HerloveofdogsgotHolly firstinvolvedinphotography anditisherpursuitofa betterandbetterimageof themthathasdrivenher. Afterjoiningherlocalcamera clubandbeingencouraged totryforanLRPS,Hollyhas nowachievedbothARPS andFRPS.Sheiswell knownforherimagesofthe dogs,butalsolovesmany aspectsofphotography, particularlylandscapesand seascapes.
Hollyisanactivememberof theRPSDigitalImaging group,compilingtheDI Accolademagazinewith DennisKnowles,andisalso theCoordinatoroftheDI Processinge-circle.
Despitepromisingherself thatshewilldiversify,itis invariablydogsthatfillher memorycards!
PAULGRABERARPS
Paulhashadaninterestin photographysincetheearly 1980s,butthiswaxedand wanedoverseveraldecades beforehejoinedGuildford PhotographicSocietyin 2006.Sincethenhehasat timesbeenChairman, ProgrammeSecretaryand CompetitionSecretaryatthe club,aswellasrunning severalSpecialInterest Groups.
HeachievedhisLRPSin 2012,andhardlyrushed beforegettinghisARPSwith apanelofautumnwoodland landscapes(mostdefinitely incolour!)in2021.He becameajudgeinSurrey PhotographicAssociationin 2016andhasrecentlybeen promotedtoits‘A’List.

Photographyhascaptivated Eddiesincehewasasmall boywithaKodakBrownie 127.Hedoesn’tclaimto haveanyimagesfromthat periodofanyworthbutby thetimehewasatUniversity studyingChemistrytheskills heacquiredworkedwellin thedarkroomandhedoes haveoneor2imagesfrom thistimethathestillenjoys.
Hehasexploredawide varietyofgenresandstyles overtheyears.However,he alwaysreturnstothe landscapeandneverfeels morealivethanwhenheis outdoors,“anticipatingthe momentwhenthemagic mighthappen:thelight, weatherandlandscape combinetocreateartinfront ofone’seyesandyouare theretocaptureit.“.

Ourfirstthoughtsforthisyearwerethatwe wouldbeabletorunthecompetitionfrom thetheatreatRPSHQ,Paintworks,Bristol butanumberoffactorsconspiredagainstus, sothedecisionwastakenbythecommittee toruniton-lineagain.Havingdonethis threetimesalready,oursystemshadbecome well-polishedandbearinginmindthe variousbenefitsofminimalcost;our selectorsandcompetitionsecretary(me) beingcomfortableathomeandthereforeno travelling,etc.,anyargumenttooperate otherwisewasdifficulttocounter.
Ourthreeselectors:HollyStranksFRPS,EddieHydeFRPSandPaulGraber ARPShadbeenbriefedafewdaysearlierontheoperationofthesystem,so wegotofftoaflyingstartat10:00usingourusual‘Zoom’webinarmethod withselectorsmovingoutofthatsessiontoaprivateZoom-roomsoasto discusstheacceptancelevels,ribbonandmedalwinners.Theeventwaswell subscribedwithatotalof1,517imagesfrom280members,comprising717 Colour,562Monoand238Alteredreality.
Progresswasbrisk:theaveragetimeforviewingeachimagewasaround6 seconds,whichsomepeoplemightargueistooshortaperiodtogetafull andgoodimpressionofapicture.However,ourselectorsarevery experiencedinpickingoutworthyworkatthisspeedand-ofcourse-they gottolookatthebest(=higherscores)ofeachclassatlengthintheprivate roomsoastoarriveattheirtopchoices.Followingthis,theyreturnedtothe webinartodeclaretheirawards.At16:00weallbreathedasighofreliefdue tothefactthatthedayhadgonewithouttechnicaldifficulties!

“ThisphotowastakenonadaytourofVesteralan,anislandgroupneartheLofoten HighlandsinarcticNorway.InMarch,whenweweresailinguptheNorwegiancoast, thesnowwasverydeep.Thisledtomelookingforandtakingmoresimplified compositions.Theclumpoftreesonthehillsideimmediatelygrabbedmyattention. Thetreessittingonthetopofacurvedslopewithasmallhutinthemiddlewasjust cryingouttobephotographed.Thesunwasshiningandtheshadowsaddedtothe depthoftheimage.Shotincolourthephotolookedlovelywiththehuthavingared doorandgreenroofbutIwasnothappywiththebrightbluesky,soIdecidedtoconvert ittomonochrome.EditedinLightroomtogetbothblacksandwhitesasIwantedthem, ImadealittleadjustmenttobrightentheskyasIwantedtokeeptheimagehighkey.”

“ItookthispictureatBodnantGarden,Conwy,NorthWalesonabeautifuleveninginJuly. Therewasverylittlewind,perfectforbothflowerandinsectphotography.Therewerestilllots ofbeesandacoupleofbutterfliesfeedingofftheflowersinthe“RoundBed”Iwasattracted tothissmallcopperbutterflyontheEryngiumflowers.Itposedperfectlyforafewseconds beforeflyingoff.Ilikedthecombinationoftheblueoftheeryngiumagainsttheorangeofthe butterfly.Atthesametime,Itookanout-of-focuspicturewhichIoverexposedbyonestop fromthepreviousframe.Thecolourbalanceofbothimageswasadjustedandthenthetwo frameswereblended.Finally,Ienhancedthebutterflybyasmallamount.”

“Icouldn’tbelievemyluckwhenIsawtheegretsoclosetothecrocodile.Iwasonthe ChobeRiversearchingforbaskingcrocodileswhenIsawtheegret.Myfirstfewshots lookedasthoughtheegretwasstandingonsomething,butoncloserinspectionitwasa crocodile.InfactIdidcapturetheegretstandingjustbehindthecrocodilebutunfortunately thecrocodilewasn’tfullyintheframe.ForthisveryluckyshotIdidenhancethecolourof thecrocodilealittlesoastomakeitstandoutbecauseitwasratherindistinct.”

“ThephotographwastakenfromahideinameadowinBuckinghamshire.Alowviewpointis oftendesirableforwildlifephotographsbutisnotalwaysachievablefromahide.Fortunately, thisonewaspositioneddownaslightslope,which-lookingupward-helped.Towardsthe endoftheeveningthisfoxwalkedintoviewandafterspendingafewminutesinthe meadow,itturneddirectlytowardsthehideresultinginanidealposeforaportraitshotofthe animalsubmergedinitssurroundings.
Post-processingwasminimal:InLightroomImadetonaladjustments,removedsome distractinggrassseedheadsusingPhotoshopandsharpeneditalittle.Iparticularlyenjoy howthesubjectstandsoutinthewideareaofconsistenttextureandtone.Ashallowdepthof fieldalsohelpstoachievethat.”

“ForafewyearsIwasanofficialphotographerforWeymouthBeachMotocrosswhichgave metracksideaccesswhichpublicspectatorsdidnothave.Thisisanexcitingevent,taking placeonaSundayinOctober.Weatherisabigfactor–thewindspeedanddirectionare alwaysaconcernduetotheriskofgettingsandinthecamera.Itisanunpredictableevent duetothespeedofthemotorbikesandtheissuesarisingfromracingonsand–trackside photographersneedeyeseverywhereandneedtobeabletomovefastintheeventofabike veeringoffcourse!‘IntheClear’isprettymuchastaken.Ithashadsomeclutterremoved andthedistractingbackgroundtakendownalittlebuttheappealoftheshotwastheriderin red,clearoftheothercompetitors,sandsprayingoutandeyesclearlyvisible.”

“MyimageoftheAfricanpenguinsatBouldersBeachwastakenonarecenttriptoCape Town.Theyweresoamusingtowatchitwashardnottotaketoomanyimagesoftheirantics! Althoughthemiddleofthedaydidn’tofferidealshootingconditions,itwasgreatforenhancing theshadows.
Managingtoisolatethreepenguinswhichlinedupperfectlywasabonus.Iparticularlyliked thattherighthandonelookedasifhewasliftinguphisfootsoastoavoidtheshadow,whilst usinghisflipperstobalance.Itmademesmile.“

“Ihavebeeninterestedinphotographingarchitectureforsometime,usuallyconcentratingon creatingabstractsofpartsofthestructureratherthantakingthewholebuilding.Thisimage wascreatedfromseveralshotstakenatLondonMetropolitanUniversity.Theexterioris interestingasithasmetalcladdinginhexagonalshapessubdividedintotriangles.Ifyoulook closelyyoucanseetherivetsthatareholdingthepanelstogether.Thewindowsarenot squareandthereisaverysharplyangledroofline.Alloftheseaspectssuggestedlinesand anglesbutonepictureonitsownwasnotenoughtomakeastrikingimage.Therefore,Iused severallayersand‘difference’blendingmodetooverlayaspectsofthebuilding.Ialsofound thatthecolourchangescausedbytheblendingmodeimprovedtheimage.Ireallylikethe waythattheprojectingpartsofthewindowframesgiveitathreedimensionaleffectasit appearsthattheyarejuttingoutovereachother.“

“Thiswastakenatalocalwildlifepark.Myaimwastocaptureanimagetoprocessasa creativeanimalportrait.Fortunately,theLynxseemedcuriousaboutvisitorsandstayedstill longenoughformetogetsomeshots.IchosethisimagebecauseIlikedtheangleofthe head,hisintensestareandhowthefocusdroppedaway,whichIfeltsuitedamoreartistic processing.
IusePhotoshopElementswiththeXXLplug-in.Istartedbymakingasolidwhitelayer beneaththeimage,desaturatingthewholeimagethenmaskingbackthecolourinthelynx.I noticedagreentintremainedonhischinfurfromthegrasshewassittingon,soremoved that.IthenusedatinyamountoftheSubtleGlowfilterinTopazSimplifytobringouttexture inthefur.Finally,Iaddedatexturelayerofbeachsand,selectivelyremovingitfromthe centreoftheface.”
