It’soneofseveralsubmitted(successfully)asanARPSFineArtpanel. ThisoneoriginatedasastraightimageofastaircaseintheMuseumofLiverpool(see below).

Iwantedtocreateanabstractthatpreservedthemainanglesandedgesoftheoriginal, whileallowingfreedomtomanipulatethecolours.IachievedthisusingtheGradient MapfilterinPhotoshop,whichallowsonetomapgreylevelsontoanypaletteof coloursofone'schoosing.

Theresultsareusuallysurprising,andsometimesevenpleasing!

Withthe‘newlook’DIONLINE,wearemakingsomechangestothefrontcover. TheWinnersoftheMonthlyCompetitionwillnowbefeaturedprominentlyinside thepublication.

Myfeelingwas‘thatwasinterestingbut didn’treallystarttounravelhowtheRPS cansquarethecirclewhenitcomestoAI though’.Wecanallagreetotallygenerated imagesusingAIisn’tphotography–but thatdoesn’tmean‘jobdone’.Inmy personalopinionunlesswefindawayto embraceitopenlythenitwillgo underground,andworkswillbepresented as‘photography’whenreallytheyhave beencreatedusingAI.ButIacceptmy opinionislikelynotawelcomedbymany andcertainlyisn’tofficial.

SowhonoticedtheupgradetoDIGNews lastmonthandthenamechangetoDI Online?Didyoulikethenewlook?Iwas somewhatsurprisednottoreadmember feedback,forandagainst,ontheDI Facebookpage.Youwereallunusually quiet.

Noquitesoquietthoughwhenwe announcedtheDIAIExperiment.There wasonelivelylittleFBdebate,butagain perhapsnotasmuchasonemighthave expected.Doesthatmeanwearegettingit rightIwonder–oryouhavealllostinterest?

ObviouslyAIisthehottopicandhighly controversialrightnow.Ourexcellent articleonthetopicinlastmonth’sDIOnline waswellwrittenandgavelotsoflinksand information.ThentherewastheThames ValleyRegions’Zoommeetingwhere PresidentSimonHilltalkedtoa representativefromShutterstock.

InthispresentationTonythatexamines numerousapproachestophotographingthe coastandlargelyfeatureslocationshereinthe UK.Theaimisnottodwellonthemore "romantic"elementsoftheBritishcoast,butis areminderthatthenotionof"thecoast"can embracemanyaspects.

THEMEMBERSCHOICEOFTHEIRFAVOURITEIMAGE

ThewinnerofourAprilmonthlyonlinecompetitionwas‘BlueFlowerwithStriped Vase’byCherryLarcombe,whichisfeaturedhere.Cherrytellsushowshecaptured herwinningimage.

Iamverymuchdrawntominimalist compositionsandfindthatthisapproach cangoverywellwithflowerandstilllife photography.Idobuyahugeamountof vases,jugsandbottlesatcharityshops whichinturninspiresmetocomeupwith ideas.Thisbeautifullyshapedvasewas noexceptioninthatIimmediatelysawan opportunityforusingblackandwhitewith limitedcolourinputtohopefullycreatean imagewithsomeimpact.Iusedead flowersalotofthetimeastheycanadd somemuchmoreinterestinganddifferent shapesthanperfectlyfreshones.The colourandtexturechangestogivethat addeddetail.Thisdeadflowerwas photographedwithawhitebackground

andtheninvertedtoproducearather unnaturalcolourbutatthesametime givingsomevibrancytotheimageand accentuatingtheshapes.Inthisway thefinishedimageisabouttheshapes andtonesratherthanshowcasinga beautifulflower.

Iwouldrecommendanyphotographer whoisperhapsneedinginspirationfor theirstilllifeworktoregularlyvisitthe charityshopswhereyouwillfind numerousopportunitiestogiveyou instantideas,mostlyforlessthanthe priceofacupofcoffee!

Ioftenwanderaroundatownorcitywithmycamera,aimingforalocationwhichI haveresearched,buttakingshotsofanythingthatIlikeontheway.AlthoughIdonot feeltiedtoanyparticulargenre,Ifindthatmanyofmyimagesareofarchitecture, especiallydetails.Iamattractedtorepeatinglines,shapesandpatterns.Iseemtobe particularlydrawntostairs.

“Curves”isoneofmyfavourites.Itwastaken5yearsagointheBlavatnicSchoolof GovernmentinOxford.Thisstunningbuildingisinthenew"RadcliffeObservatory Quarter"(formerlythesiteoftheRadcliffeInfirmary).TheSchoolofGovernmentis notopentothepublictowanderaround,exceptonoccasionalopendayssuchas during“OxfordOpenDoors”,(HeritageOpenDays)inSeptember.

Itookanumberofshotsfromthisposition,waitingfortherightpersontoappear belowme.Eventuallyamanstoodinjusttherightplace.Iremovedanumberof distractionsbycloningandconversiontomonochrome.Iwasstillunhappywiththe imageandsetitasideforseveralmonths.WhenIlookedatitagain,Irealisedthat rotating20degreesanticlockwiseemphasisedtherelationshipsbetweenthecurves.

The“TulipStaircase”intheQueen’sHouse,Greenwich isalocationwhichhasrewardedrepeatedvisits.

Itisnotsurprisingthatmanyjudgeshaveseenasurfeitofspiralstaircasesandthe TulipStairinparticular.Thereddoorandblueskylightin“StJohnsCollegeSpiral Staircase”makeitjustthatbitdifferentfrommanyspiralstairimages.Thislocation (NewCourt,StJohn’sCollege,Cambridge)islesswellknown,involvingaslight diversionfromtherecommendedtouristroute.

Internalstaircasestendtobepoorly litsoIamstilllearninghowtogetthe bestcompromisebetweenISO,fstop/depthoffield,andhand-held shutterspeed.Tripodsarenot allowedinmanystaircaselocations evenifIhadtheenergytocarryone aroundallday.Denoisingsoftwareis improvingbutthereisatrade-off betweensharpnessandnoise reduction.

Thiswasnotaproblemwhentaking “Curvedsteps”whichwasshot outsidetheredevelopedBattersea PowerStation.Therewasenough lightfor1/125s,ISO100,atf/7.1.

Iknewwheretogotofindthisstaircasehavingseenshotstakenbyothers.Research beforemyvisitshowedthatitisamuch-photographedsubject.Photographing architecture,likesculpture,isphotographingsomeoneelse’sartwork,soIpreferifI can,toputsomethinguniqueintotheimage.Includingthesmallfigureatthebottom ofthefirstofthesephotoshelpsmetofeelthatthisshotisabitmore“myown”.

“CleaningtheStairs”showswhatmightbecalledatriangularspiral. Thetwofiguresprovideaddedinterest.

Iwaswaitingtoincludeapersoncomingdownthestair.Itwaspureluckthatthe figureranacrossmakinganevenbettershot.

“Conversationonafireescape”.This viewoftheLloydsBuildinginLondon wastakenfrom“TheGardenat120”, aroofgardenwithgoodviewsandfree publicaccess.

“Stair,BannisterandDoor”wastaken recentlyattheWellcomeCollectionin London.Ifoundoutaboutthissteel stairwaybysearchingonline.Ihopethat thisangleoffersaslightlydifferentview.

“StairintheVandA”wastakenina 2017stairwellintheSainsbury GalleryintheVictoriaandAlbert Museum.Whenthisshotwastakenin 2019,thestairwastheexitroute fromthe“ChristianDior:Designerof Dreams”exhibition,whichexplains theimagesonthewall.

Ihaveanumberoflocationson mylistyettovisit.Recently, whileinLondontakingphotos ofsteps,Imetanother photographerwho recommendedtheGeometric StaircaseinStPaul’s.In Birmingham,anartist suggestedthestairinAston Hall,whichstillboastsa cannonballholefromtheCivil war.Otherplaces,suchas CanaryWharfJubileelinetube stationescalator,Iwantto revisittotrytogetabetter image.

Advanceplanningand revisitinglocationsareboth goodwaystogetbetter pictures.However,thereisa specialsatisfactiontobehad fromfindingasubjectby chance.Thatwasthecase recentlywhenIfound“Stair withlights”attheentranceto HarveyNicholsstoreinthe Mailbox,Birmingham.

Currentlymymajorroleinthecommitteeis beingpartoftheteamthatarrangethe onlineevents.Ifeelprivilegedtobepartof theteamandworkwithsuchaprofessional groupofhardworkingcommitteemembers. Istartedphotographywithaboxcamera andIthinkoneofmyearlyshotswasofmy cattakenwhilstlayinginlonggrassand lookingupatthecat!Nowmucholder,Ican onlysafelylayonthegrassifIhave someonereadytohelpmetomyfeet.

IwastaughttoprintB&Winanearly cameraclubbytheexpertsintheclubandI enjoyedthatgreatly.ThatwaswhereI developedmyloveofcontrastyB&Wasthe clubwasverycompetitiveandtheirlightbox forprintswasafirehazardand conventionallyprintedprintslookedwashed out!Thiswasallinthedayswhensuch thingswereuncontrolled!

Igaveupdarkroomphotographywhenmy childrencamealongandItookup competitiveOffroaddrivinginLandRovers. ThatwasanextremelyexpensivehobbysoI decidedtogobacktophotographywhen mydaughterslefthomeasitwasmuch cheaper.Ijokedthatmylifewasintwo parts:BCandADi.e.BeforeChildrenand AfterDaughters.

IpurchasedanOlympusE1andjoined FordingbridgeCameraClub (https:// www.fordingbridgecameraclub.org.uk).I soonbecameclubsecretary,apostIstill hold.

Thiswasoneofmyfirstentriesintoa FordingbridgeclubcompetitioncalledLes, Linda&Harley,itdidquitewell.Ihadasked LesandLindato“model”forme.The realityoftheirexpressionswasLindawas wonderingwhyIwaslayingontheground andLesheardaloudbanginanadjacent carparkandlookedover.Serendipity.

WhenIapproachedretirementIdecided tojointheRPStoexperience “excellenceinphotography”.Ibecamea moderatorforDIontheRPSForum.I hadagreattimeandalotofthatwas teachingphotographyandhelpingwith technicalissues.Thatforumhada sectionrunbytheImagingScience groupwhereyoucouldasktechnical questions.ThatiswhereImetDrTony Kayewhowasresponsibleformy educationinColour,colourmanagement andthegeneralscienceofphotography.

JanetHainesaskedmetojoinheronthe DIcommitteewhenshefirststoodas Chair.Astheysaytherestishistory ☺

Iwasaskedtoshowsomefavourite imagesbutIhavemanyandtheychange withtime.Howeverpartofmy PhotographicJourneywastobea memberoftheMyFourThirdswebsite whereImetphotographersfromallover theworldandIhaveremainedfriends withsomeandincontactwithmore.
