your support team to keep it safe, healthy, and fun. Think about who within your networks you would want to share that time with and encourage them to be a part of our great community. They have until the end of November to take advantage of the current program!! As always, I am here to support you and am never too busy for your referrals. All the best, Meghan Smith Membership Director

Clubhouse News In a world filled with uncertainty, the Food & Beverage team here at Royal Oaks has been proud to offer our Members some sense of normalcy this summer. By putting sanitation and safety as a top priority, we’ve been able to safely serve our members in the Bistro, at the Pool and Palm Grille, and at the Turn throughout the spring and summer. The feedback we’ve heard during this time has been resoundingly grateful and appreciative. Clubhouse Manager Bill Ceriello bceriello@royaloakscc.com
We continue to hear how having the club available to dine, play golf, or swim at the pool makes the members and their families feel normal in an otherwise uncertain world. This sentiment has meant so much to the entire Food & Beverage team, and we truly appreciate being able to serve you and help provide this sense of normalcy. Believe me when I say that it has helped all of us to feel the same way!
Reflecting on this very unique (and hot!) summer, it has been great for our Food & Beverage team to find creative ways to serve our members. The idea of setting up a “Drive-Thru” station at valet would have seemed crazy just a few months ago, but these great “Drive-Thru” nights have turned into fun ways to encourage members to pick up their family dinner from the club and have become some of our most successfully programmed events this summer. The Taco Tuesday nights were the busiest takeout nights all summer and the feedback coming in was very positive as these Drive-Thru nights have been serving over 200 orders on average! Chef Eva and her culinary team have done a fantastic job with the Weekend Specials for Two, which have been a hit both in the dining room and for takeout. The Pool continues to provide a much-needed oasis for our members of all ages, with great specials from the Palm Grille each week! As the fall approaches, keep an eye out for more of the creative and fun ways we hope to serve you. Thanks again for all the support throughout the summer! Bill Ceriello Clubhouse Manager

In the Kitchen Dear Members, First of all, I would like to thank you for being so supportive and for choosing the Club as your preferred dining venue. We love what we do and our goal every day is to be better than the day before. I am very happy to see you and your loved ones visiting with us. We are always striving to keep each other safe and healthy to be able to give you a sense of tranquility while you spend time at the club - whether it is dining in or enjoying any of the amenities and services.
Executive Chef Eva Barrios, CEC ebarrios@royaloakscc.com
The food and beverage team has been busy providing to-go and delivery services, and we are continuing to make changes on the Bistro menu to keep it fresh and interesting. Our weekly and weekend specials have been very well received. The Taco Tuesdays and Chicken Sandwich drive thru were a great success. I hope you love it as much as we do! It has been fun to see everyone stop in to pick up dinner and visit with us even for a few short minutes. I love everything we have on the menu, but I have personal favorite for this warm weather! I am sharing the below recipe with you and I hope you give it a try. It is so easy to make and it is delicious and refreshing! Eva Barrios, CEC Executive Chef
We can't get enough of Chef Eva's beautiful & delicious culinary creations!
Social Life Dear Members, Thank you to those of you with young kids and teenagers that completed our youth program survey. We had about 50 responses to the survey, which provided some great information to help us determine the best opportunities to provide activities and events for your young ones!
Catering and Events Director Allyson Brown abrown@royaloakscc.com
Be on the lookout in the coming months for these programs and activities as we navigate our “new normal. If you ever have any ideas or suggestions for youth offerings please let us know. As always, thank you for your continued support of the Club, and in helping build our wonderful member community! Allyson Brown Catering & Events Director

All or Nothing Doesn't Work Fitness Director, Pam Owens | powens@royaloakscc.com
There's one mental approach that needs to go away. And I am guilty of it too! That's the all or nothing thinking that plagues us when we try to make a change.
When we approach workout endeavors, nutrition changes, meals and golf improvement with this same 'all or nothing' thinking, we cycle off and on and oftentimes end up further away from our goals than when we started. That's why you need to consider a personalized nutrition guide for improving your meals to help you reach your EPIC goals. Why? Because the Personalized Nutrition Guide is not TOO RIGID, not TOO SOFT, but it's JUST RIGHT! Meal plans don't work for long. You just can't eat "ounces" and someone else's diet for very long. Random eating is not getting you any closer to your goals. Fast forward a few years and imagine where you might be if you continue. You want a personalized nutrition guide that includes macros, portions and that considers your lifestyle, your eating preferences, is easy to use yet incorporates ONLY the information you need. Many thousands have used this guide with a high success rate for getting and staying on track. I am proud and excited to bring this offer to you. Just imagine what becomes available when you move forward with your best nutrition? Pam Owens Fitness Director

Transfer Your Range Game to the Course Director of Instruction, Derek Hooper | dhooper@royaloakscc.com
2020 Winter Operation 36 Program Each week I have playersOpens tell me they don’t understand 1, why2019. they hit the ball so well on the range, yet play so Registration December
poorly on the course. They just can’t understand why their range game does not travel with them to the first tee. In any other sport, you practice on the field or court on which you will play. But in golf, the driving range looks nothing like the field of play. The golf driving range was originally designed to accomplish two things – it was a place to warm up prior to your round and a way for facilities to make additional revenue through payment for rage balls. It was never designed to be a place where golfers work to improve their golf skills. As a result of the range set up, all too often we fall into the following traps: 1. Practice swing mechanics only – Golfers invest the majority of their practice time on the range working to make changes to their swing mechanics. They believe that if they can reproduce the same ball flight over and over again, or have consistency, that they will play better on the golf course. But when was the last time you had to hit the same club multiple times in a row on the course? 2. Shot preparation – On the range, shot preparation typically consists of rolling a ball off the pyramid and up onto a nice lie. Maybe you have a practice swing, maybe you don’t. But on the course, there are many decisions that need to be made prior to playing shot. Where is my target? Where is the trouble? What is the wind doing? How far do I have to my target? How far is it to carry the trouble? How will my stance and lie effect my shot? How will I prepare mentally so I can be fully committed to my shot? And many others. How can I expect to be an expert at these things if I never practice them? 3. Practice time is allotted in an unbalanced way - A round of golf is split roughly into 40% full swing shots, 20% short game shots and 40% putting. Yet most players practice allocation does not match these percentages. Most players practice time is heavily weighted to full swing, with very little time on putting and the short game is an afterthought. 4. Range conditions are not representative of course challenges – The golf driving range tee is perfectly flat, we roll each ball up onto a fluffed up lie, play the shot to an undefined target without any consequences for the outcome. This is all the exact opposite of what we are faced with on the course. Falling into the above traps is easily done. The driving range encourages this type of practice. But if you want to play better on the course you need to break out of these patterns and practice in ways that are more representative of the skills you are being asked to perform on the course.
Better Practice Guidelines: 1. Change clubs and targets at least every 3 shots. 2. Be sure that targets are clearly defined with a left and right border. 3. Complete your full pre-shot routine on every shot – check yardage and wind, take your normal number of practice swings, have a clear mental picture of the shot you are wanting to play 4. After the shot evaluate the outcome. 5. Play games where each shot is scored and you work to achieve predetermined target scores. 6. Utilize these guidelines for putting, chipping and pitching as well as long game.
Just recently, Derek Hooper and Robert Scott concluded a pilot program called The Scoring System, that focused on many of the principles in this article and the results in scoring from the guys in the program was remarkable. If you are interested in learning more about how you can transfer your range skills to the course, watch for future updates about the next Scoring System Program. Fairways and Greens,
Derek Hooper PGA, Director of Instruction
Aerification Update
Golf Course Superintendent, Cody Alexander | calexander@royaloakscc.com We have definitely had our hands full in the golf course maintenance department this summer! We were able to complete some much needed aerification practices during two different closures starting in June and another in late July. During the July aerification we received substantial rainfall and wrapped up the month of August with dry, searing heat. Everything that was done during the last few months on the golf course is a necessary step in maintaining the high expectations of your club. The amount of work completed during the July aerification with the intermittent heavy rainfall throughout is a testament to the will and determination of each individual on the golf course maintenance team. The cleanup of the July aerification was severely hampered due to the accompanying rainfall but I couldn’t be happier with the overall outcome. The golf course is nearly fully recovered just a few short weeks after the last hole was punched and we are beginning the process of lowering mowing heights and improving ball speed around the course. The staff has done a fantastic job in keeping the golf course in great shape during the summer months and is currently working toward preparing for the fall golf season. We look forward to seeing you out on the golf course enjoying your next round. Cody Alexander Golf Course Superintendent

"My wife and I have been residents at ROCC for almost 20 years. And lately we have ordered meals for pick up from the Bistro. The reason I am writing is to commend the chef, meal planners and support staff for a job well done. In our opinion it is the best it has been since we moved here. And that is especially appreciated in this covid-19 environment. Keep up the good work. It is really working for us and very much appreciated!" JERRY & DONA HOWARD
