SueTothamhasresignedherroleasthePrintExhibitionorganiser.ThankstoSue forherefforts,especiallyindealingwiththechaosof2020.IanThompsonhas agreedtorunboththePrintandtheProjectedImageCompetitionsandtakeson theroleofCompetitionSecretary.Thismeansthereisavacancyfortheroleof PrintExhibitionorganiser.Thisinvolvesfindingvenuesthatcandisplayourprints andorganisingthelogisticsofdeliveryoftheprintstoandfromvenues.
BarrieBrownhasresignedasHeadofPublications,asthisroleisnowredundant, butBarrieistakingontheroleofCentresLiaisonwherehewillreachoutand supporttheCentresinkeepingincontactwiththeiraudiencesandperhaps runningtheirownonlineevents.BarriewillretainhisplaceontheCommittee.
DeborahLothbecomesHeadofCommunications,toensureconsistencyof messageacrossourcontactwithourmembersandthewiderworld.Deborahhas alreadybeendoingthis,sothisjustformalisestheposition.
SueHuttonistakingontheroleofDIGWebEditorandDickSaundershas agreedtoworkwithherinsplittingtherole.ManythankstoSueVainesfor rescuingusbysteppinginandkeepingthewheelsturningastemporaryWeb Editor,andforhertimeinhandingovertoSueHuttonandDick.

ThisshotwastakeninSintrain2015.Ihadoverlooked itatthetimeanditwasonlywhenrevisitingsomeold shotsduringlockdownthatIrealisedthatIhad missedafewthatIliked.Inthisonethepinksand yellowshadpromptedmetotaketheshotinthefirst place.
Icroppedtheoriginaltoabout2/3ofitssizeineach directiontoemphasisethemanyrectanglesandchose thatasatitle.IposteditonDIG’sFacebookgroup andwasdelightedtogetsomeveryfavourable comments.ThankyouDIGmembers.
Iwastravellinglightonthatparticularholiday,takingjustacoupleofcompact cameraswithme.ThiswastakenwithaCaplioR7whichIhadhadsince2008.It isusefulbecauseithasa7.1xopticalzoomgivingitafocallengthofupto200 mm(35mmequivalent)partlyduetoitstinysensor.

ItisperhapsbestthatIcomecleanfromtheoutset! WhenDeborahaskedifIwouldintroducemyselfto thereadersof DIGNews Iquestionedwhethera photographerwhopredominantlyshootsfilmmight appearasabitofafraudwritingsomethingforthe DigitalImagingGroup.However,themoreIthought aboutit,themoreIfeltthatIcouldjustifyitontwo counts…firstly,mypersonalwork-almostentirely film-isultimatelyscannedfordigitalprinting; secondly,myprofessionalworkisalmostentirely digital,suchisthedemandforspeedbetweentakingtheshot,emailingitback totheofficeanditendinguponthesub-editor’scomputer.So,withthat justificationfirmlyestablished,letmeintroducemyself-andmyRPS‘journey’toDIGmembers.
Istartedtalkingphotographsattheageofthreeand thepassionforphotographystayedwithme throughoutmyschoolyears,flourishedatartcollege andnow,completelyundiminished,drivesmywork asaprofessionaleditorialanddocumentary photographer.Inmylate‘teens,myparentsgave meanOlympusOM-10camera(withaManual Adapter!)andwithonlya50mmstandardlens,Iset mysightsongainingmyLRPSwhichIachievedin 1982,aged17.
Thefollowingyear,Istartedasa‘fresher’at BlackpoolCollegetostudyforanHNDin professionalphotography.Inthelate70sandearly 80s,Blackpoolwasperhapstheforemostcollegein theUKforanyoneaspiringtobeaprofessional photographer.Igraduatedin1985,ayearearly(with twodiplomas,oneinprofessionalphotographyand oneingraphicdesign),foregoingmyfinalyearand
SimonHillaged3andahalf byIanHill.Photographof mewithmyfirstcamera takenbymyfatherinMay 1967.
theProfessionalQualifyingExamtoacceptajobofferasanadvertising photographer.BeforeIleftBlackpool,IreceivedtheBritishInstituteof ProfessionalPhotography‘StudentoftheYear’Awardand,duringmyfinalyear,I gainedmyARPS.
AfewmonthsafteracalamitouseventoutsideofHarrodsinvolvingme,my assistantandtheEasterbunny(thatisanotherstoryforanotherday!)Icameto theopinionthatadvertisingandIwerenotmeanttohavealong-standing relationship.Lookingforanescaperoute,Iacceptedamagazinecommissionto recordthearchaeologicalexcavationofamedievalcemeteryinthecityofYork. Thisdecisionwouldinfluencetherestofmyprofessionallife-asaphotographer andasaninterpretativedesigner.Eventually,IjoinedthestaffoftheYork ArchaeologicalTrustasitsHeadofPhotographyandfrom1987Iledagroupof fivephotographersrecordingthearchaeologyandarchitectureofthecityof York.

Ireallyenjoygettingoutintothecountryside,toanaturereserveorriverbank, andseeingwhatImightfindtophotograph.Thisexperienceandtypeof photographyisaperfectwaytoboostmentalwell-being.
MyfirsttwophotographsweretakenatRSPBBemptonCliffswhereIspentafew hoursphotographingGannetsastheywheeledandhoveredabovetheclifftop, justpriortolanding.AttheendofthedayIwasabletocaptureshotsofaBarn Owlasithuntedacrossthesurroundingfieldsintheeveninglight.
Naturephotographycanbefrustratingassomedaysyougettoseeverylittle butthenotherdaysyoucanhitthejackpot.OnarecentvisittoWWTMartin MereIwasabletocaptureaReedWarblerfeedingajuvenileCuckoo,whichwas anamazingsighttowitness.
MyfinalphotographisofaShort-EaredOwl,whichIwasabletogetquiteclose to.ThoughthebranchesareabitofajumbleIhavetriedtodiffusethemby reducingclarityandsaturation,allowingthesubjecttostandoutmore.Thisbird isoneofmyfavouritesandIcan’twaitforthewinterwhenitshouldreturntoits coastalfeedinggrounds.Ithinkoneofthekeystonaturephotographyistokeep takingimagesofthesamespeciesinordertolearnaboutbehaviour,fieldcraft andoptimalcamerasettingsandhopefully,overtime,getsomegreatimages.

Thepastfewmonthshavebeenrestrictiveintermsofopportunitiestotraveland photographbecauseoftheongoinglockdownbutI’mquitepositivethingswill takeaturnforthebettersoonandhopefullywillbeabletoembarkonanother photographicjourney.

Asformanyofus,myinterestwasinspiredbymy father.Laterinlife,IjoinedWellingtonCameraClub anditwasherethatIfoundfunandfriendship, togetherwithadesiretoimprovemyownpersonal photography.LivinginSomersetandbeingcloseto theDevonborder,Iwasabletoseekoutbeautiful sceneryonmydoorstep.Landscapephotographyand walkingonacoastpathorbeach,isandhasbeen,my mainpassion.Idecidedtotryforaccreditationwith theRPSandIwasfortunatetobesuccessful,justafterIretiredbackto GloucestershireinNovember2014.
IthoughtitwouldbedifficulttofindaclubwhereIfeltasmuchathome,butI wasveryfortunateinjoiningKempseyClub,wherethereisjustasmuch
encouragement,funandsupport.Workshops,priortoCovid,areanatural feature,togetherwithtutorialstohelpuslearnnewskills.Zoommeetingshave surprisedusallandareverysuccessful.
Bepreparedtobechallenged,asIhavebeenaskedtotake“peopleand occasiontypeimages”.“Whatme”,wasmythought,“I’malandscapegirl”. However,withagoodfriend,wehadsuchfun,particularlywitha“Calendar Girls”shootforalocalWIGroupandthenfora“MensGroup”atalocal hospice.Wefelthonouredandhumbledtobeaskedandintheprocess,they wereabletoraisemoneyfortheirlocalcharities.
Thesedays,Iamintheprocessoflearninghowtocreatemorepastelstyle/ texturedimagesofflowersandlandscapes.Sadly,myhusbandhasbeenill recently,sowearespendingmoretimeathome.However,thismeansthatmy areaofphotographyhaschangedalittleandIrecentlypurchasedaLensbaby Velvet58mmlens.Iamhavinggreatfun,althoughIhavesomuchtolearnwith techniqueandediting.
Insummary,Iwouldsay,enjoyyourphotographyandthefriendshipsthatyou make!Keeplearningandbeopentonewideasandinterests.Itisnotalways easy,butitisveryworthwhile!

Withrestrictionsonmeetingvenuesaffectingallmannerofgatherings,itisnot hardtoseewhyDigitalImagingCentresarehavingtroubleresumingtheir previousstyleandfrequencyofprogramming.Manyarenowtakingtheirevents online.Sokeepaneyeontheeventpageforanythatseeminterestingtoyou. Youmightnotbeabletotraveltothereal-lifeevent,butitcouldbemoved onlineinthecomingweeks.
TheDigitalImagingonlineeventprogrammewe’vebeenrunningsinceAprilwill continueindefinitely.Newonlineeventsarebeingplannedforthroughoutthe autumnandintotheNewYear.
Perhapsthemost-often-quotedlivingphotographerintheworldisrelatively unknownintheUK.Sowe’veaskedoneofhisgreatadmirerstofillusin.
MyintroductiontoBrookswasmoreofaslow discovery.Itstartedwithsomeonegivingmeacopyof amagazinecalled LensWork.
Thatwasarevelation,aphotographicmagazinewith superbimages,talkingabouttheartofimages,the whynotthehow,noadvertsforcamerasandbarelya sentenceperarticleaboutthecameraused.
IdiscoveredPNC,PhotographyNotCameras,amantra thatIhaveadopted.Ilovearchitecturebutdon’twant advertsforcementmixersinbooksaboutarchitecture.
LensWork widenedmyappreciationofphotographyandmademethinkmore aboutwhatIdidphotographically.Then LensWork introducedmeintothe conceptofprojects,setsofimagesandbooks.
EventuallyIrealisedthatthemagazinewassteeredbysomeonecalledaneditor andhisnamewasBrooksJensen.Ifoundreadinghiseditorialsaninspiringand challengingread.TheflavourofthemagazinecamefromBrooks.
Iampleasedtohavebeenintroducedto LensWork andthencetoBrooks.Hehas contributedtomyexperienceandunderstandingofphotographyandforthatI amverygrateful.
