Editorial This month's newsletter marks the beginning of a busy few months for the Landscape Group. A number of events have already filled up, in particular the dawn shoot at Stonehenge and our filters workshop with Jeremy Walker. If you missed out on Stonehenge, you can book alternative dates directly with English Heritage. Details of our Autumn Conference and Annual General Meeting were announced a couple of weeks ago. Since then we have received an encouraging number of early bookings and confirmed a number of other speakers. For more details, see the Chairman's Chat and conference feature overleaf. Our other features this month are a report on January's coastal exploration to Rye and Hastings and Paul Stone's images of Petersfield Lake. The group's facebook page is proving popular, with almost 90 members signed up. It has been good to see some great images as well as supportive and constructive critique Finally, a reminder that submissions of images for the newsletter are always welcome! With kind regards Jim Souper Newsletter Editor

Chairman’s Chat Most of you will have received an email about our autumn conference and AGM to be held at The Coniston Hotel. Mark Reeves has done a fabulous job of putting together the programme - see opposite. It features Charlie Waite as the headline speaker for the first night and opportunities to understand the distinctions process and to have your portfolio reviewed. Also available are trips to local landmarks and the opportunity to meet other landscape photographers. We hope you will book and join us for what promises to be a memorable weekend. Remember, the early booking discount finishes on 1st May. As you will see from the website we have a strong programme of field trips and classroom sessions planned for the coming months. We are still looking for more volunteers to run a guided walks in their area. A frequently heard reason for not running an event is - “I am not a good enough photographer”. You do not need to be an A1 photographer, as the events are guided explorations, not workshops. What you need is knowledge of the locality and a willingness to share that knowledge. So, if you have a favourite spot please contact Mark at rps.landscape.events@gmail.com to set up an event. I hope you all enjoy the delights of spring and prioritise your time to get out and make some photographs. Best wishes Richard Richard Ellis Chairman RPS Landscape Group

Coastal Exploration Rye and Hastings by Richard Ellis After our last foray to the south coast was under cloudless skies we were hoping for a little more favourable weather for this trip and the weather gods delivered ‌‌. well at least a bit. There were definitely clouds in the sky but they were propelled along by a stiff wind, which made good camera technique very important. We started on a rising tide at the entrance to Rye harbour and soon had nice shots of the breakwaters, navigation markers and the old sea defences. Leaving before high tide, we headed to Wincheslea to photograph the old sea defences. These were built when it was believed that defences parallel to the waves were the best form of defence. They are now very gnarled and degraded and make excellent structures for long exposures. Our final stop was Hastings harbour with the sea wall and shingle beach. The weather had definitely read the forecast and bang on 16:00, it started to rain bringing our day to an end. Beach at Rye Harbour by Liz Akers

MY FAVOURITE PLACE Petersfield Lake by Paul Stone This is a series of images that I have taken, with the camera being stood in more or less the same place, at Petersfield Lake in Hampshire. The images have all been taken at different times of the year, over several years and at different times of the day. One is even taken in moonlight. It never ceases to fascinate me how the resulting photographs can be so different all according to when you show up to photograph them. We all have favourite places that we like to photograph, so take a look back through your images and see the results from different shoots at the same location. .
