Asyouwillsee,2023hasalreadykickedoffwiththetwoMidlandsbasedAV competitions,andmanymorearenowopenforentriesorjustabouttostart acceptingthem.ThenextmajoreventisthePeterColesInternationalAV Competition,whichwillbeheldonlineviaZoomonthe11th&12thMarch.Thistime, thejuryofRobertAlbright,LindaGibbsandEdgarGibbswillbepre-judgingitasif itwerealiveevent–i.e.alltogetherinthesameroomwiththeentriesprojectedon toascreenwithaproperaudiosystem.Soalthoughtheeventwillstillbestreamed overZoom,atleastthejudgingwillhavebeendoneinamoretraditionalmanner.
FollowingthatwehavetheJurassicCoastInternationalAVSalon,theChallenge321 Contest,theAdelaideAudioVisualFestival,theCittadiGardaAVFestival,the TrophéedeParisandtheTaurangaAudioVisualSalon.

ThereallybignewsthoughisthattheRPSInternationalAVFestivalwillberunasa liveeventattheTonyTromanTheatreinRPSHouseinBristol.Thisisanexcellent venue,andtheFestivalwillbeanidealoccasionforthosewhohavenotyetvisited thePaintworkstoseetheRPSinitsnewhome.Moredetailsappearlaterinthis bulletin,andI’mverygratefultobothLindaandEdgarGibbsforalltheworkthey havealreadydoneinplanningtheFestivalandinvestigatingpotentialhotelsinthe Bristolarea.

MyinterestinphotographystartedwhenIwas13yearsoldafter myfatherboughtmeacameraformybirthday.Togetherwe joinedaclubandtheinterestgrew.WhenIwas17mycamera wentwrong,soItookitforrepair,itwasthenthatIappliedfora jobrepairingcameras.Eversincethenthathasbeenmy professionuntilIretiredat65.IjoinedtheRPSandwentonto gainanFRPSinAVin1987.IhavealsoservedonTheRPSInternationalAVFestival committeefor27yearsandIamstillamemberofthatcommittee,plusafive-year stintasChairoftheRPSAVGroup.

AfterjoiningtheRPSin1986Iwasinvitedorratherpersuadedby thelateArthurDownestoattendedtheopeningsessionofthe 7thRPSInternationalAVFestival.ImpressedbywhatIsawand heard,Ivoluntarilyboughtticketsfortherestofthefestivaland joinedtheRPSAV-Groupthefollowingyear.Infectedwiththe AV-virus,IvisitednumerousAVFestivals,bothonthecontinentandinEngland.I'd liketothinkthatmyreportsonsomeofthecontinentalfestivalsinAVNewsand AVWorldcontributedtoanincreasingnumberofBritishAVworkersenteringand attending'continentalfestivals'.

Itookupphotographyin2004,and,whatwasthenamerehobby hasgrowntobecomeapassion.Iamluckyenoughtohave travelledextensivelyand,naturally,IloveTravelPhotography.
Nevertheless,StreetPhotographyremainsmyfirstlove.Lotsof landscapesaresimilarbutevery“street”photoisunique.Itreally isaboutcapturingthemomentandaboutshowingtheidiosyncrasiesoflife.
IstartedmakingA.V.sabout10yearsagoandjoinedtheEastLeinsterA.V.Group. Thegrouphavebeenveryencouragingandhelpfuland,asaresult,myA.V.s seemtobegettingbetterandI’vebeenluckyenoughtowinafewawardsalong theway.
