GROUP MAGAZINE

NO. 82 May 2020 MEMBERS’ EXHIBITION ISSUE

CREATIVE EYE

WELCOME This is the second exhibition issue that I have edited, and again it’s been a privilege to work with such a diverse and imaginative range of imagery from our members. I can’t not mention the strange times that we find ourselves in, but I hope this issue will brighten your day and we have included a lockdown themed ‘Parting Shots’ on the last two pages. Finally, to echo what Moira says on the page opposite, we’re giving you the chance to have one of your images used for the cover of September’s issue. Send your image to me no later than 31st July (at least 2400 px on the long edge) for consideration. Steve Varman, Editor

CREATIVE EYE GROUP MAGAZINE NO. 82 May 2020

FROM THE

CHAIRMAN

T

he first event of the year took place at the beginning of March with the Group’s AGM and Members’ 2020 Exhibition Selection. Our guest selectors, Roger and Judith Parry, did a marvellous job choosing a varied exhibition of high quality and interesting work. You will enjoy seeing the result in this magazine’s special exhibition edition. The Royal Photographic Society relies on the very considerable effort put in by volunteers working for the Society. The Creative Eye Group is run by a passionate and dedicated team of volunteers. The Group’s activities would not happen without their support and hard work. As a token of its appreciation, the Society gives a special thanks to volunteers after each four, eight and twelve years with a Certificate of Recognition. At the end of the AGM I had great pleasure in presenting seven of our Creative Eye Group volunteers with certificates and badges. Melvyn and Pat Frewin and Bill Coles for four years, Matthew Clarke and David Harris for eight years, Barry Collin for twelve years and a very special mention and a certificate to Barry Freeman who is now in his twenty first year of volunteering for the Society. With the news of Coronavirus reaching the UK, we had no option but to cancel or postpone all planned events through to the autumn. We are all affected in so many different ways, trying to manage our lives in this unprecedented time. The directive from the British and many other countries’ Governments that we stay at home provides an opportunity for photography to be enjoyed and to help keep us occupied. Making the photobook you had been thinking of doing for ages, experimenting with macro and creative photography around your home or, perhaps, working towards an RPS Distinction. Dig out those old forgotten photos. Many can be vastly improved by either scanning or photographing them and touching them up with the help of Photoshop or similar software. For your amusement and entertainment, inside this magazine you will find the first half of a photography quiz which has been compiled by Nigel Rea and Stephen Cook. Do have a go. The answers will be in the next edition of the Creative Eye magazine, together with the second half of the quiz. We are still looking for a suitable image for the front cover of September’s edition of the magazine. Originally, we were planning to run a competition to celebrate 2020 and the new decade but, maybe, “celebrate” is not the word that many of us would use to associate with this year so far, although celebration will become the order of the day when the crisis is over. Under the circumstances, the image chosen for the September cover will not be limited to the planned brief but will be open to any subject of your choice. Please send one image, taken this year, to our Editor, Steve Varman by Friday 31 st July. I thank you for your continued support. Please stay safe and well.

CREATIVE EYE GROUP MEMBERS’ PRINT AND PROJECTED IMAGE EXHIBITION 2020

AWARDS Images selected by Roger Parry ARPS MAPGB EFIAP HonPAGB ESFIAP Judith Parry DPAGB AFIAP HonPAGB Roger and Judith have been very deeply involved in club photography for over 50 years, both serving as Presidents of their own club, Smethwick Photographic Society, and also the Midland Counties Photographic Federation. Roger is currently the Vice President of the PAGB and chairs the Judges Committee. He is also a member of the FIAP Sub Committee. Judith is the MCPF representative on the PAGB Executive and is a member of the PAGB Patronage committee. Roger was the Technical and Marketing Manager of Paterson Photographic and still acts as a technical consultant for them. For many years he visited Camera Clubs giving talks and demonstrations on darkroom work and studio lighting techniques. Club lectures are now undertaken as a joint venture, presenting their current work with prints. They are both Permajet lecturers. Both are keen exhibitors. Roger is Chairman of the Smethwick International Exhibition, Judith joining the inaugural committee 41 years ago. Judith is Chairman of both the London Salon of Photography and the Midland Salon. As PAGB Judges, they both regularly judge National and International Exhibitions here in the UK and overseas. Although they were originally darkroom workers, they now only use digital cameras for their photography. Subjects include Portraits, Classical Figure Photography and Still Life although they are willing to have a go at most types of photography.

BEST IMAGE (PRINT)

Left in the Corner by George Heath LRPS Judge’s comment (Judith Parry): This is simple, well thought out and well executed. Each of the objects in the room is carefully placed. That bright curtain takes our eye into the corner and then we see what the title was about.

BEST IMAGE (PROJECTED IMAGE)

Guggenheim Car Park by Tillman Kleinhans ARPS Judge’s comment (Roger Parry): Whilst I have seen many images taken at the Guggenheim, this one is the most unusual that I have seen. It shows a very creative approach to photographing this iconic building. The inclusion of the cars helps to produce a very pleasing design.

Leaving The Sandbank by Martin Heathcote LRPS Judge’s comment (Judith Parry): The sheer simplicity of this picture appealed to me. The author is to be congratulated on the technical ability shown. HIGHLY COMMENDED (PRINT)

HIGHLY COMMENDED (PROJECTED IMAGE)

Acting the Goat by Wendy Irwin ARPS Judge’s comment (Roger Parry): I thought that this image was the best of the creative images in this section. Technically it was put together very well. One slight worry was the lack of any shadow under the feet and chair. However, the image did show a great deal of imagination.

COMMENDED (PROJECTED IMAGE)

Stepping Out by Martin Parrat ARPS Judge’s comment (Roger Parry): I very much liked the effect of movement by the three figures in this image. The separation between the three figures is just right and the colour of the red umbrella echoed in the skirt and shawl of the other two figures all help the composition of the image.

CREATIVE EYE GROUP MAGAZINE NO. 82 May 2020

COMMENDED (PRINT)

Pomegranates by Brian Fleming LRPS Judge’s comment (Judith Parry): To create is to make and this author has made a beautiful picture. Because all the elements have been placed in their position by the photographer it shows not only a keen sense of detail, but also wonderful lighting.

COMMENDED (PRINT)

Dressed for the Part by Joan Jordan ARPS Judge’s comment (Judith Parry): All the colours in this picture harmonize. It is most effective to have the figure walking away from us. Colourful without being gaudy.

A Moment in Time (left) and Fender Telecaster Detail by Nigel Rea ARPS A club challenge for lockdown: Shoot 5 images that are in one room, in the place they are situated and with available daylight.

Still Life by Steve Varman LRPS I’ve been wanting to try light painting for a while and, with the extra time indoors, I’ve finally had a go. You’ll need a dimly lit room (no ambient light, a garage in my case) and a small torch. I modified the torch with some cardboard and tissue paper to make a narrow beam that wasn’t too harsh. Take a seperate (10 to 15 second) exposure for each item, lighting it with your touch. Keep the torch moving to avoid hotspots and burnt highlights. Load the images into your photo editor as layers and set the blending mode to screen.

Water World (above-left) and Rapunzel by Jan Harris ARPS Use your lockdown time to edit and reimagine images from your catalogue. CREATIVE EYE GROUP MAGAZINE NO. 82 May 2020
