Thankyoutothoseofyouwhoattendedthe DIgroupAGM.Onaveragewehad250 peopleonlinethroughouttheday,sothatis veryencouraging.Holdingitonlineenables somanymorememberstoparticipateaslikely itwouldhaveonlybeen50hadweheldit face-to-face.Howeverwedoappreciatethat somemembersdostilllikethelivemeetings, sowewillexplorethepossibilityofahybrid meetingfor2024.

Forthosewhowereonline,youwillhave heardhowwewill‘evolve’thevariousDI memberinitiativesthatweofferfor2023/4. InthenextissueofDIGIT,whichshouldbe withyouaroundtheendofthemonth/early April,youwillfindatranscriptofthatwhichI deliveredasmy‘LookingtotheFuture’slotat theAGM.Alreadyyoumayhavenoticed someminorchangestothingsweoffer.Forexamplewearepackagingseriesof workshopsinto‘bundles’tomakeiteasierforyoutobookforagiventopicand includingfeedbacksessionstoconsolidateyourlearning.TheseWorkshops bookupreallyquicklysodokeepaneyeonthewebpage

Werecentlyintroducedthee-circlesandnowhave5operatingviaZoom.These peer-to-peermeetingsareheldmonthlyonlinesoavailabletomoreorless anyonewhoisinterested.MoreinformationHEREDeborahLothiscontinuing tofindussomefirstclassSaturdayafternoonmonthlysessions,whichwefondly call‘BigDIG’meetings.TherecenttwofromLisaCarneyonsmartphone photographyandBillWardonICMandmultipleexposureseemedtohavereally gotyoufiredupandinspired.AsdidourAGMspeakers,aswesawlotsof examplesofmuchmorepunchymonoprocessingontheFacebookpostingswith memberscommentingthattheyweregivingitatryinthe‘styleofAdrianand Len’.

FortheDICommitteethisiswhatitisallabout–givingourmembersmeetings, workshopsandopportunitiestodeveloptheirphotographyinwhicheverway worksforthem,withpassionandinspiration.Wefeelitisimportantthateach membershouldfeelthereissomethingtheywanttoparticipatein,soifyouhave ideasofareaswearen’tcurrentlycoveringthatyoufeelweshouldconsiderthen dogetintouch.Memberfeedbackandthoughtsarealwayswelcomed.Email digchair@rps.org anytime.

IwasexcitedrecentlytoreceivemyinvitationtotheRHSBotanicalArt& PhotographyshowattheSaatchiGalleryinJune,thisiswherethoselucky people,selectedfromtheRHSPortfolioCompetition,areexhibited.Shortly afterthatIheardthatIreneStuppleshadbeenoneofthoseselected.Ihave cometoknowIrenethroughtheDIE-circleIattend,therestofthecircle,hadall beeninterestedtohearthatshehadentered,aswehadbeenencouragingher to”goforit’!IrenehadputherPanelupforappraisalattheRHSCritique session,thatDIorganisedinNovember,whereitwaswellreceived,andthathad boostedherconfidencetoapplyanduploadherentry.Shewasabsolutely thrilledtohavebeenselected,butsaidshewasexcitedandterrifiedinequal measureasnowshehastoPrintthemandsendherPanelforscrutinyand framing.IamverymuchlookingforwardtomeetingupwithIreneinperson, andseeingherPaneldisplayedintheSaatchi.

IwouldliketointroduceyoutoLoisWakemanwhohasrecentlyjoinedtheDigital ImagingCommitteeandtakenontheroleofWebEditor.Thisinvolvesher updatingthepagesandmakingsureeverythingpostediscurrentandallour eventsarebeingpromoted.

IwenttovisitLois’spersonalwebsite,muchofwhichfascinatedme,Iwas interestedtoreadofher‘DayJob”ThenIwenttoher‘Links’expecting somethingquitedifferenttowhatIactuallydiscovered.Thispromptedmetoask ifshewouldbeinterestedinwritingmeapiecefortheNewsletter,whatfollows detailsaninterestingaspectofFACEBOOKGroups

Thisarticlewasinspiredbyaquestionfromtheeditor,Melanie,whowas intriguedbyalistoflinksonmywebsite.Asafully-qualifiednerd,Ibelongtoa numberofesotericFacebookgroups(andamactivelyresistingjoininganumber ofotherssuggestedbymyfellowgroupmembers–it’salltooeasytodisappear downtherabbit-holeofever-morespecialisedinterestgroups–Ialreadyspend toomuchtimewonderingatwhatpeoplefindtoshowme!It’sthemodern equivalentofafavouritechildhoodpastime–lookingatatlases,encyclopaedias anddictionariesforaspecificthingandsuddenlyrealisingthatit’sdarkandyou stillhaven’tfoundwhatyouwerelookingfor…)

So,whichofmygroupsisthefavourite?That’slikeaskingmetonominatea favouritechild,soIwillstartwiththefirstoneIjoined,whichistheCorrugated IronAppreciationSociety.Despiteanoccasionalspatwhensomeone accidentallypostsaboutondulineorcementboards,thisisafriendlygroupof peoplewhoenjoythequirksandbeautyofthecrinklystuff.Abandonedbarns andcroftsfeatureheavily,asdoimmaculatetintabernacles,huts,industrial buildings,Australiansheepsheds,remoteshops,andlotsofweirdanimalshapedbuildingsinNewZealand.Ican’tgetquitesoexcitedatthepicturesof randombitsofrustytinstuckuptreesorinbrambles,buteachtohisown!

Talk-Walk-TalkStreetPhotographyInitiative

ThejointinitiativebetweenDigitalImagingandtwoRegionalGroupsinvolved deliveryofaZoomtalkonStreetPhotographyaimedatprovidingparticipants withsomeideasforanexcursion.RegionalgroupsinSWEnglandandSouthern Scotlandarranged5photowalksfollowedbydiscussionevents.

WalkswereheldinGlasgow, Dunfermline,Truro,Plymouthand Exeter.TheweatherforbothScottish walkswasdecidedlyinclement,which madeforsomeatmosphericimages, nottomentionenjoyablechatsina coffeeshop!Participantsmetupa fewweeksafterthewalkstoshare someoftheirimagesanddiscussthe initiative.

Itwasagreedthattheeventswere wellworthwhile,face-to-face meetingswereappreciatedandthe groupsenjoyeddiscussingtheresults. Thegroupsinvolvedwerekeento repeattheformatwithothertopics.

Wearehopingtobeabletorepeat theT-W-Tformatlaterintheyear,and consideringwoodlandandseaside opportunities.

DIrecentlyran‘StreetPhotographyJustGetOutandDoIt’, aworkshopwithJoeHoughton.Thecoursehasrecently finishedandJoeisbusycreatingaGalleryforallthe favouriteimages, fromthosewhoattendedthisworkshop. Itisbeingconstantlyupdatedasimagesareadded,you mightliketotakealook?HereistheQRCode

‘Streetphotographyhasalwaysappealedtome-thewayitcanhighlightour sharedhumanitywithallitshighsandlows,andconnectwiththeviewer emotionally.Iseekoutimageswhichreflectthis,capturingmomentswecanall relateto,butperhapsdon’tnoticeaswespeedpastinourbusylives.

Duringthecoursewehavebeenencouragedtoplaywithdifferentcompositionsandstyles.In thesamecoffeehouse(differentday)thisladywasreadingherbookwiththegorgeous Februarylightstreaminginonher.IhadjustreadupaboutpainterEdwardHopperandwith hiscompositionalstyleinmindIcomposedthisimage.Thepicturerequiredverylittlepost processing-sometimesyouarejustlucky.

Justwanderingroundthelocaltownasawthisteenagecoupleeatingtheirlunch.Thegirlwas quitebemusedwhenIcomplimentedherondramatictightsandwashappyformetotakethe shot.Ithoughtitwouldmakeanicedramaticmonoimage.

‘Thegroupwasfullofexperiencedandtalentedphotographers andwelearnedalotfromeachother,Joechairingandsteeringthe critiquesandaddingafewgemsofhisown.Greatfun-manythanks."

“Ihavealwayshadalikingforstreetphotographybutdidn’tseemtobe progressingwithmyphotography.Twoyearsofillnessandlockdownputmy motivationatrockbottom.HavingpreviouslyseentwoofJoe’sonline presentationsatmylocalcameraclubIwaspleasedtofindthiscourseoffered bytheRPS.

Fouronlinesessionsarescheduledeverytwoweeks,allowingtimetodigestthe coursecontentandprepareandpresentmy“Homework”withoutanyrushor stress.HomeworkiscritiquedbyallthoseparticipatingwithJoeaddingmuchto thediscussions,Joe’senthusiasmandknowledgeforthesubjectshonethrough andhewastrulyinspiring.Thegroupweretalented,veryfriendlyandwillingto sharetheirknowledge.

Ihavelearntmuchfromthiscourse,fromotherparticipantsandfromJoe,who hasawealthofexperiencetoshare,asaresultInowfindmyselfreinvigorated andreadytotaketothestreets.

Areflectioninthewindowofamusicshop.Thiswasanexperiment,the shoplightswereverybrightbutthestepsweredarkanddon’tgetmuch daylight.Ididn’texpectittoworkbutitdidwithoutmuchPP. Justshows,it’salwaysworthtrying.

Tunnel-vision:byJohnAnderton Wetalkedabouttheimportanceofleadinglinesinourimages,andhowtheycancreateasenseofdepth,so whenIwentoutlookingfordoorwaysandarches,IknewthatIalsowantedtoincorporatethisintomyimage. Iwasparticularlypleasedwiththewaytherailingsleadtheeyetothesilhouettedfigureandbeyond.

Wetalkedabouttheimportanceofleadinglinesinourimages,andhowtheycancreateasenseofdepth,so whenIwentoutlookingfordoorwaysandarches,IknewthatIalsowantedtoincorporatethisintomyimage. Iwasparticularlypleasedwiththewaytherailingsleadtheeyetothesilhouettedfigureandbeyond.

Ilovetheshapesthatcanbecreatedbylightandshadowoutonthestreet.Iwaswalking alongthisshoppingarcade,andInoticedhowthesceneinfrontofmewascomprisedoffour, roughtriangles.However,Ireallywantedafiguretobecentre-stageandsoIwaitedawhile forsomeonetowalkdowntheexactcentreofthewalkway.Fortunately,thispersonobliged!

JohnAnderton said, Isetouttocapturewhatevertakesmyfancy,andstreetphotographyhas alwaysbeenthemostenjoyablewaythatIhavefoundtodothis.

However,itcanbeasolitarypursuitsotheopportunitytospendtime(albeit online)withotherstreetphotographers,sharingimagesandideaswasreally enjoyable.IcanhonestlysaythatIcameawayfromallfoursessionsfeeling inspiredandwithanurgetopickupmycameraandgetoutthere.

TherearelayersinthisimagewhichIthinkworkwelltogether.Thereflectionthroughthe mirrorhascapturedtheuniquenessoftheretroshopwindowdisplayopposite.Wealsohavea ratherboredlookinggirlcomingoutoftheshop,butformethemostcaptivatingthingisthe expressionontheforegroundgirl’sfacewhichaskssomanyquestions.

Havingbeenimmersedintheworldof photographyforthelast23yearsgaininga PhotographydegreefromNottingham TrentUniversityandcompletingformal trainingineducation,Hannahhasbeen teachingtraditionalandcreativefilmand digitalphotographyforthelast15years. ShelaunchedherPhotographyBusinessin 2018.
