Cars have become not only essential but also objects of veneration. They gleam with chrome, sparkling lacquer, badges, all designed to shout a message of style, function, importance. Yet in the end the processes of decay are stronger. Cars are eaten away by rust and microbes. Nature takes them and is polluted in the process. They give us a fading beauty but at a terrible price.
