02 | COVER IMAGE About the cover image PHOTOGRAPHER: Chris Renk IMAGE TITLE: The last rays of sunshine CAPTION: I took the photo of this maple tree on an October weekend in the Eng Valley, which is located in the Northern Karwendel Mountains. The Big Ahornboden and the Little Ahornboden are two scenically impressive alpine pastures with old mountain maple stands. Especially during the Indian summer, when the leaves of the maple trees turn yellow-red, you are offered an unforgettable natural spectacle. Of course, you have to wait for the exact time when the leaves bloom, which is not always easy. I have been trying for several years now, but I was lucky and particularly rewarded this year.

4TH QUARTER 2021 | 03

DEAR MEMBERS, WHAT AN EXCITING YEAR FOR THE CHAPTER! 2021 was an exciting year for the Chapter. We can look back on many public chapter activities despite the Corona crisis. So be it our joint exhibition with the theme “Proportion”, which we were finally able to hold after several postponements. In addition to the joint exhibition, the Chapter, in conjunction with the Hohenlimburg Grammar School, organised a photo competition for upper school students on the theme of “Floods in Hohenlimburg and its Surroundings”. Even though this competition involved a lot of time for the Chapter members, we had a lot of fun working with the art teachers and the students. Fortunately, the award ceremony could take place as an attendance event before the Corona measures were tightened again. Another milestone was the introduction of the quarterly publication of our eMagazine, which had only appeared sporadically over the past years. Again, I want to thank all contributors for this. This brings me to the contributions in this issue of our eMagazine. First, in the “Top Story” section, our Chapter Chairman, Siegfried Rubbert, who celebrated his 70th birthday this year, presents impressive works from his 53 years as a photographer in his exhibition 70/53.

We also took the opportunity to ask Siegfried about his photographic career in the “Members Interview” section. In the “Photoworks” section, the other chapter members demonstrated their impressive skills and photographic diversity. Martin Gerling impressively captured plays of light in the Contemporary Category, to name but a few. Or Grahame Soden, who observed the wildlife in the wintry north of Sweden. Eberhard Potempa captured reflections of his surroundings on a soap bubble for us, and Horst Witthueser once again went to lost places to portray incomparable compositions for us. In the “Location Guide” section, I went all out again for you and reported on my unforgettable trip to the Hawaiian archipelago. Of course, I hope that the content of the current issue will appeal to you and call on you to participate with your own contributions. True to the motto, “to be published - matters”. In this spirit, I wish us all good luck in the new year and hope that all your photo projects will be successful. Chris Renk, Chapter Organiser

WELCOME TO MY EXHIBITION 70/53 I don’t have a studio like a painter or a sculptor.

who set out in urban city spaces to look for Street Art objects.

Already in the publication published for the 90th anniversary of the Hagenring, I wrote: “My studio is outside.”

These searching photographers were called flâneurs by the author of the article.

Outside, encounters take place with places, people, objects, urban landscapes, abandoned and inhospitable places, industrial areas, gardens, parks, museums, cities, nature, streets, and interior spaces. There is always something to discover, so I set out with my camera. While researching my first solo exhibition, I read about photographers

HAGENRING Gallery - City of Hagen

08 / 4TH QUARTER 2021 / eMAGAZINE

The term flâner comes from the French and means roam and stroll around. And somehow, I found myself in this description. I stroll! I want to capture the photographic observations and encounters that arise in the process, and new ideas, pictorially fascinating sceneries or graphically varied recurring motifs keep emerging.

And sometimes, even a fairy tale happens. Like the photographic fairy tale of the acorn with the hat, which I noticed lying on the road during a walk I liked it! I picked it up like a shell hunter on the beach, took it with me on my walk, staged it and arranged it in different places. And because I didn’t have my camera at hand, I used my mobile phone. 70/53 - The title of this exhibition should mean no more or less than I turned 70 this year and have been taking photographs for 53 years.

An irrepressible will to design coupled with a certain manual skill has shaped me since my school days! My will to design can be seen, for example, in the socio-critical installation "Think". By the way, the only photo in this exhibition I had already shown in another collection. The installation is self-explanatory. (Protect our environment - Avoid plastic packaging)

Or up under the ceiling based on a photographic sculpture. The photography detaches itself from the documentary, creates space for itself and asks the question : Does the space determine the object, or does the sculpture make the space?

SERIE 249 km/h - On a Journey to Berlin and back.

Now we add acceleration from the subtitle of my exhibition I already had the idea for photography from a moving train in 2009, when I let the winter landscape pass me by on a trip to Berlin in February.

016 / 4TH QUARTER 2021 / eMAGAZINE

This year I took up this theme again, and so on a first train journey - again to Berlin - after the months-long lock down, I took an extensive series of other shots. Due to the conscious determination of a longer shutter speed, the train in motion and its acceleration up to 249 km/h brought forth partly abstract graphic, somewhat impressionistic looking motifs.

70/53 Movement - Entcounter - Acceleration

The photographic image blurs into a fleeting impression, a composition, a painting. Not consciously controlled photography, but an image of reality left to chance like a blurring in painting, the image generates an unexpected, unplanned result at the moment of release.

20 | MEMBERS INTERVIEW |

Question No. 1: How did you get into photography? In 1968, when I had just turned 17, my father explained the basics of photography to me, gave me a camera he used professionally and a light meter and let me wander through a big city for the first time (it was Munich) while he was attending a congress. Six years later, in 1974, on our first holiday together with my wife, my father gave me another camera for the trip. It was a Leica IIf thread camera from 1937. My wife watched me handling this old camera, recognised my enthusiasm for photography and encouraged me: “Why don’t you finally buy your own camera? She encouraged me to buy my own camera when one of my films broke, and I had to rewind the film under the covers to save the pictures. I started with Canon SLR cameras A1, EF, F1 and later ended up with Leica again. After that, my favourite cameras became an analogue Leica R 6.2 and today a Leica SL 2 with Vario-Elmarit 24 90 mm.

Question no. 2: Who are your photographic role models? I could name a large number of photographers as exemplary role models. I admire the photography of Andreas Gursky, Thomas Ruff or Thomas Struth from the Düsseldorf photo school of Bernd and Hilla Becher; Furthermore, Peter Lindbergh or the black-andwhite photography of Michael Kenna. I should not forget the street photography of CartierBresson or Saul Leiter.

Question no. 3: What do you like to photograph most? The range of subjects I enjoy is wide: Street Photography, Architecture, Still Life, Minimal Photography, Interior Photography, ICM Photography, Flower and Garden Photography, Street-Art Photography or the task of capturing a theme, as we have often chosen as a task in the Germany Chapter.

Question no. 4: Is there anything you don’t like to photograph at all? There is no such thing as not at all, but my inclination towards portrait and landscape photography is less pronounced.

eMAGAZINE / 4TH QUARTER 2021 / 023

24 | MEMBERS INTERVIEW |

Siegfried Rubbert LRPS

Question no. 5: How do you approach a shooting? Do you choose the location/subject in advance, or do you just drive blindly somewhere and start taking pictures? I rarely plan an exact location or object; instead, I often take a city, district, or industrial estate and wander around haphazardly, stroll through the town, and wait to see what exciting things I encounter. In the process, I almost always find exciting motifs worth capturing. Sometimes, series result from this, motifs merge, repeat or vary and thus form, initially spontaneously, then consciously sought out, a new range of themes.

Question no. 6: Are there a few dream places you would like to photograph? My dream places are the far north of Europe with snowy landscapes and the resulting detail shots, the northern lights (Aurora borealis), the Orkney and Shetland Islands, the Hebrides, Greenland. Although landscape photography is not exactly my forte, I know, but I am sure I will encounter other motifs there.

Siegfried Rubbert LRPS

Question no.7: How necessary is high-quality equipment for you? I am delighted with my camera, so yes, I think good equipment is essential, it allows me to concentrate fully on my subject.

Question no. 8: What 3 tips would you give to someone who is just getting interested in photography? 1. Go through the world with an open eye and an interest in moments and details, almost no matter where, be it close to home or far away, the opportunities arise by themselves, come to you, the motifs find you. 2. If you see a moment, a particular mood of light, an atmospheric moment, take the picture at that very moment; it cannot be postponed; you cannot repeat it at a later time. 3. Look for contact with like-minded people, discuss your photographs, exchange your thoughts.

STUDENTS PHOTOGRAPHING THE HAGEN FLOODS A joint project of the Hohenlimburg Grammar School and the Germany Chapter Royal Photographic Society under the RPS strategy “Photography for Everyone.”

Capturing these moments was the photo competition theme for the students of the EF level of the upper school of the Hohenlimburger Gymnasium, which was organised in

cooperation with the art teachers of the school and the Germany Chapter. The chapter’s main aim was to deal with the consequences of the flood

On 15.07.2021, the city of Hagen and the surrounding area were hit by the flood of the century. Flooded cellars, flooded streets, torrential streams carrying masses of debris and burying cars underneath them left the city in chaos. Even the emergency services had to surrender in some places. Those who see photos of the flood disaster in Hagen often see suffering, but also a lot of hope, solidarity and unconditional help. Chapter Jury - selecting the 10 best images of the competition

For this, the students could work as individuals or in groups of between two and four students. A total of 65 photographs were submitted. The ten best photos were selected by an expert jury consisting of Chairman Siegfried Rubbert, Chapter

Secretary Horst Witthueser, Cash Auditor Eberhard Potempa, Chapter Organiser Chris Renk and art teacher Lena Lumberg. Students from the other year groups (Q1 and Q2) could also apply to open the competition to more young people from the school. For each of the submitted pictures, the participants had to submit a “Statement of Intent”, in which they had to explain why they had chosen these particular motifs. The submitted images showed great diversity in approach. Pictures were presented in the form of before/after and during the flood documentation and documentation after the flood. One group even recreated a disaster picture. Despite the sad background of the photo competition, all participants visibly enjoyed the realisation of the topic. The award ceremony for the winning photos and the “shortlisted” photos (4th to 10th place) took place in the grammar school auditorium as a presentation event. Prizes included

In 2013, after years of stress-filled and work-related travel activities, I decided to take a more extended holiday trip to the Hawaiian Islands. In total, I spent four weeks in Hawaii, which turned out to be one of the best holidays I ever had. As a passionate landscape photographer, I was overwhelmed by the beauty and diversity of nature and the different landscapes. It allowed me to relax from my job and pursue my passion for photography in equal measure. In the following article, I will share my experiences with you, which I illustrate with numerous pictures. Since the Hawaiian archipelago consists of 8 large islands and my holiday trip was limited to 4 weeks, I concentrated on visiting 3 of the eight main islands and a somewhat more extended visit to the capital Honolulu. These Islands were Oahu, Maui, and Big Island.

OAHU The first stop on my Hawai’i trip was the island of Oahu, Oahu - the heart of Hawaii - is only the third largest island in the archipelago in terms of area, but the most populous. Oahu means "gathering place". Most of the islanders live in and around Honolulu, the capital of the 50th state of the USA. They are people of different origins and religions who have come together here in the course of history to form a multicultural community and who today make up the charm of the island. Honolulu is probably one of the fascinating metropolises in the USA. Where else do skyscrapers stand between tropical green mountain ranges and turquoise ocean. Where else are there two extinct volcanic craters in the middle of the city, and where else can you find such a dazzling ethnic diversity and such a famous beach as Waikiki right on your doorstep?

MAUI

The next stop on my trip was the island of Maui. Maui is Hawaii’s second-largest island and is considered a holiday paradise par excellence and is, therefore, more touristy than its neighbouring islands. But Maui has more to offer than just paradisiacal beaches: In winter, you can watch jumping humpback whales, look for sea turtles while snorkelling or get up at the crack of dawn to watch the spectacular sunrise over the Pacific on the summit of Haleakala. The Road to Hana is Maui’s most famous road, winding through jungle-like scenery and 54 single-lane bridges to Hana.

LAHAINA Once known as Lele, which means “relentless sun” in Hawaiian, Lahaina is a historic town that has been transformed into a Maui hotspot with dozens of art galleries and a variety of unique shops and restaurants. Once the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom in the early nineteenth century, Lahaina was also a historic whaling village during the whaling boom of the mid-1800s. Today, Lahaina is on the National Register of Historic Places. However, you can still get a feel for old Lahaina as you stroll down lively Front Street. Don’t forget to set sail from Lahaina Harbor on an unforgettable whale watching tour during the winter months. ROAD TO HANA The Road to Hana is Maui’s most famous road, winding through jungle-like scenery and 54 single-lane bridges to Hana. The winding road to Hana is breathtakingly beautiful and offers one highlight after another: beautiful beaches, trees with coloured trunks, waterfalls and Black Sand Beaches.

HALEAKALA NATIONAL PARK Haleakala Crater rises above the island of Maui and can be seen from everywhere. A force of nature in every sense of the word. This inactive volcano is 3,055 m above sea level and offers a breathtaking variety of landscapes and sky views. Haleakala means “house of the sun” in Hawaiian. According to legend, the demigod Maui caught the sun from the sky with a lasso while standing on the volcano’s summit, slowing down the sunset and making the day longer.

BIG ISLAND The last stop on my Hawaii trip was Big Island. If you want more than just beach and sea on a Hawaii trip, Big Island is the place to be. Big Island (actually Hawai’i) is the largest island in the Aloha State and more diverse than you might imagine. There are volcanic landscapes that seem out of this world, green rainforests and all-black or pearly white beaches. There are five major volcanoes on Big Island, some of which are extinct, dormant or active. Among them is Kilauea, one of the most active volcanoes in the world.

MAUNA KEA In the island’s heart lies the dormant volcano Mauna Kea (Hawaiian for White Mountain due to its crest of snow and ice) with an altitude of 4205 metres. The inactive fire mountain is the highest elevation on the Big Island and the entire Pacific. Moreover, it is even considered the highest mountain globally, measured from its actual foot on the ocean floor. But it is not the height that makes Mauna Kea attractive to tourists worldwide, but its unique location in the tropics, the unpolluted air, and the deep blackness on the summit because this mixture creates the best conditions for the clearest starry nights on the White Mountain. No wonder, then, that the world’s largest observatory and the most powerful telescope on earth are located here. You have a fantastic view over the entire island from the summit, and you can experience incredible sunrises and sunsets.

PU’UHONUA O HONAUNAU HISTORICAL PARK Located on the coast of Honaunau Bay in South Kona, the Puuhonua o Honaunau temple complex offers exciting insights into Hawaiian culture. The almost 73 ha National Historical Park was once royal property and served as a refuge for Hawaiian lawbreakers. Kapu (sacred laws) were once of utmost importance in Hawaiian culture. Violations of kapu were sometimes even punishable by death. Moreover, if you broke the kapu (sacred laws), you had to outrun your pursuers and make it to a puuhonua (sacred refuge). There, one was given absolution in a ceremony and could then return to society.

AKKA FALL The Akaka fall is a 135 m tall waterfall and is the highlight of the ʻAkaka falls state park. This park is located close to Hilo, and a visit to this waterfall should be part of any road trip crossing the Hamakua coast. You can only see the fall after a pleasant and short 0.4-mile hike from the parking lot. This walk is called the ʻAkaka Falls Loop Trail and is an easy hike for the whole family. The walk to the Akaka fall takes you through a lush rainforest filled with wild orchids, bamboo groves and draping ferns. Be prepared to meet other people on the trail because the Akaka fall is one of the more popular attractions on this side of the island.
