PHOTOGRAPHER: Siegfried Rubbert LRPS

IMAGE TITLE: Hobby or Hunger

CAPTION: During my evening walks in November, I noticed the increasing number of anglers setting up their rods for a catch on the beach of Norderney compared to previous years.

I asked myself the question : was it solely in pursuit of their passion or did the fishing serve to supplement a hot evening meal in today’s inflationary times.

Maybe it was both - I didn’t dare to ask.

DEAR MEMBERS,

An “Annus Horribilis ” is probably how Queen Elizabeth II would have reflected on the past year, had she not died this year.

A perceived increase in the number of despots, dictators or autocrats made the world more insecure, resulting in the Ukraine war.

We see rising inflation, “heat or eat”, energy shortages, costs becoming unpredictable, a very high number of flu cases with empty pharmacies, staff shortages in hospitals and Corona is not over yet.

Can we do anything to counter this ?

Yes, we can try to counter this horrible list with our wonderful hobby-horse, our passion - photography.

It is a highly important task of photography to capture and document the images of these catastrophes. On the other hand, photography also offers the possibility to deal with the beautiful sides of the world.

We can create wonderful landscape photographs, spend hours wringing spectacular shots out of life

in the animal world or photograph the artworks of flora.

We can create entire series, tell stories, encounter people and places, work artistically, photograph minimally, depict architecture or collect travel impressions. There are no limits to the variety of photography.

With this in mind, take your camera and capture your dreams, take the time to completely relax in the process, immerse yourself in another world, concentrate and focus on a new subject, get creative.

And in this way you can possibly and hopefully detach yourself a little from the first list above and let the world become a little better in its beauty and aesthetics.

This is what I wish you for the coming year, and so I am looking forward to your photos in 2023.

Your Siegfried Rubbert LRPS

But for now, “open your eyes” and enjoy the eMagazine of the 4th quarter of 2022 with a wonderful abundance and variety of contributions and articles.

READY FOR DEPARTURE “FLYING AND PHOTOGRAPHING”

As a small boy, Eberhard Potempa dreamed of flying small aircraft and discovering the world from a bird’s perspective. What started with building kites and later stunt kites should become his passion for life when he finally held his pilot licences. As a second-most passion, Eberhard picked photography and combining both resulted in capturing images of outstanding beauty. So discover what Eberhard tells us about his feelings while flying and photographing simultaneously.

Longing to fly

As a small boy, I was already making kites and later stunt kites. So the longing to be able to fly a small aircraft had been dormant in me for a very long time.

But I didn’t have the money to get a pilot’s licence. Moreover, after finishing my studies and starting my professional life, I didn’t have enough time, so although I still wanted to fly, it was a long way off.

Two of my friends were also interested in flying and acquired their pilot’s licence.

The conversations with both of them kept touching on the subject of flying, and my longing increased again from time to time.

And then the time came: I said to myself, “Now you are in your mid-forties - if not now when?” No sooner said than done.

I enrolled in the flying school of an air sports club near my home. Nine months later, I held my pilot’s licence in my hands and was overjoyed.

Passion for flying and photography

Even after the first few flights, I was thrilled by the view from the cockpit. The landscape below me changed its colours and shapes depending on the time of year and day. I was thrilled and took my camera with me on every flight to take pictures from the air. The first photos didn’t convince me, as the

scratched plastic windows of the cockpit, which were quickly covered with insect residue, led me to rework all the images very intensively. But more and more, the different landscape structures captivated me, and I developed an eye for particular/interesting ground formations.

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

I flew abroad with one of my two friends, who motivated me to fly. A few more flights followed this in the European area. Then, inspired by the books of the famous French writer and pilot Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, the idea of a flight from Toulouse to Casablanca developed.

This is a piece of the postal route that Saint-Exupéry flew and was a flying challenge for me. I took many photos of this flight, which took place in 2003, but unfortunately, they were not of convincing quality, which I regretted very much.

Community of destiny

In 2007, four pilot friends joined my air sports club, united by their enthusiasm for flying. Since then, the four of us have flown together yearly in two aircraft (Cessna 172) for 4-6 days in Europe (our first destination was Venice).

As an enthusiastic amateur photographer, I was “qualified” to document these European flights photographically. I have enjoyed doing this for the past 16 years and have learned a lot.

Flying these joint flights has made me strong, meaning “with good flight planning, we can get anywhere”.

The four of us have always described ourselves as a community of destiny, each dependent on the other.

This has also been shown in reaching our destinations in Scandinavia, Finland, the Baltic States, Poland, Austria, Switzerland, Slovenia, Croatia, Greece, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Spain and Portugal.

And we also flew to Casablanca again at my request. I took thousands of photos during this time. Most of them - together with a travelogue - was immortalised in a photo book.

Ready for departure

Taking photos from the cockpit is - as already mentioned - not so easy because of the plastic window. In addition, the movements of the aircraft make photography difficult or even impossible, depending on wind conditions and gusts of wind.

Due to the difficulties described above, many of the photos shown here are not technically perfect, but they are essential mementoes of almost 25 years of “flying and photographing”.

4th quarter 2022

Every quarter, Members are asked to send in their best photos of the current quarter to provide stimulation for the others.

In the fourth quarter of 2022, our members were particularly creative and produced awe-inspiring masterpieces of photography.

In addition to the common areas of photography, such as landscape and street photography, light painting and Intentional Camera Movement (ICM) were also addressed.

Chris Renk was on a short holiday in the east of Germany and captured the autumn atmosphere.

Horst Witthueser pursued his passion for street photography and captured curious compositions of objects in his close neighourhood

Martin Gerling once again entered the realm of light painting and captured its colourful facets.

Siegfried Rubbert, who already spoke about his passion for Intentional Camera Movements in the last issue of our eMagazine, once again presents his skills in this field of photography.

Photography, as a powerful medium of expression and communications, offers an infinite variety of perception, interpretation and execution.

LA BIENNALE DI VENEZIA

The fantastic international art show in Venice usually takes place every two years. After the exhibition in 2021 was cancelled due to Corona, the entire art public was pleased that the 59th Biennale opened its doors again from 23 April to 21 November 2022.

Our member, Siegfried Rubbert, visited this year’s Biennale for us and reports about it.

My wife and I have been visiting the Biennale since 2003, so this year’s exhibition in Venice was our 10th in a row and a fixed date in our travel plans.

And let me say in advance that there is never enough time for this city, which is far too crowded but virtually inexhaustible in motifs.

And like this place, the Biennale offers an incredible reservoir of photographic motifs, not only the exhibition venues with their buildings but also the artworks, installations and videos shown there.

With very few exceptions, which can be counted on one hand, all works of art may be photographed. But in today’s times (mobile phone photography), with so many visitors, I don’t think it could be prevented.

Siegfried Rubbert LRPS Giardini - Central Pavilion

The Biennale di Venezia is divided into two large exhibition areas: firstly, the Giardini, a park landscape in the Castello district of the historic city, where various countries have erected their exhibition buildings.

The first national Pavilion opened in 1907 with Belgium, followed by Hungary, Germany, and Great Britain in 1909, France in 1912, Russia in 1914 and so on. The first Esposizione Internazionale d’Arte Della Città di Venezia opened on 18 April 1895.

No biennials were held from 1916 to 1918 because of the First World War, after a six-year hiatus because of the Second World War, the International Art Exhibition returned in 1948 with a significant exhibition and by the way, the Russian Pavilion remained closed in 2022. Why do you think?

The request of nations who also wanted to exhibit in Venice increased steadily. So in 1999, with the 48th International Art Exhibition, Venice opened a second large exhibition area, the historic halls of the Arsenale. After the Italian Pavilion had already moved its permanent seat to the Arsenale in 2006, more and more countries and institutions rented their pavilions in the Arsenale from 2007 onwards.

The Arsenale is also located in the Sestiere Castello and originally consisted of a few buildings that served as workshops and storage rooms and a more extensive water basin in which the ships built here could be launched.

Later, the area became larger and larger, and a shipyard and the naval base of the Republic of Venice developed.

The area of the former Arsenale is about 48 hectares; one-third of the site is still used by the Italian Navy today, and two-thirds of the state property was donated to the city of Venice in 2013.

However, this still does not satisfy the desire for exhibition possibilities. So further exhibitions, the so-called Collaterali, are held in various buildings, palaces and museum spaces in Venice, rented by the exhibitors or countries.

In this article, I will deliberately limit myself to the artworks or installations exhibited in 2022 and leave out the city of Venice and the buildings of Giardini and Arsenale.

THE SEVEN SECRETS

Discover what Anthony Cutler tells us about the secrets of boundary stones and their history.

What belongs to you and what is mine? This question, particularly when related to land boundaries, has resulted in many disputes and conflicts.

As an answer to this question, landowners and the church set up a system in the 12/13 century whereby the land boundaries were defined by boundary stones. This system has been continued until now in two german counties, namely Bayern und Rheinland Pfalz.

Although modern measurement techniques have made this activity unnecessary, the mayor of each town continues to elect up too seven people to carry out the marking of plots of land and fields.

They are responsible for setting border stones higher or lower, the removal or replacement of survey markings, mediating in boundary disputes and marking within the parish area.

Always working together with the survey authorities. The position of „Feldgeschworener“, roughly translated (Field juror), is one of the oldest still existing positions in the communal administration.

There are more than 25,000 people in Bayern carrying out these duties.

„The Seven Secrets“ is a special arrangement of, for example, clay, glass, porcelain or metal around the border stone. Exactly how the positioning has to be is known only by the elected people. They are bound to keep this a secret.

The idea is, should the secret items be displaced or removed then there is something wrong with the location of the boundary stone.

Once a year on the 3rd October there is a „boundary inspection“ with the seven elected people together with a crowd of spectators.

MPB & GERMANY CHAPTER

As a chapter of the Royal Photographic Society, we operate largely independently and without financial support from the Society.

This means that all ventures within the chapter, as well as outside such as joint ventures with schools and other organisations, have to be funded by ourselves.

This can be very costly, considering the price of a gallery for the chapter’s exhibitions or running competitions with prizes for schools and other youth organisations.

Therefore, we were all the more delighted when MPB, the leading platform for used camera and video equipment, contacted us to ask how they could support our efforts here in Germany.

MPB was founded in 2011, and has always been committed to making kit more accessible and affordable, helping to visualize a more sustainable future. They recirculate more than 400,000 items of used kit every year, extending the life and creative potential of photo and video equipment for creators around the world.

A Cooperation in order to promote the RPS’s strategy “Photography for Everyone” in Germany
076 / 4th QUARTER 2022 / eMAGAZINE

Headquartered in the creative communities of Brighton, Brooklyn and Berlin, the MPB team includes trained camera experts and seasoned photographers and videographers who bring their passion to work every day to deliver outstanding service.

Every piece of kit is inspected carefully by their product specialists and comes with a warranty to give customers peace of mind that buying used doesn’t mean sacrificing reliability

As sponsorship is new territory for us as a Chapter, we first had to clarify some basic questions regarding the taxation of sponsorship money as well as contributions in kind for association in Germany.

After these questions were clarified in consultation with MPB, the chapter committee started brainstorming for possible undertakings with MPB for the coming year 2023.

A variety of possibilities for MPB support were gathered, but these were narrowed down to the following areas for now:

A variety of possibilities for MPB support were gathered, but these were narrowed down to the following areas for now:

• Carrying out photo competitions in the context of art lessons at schools

• Conducting online talks, which are also open to non-members of the RPS.

• Conducting photo workshops

• Organising photo competitions within the chapter as well as with the participation of non-RPS members

• Organising exhibitions

MPB actively supports us by providing photo equipment for the workshops, prizes for the photo competitions, financial means for the organisation of exhibitions, online talks and photo workshops.

Furthermore, MPB participates in the production of the Chapter’s eMagazin by providing articles on photo hardware and photography know-how.

As you can see, the cooperation with MPB significantly enhances the German Chapter’s ability to actively support the Royal Photography Society in achieving its strategic goals and thus promote the knowledge of photography to the public.

Of course, we hope that the additional offer will be taken up by our members in large numbers.

With this in mind, we look forward to a fruitful collaboration with MPB in 2023

DEADLINES ENTRIES RPS JOURNAL

After the RPS Journal is published by an external company, the rules for contributions and the recording of events are more restrictive.

As an indication, a lead time of 2 months can be assumed for the inclusion of articles in the journal.

Events of the German Chapter are automatically included in the journal if they are published on the Chapter website under the heading Event.

Here the lead time is about one month before the publication of the journal.

Please note this when planning events and articles.

DEADLINES ENTRIES e MAGAZINE

Since the magazine is published by the chapter itself, we are very flexible concerning the time schedule for submission of texts, pictures and dates for events.

In order not to make the editor’s life too complicated, we ask for a sufficient amount of time in advance.

As a rule, contributions should be received by the editor about 30 days before the publication date

Otherwise, simply inform us that you need some additional time for the creation of a contribution.
