EversinceJunetheworkoftheDigitalImagingCommitteehasbeen overshadowedandderailedbythefailedimplementationofnewcustomer relationshipmanagement(CRM)softwareinRPSHQ.Youwillknowthisasthe new‘portal’.Foronereasonoranother,thesystemwaslaunchedbeforeit wasworkingproperly,andtheensuingproblemshavebeentoonumerous andprofoundtodetailhere.DICommitteehavespentcountlesshours wrestlingwiththesystem,feelingallthetimelikeAlice,runningveryhardto stayinthesameplace.
Thesystemforputtingeventsuponlineandbookingeventsisriddledwith bugsanderrorsandtheRPSishavingtroubleproducinglistsofDigital Imaginggroupmembersforvariouspurposes,sowearenotconfidentthat everyonereceivedthatlastissueofDIGITinJune.Wedonotknowwhohas joinedDIsinceJuneandthelistsusedforemailingoutannouncements cannotbeproducedreliably.

Manythankstoeveryonewhovotedthis month.
Thisisanexamplefrommyseriesofimagesof oilfloatingonwater.In2021Iwassuccessful withmyFRPSsubmissionofmonochromeprints fromthisseries,intheVisualArtgenre(seeDIG Accoladeissue10).Ihavesincefurther developedtheprojecttoproduceanewsetof relatedimageswithadditionalvarietyandthe addeddimensionofcolour.
Boththemonochromeandcolourseries examinethejuxtapositionofdarkandlight createdfromtherefractiveeffectsofoilandwater.Theadditionofcolouradds theopportunitytoexploreinterestingcolourrelationships.
Controllingtheoildropletscanbefrustratingbecausetheyseemtohaveminds oftheirown,andarenotalwayslonglived.Ittakesabitofskillandalotof patiencebutitislikeagamesoIfinditfun.Inevitableblemishesneedtobe removedinpostprocessingtocreatetherefinedaesthetic.
Itisnotreallyfeasibletogiveanindividualpoetictitletoeverypicture,hence theuseofaseriesnameanddescription.

TheDIGroupneedanewSecretary-isthissomethingyoumightenjoy?
TheDIcommitteeareahappylotofvolunteers,friendlyandeasytoworkwith. Wehavewelldefinedroles,sotheSecretary’sroleisn’tthatbigorcomplicated. RegrettablyourcurrentlovelySecisleavingtogotravellingandwewishherall theverybest.Howeversheisn’tleavingtillFebruary,sothisgivesthenew persontimetoworkalongsidehertogetuptospeed.
TheRPSreliesonvolunteersandfromexperienceIknowthatthosewhoget involvedgetsomuchmorefromtheirSocietymembership.Theymeetawider networkofinterestinganddiversepeople,oftendevelopinglongerterm friendships.
TheDISecretarybasicallytakestheminutesatour6committeemeetingsp.a., butasweruntheseonZoomyoucandoitfromthecomfortofyourownhome. TheSecbookstheAGMannuallyandcompilestheannualreturnofvolunteer hours.HoweverthelatterissomethingthenewCRMshouldtakecareofindue course,soonejoblessfortheSecretary!

DuringthelastDIcommitteemeeting,thesubjectofDigitalandFull membershipcameup.
DidyouknowthatyoucanchooseeitherFullmembershipat£18peryearor Digitalonlymembershipwhichis£9peryear?Inthesedifficultfinancialtimes, everylittlesavinghelps.Plus,ifyoudonothaveusefortheprintedcontentthat theDIgroupsendsout,thenitallhelpstheenvironment.
Thatisnottosaythatwearewantingmemberstostopthefullmembership–far fromit.Itisjustacaseofpointingthisouttoyou.Haveyoualsoconsidered passingonyourDImagazinestootherphotographersoryourcameraclubwhen youhavefinishedwiththem?

Whethertoprintanimageorjusttoshareitdigitallyisdowntoindividualchoice andtheimageitself.TherearemanyimagesthatItakejustforfunandshare onlywithfamilyandfriends.Thentherearethoseimagesprintedfora competition(cameracluborothertypesincludingtheDIprintcompetition), onesforhangingupathome,onestobesoldandonesforDistinctions.
Personally,Iwouldalwaysadviseanyonewhoisdoingorconsideringdoinga RPSdistinctiontodoaprintedsubmission.Onceitleavesyourhandsandgets sentofftoRPSHouse,youknowexactlywhatitisgoingtolooklikewhenthe assessorsseeit.Ofcourse,Irecognisewhyitisfavourabletodoadigital submission,particularlyforoverseasmembers.Infact,Iknowachapwhois preparinghisFRPSintheUSAandthecostsofshippingmadehisdecisionfor himtosubmitdigitally.
ForbothaccurateprintinganddigitaldisplayingofyourworkIwouldadvocate calibratedscreens.Digitallyifyouprepareyourimageonascreenthatiskept calibratedthenaslongastheintendedviewerislookingatyourimageona calibratedscreenthenyouwillhaveanideaofhowyourimagewilllooktothem.
Duringlockdown,mycameraclub(likemanyothers)rancompetitionsviaZoom. Thejudgeshadbeensentthedigitalsubmissionsbeforehand.Ononeoccasion ajudgewascomplainingaboutblownhighlightsandcrushedblacksonan image,however,onmyscreen(andviazoom)itlookedfine.Ilatercontactedmy friendwhoseimageitwas,andshesaiditwasneitherblownorcrushedorher screeneitherandshefeltveryfrustratedbythematter.
Onanotheroccasionthejudgewascomplainingthatthereweredustspotson animage,onlytopauseandthenadmititwashimlookingattheimageona dirtyscreen!NeedIsaymore….
Personally,IliketoprintathomesoIcanhavefullcontrolovermyimage.Thisis greatbutinvolvesnotonlyexpenseofbuyingadecentqualityprinter,paper, andinks,butanotherconsideration–thesizeofthedamnthings!
Thisismyoffice(thirdsmallbedroom)setupandtheprinterdoestakeupalot ofspace–whichyoucanseeeveninthisfisheyeimagebelow: Theprinter–aCanonPro10Sishidingonthefar-righthandsideunderadust coverandprovidinganicespotforacoupleofmybearstositon!
MyhusbandmademealittlestandforitsoIcankeepsomeofmypaper underneathit–itisadvisabletokeepyourpaperflat.
Printingathomecanbeafaff,butitisgenuinefunwaitingforyourprintto comethrough–aslongasthesettingssenttotheprinterarecorrect,andyou donotnoticeamistakethatyoudidnotspotbeforetheprint–howmany timeshaveIdonethatone!
Peoplewhodonotprintathomeoftensaythatwhentheyhavetriedit,the printneverlooksliketheimagetheyseeonthescreen.Thisiswherecalibrating thescreencomesintoit’sownandusingthecorrectcolourspacestoprocess andprintin.Personally,IuseAbodeRGBforeverything.
Ideallyaprinterwithatleastteninkswillproducethebestresults.Thechoiceof paperisalsoahugefactorintheprocess–youcanseewhyprintinghasbeen calledatDarkArt.
Ifyouthinkaboutprintingasanotherstageoftheprocessofproducingan imageratherthanjustpressingPRINT,thenexpectationswillbeunderstood.
Youdonotjustpointyourcameraatsomethingandshoot.Youconsiderthe composition,thelenschoice,lighting,apertureetc.Whenediting,choicesare madeintermsofprocessinginLightroomandPhotoshopandthemanyother editingsuites.
Therefore,whenitcomestoprintingchoicesmustmadetoo.
Earlyoninmyphotographyatipwasgiventometojustliftthetonecurve slightlyinLightroomatthemidpointbeforesendingtheimagestotheprinter. Thatjustgivestheimagetobeprintedaslightliftthatislostfromwhatyousee onthescreen.MyownbesttipthatIcansharewithyouisonethatIlearntthe veryhardway.OnCanonprintersitisthelittlecheckboxinthecustomsettings ofthepropertiesoftheprinterwhichsays,“Preventpaperabrasion.”Ihavethat ticked–always!
WhenIwaspreparingformyARPS(whichfeaturesalotofblack)Iwantedtouse somegoodfineartpaper.IsettledonPermajetFibreBasedDistinctionwhichis 320gthick.Itneedstobeloadedattherearoftheprinter.Thepaperhada slightcurltoit(eventhoughIstoreditflat)butwasuseableandIsetabout printingmy15ARPSprints.Whenitcametomountingthem,Inoticedthat
almostalltheprintshadsomefineindentationsrunningalongthepage.These arecalledPizzaCutterlines,whenthespoolthatpullsthepaperthroughthe machinemarksthepaper.Withtheblackbackgroundsinmyprintsthesewere reallynoticeable.
IchangedpapertoPermajetFBRoyalGlosswhichis310gthick(thisisnowmy paperofchoice),butIhadthesameproblem.
IsearchedGoogleforhelp–therewasnotmuchthere.Iboughtapaperroller–thatdidnotwork.Ipulledmyhairour–thatdidnotwork.Finally,Iwaslooking onaphotographyforumandfoundasuggestionaboutthepaperabrasion setting.Thiswasthekey,andthisworkedatreat.Idonotevenhavetousethe paperrollernow.
Sogoodluckwithyourownprinting.Remembertoturnyourprinteronatleast onceaweekandsendsomeplainpaperthroughit,justsotheinknozzlesdonot block–anotherunnecessaryexpense!

DigitalImaginghasasignificantnumberofmemberslivingoutsideUK.Wewere interestedtounderstandtheirneeds,andtheextenttowhichDIhelpedthem, soaskedthemtocompleteashortquestionnaire.Thankyoutothosethattook part!
Wefoundthatoftherespondentsthemajorityreadandappreciateour publications,andattendouron-linetalks,asmallerproportionhavealsotaken partinworkshops.
Thefactthatalthoughthetimeoftalksischosentomaximiseaccessacrossthe globeitdoesnotsuiteveryonewasmentioned.Wedoalreadyrecordtalks wherethespeakeragreestothis,andprovidethoseregisteringtimelimited access,wewillmakethismoreexplicitinfuture,thoughcannotguaranteeit! Somerespondentsaskedustoconsiderrecordingworkshops,howeverin workshopsaninteractivecomponentisessentialmakingrecordingimpractical. HowevertheRPSdoesofferasmallnumberofanytimecourses(listedintheRPS “What’son”pages).

AsmallnumberofpeopleacceptedtheinvitationtohaveaZoomchatwitha memberoftheDIcommitteetodiscusswhatthegroupcouldoffer,andIhope thattheyenjoyedtheirchats!
Finallyweaskedaboutthechallengesforoverseasmembersintheirdistinctions journey,asmallnumberdidfeelthatlivingoutsideUKaddedadditionalhurdles, sowearehopingtoincludeacontributioninafutureadditionofDIGITwhich addressesthis.

ArakuIsThePlace,WhereWeAreNot!
Whetherwerelishorreviletheurbanworldwedwellin, itisalivemetaphorofhumanpower.So,itbosses aroundtomakeusbelievethatgardensofbonsaitrees andCrotonplantsarethe‘nature’.Thisso-called ‘nature’isverymuchtobe‘controlled’and‘preserved’. Therefore,actualnatureistheplacewherewe,the civilised,urbanised,arenot.So,Arakuisthatoriginal andaboriginalnaturewithadistinctivetribal agglomeration.ArakuValleyofAnantagiriand SunkarimettaReservedForest,isoneoftherich biodiversityareasintheEasternGhatsofIndia.Thehill stationinAlluriSitharamanRajudistrict,erstwhile Visakhapatnamdistrict,locatedatabout1,200MSL,is tuckedawayinthenorth-easterncornerofAndhra PradeshandsharesaborderwithOdisha.
SometimesIfeelthattherearesomeplaceswhereI havebeenveryoften,butunabletoclicksimilar photographsthatwereshotduringmypreviousvisits. WhenIgetmyselfimmenselyinvolved,naturegenerally extendsitshelpinghandtosupportmein accomplishingthemission.But,natureatArakuisnot likethat.Itisauniqueandobliviontype;itiseverchangingateachglance.Inthelifeofevery photographer,howfamous,orhowamateurishhe/she is,theremustbesomemomentsofmoratorium.The momentsofinertiatrulyinterpretwhatwehave,what wemightlose.MyrecurringsojournstoArakukeepme intheinertdungeonsofsolitudetoaugmentmyurgeto photographyasavitalfactorofmylife.Thus,my creativeproductionofArakuthroughphotographshas anadditionaldimensionintheformofitsconservation.
InthefollowingphotographsIhavetriedtoencapsulate theroutineoftheinhabitantsofAraku.Whileclicking them,Ionceagainrealisedthatbeautyresidesintheir world,notinthelensofthebeholder.Thatrealisation helpedmetouseitinthephotographsthatassistedto directaestheticattentiontotheirworldofwildserenity anddailyvivacity.
Iphotographedapotter,an artisanandatruewizard. Heisbestowedbyhis ancestorswiththeartof turningthewheeltoshape thedocileclayinto pragmaticshapes. Thumbingthenosetothe timesofplastic,the ambidextrouspotteris creatingmundaneand rudimentaryutensils.
