A

lthough  students  may  not  be  strangers  to  pulling  all-­nighters  at  the  library,  how  many  of  those  students  would  willingly  stand  outside  for  24  hours?  Starting  at  midnight  on  April  9,  students  across  UW-­Whitewater  stood  outside  the  University  Center  for  24  hours  to  raise  awareness  of  modern-­day  slavery.  This  event  is  known  as  Stand  4  Freedom,  and  its  slogan  is  “One  day  for  their  every  day.â€?  It  is  an  annual  event  headed  by  the  International  Justice  Mission  (IJM)  that  aims  to  raise  awareness  of  the  oppression  and  violence  WKDW KDSSHQV HYHU\ GD\ DFURVV WKH JOREH WKURXJK KXPDQ WUDIÂż FNLQJ “It’s  one  thing  to  share  something  on  social  media,  but  it’s  another  thing  to  stand  for  seven  hours  straight  through  the  cold  night,â€?  said  Cassie  Steiner,  president  and  co-­founder  of  The  Freedom  Force  who  stood  for  a  total  of  14  hours.   “I  think  that’s  something  that  leaves  a  lasting  impression.â€?  The  Freedom  Force,  a  chapter  of  IJM  and  a  student  organization  dedicat-­ HG WR Âż JKWLQJ PRGHUQ GD\ VODYHU\ LQYLWHG VWXGHQWV DFURVV FDPSXV WR VWDQG IRU IUHHGRP KROG VLJQV DQG VLJQ D SHWLWLRQ WR KHOS PDNH WKH Âż JKW DJDLQVW slavery  a  priority  of  the  government. “It’s  really  visual,â€?  Steiner  said.  “You  see  the  chalk,  you  see  the  signs  and  you  see  people  standing,  and  probably  standing  for  some  reason.  It’s  an  interesting  way  to  raise  awareness  and  it’s  different.â€?

UW-­Whitewater  was  listed  on  stand-­for-­freedom.com  as  one  of  the  top  10  schools  participating  in  the  country  with  31  students  standing  for  the  cause.  That  number  kept  growing  throughout  the  day  as  students  registered  to Â

Furry  friends  promote  library  resources Andersen  Library  hosts  Stuffed  Animal  Sleepover Â

In  an  effort  to  make  children  more  independent,  Andersen  Library  held  its  second  annual  “Stuffed  Animal  Sleepover,â€?  an  event  that  allows  children  to  bring  stuffed  animals  to  the  li-­ brary  where  the  critters  spend  the  night  enjoying  activities  with  the  other  animals.  All  night  long,  the  stuffed  pets  do  activities  like  sing,  dance,  read  and  watch  movies  together,  all  while  the  library  assistants  take  pictures  of  these  activities  to  show  the  children  when  they  re-­ turn  the  next  day  to  pick  them  up.  Diana  Shull,  reference  and  in-­ structional  tech-­ nology  librarian  at  Andersen  Li-­ brary  and  coor-­ dinator  of  this  event,  believes  Shull it  is  growing  in  popularity  and  for  good  reason. “A  lot  of  public  libraries  do  this,  and  it  is  just  a  great  way  to  expose  kids  to  what  the  library  has  to  offer  in  a  fun,  cute  way  that  gets  them  engaged,â€?  Shull  said.   Â

Amid  the  sounds  of  children  laughing  and  “The  Pizza  Song�  being  sung  by  volunteers,  the  stuffed  animals  get  ready  to  part  ways  with  their  owners.  The  children  are  told  to  bring  their  “second  string�  stuffed  ani-­ mals.   This  prevents  them  from  not  being  able  to  fall  asleep  that  night  when  it  becomes  all  too  real  that  they  may  have  to  go  to  bed  alone.  “Last  year  we  only  had  one  child  who  decided  that  they  weren’t  comfortable  leaving  their  animal  behind,�  Shull  said.

This  year  the  library  staff  also  decided  it  would  be  helpful  if  they  could  have  student  vol-­ unteers  from  the  education  pro-­ gram.   Students  who  were  interested  in  working  with  children  were  asked  to  volunteer.   “I  think  [this  event]  shows  children  how  fun  reading  can  be  and  gives  them  an  opportunity  to  come  explore  the  library,â€?  said  senior  Rebecca  McHugh,  who  is  enrolled  in  the  early  childhood  program  and  works  in  the  chil-­ dren  center  on  campus.   The  children  have  a  chance  to  be  independent  without  los-­ ing  the  security  blanket  of  their  favorite  stuffed  animal.  The  children  play  the  role  of  parent,  getting  to  comfort  their  stuffed  animals  and  read  them  bedtime  stories. Each  child  brings  his  or  her  favorite  book  and  reads  to  them  before  they  send  them  off  to  nap  time.  It  is  at  this  time  that  the  stuffed  animals  rest  up  for  their  big  events  to  come  later  that  night.  Then  the  children  say  their  ¿ QDO JRRGE\HV $ IHZ WHDUV DUH shed  and  they  leave.  For  many  children  this  is  the  second  time  they  sent  their  favorite  animal  for  a  night  out.

vis  said  she  has  brought  her  two  children  to  the  Andersen  Library  for  the  past  two  years.   She  said  both  years,  her  children  have  had  a  positive  experience.   “We  love  this;Íž  it  is  our  second  year  doing  it,  and  it  is  just  awe-­ some  because  it  integrates  read-­ ing  and  there  is  great  fun,  and  they  get  to  explore  the  library  and  their  songs  and  it  is  a  really  great  wholesome  event.â€?  The  kids  either  will  come  back  the  next  day  or  on  Monday  to  pick  up  their  furry  friends  and Â

New org, early success Enactus  brings  project  to  national  competition

Mitchell  Fiene  reminded   judges  how  much  we  need  farm-­ ers. “Once  in  your  lifetime  you  PD\ QHHG D SROLFH RIÂż FHU RU D Âż UH man,â€?  Fiene  said.   “Once  a  year  you  may  need  a  doctor,  but  every  day,  three  times  a  day  you  may  need  a  farmer.â€?   This  quote  was  how  Fiene  and  three  other  members  of  Enactus  concluded  their  presentation  on  Scouting  Forward  at  the  Enactus  National  Exposition  2014  in  Cin-­ cinnati,  Ohio.   Scouting  Forward  was  the  UW-­Whitewater  Enactus  chap-­ ter’s  main  project  for  the  past  year.   Enactus  can  be  described  as  an  umbrella  or-­ ganization,  En-­ actus  Vice  Presi-­ dent  Dan  Fink  said.  Fiene E n a c t u s  helps  other  organizations  on  cam-­ puses  with  projects  they  already  DUH ZRUNLQJ RQ DQG Âż QGV WKH project  a  funding  source.   ,W PXVW Âż W WKUHH YDULDEOHV WR qualify:   environmentally  friend-­

Fiene  said  the  main  idea  be-­ hind  this  years  project  was  to  work  with  local  farms  to  boost  the  local  economy.   The  exposition  is  an  opportu-­ nity  for  more  than  400  Enactus  chapters  from  universities  across  the  United  States  to  compete.  The  majority  of  the  schools  attend  the  event  for  a  chance  to  qualify  for  the  U.S.  Enactus  team.   The  college  team  who  wins  the  competition   will  represent  the  United  States  for  the  2014  World  Cup  held  in  Beijing,  China.   The  event  also  included  a  ca-­ reer  fair  with  more  than  50  com-­ panies,  20  of  them  being  fortune  100  companies  including  Target,  Walgreens,  Coco-­Cola,  Pepsi-­Co  and  Home  Depot.   Fink  said  it  was  one  of  the  best  career  fairs  he  has  ever  at-­ tended.   He  said  there  was  an  incred-­ ible  opporuni-­ ty  for  all  the  UW-­W  students  Fink and  other  under-­ graduates  seeking  internships  or  jobs.  The  UW-­W  Enactus  Chapter,  despite  only  being  founded  two  \HDUV DJR PDGH LW WR WKH TXDUWHUÂż nals  of  competition.  Â

UW-­Whitewater  has  been  one  of  the  only  four-­year  universties  in  the  UW  system  without  a  model  U.N.  program.  Beginning  fall  2014  that  will  change.

The  new  class  was  the  idea  of  the  political  science  department  and  Anne  Hamilton,  former  U.N.  worker  as  well  as  current  UW-­Whitewater  professor.

Hamilton  worked  as  an  interna-­ tional  civil  servant  for  the  U.N.  di-­ rectly  out  of  college.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;We  are  very  excited  about  the  number  of  opportunities  it  will  give  students,  not  only  with  communica-­ tion  skills  but  with  negotiation  skills  and  leadership  skills,â&#x20AC;?  Hamilton  said.

During  the  semester,  students  will  work  on  issues  assigned  to  them  by  a  special  committee.  The  students Â

will  then  attend  conferences  to  com-­ pete.

They  will  be  judged  on  their  knowledge  of  the  country  and  issue  along  with  the  knowledge  of  how  the  U.N.  operates.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;The  cool  thing  about  it  is  that  every  semester  the  issues  change,â&#x20AC;?  Hamilton  said.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  possible  for  a  student  to  participate  in  this  class  over  a  period  of  time  while  still  learning  more  and  more.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;There  are  so  many  terrible  things  going  on  in  the  world  that  we  just  donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  focus  on,â&#x20AC;?  Hamilton  said.   â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  a  good  place  for  students  to  learn  about  the  world.â&#x20AC;?

Shirin  Bouzari,  international  studies  major,  said  she  dreams  to  work  at  the  U.N.  someday. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We  live  in  a  world  where  every-­ one  is  connected  through  the  Inter-­ net  and  social  media,â&#x20AC;?  Bouzari  said.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;So  I  think  we  need  to  know  what  is  happening  in  the  world.â&#x20AC;?

UW-­Whitewater  will  par-­ ticipate  in  the  Campus  Conser-­ vation  Nationals  (CCN)  from  April  11  to   25.  The  competition  is  the  larg-­ est  nationwide  electricity  and  water  reduction  competition  on  college  and  university  cam-­ puses.

Students  can  participate  by  reducing  the  amount  of  water  and  electricity  they  use  in  the  resident  halls.  This  can  be  ac-­ complished  by  unplugging  de-­ vices  and  turning  off  lights.

UW-­Whitewater  organization  CEO  organized  the  seventh  Annu-­ al  Warhawk  Business  Plan  Com-­ petition  on  April  9  at  the  Universi-­ ty  Center.  The  competition  aimed  to  give  students  a  platform  to  pres-­ ent  their  startup  ideas  in  front  of  experienced  business  individuals.

CEO  has  been  organizing  this  competition  for  the  past  seven  years  as  a  means  to  promote  stu-­ dent  entrepreneurs.  It  encourages  students  to  present  their  business  ideas.  The  competition  was  orga-­ nized  in  a  similar  manner  as  Shark  Tank,  the  television  show  on  ABC.  Students  presented  their  pitches  to  a  panel  of  judges.  Each  individual  pitch  was  followed  by  a  question  and  answer  session  from  the  judges.  7KH Âż QDOLVWV RI WKH FRPSHWL tion  included  Travis  Garski,   Alec Â

Before  Jonas  Salk  introduced  his  polio  vaccine  in  1955,  more  than  35,000  children  contracted  the  polio  virus  in  the  United  States  annually.  Yet  by  1957,  only  2,500  children  were  diagnosed  with  the  disease,  according  to  the  United  States  Centers  for  Disease  Control.

Since  1965,  only  61  cases  of  paralytic  po-­ lio  have  been  reported  in  the  United  States.

Although  these  numbers  are  staggering,  an  anti-­vaccination  sentiment  is  growing  in  the  United  States.  This  movement  is  danger-­ ous  for  kids  or  anyone  who  comes  into  con-­ tact  with  kids,  and  it  is  built  on  a  foundation  of  facts  that  have  been  disproven.

Groups  of  people  have  opposed  vaccines  as  far  back  in  history  as  1802,  when  the  cow-­ pox  vaccine  was  a  source  of  anxiety  for  some.  When  it  was  published  that  introducing  small  amounts  of  the  disease  to  a  personâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  system  could  immunize  them,  a  political  cartoon  cir-­ culated  displaying  people  turning  into  cows  and  chickens  shortly  after  being  vaccinated.

The  modern  argument  against  vaccines  was  spurred  by  a  study  published  in  â&#x20AC;&#x153;The  Lan-­ FHW´ E\ $QGUHZ :DNHÂż HOG LQ 7KH VWXG\ claimed  the  Measles,  Mumps  and  Rubella  vaccine  could  easily  cause  autism  in  children. ,Q WKH Âż QGLQJV RI WKH VWXG\ ZHUH IRXQG WR EH IDOVLÂż HG DQG Âł7KH /DQFHW´ UH WUDFWHG WKH DUWLFOH :DNHÂż HOG DOVR ZDV EDQQHG from  practicing  medicine  in  the  UK,  accord-­ ing  to  sciencebasedmedicine.org.

By  2010,  however,  the  anti-­vaccine  move-­ ment  was  in  full  swing,  and  the  damage  had  already  been  done.

That  damage  includes  29  people  with  Mumps  in  California  in  2012  and  a  175-­per-­ son  outbreak  of  Measles  in  Kansas  in  2013.  More  locally,  there  have  been  four  whooping  cough  outbreaks  in  Wisconsin  between  2011  and  2013,  affecting  nearly  8,000  people,  ac-­ cording  to  a  map  on  the  Council  of  Foreign  Relations  website.

These  diseases,  which  are  wholly  prevent-­ able  by  vaccine,  are  extremely  dangerous  and  not  to  be  taken  lightly.  Before  a  vaccine  was  implemented  in Â

1980,  Measles  killed  2.6  million  people  annu-­ ally  worldwide,  according  to  the  CDC. The  fatality  rate  for  whooping  cough  for  children  under  three  years  old  is  nearly  1.5  percent,  according  to  the  California  Depart-­ ment  of  Public  Health.

These  diseases  are  highly  contagious,  so  it  is  dangerous  for  children  to  be  around  them,  especially  when  they  are  not  vaccinated.  Un-­ fortunately,  even  people  who  are  vaccinated  have  a  chance  to  contract  these  illnesses,  ac-­ cording  to  the  CDC.  Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  common  for  UW-­Whitewater  students  to  go  home  on  the  weekends,  where  they  may  be  around  younger  brothers  or  sisters.  Profes-­

sors  and  employees  at  the  university  may  be  going  home  to  young  children  as  well,  so  it  is  vital  that  these  children  are  vaccinated,  or  they  could  contribute  to  a  spread  of  these  diseases  throughout  campus,  which  could  easily  be  fa-­ tal  to  some  students.

Although  the  arguments  against  vaccines  have  commonly  been  disproven  through  sci-­ HQWLÂż F IDFW WKHUH DUH VWLOO SHRSOH ZKR SXEOL cally  endorse  anti-­vaccine  agendas.  The  most  famous  of  these  has  been  Jenny  McCarthy,  a  host  on  ABCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  â&#x20AC;&#x153;The  View.â&#x20AC;?

Most  recently,  Kristin  Cavalleri,  former  member  of  the  shows  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Laguna  Beachâ&#x20AC;?  and  â&#x20AC;&#x153;The  Hillsâ&#x20AC;?  and  wife  of  Chicago  Bears  quar-­ terback  Jay  Cutler,  has  come  out  against  vac-­ cination.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;There  are  very  scary  statistics  out  there  regarding  what  is  in  vaccines  and  what  they  cause:  asthma,  allergies,  ear  infections,  all  kinds  of  things.  And  we  feel  like  weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re  mak-­ ing  the  best  decision  for  our  kids,â&#x20AC;?  Cavallari  said  in  an  interview  with  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Watch  What  Hap-­ pens  Liveâ&#x20AC;?  in  March.

What  is  scarier  than  those  statistics,  many  of  which  have  been  disproven,  are  the  mor-­ tality  rates  for  the  diseases  that  they  prevent,  especially  among  children  such  as  her  own.

The  best  way  to  stop  these  preventable  deaths  and  lower  these  fatality  rates  is  for  all  parents  to  vaccinate  their  children.

The  UW-­Whitewater  Student  Optimist  Club  teams  up  with  the  Red  Cross  to  host  its  blood  drive  every  April  and  November.

The  blood  drive  this  se-­ mester  was  held  April  9  to  10  in  Esker  Dining  Hall.

Schouten is not only trained to deal with sexual assaults, but is president of the board of directors for Wisconsin’s Coalition Against Sexual Assault. She said many times, students are afraid to call the police on behalf of a friend or themselves if they have been drink-­ ing, but assures students “we need people to call.”

The UW-­W Police Services gives “medical amnesty,” to stu-­ dents. If someone is involved in a dangerous situation, yet is drinking underage, he or she will not receive

a citation by reporting the situation to the police. The Police Services DOVR ZLOO VHQG DQ RI¿ FHU WR PHHW DQ\ victim of a sexual assault where they are located.

The campus police will partici-­ pate in Denim Days on April 23 for YLFWLPV DURXQG WKH ZRUOG 2I¿ FHUV will wear jeans for the day to sym-­ bolize their support.

Denim Days originated from an Italian case that ruled a woman had not been raped because her jeans were declared too tight to be removed by another person. Na-­ tionwide, people will wear, hang or

decorate denim in honor of sexual assault victims.

UW-­W will collect jeans in col-­ lection boxes at Goodhue, UHCS and residence halls for survivors in need. Old cell phones and chargers also can be dropped off in Goodhue for domestic violence victims to be used as an emergency connection.

“Almost everyone knows some-­ one who is a survivor of sexual as-­ sault,” Eisenreich said. She said she hopes the event “can help spread awareness of the issue and help put a stop to it.”

The  most  noticeable  difference  is  the  change  of  venue  from  the  usual  Pumpers  and  Mitchells  bar  in  downtown  Whitewater  to  the  College  Pub  across  the  street.

Music  Director  Justin  Cun-­ ningham  has  helped  in  organizing  the  Fund  Drive  for  four  years  and  said  the  event  needed  a  change  of  pace.  He  said  he  is  certain  this  will  be  the  best  one  yet.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;We  have  an  excellent  lineup  this  year,â&#x20AC;?  Cunningham  said.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Great  music  from  all  around  the  Cunningham state,  lots  of  different  genres  as  well.â&#x20AC;?

Along  with  a  week  of  music  at  the  College  Pub  from  April  22  to  26,  there  will  be  a  dunk  tank,  so  students  under  the  legal  age  can  enjoy  Fund  Drive  festivities.  The  dunk  tank  will  be  active  from  11  a.m.  to  2  p.m.  on  April  23  at  the  North  Mall  of  the  UC. LEAP: Campus initiative plans to raise awareness through art Continued  from  page  10 The  new  Marvel  movie  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Cap-­ tain  America:  the  Winter  Soldierâ&#x20AC;?  is  being  hailed  by  many  as  the  best  in  the  incredibly  productive  se-­ ries.  Granted,  thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  what  they  said  about  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thor:  the  Dark  World,â&#x20AC;?  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iron  Man  3,â&#x20AC;?  â&#x20AC;&#x153;The  Avengers,â&#x20AC;?  and,  oh  you  get  my  point.

The  movie  opens  with  a  dem-­ onstration  of  the  Captain  being  superhuman,  a  fact  that  is  shoved  in  our  face  over  and  over  again  ad  nauseam.  Sometimes  liter-­ ally,  like  during  the  nearly  half  a  dozen  times  he  survives  what  Review by should  be  a  fatal  Nat Edson fall.

In  this  movie,  the  stupid  thing  ricochets  back  and  forth  a  half  GR]HQ WLPHV EHIRUH Âż QDOO\ Ă&#x20AC; \ ing  right  back  into  his  hands.  The  whole  thing  is  so  silly  looking  it  had  me  starting  to  believe  the  Cap-­ tainâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s   super  power  is  advanced  ge-­ ometry.

Speaking  of  not  having  super  powers,  where  are  all  the  other  members  of  the  Avengers  dur-­

ing  this?  Iron  Man  is  off  stopping  people  who  have  lava  bodies,  and  Thor  is  stopping  the  dark  elves  from  collapsing  the  universe,  so  Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d  give  you  those,  although  it  seems  iffy  that  theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d  happen  at  exactly  the  same  time.  But  what  about  the  Hulk,  or  Hawkeye?  What  were  they  doing  this  whole  time?

Now  donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  get  me  wrong,  Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m  not  oblivious  to  the  goal  of  the  movie.  You  canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  come  to  some-­ thing  like  this  expecting  â&#x20AC;&#x153;The  Artist,â&#x20AC;?  although  certain  portions  of  the  movie  would  have  been  im-­ proved  by  silence  (Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m  looking  at  you,  Scarlett  Johansson).  Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m  sorry,  but  when  your  at-­ tempt  at  a  breathy  voice  makes  it  sound  like  you  just  got  done  jog-­ ging  the  entire  movie,  youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve  hit  a  point  of  diminish  returns.  Also,  wash  the  gravel  out  of  your  throat.

Even  on  mute  sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  annoying.  She  keeps  bouncing  around  be-­ tween  being  a  hardened  killer,  an  angst-­ridden  teenager  and  a  wom-­ an  scorned.  Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  two  and  a  half  extremely  annoying  archetypes,  and  the  combination  is  worse  than  the  sum  of  its  parts.

You  ready  for  the  lightning  round?  Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  talk  about  the  Falcon.  Why  does  his  jetpack  have  wings?  Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  got  rockets,  he  never  needs  WR Ă&#x20AC; DS WKHP DQG GRQÂśW VD\ LWÂśV WR VWHHU EHFDXVH FRQWURO Âż QV GRQÂśW need  to  be  wing-­shaped  and  have  elaborate,  decorative  feathers.  And  why  do  the  wings  have  to Â

fold  into  the  jetpack?  Cinematic  convenience,  Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m  assuming,  but  folding  them  that  many  times  would  probably  give  the  wings  the  strength  of  wet  cardboard.  Also,  and  this  one  is  almost  too  easy,  he  never  reloads  his  guns  in  that  movie.  So  unless  that  jetpack  has  some  magical  reloading  prop-­ erties  to  go  along  with  its  magical  super  strong  wings,  those  are  some   large  clips  in  those  small  guns.

2ND\ Âż QH Âł:DV LW HQWHUWDLQ ing?â&#x20AC;?  Yes.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Was  the  action  cool?â&#x20AC;?  Yes.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Was  the  plot  good?â&#x20AC;?  No,  no  it  wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t,  but  thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  what  you  get  for  jamming  decades  of  comic  book  plot  into  a  two-­hour  movie.

I  will  admit,  it  wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  the  worst  two  hours  Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve  ever  spent  watch-­ ing  movies.  Scarlett  Johanssonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  hair  looked  awful,  but  other  than  that,  the  special  effects  were  good,  and  other  than  her  acting,  the  act-­ ing  was  acceptable.  Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  worth  see-­ ing  but  at  the  end  of  the  day  it  feels  like  little  more  than  a  set  up  for  the  next  Marvel  movie.  You  know,  like  every  Marvel  movie.

SPOILER  ALERT:  Nick  Fury  is  played  by  Samuel  L.  Jackson  in  the  movie.  When  Marvel  rebooted  the  franchise  under  the  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Ultimateâ&#x20AC;?  moniker,  they  asked  Jackson  for  his  permission  to  make  the  Nick  Fury  character  look  like  him.  This  ZDV \HDUV EHIRUH KH Âż UVW WRRN RQ the  role.

Living  more  than  4,200  miles  away  in  Cologne,  Germany,  Ma-­ reike  Adermann  enjoyed  years  of  playing  stand-­up  basketball.  It  wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  until  several  ACL  in-­ juries  later,  at  the  age  of  17,  that  forced  her  to  put  a  hold  on  playing  a  sport  she  loved.  Instead  of  calling  it  quits,  Adermann  found  another  way  to  stay  on  the  court,  deciding  to  pur-­ sue  a  collegiate  and  international  athletic  career  in  wheelchair  bas-­ ketball.   In  2008,  Adermann  joined  ASV  Bonn,  a  professional  squad  in  Germany,  getting  the  chance  WR SDUWLFLSDWH LQ ERWK LWV Âż UVW DQG third  divisions.  Although  she  ad-­ mitted  her  playing  time  was  limit-­

ed,  the  experience  was  a  valuable  part  of  learning  the  game. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I  didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  really  play  much  for  WKH Âż UVW GLYLVLRQ WHDP EXW SOD\ ing  for  them  gave  me  some  extra  training,â&#x20AC;?  Adermann  said.  She  only  played  one  year  of  wheelchair  basketball  before  crossing  the  Atlantic  to  play  at  the  collegiate  level.  Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  head  coach  Dan  Price  said  Adermann  also  showed  interest  in  the  University  of  Ala-­ bama  but  ultimately  chose  to  join  the  Warhawks. â&#x20AC;&#x153; [ M a r e i k e ]  made  the  initial  contact,  but  once  we  got  her  here,  ZH GHÂż QLWHO\ UH cruited  her  really  hard,â&#x20AC;?  Price  said.  Price â&#x20AC;&#x153;We  wanted  to  make  sure  that  she  became  a  War-­ hawk,  and  weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re  happy  she  chose  so.â&#x20AC;?

Gomez  leads  the  Brewersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;  charge Brewers Column Even  though  heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  not  your  proto-­ typical  lead-­off  hitter,  Carlos  Gomez  is  setting  the  tone  on  the  top  of  the  Milwaukee  Brewersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;  lineup.  Gomez,  28,  entered  Monday  with  a  .373  batting  average  along  with  a  team-­high  four  home  runs.  His  batting  average  of  balls  in  play  is  a  monstrous  .438  and,  as  a  result,  heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  reaching  base  safely  on  a  more  consistent  basis  than  ever  before  in  his  career.  He  also  ranks  third  in  the  majors  with  10  runs  scored.

With  big  bop-­ pers  like  Ryan  Braun  and  Aramis  Ramirez  hitting  behind  him,  Go-­ mez  realizes  that  getting  on  base  is  Justin Schultz Staff Writer important,  but  also  realizes  that  he  has  mighty  home  run  power.  His  ability  to  hit  home  runs,  along  with  his  low  walk  rate,  makes  him  an  unusual  lead-­off  hitter.

Typically,  lead-­off  hitters  are  speedy  singles  hitters  who  force  the  pitcher  to  throw  a  lot  of  pitches.  While  Gomez  has  blazing  speed,  he  doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  see  many  pitches.  Manager  Ron  Roenicke  knows  not  to  mess  with  success.

The  Brewers  (10-­2  as  of  Sun-­ day  night)  are  on  a  nine-­game  win-­ ning  streak,  sweeping  three-­straight  series  against  last  yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  World  Series  champion  Boston  Red  Sox,  Philadelphia  Phillies  and  Pittsburgh  Pirates.  Without  Gomezâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  success  at  the  plate,  the  Brewers  wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  be  sitting  atop  the  National  League  Central.

Luckily  for  the  Brewers,  Gomez  doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  seem  to  be  slowing  down  anytime  soon.  Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  already  made  a  handful  of  highlight  plays  this  sea-­ son.

Before  the  Brewers  traded  for  Gomez  in  2009,  Gomez  was,  at  best,  an  average  major  league  player.  His  two  former  teams,  the  New  York  Mets  and  Minnesota  Twins,  wanted  him  to  hit  the  ball  on  the  ground  and  use  his  speed.  Gomezâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  statistics  suf-­ fered  because  of  it.

When  Gomez  arrived  in  Milwau-­ kee,  the  Brewers  told  him  to  play  to  his  strengths;Íž  swing  away.  And  even  though  it  took  Gomez  a  few  seasons  to  crack  the  starting  lineup,  he  was  KDSS\ WKDW KH FRXOG Âż QDOO\ EH WKH player  he  truly  was.  Gomez  is  signed  WKURXJK DQG IRU WKH Âż UVW WLPH in  his  career,  doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  have  to  worry  about  his  long-­term  future.

score  of  622.  Depauw  University  took  second  with  a  625  shot.  The  host,  Illinois  Wesleyan,  took  third  with  626.

Olivia  Lugar  of  Washington  University-­St.  Louis  and  Katie  Klosterman  of  Illinois  Wesleyan  tied  with  the  best  individual  score  of  150.  The  Warhawks  said  they  are  looking  forward  to  hosting  this  weekendâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  tournament  at  Delbrook  Golf  Course  in  Delavan,  Wis. They  have  taken  the  top  spot  in  three  of  the  four  years  they  have  hosted  it,  with  sophomore  Sammie  Leibham  winning  it  last  year. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I  feel  like  any  team  should  have  an  advantage  at  home,â&#x20AC;?  Weber  said.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;If  we  can  get  those  rounds  in,  we  have  a  chance  to  compete  for  the  title,  which  we  have  had  a  lot  of  suc-­ cess  in  the  past.â&#x20AC;?

Another  advantage  of  hosting  the  meet  is  the  entire  team  gets  a  shot  to  card  a  low  score.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Everybody  gets  a  chance  to  tee  it  up  at  home,  so  itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  a  nice  treat,â&#x20AC;?  Weber  said.
