MONTHLYONLINECOMPETITION

ThewinnerofourJanuarymonthlyonlinecompetitionwas‘Shadows’bySteve Smith,whichisfeaturedonthecover.(Formoreinformationaboutthisfriendly monthlycompetition,includinghowtoenter,visit https://rps.org/di/monthlycomp/. Keepaneyeoutforvideoslideshowsofmonthlycompetitionentrieson our YouTubechannel.)Stevewasdelightedtohearofhissuccessthismonth,it wasallveryclosewiththevotesthismonth.

“Likemanyphotographers,duringlockdownI watchednumerouszoompresentationsfrom variousphotographicoutlets.These presentations,atthetimeofthepandemic,were asaviour.Iwasabletologonandkeepintouch withtheoutsidephotographicworld,whilst learningnewskills.Onepresentation,which intriguedme,encompassedatechniqueof creatingshadowsbycontrollinglightingthrougha cardboardshape.

AsIenjoybothabstractandblack&white photography,Idecidedtoventurefurtherintothis technique.UsingthisstyleIexperimentedwithbasicresources,suchasapiece ofwhitecardboard,togetherwithasimplelightingsource.Thesetuprequireda darkspacetoensurethecontrolofshadows.Iusedadarkclothbackdrop, tripodandalight,whichinmycasewasfromastudiosoft-box.Ialsofound usingadiffuser(bakingparchmentpaperorsimilar)overatorchworkedwell. Thecamerawassetto‘liveview’andeventuallyasettingof2secondswithf11 gavemethecaptureIwashopingfor.Therewasagreatdealoftrialanderrors.

IusedLightroom,mainlytocroptheimage,monochromeconversionandmost importantlytoenhancetheshadows.The‘textureslider’wasslightlyadjustedto bringouttheshapeofthecardboardstructureagainstthedarkbackground.

INTENTIONALCAMERAMOVEMENT

InthisarticleMarkReevesFRPSdiscussesthechallengesofproducinggood imagesusingintentionalcameramovementandofferssuggestionsforimproving results.

IntentionalCameraMovement;isitreallyworthit?

Beingagluttonforpunishment,Ifrequentlygivetalkstolocalphotographic societiesaboutcreativeapproachestolandscapephotography.AndwhenIgive thesetalks,somebodyalwayssaystome,“Hmmm…ICM…Ihadagoatthat butmyresultswererubbish,soIgaveup.”Tocheerthemup,Itellthemthatin ordertoget21imagesformysuccessfulRPSFellowshippanel,Imadeover 1,500exposures,98%ofwhichwentinthebin!

Giventhat,isitworthit?Idefinitelybelieveso.Forme,ICMphotography opensupaworldofcreativityandameanstoproduceimagesthatcould otherwiseonlybecreatedwithapaintbrush.Oneofthemostenduringlypopular artformsisimpressionistpaintingandICMgivesusthetooltocreate impressionistphotography. Knowwhatgoodlookslike!

Itisthenatureofthebeastthatintentionalcameramovement(ICM) photographycanbeveryhit-and-miss.Thereasonissimple.Thetechnique reliesonmovingthecamerawhiletheshutterisopenanditisinevitablethat eachtimewemakeanewimage,wewillmovethecameraslightlydifferently. Somemovements,withadegreeofluckandnotalittlepractice,willleadto pleasingresultswhereasmanyotherswillnot.Whichmovementsworkwell dependsonthescenebeingphotographedandourownpersonaltastesas regardstheresults.

SothefirststepinICMphotographyhastobeknowingwhatwemeanby success.Ofcourse,thiswon’tbethesameforeveryonesoweallneedtohavea visioninmindofwhatwearetryingtoachieve.Isuggeststartingwithan internetimagesearchusingtheterm“ICMphotography”.Youwill,nodoubt, comeacrosslotsofimagesofblurredandstreakytreesbutinamongsttheseyou willfindawidevarietyofotherresultssuccessfullyorlesssuccessfullyportraying allmannerofsubjectsusingawiderangeofmovementstylesandshutter speeds.

Studytheresultsanddecidewhichyoulike.Bookmarktheseimagessoyoucan refertothemlaterbut,importantly,trytoworkoutwhatunifiestheimagesthat youlikeandthoseyoudon’t.Isitthesubjectmatter,theprocessingstyle,the natureofthemotionbluretc?Forme,successfulICMimageslookmorelike impressionistpaintingsthanlikephotographs,buttrytoclarifyinyourownmind whatsuccesswithICMmeansforyou.

Chooseyoursubject

ChoiceofyourICMsubjectisimportant.Aswithanyotherphotographicgenre orstyle,youhavetochooseasubjectthatinterestsyou,thatdrawsyouto portrayit.Withoutthis,youwillfeelnodrivetopracticeandlittlesatisfaction fromsuccess.Youalsoneedasubjectthatyoucaneasilyaccessforregular practice;theclosertohomethebetter.

Practiseyourmoves

Youwillquicklylearnthatdifferentsubjectsworkbetterwithsometypesof cameramovementthanothers.Sotrydifferentmoves;horizontal,vertical, diagonal,towardsorawayfromthesubject,circular,smoothorjerkyetc.Formy tastes,Ifindthatmovementinthedirectionofthemainlineswithinthescene oftenworkswell;e.g.verticalmovementwithtreesorhorizontalmovementwith flatlandscapes.

Composition

Aswithallphotography,goodcompositionisessentialtomakingapleasing image.ToachievethiswithICMisabitofachallengebecauseofthelossof compositionalcontrolthatcomeswithmovingthecameraaround.Itistherefore besttouseaviewpointorafocallengththatgiveslotsofspacearoundyour mainsubjecttoallowforcroppingandstraighteninglater.

Timingiscritical

Notonlywilldifferenttypesofmovementaffectyourresults,sowilldifferent shutterspeeds.Ifyourexposuretimeisshort,youwillneedtomovethecamera veryfastinordertorecordsufficientblur–butmovingthecamerafastmeans thatyouwillfinditdifficulttocomposeyourimagescorrectly.Toolongashutter speed,ontheotherhand,willmakeitmoredifficultforyoutokeepthecamera pointedatyoursubject.Aswithotheraspectsofthiscraft,experimentationwith differentshutterspeedswillpaydividends.Ihavefoundthataround½sec. usuallyworkswellforme.Ofcourse,toachievetheseslowspeedsduringthe dayusuallyrequirestheuseofaneutraldensityfilterbutitispossibletowork withoutoneearlyorlateinthedayorinparticularlygloomylight.

Focus

OneofthesurprisingthingsaboutICMisthatcorrectfocusingmatters. Despiteallthemotionblur,anout-of-focusimagestilllookswrong!Conversely, though,Ifindthatdepthoffielddoesn’treallymattermuch(andsoyoucan varytheapertureinordertoachieveyourdesiredshutterspeed,oruseshutterspeedprioritymode).

Equipment

Inmostways,theequipmentforICMworkismuchthesameasisneededforany otherphotography,butwithafewthingstobearinmind.Mostimportantly,you willneedlotsofbatterypowerandmemorycardcapacitybecauseyouwillneed totakelotsofimages!

Formostsubjects,longerlensesworkbetterthanwideronesbecauseofthe distortionassociatedwithwideanglelenses.Forexample,usingvertical movementwithawidelensproducesimagesthatfeelconstrictedinthecentre andsplayedoutwardsatthetopandbottom.Abitlikethispairofbrackets:)(

Andfinally,personally,IneveruseatripodforICMphotography.Iknowsome photographersdo,butIfinditrestrictsfreemovementwhilstprovidinglittle benefit.(DidanybodymentionBrexit?)

Processing

RAWfilesofICMimagesoftenfeeldeadorlifelessandsorequirespecial treatmentinpost-processing.Thereasonforthisisthatwhenwemovethe cameraduringanexposure,highlightsbecomeblendedintolessbrighttones andcoloursgetmushedintoeachother,producinglowcontrast,muddyimages. Addingcontrastandcolourbackintotheimageisthereforeanessentialpartof post-processing.

Intheprocessingofmysailingimages,IhaveusedmaskinginPhotoshopor Lightroomtoenablemetocontroltheexposure,contrastandsaturationofthe subjectsseparatelyfromthebackgrounds.

Toreducedetailsandcontrastinthebackgrounds,Ihaveprimarilydonethisby liftingandflatteningthetonecurves.

Multipleexposures

ICMworksparticularlywellwhencombinedwithdoubleormultipleexposures, adoptingadifferentdirectionortypeofcameramovementwitheachexposure. Itcanproduceparticularlyinterestingresultsbyusingdifferentblendmodesfor combiningtheimages.WhilstImuchpreferachievingtheseeffectsincamera,if yourcameradoesn’tenablethisthenthesameresultscanbeachievedby layeringimagesandusingdifferentblendmodesinPhotoshop.

IamdelightedthatnowwehavemovedonandtheRPShasre-introducedFace toFacemeetingsandseminars,ANDwestillhavetheopportunitytoshareand communicatewitheachotherusingthetechnologyZoomprovides.

IboughtmyfirstSLRmanyyearsagowhenIwasinmyearly20’s.Mycamera accompaniedmeonwalksandholidaysandwasalwaysatmysidewhenour childrenwereyoung.Istartedoffwithfilmphotographyandspentsometime experimentingwithmyowndevelopingandprinting.AsourchildrengrewupI wasabletospendmoretimeonmyphotography.Ijoinedalocalcameraclub about10yearsagowhichhelpedmyphotographyprogressandIcurrentlyhold thepositionofclubSecretary.
