Campaign aims to turn cigarette butts into benches Brad Allen Biz & Tech Editor

Benches are a place to rest your butt. But what about a bench made out of butts?

Cigarette butts, that is.

Downtown Whitewater, Inc. has partnered with Terracycle, a non-profit organization based in New Jersey, to conduct an ongoing project in which cigarette butts are recycled into fiberglass and plastic materials to be reused for various projects, including creating park benches, recycling containers and playground equipment.

“The city’s been wanting to do something for a while that would really encourage people to use a uniform receptacle downtown to prevent cigarette butts from ending up on the ground,” Director of Downtown Whitewater, Inc. Courtney Nelson said.

Terracycle shipped several receptacles to Downtown Whitewater, Inc., which will be used to collect cigarette butts. When the holders become full, they will be shipped to the Terracycle facility, where the company will break down the cigarette filters and form them into fiberglass.

The process of recycling the cigarette butts in various products is completed in three steps:

paper and ash, and the non-organic waste is the cigarette filter and packaging.

Sterilization under special circumstances: In cases where cigarette waste is collected from a location with a high risk of contamination; the cigarette waste is sterilized using gamma radiation and tested for bacteria in the waste.

Solution: Organic waste is sent to tobacco composting facilities. The non-organic waste is blended with other recycled material and pelletized to be used to create various recycled plastic products.

Warhawk Fitness spreads cheer at Fairhaven Students bond with Fairhaven residents Nathan Kober Staff Writer

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawk Fitness and Aquatics decorated Christmas cookies at the Fairhaven Senior Services residency in Whitewater on Friday, Dec. 2 Christine Panella, a graduate student at UW-Whitewater, helped coordinate the event and said it was part of the Warhawk fitness team monthly volunteer program.

“We came here for bingo night and everybody loved it, so

we wanted to come back and do something for the holidays,” Panella said.

The volunteers decorated more than 400 cookies, working alongside residents in the Fellowship Hall at Fairhaven.

Brian Robinson, the director of leisure services at Fairhaven, worked to create an event where residents and volunteers can get to know each other.

“It means a lot to them,” Robinson said. “They really like it especially when students are visiting.”

Jim Rustmuller, a resident at Fairhaven, said he attended UW-Whitewater when it was called the

Whitewater Teachers College, and he has lived near Whitewater almost all of his life.

Rustmuller decorated cookies alongside Sydney Sprinkel, a senior at UW-Whitewater majoring in elementary education.

“It’s great to see people stay connected here for so long,” Sprinkel said.

The event was part of the warhawk fitness pay it forward volunteer project.

Whitewater hosts first annual winter market Whitewater City Market shines during Parade of Lights Hailee Jensen Staff Writer

People came bundled up on a chilly Friday night to enjoy the holiday festivities kicking off the Christmas season downtown Whitewater on Dec. 2 from 5-8 p.m.

West Main Street was filled with a variety of Christmas lights and different stands for the first annual winter City Market for people to check out while awaiting the Christmas parade of lights.

Festivities included woodfired pizza from Flying Cow Pizza, a predominantly mobile

pizza company based out of Oconomowoc. Studio 84 was selling hot chocolate and cookies as a fundraiser. Santa made a visit for pictures, along with a big bonfire to keep everyone warm and to enjoy s’mores for a sweet tooth.

Lester’s Bison Farm had a stand at the City Market selling jerky and beef sticks and will be continually sold at the lakefront every Tuesday from 4-6 p.m.

“I love Whitewater it’s a great town, a nice family feel. Its nice to see college kids come by, I love it here,” Barbara representative from Lester’s Bison Farm said.

Studio 84 did a special onenight appearance in the market. Warming everyone with hot chocolate and sweets, all money from the night went to-

wards the studio. It is a inexpensive non-profit art studio for adults and children with special needs.

“It’s really just to buy the art supplies, the canvases, and to keep the lights on,” Barb Kienbaum from Studio 84 said. “My son is autistic and he takes classes there, it’s fantastic.”

Whitewater City Market will be holding mini markets throughout the winter. The mini market takes places on Tuesday’s from 4-6 p.m. in the Cravath Lakefront community building. This allows community members to still get their fresh foods, even though the summer markets have come to a close for the season.

The mini market has a Facebook page posting each week all of the goods sold at the market.

“One of the greatest challenges has been getting people to follow on multiple platforms,” McGuire said. “Facebook is a really big platform for multiple generations, so it’s been a really big part of our process, driving traffic from social media to websites. Also challenging has been thinking outside the box on what’s going to engage people.”

It all starts with an idea. An idea can grow into a business through passion, immeasurable effort and dedication.

An array of innovators—a mix of UW-Whitewater students and Whitewater community members—gathered inside the UW-Whitewater Technology Park, 1221 Innovation Dr., on Nov. 30 to “share the secret sauce” on their companies and organizations. “[The Innovator’s Showcase] is one of my favorite events,” Chancellor Beverly Kopper said.

“There’s this energy that exists, and it’s a credit to every person involved. There’s this synergy that happens among everyone, and it’s amazing. We’re talking about folks, who working together in all kinds of partnerships, can change the world.”

Here are some of the ideas shared at the event last week:

Embracing entrepreneurial spirit through members Luke Olson, president of the UW-Whitewater chapter of the Collegiate Entrepreneurs Organization (CEO), said the student organization allows its members to pursue their business dreams.

“We embrace the entrepreneurial spirit through our members,” Olson said. “We give them business-model canvases and website development tools to map out their ideas.”

CEO has an annual competition for student entrepreneurs.

The Warhawk Business Plan competition lets contestants submit their startup ideas to a team of judges for a chance to win $1,000.

A free semester worth of tuition was awarded to one student, Olson said.

“CEO really embraces new ideas, so it’s very invigorating for us to be able to put those ideas into a place that harnesses that vibrant energy,” Olson said.

Holtan won the 2016 Warhawk Elevator Pitch Competition and has completed several prototypes.

Holtan said she hopes to complete a full commercial launch in April 2017.

Holtan is working on an app for users to use their cell phone to control the color and design of the lights on their equipment.

‘We’ll figure out the motor thing later’ Community member Dustin Herte, Founder of Odyssey Trikes, designed a street-legal electrical three-wheeled vehicle.

“It all started as a high school project,” Herte said. “I cobbled this thing together out of parts I found lying around—didn’t cost me a penny. I put a motor in it, but it didn’t have much starting power. So I told my buddy, ‘Hey, push me!’ I’m thinking, ‘We’ll figure out the motor thing later.’”

Herte said a few moments later, he came flying around a tight corner. To this day, a large skid mark remains on the pavement where the frame of the trike broke.

He recently set the record among electric vehicles for distance traveled on a single charge: A total of 360 miles.

“This isn’t a bicycle, this isn’t a Tesla Roadster, but if you put

them both on the track, this thing would outrace them in distance quite a bit,” Herte said. “I drove this thing out of state this year.”

The company is in communication with NASA in regards to hopefully using the technology of the trikes in satellites, Herte said.

Speeding up the hiring process Founder and CEO of Rate the Student LLC Austin Beveridge said his website seeks to help employers to conduct faster background checks on interviewees during the hiring process.

“There’s a huge amount of time invested between initial application receival and the final hiring date,” Beveridge said. “Time is money. If we can reduce that time—even by a week—we can eliminate a huge amount of cost.”

The website is a platform that connects students, references and potential employers to one another. The website’s process allows each party to create an account to store and share real-time information, instead of conducting phone calls.

Increasing businesses’ social media awareness Advantage Media founder Mike Foerster said he created a website designed to increase social media awareness for companies.

Projects Leader Adam Schubert said the UW-Whitewater chapter of Enactus is currently working on four main projects: A downtown project to cultivate business expansion. Enactus has partnered with Studio 84 and Dale’s Bootery for this project.

Scouting Forward, a program focused on demonstrating benefits of using Bio Stimulants in crop rotation. Enactus has partnered with a university in Morocco for this project, and two UW-W students will go to Morocco to further discuss the project.

The Honduras project to help set up a self-sustaining hydroponics farm in Linaca, Honduras to increase crop growth efficiency and benefit the impoverished community.

Combat Blindness, a project spearheaded by British doctor Andrew Bastawrus to treat of blindness in sub-Saharan Africa through using a new smartphone app which scans eyes for diseases. Enactus hosted Bastawrus as a speaker on campus earlier this year, and has held fundraisers.

Terracycle pays one dollar to its partners for every full container of cigarette butts. Nelson said all funds gained through this project will be used to fund other green energy projects in the Whitewater community.

It’s not a lot of money, but we’re getting funds from something that would otherwise go into a landfill,” Nelson said. “So it seems like a win-win for everybody.”

Terracycle public affairs specialist Lauren Taylor said the organization was originally founded in 2001 as fertilizing company to reuse farm waste.

Terracycle is partnered with 25 cities in the U.S., including Baltimore, Maryland, New Orleans, Louisiana, St. Louis, Missoui and Portland, Oregon.

“For anybody who wants to try to keep waste out of a landfill, we want to be there to help with that process,” Taylor said. “We’d like to continue to grow to keep the value of resources to be reused, and we want to keep waste out of the environment.”

A long-term partnership The Butts to Benches campaign has an indefinite timetable, Nelson said. So the receptacles downtown are here to stay.

“The canisters are permanent,” Nelson said. “We’ll keep sending cigarette butts for as long as Terracycle will accept them. We’re looking at this as a long-term partnership.”

Downtown Whitewater, Inc. is looking to expand its partnership with Terracycle to include other zero-waste projects.

Downtown Whitewater, Inc. also works with John’s Disposal, a recycling company that serves a multitude of cities in southern Wisconsin, to reduce the amount of waste in the community.

Nelson said the number one thing people can do to help is to use the receptacles.

Business and politics: A deadly combination?

The United States has been debating whether corporations are constitutionally “people” for a few years now. Citizens United was a Supreme Court ruling that declared that corporations can be considered individuals.

This decision has opened up new doors for corporations and businesses. In Milwaukee, Penzey’s Spices emailed a newsletter to their customers, condemning the election of Donald Trump and all those who supported him.

Penzey’s owner, Bill Penzey, said, “You just voted for an openly racist candidate for the presidency of the United States of America...You really are a good bunch, but you just committed the biggest act of racism in American history since Wallace stood in the schoolhouse doorway 53 years ago, make this right. Take ownership for what you have done and begin the pathway forward.”

This newsletter has prompted many to take action and many call for a boycott which was not successful because Milwaukee tends to lean Democratic. The question remains though, should a business use its resources to promote one political agenda over another?

It is not a surprise that they can, but should they, from a business standpoint? A lot of people shop at stores and relax from their everyday lives, but when a business engages in political discussions it takes away from that peaceful experience.

If this was a reversed and someone was condemning Clinton, would that be respected or promoted?

The idea that just because someone chose to vote for Trump, that they instantly “committed an act of racism,” is horribly misconstrued.

Someone should not feel unwanted by a business or feel as though their beliefs are wrong.

Businesses should appeal to their customers, allowing them to feel welcomed and comfortable while shopping in a store. People can always chose to shop elsewhere, but

why run that risk?

Not only can these businesses put their customers in a difficult position, but they can put their employees as well. If a business gets involved with political discussions, or thoughts, those can be transferred to the representation of their employees.

Now, imagine the person discussing political views is the boss or CEO. Political opinions have no place in the workplace or in a business.

We need to ensure that everyone feels comfortable and safe working and shopping.

The best way we can all ensure

that this happens is to respect, acknowledge and understand each other and their opinions and beliefs. This can be by not discussing them or by simply ignoring someone when they start to ramble on about something they believe.

Employers need to ensure that employees are represented in the business. There are going to be individuals who have differing beliefs and those need to be respected.

Instead of focusing on all the bad things that have happened in the recent years, why not take a positive approach and extend a hand in friendship and tolerance instead of one laced with cyanide? When given the option, choose the higher road.

System regent seeks to find end to sexual violence *Editors note: Claims made have yet to be independently verified.

In the Nov. 30 edition of the Royal Purple, a letter to the editor was addressed to Chancellor Kopper in regards to the issue of sexual assaults on campus. At the beginning of the article it was stated that Chancellor Kopper has not spoken about the issue of sexual assaults on campus and that to knowledge has said or done nothing about it.

It was also said that some are concerned that the University is avoiding these discussions because it may shed a negative light on the University. These listed above statements and presumptions are counter-factual.

The Chancellor has spo-

ken about sexual assault several times this semester alone. She has touched on the issue at the State of University, a welcoming email to employees and students at the beginning of the semester, and most recently as a WSG forum on sexual assault.

There are campus committees that meet regularly regarding this issue. There are programs put on by the University in regards to these issues such as, prevention and reporting trainings put on by University Police.

There are many examples that would disprove the assumption that the Chancellor has said or done nothing regarding this issue and I would be happy to further enlighten you about actions specifi-

cally taken at UW-W. As far as the UW System, over the past two years the UW System Task Force on Sexual Violence and Harassment has been working hard to address this issue. President Cross, in a press release on Dec. 5, acknowledges this report and mentions the recommendation for sexual violence and harassment training for all UW employees and students.

The University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents will be meeting on December 8th, receiving a report, and voting on proposed updates to sexual harassment policies. The UW Board of Regents, UW System Administration, along with Chancellors at all of our UW campuses are committed to preventing

sexual assaults and providing support and resources to those who are impacted by such acts.

What is written above comes from my point of view as an administrator.

From an administrator point of view, the issue of sexual assault is something that personally shakes me.

I believe however that my point of view as a fellow student here on campus is what will be most impactful regarding this issue. My message is: It’s on us. Students are the ones who have the ability and opportunity to make the biggest, most effective, impact on the issue of sexual assault. Change does not come from one person, one administration; it comes from the people.

Us. Together. It is us who

needs to speak out against and condemn sexual assault. It is us who needs to help make a positive difference.

It’s walking your friend home from the bars. It’s speaking out against something you see. It’s being someone who is there for others and willing to listen.

It will take you, me, us, and everyone working together to make a change for the better.

The student body should say ‘no’ to smoke-free Over the past year, talk has been circulating about whether or not to make the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater a tobacco-free campus. I was against it last year and I am pleased to say that I am against it this year too.

If you were around last year, you have probably heard about this or were a part of the demonstration that happened outside the University Center. I was part of the demonstration, supporting Whitewater Student Government and the student body.

The tobacco-free policy is a “voluntary” policy that would ask students to leave campus to use tobacco. Having gone to the forum, I can say that a reasonable doubt still persists that this policy is even capable of being enforced.

One of the options to help enforce this “voluntary” policy, is to shame students into leaving campus to smoke. Although this is just an idea, I do not think it is okay to have students walking around campus pressuring other students to leave campus or lecture them on their personal health decisions.

In the policy description, Chapter UWS 17 is referenced. Wisconsin State Legislature lists this chapter as “Student Nonacademic Disciplinary Procedures.”

Why would a “voluntary policy” need discipline proce-

dures? Isn’t that the opposite of a “voluntary policy?”

If this policy happens, what’s stopping the campus from patrolling the dining halls shaming people who eat dessert because it can harm your health? Obesity is a nationwide epidemic and is just as worrisome, so why should the university stop at tobacco?

Last week I mentioned that this policy could hurt many students on campus, leaving a bigger threat for sexucolumn by Dusty Hartl al assaults at these Opinions Editor off-campus smoking hubs. With the days getting shorter, it is not too far fetched to assume that many students would feel threatened or scared to leave campus to smoke or use tobacco.

In 2015, a survey was issued to students on campus who were enrolled in health related courses. These survey results have been labeled by many as improperly conducted and containing discrepancies.

Students reported in the 2015 survey that they feel somewhat safe 46.8 percent of the time and very safe 40.8 percent of the time at night, on campus.

This data reveals students are feeling less safe at night compared to during the day. The 2015 sur-

vey concludes that many students feel more uncomfortable walking around campus at night rather than during the day.

Wanting students to walk off students is pressuring them into situations that they may feel uncomfortable with.

It was said that this policy would cut the time from 30 years to 15 years to eliminate smoking altogether, but will it? Students already have the option to smoke or not to smoke because smoking is already voluntary.

Smoking, in itself, is a personal health decision that the university has no place sticking its nose into.

If someone chooses to smoke because they have stress, depression, or anxiety then so be it.

The university will not ban emotional support animals, medications, or professional therapy and those are other routes to take to treat illnesses, so why would they tell students not to smoke?

The university is not just taking away students’ rights, but they are also trying to devolve personal choice. If someone chooses to smoke, that is their choice and no one should stand in the way of that.

In the 2015 survey, it is slated that a majority, 65.2 percent, of students want a tobacco-free policy, while the majority of those

surveyed, 81.6 percent, said they do not want to receive information on tobacco use. Were those being polled actually educated on what a tobacco-free policy would entail?

It was admitted in the forum that smoking is at an all-time low and the amount of smokers are decreasing every year.

This tobacco-free policy infringes on students’ rights and it was said that only one faculty governing body has agreed to this policy. This leaves me to question who really wants to pass this disastrous policy because clearly it is not our student legislative body.

The body that we elect to hear and voice our concerns. The body that is elected with the primary goal of helping and promoting students rights.

I’ve come to the only conclusion is that this is for marketing purposes and not for the safety or well-being of students. If it was for the well-being of students, then it would not be a voluntary policy, but instead a ban altogether. In the end, the university is not trying to initiate this policy because they care about you, but because of the various marketing opportunities it brings. If they really cared about your health this would not be a voluntary policy, but a ban altogether, which is even more terrifying.

Health as a whole: Pushing limits with group fitness

People with memberships to the Williams Center have access to the many fitness classes offered at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Warhawk Fitness offered 12 group fitness classes through the 2016 Fall semester. Classes will continue until the week of Dec. 19. Classes include: yoga, turbokick, core complete, tabata, step, group strength, insanity, cycling, total exhaust, triple threat, TRX and PiYo. Danielle Hansen, Group Fitness Student Manager, has taught classes since her sophomore year at UW-W and has managed for two years.

She will graduate this month with a degree in health and human performance.

“Knowing in big or small ways having that impact on people and helping them reach their goals is definitely what motivates me to teach,” Hansen said.

Her favorite classes to teach are Triple Threat and Insanity. Triple Threat was created last year

by Hansen and Hannah Anderson, University Fitness Student Manager. Hansen said triple threat allows for a variety of workouts in one and has a large following.

Triple Threat is a 60-minute class. It combines 20 minutes of strength training, 20 minutes high intensity interval training that changes every week and ends with 20 minutes of yoga. This

class is one of the more popular classes per Hansen and Anderson.

Anderson will graduate in May 2017 with a degree in Corporate Health Communications.

She started teaching classes her freshman year at UW-W. She attended regularly, decided to apply for an instructor position and is now becoming certified in group fitness teaching.

“The energy from other people and as well as the instructor really builds off one another,” Hansen said. “I think that’s what people like the most about it.”

The numbers of participants change as the semester continues. Yoga attracts the highest number class, capping at 30 participants, said Hansen. Numbers tend to decrease as the end of the semester approaches. But in the spring, numbers rise as people follow health-related New Year’s resolutions.

“Lately my favorite class to teach is tabata, hands down,” Anderson said. “It’s different every week; I put a lot of time into that class.”

Tabata is a new class offered through Warhawk Fitness. The format is timed and contains 20 seconds of work followed by 10 seconds of rest. Anderson strays from routine and adds a unique twist to each class.

She said the theory of tabata is going all out for 20 seconds and pushing yourself to the maximum. It builds strength, endurance and help reach the results wanted.

Another class Anderson has taught is turbokick, a pre-choreographed cardio kickboxing class that she is certified in.

It starts with upper body and lower body motions, moving to full body motions with punches and kicks and finishing with “full throttle”

which incorporates everything. Mixed in between each section are the turbo rounds, which are meant to be placed at the peak of class when the heart rate is the highest. She keeps the class the same for four to five weeks then changes the choreography.

Anderson mentioned the group fitness classes accommodate for all types of fitness levels, with three different levels in each class. Participants are able to choose the workout they want.

“Don’t be afraid to come and try,” Anderson said.

21 & Under: Non-drinking ‘drinking’ games

The point of drinking games may be to create competition and consume alcohol, and can be difficult for those who are not 21 or choose not to drink. There are multiple ways to be involved, participate and have fun. Here are a few popular drinking games that you can play alcohol-free and still have a blast with your friends.

Water Pong

Derived from the crazy popular Beer Pong, Water Pong can be played with the same rules as Beer Pong. Simply replace the beer with water.

You’ll need a long rectangular table, 24 plastic cups, two ping pong balls and water. Use the table and place 12 cups in a long triangle on each end, so that the bottom rows have four cups each. Fill each cup about a quarter of the way with water. Grab a partner and take turns tossing the ping pong balls across the table into the cups of the opposing team.

As you make it in the cups, the other team must remove the cups from play. As the amount of cups left dwindle down, your team propose two re-racks per game. This can happen when you get down to five or less cups left to hit. The first team to make a shot in all the cups wins.

Keep in mind: If you and your partner make it in all of the cups, the other team has one shot at a rebuttal. This means they can try shooting and making it in all of the cups they have left,

but they must continue to make it in the cups to get a chance at a tiebreaker. As soon as they miss the game is over. For more rules and regulations, visit www.bpong.com. This site will give you definitive rules on the game; just ignore the drinking rules and again, replace the beer with water.

Fizz Buzz

This game only requires a group of three or more friends. There are no teams in this game —every man and woman for themselves.

According to Dr. Michael Hartley from Mr. Mike’s Math Games For Kids, this game was derived from an elementary math game to teach children division. The game begins when a player is chosen to start: this player chooses a number from one to 99. The next person will say the next number counting up and continue to count clockwise around the group. Here’s where it gets interesting: if the number can be divided by five, instead of saying the number, this player must say “fizz” Also, if the number either contains a seven, or is divisible by seven, the player must say “buzz”.

When anyone says, “fizz” or “buzz”, the direction of the speaker is reversed. If a player hesitates, says the wrong number, forgets to say “fizz” or “buzz” when required, or says a number out of turn, they are out of the game.

The point of the game is to be quick and pay attention. The last person standing wins the game.

Never Have I Ever…

This game also only requires a group of any number of friends. Each player will hold up a number of fingers determined by the group, and begin with a ‘never have I ever…’ question.

Examples of question are “Never have I ever been to a Warhawk Gymnastics meet”, or “Never have I ever had a class in Hyer Hall”.

If a player has been to a Warhawk Gymnastics meet, or has had a class in Hyer Hall, they must put one of their fingers down signifying to the group that they have done it.

The year of 2016 has been quite the journey. From elections to the Olympics, this year was full of great feats and questionable acts. Though the typical “popular” music is embraced by many, I am here to campaign a much more traditional set of records. These genres of music are full of texture, roots, and diversity.

People of Whitewater: Meet Landlord Brad Ceranske

If you are a student living off campus then one person you will encounter is your landlord.

For some students, this can be intimidating and nerve racking. What many students don’t know however, is that the feeling is often mutual.

Brad Ceranske has been renting his properties in Whitewater to students since 2009 through/ Ceranske Property Management when he decided to go into business for himself due to the economic climate at the time.

Seven years later, Ceranske now owns 16

properties in Whitewater and is acquiring more each year. According to Ceranske, transitioning from working as a plastering foreman for someone else, to becoming a jack of all trades of his own business, his new position stays interesting.

A typical day for Brad is a “honey do list” from his wife Patty, who handles the books and repair calls.

“The only big difference between working for a company, and doing work for a company you own is all the paperwork,” Cerankse said.

“Collecting rent checks, paying taxes, and getting leases signed isn’t fun.”

Ceranske claims to be just as nervous about

renting a property to students as they are renting from him.

“You just hope you get good kids who aren’t going to break too much stuff, it’s about maintaining the relationship and limiting damage,” said Ceranske.

Ceranske said the job has it’s upsides. He likes to interact with tenants and be his own boss.

“Getting to rent to good, solid kids is something that makes this worth it to me,” Ceranske said.

Ice fishing team hopes for a bitter freeze Sam Frink Staff writer

T

he cold weather moving into the area has UW-Whitewater hard-water junkies gearing up for the ice fishing season.

UW-Whitewater students don’t need to look far to find a lake to participate in this Wisconsin pastime.

Whitewater sits within 10 miles of eight lakes suitable for the novice ice angler. Two of which don’t even require access to a vehicle.

Both Cravath and Tripp lakes are right in the heart of downtown Whitewater.

Cravath and Tripp lakes offer anyone with a Wisconsin fishing license a chance to catch Northern Pike, Bluegill and Largemouth Bass.

Ice fishing isn’t just recreation. For the UW-Whitewater Club Fishing team, the cold weather is used as the main fundraiser for the club.

“We count on our annual ice fishing jamboree for most of our fundraising,” said

UW-Whitewater club fishing team president, Steven Nebel. “Last years weak freeze really hurt our turnout, so we are counting on a better season this year.”

The Club Fishing team has its annual jamboree on Lake Beulah in East Troy on the first Saturday in March. The date is tentative, however, based on the weather and ice conditions.

“Last year we had power ice augers, ice rods, tip ups, and jackets,” fishing team treasurer Nick Anderson said.

’Hawks stunned by Blue Streaks Football squad bounced in quarterfinals in D-III college playoffs

John Carroll University came into Dec. 3’s NCAA quarterfinal game known as the team that beat perennial Division III powerhouse Mount Union.

Now John Carroll will add UW-Whitewater to that resume´.

The No. 6 John Carroll Blue Streaks defeated the Warhawks 31-14 to advance to the NCAA Semifinal.

It is the first time since the Eagles of UW-La Crosse in 1995, that a team has defeated both Mount Union and UW-Whitewater in the same season.

“There was just no consistency in what we were doing today,” head coach Kevin Bullis said. “We weren’t able to establish a run game consistently, and for us that’s always important.”

The Blue Streaks held the Warhawks to 199 yards under its season average.

The game opened with three straight punts before John Carroll put together an eight-play, 87-yard drive to take a 7-0 advantage with 4:07 left in the first quarter.

The Warhawks managed to get into the end zone when Wilber found senior tight end Brent Campbell with 10:51 to play, narrowing the margin to just 10.

After a three-and-out by John Carroll on the next possession, Wilber hit junior wide receiver Marcus Hudson down the right sideline for a 34-yard gain to set up a field goal attempt, which was missed wide right.

John Carroll drove down the field and all but sealed the victory with their final touchdown.

“We have a heck of a football team,” Bullis said. “I’m so proud of our guys and our program.”

Wilber was 12-of-34 for 116 yards

and one touchdown passing to go along with his rushing touchdown, but did throw two interceptions.

Meanwhile, the ground game for the Warhawks was just not a typical Warhawk performance.

“We tried to go back to the basics,” Wilber said. “We just weren’t able to get our stretches and smashes going.”

Sophomore running back Drew Patterson was held to 81 yards on 19 carries as he finished the season with 1,311 total yards and 19 total touchdowns.

Freshman running back Josh Ringelberg, who had consecutive 100-yard games in Whitewater’s two previous playoff games, was held to just 35 yards on 12 carries.

The loss is the first for Whitewater in the Quarterfinals in school history as the program was 10-0 in Quarterfinal games. It also breaks a 32 game winning streak the

“I’ve had a lot of success here, but today wasn’t our day,” said senior defensive end John Flood, one of the Warhawks’ team captains.

The Warhawks’ senior class concludes its four-year run with a 54-3 record, including a 31-1 mark at Perkins Stadium, to go along with three WIAC championships and two national titles.

“We’re disappointed, but I know this program inside and out and there’s no doubt they’ll be back next year trying for another national championship,” Flood said.

The loss concludes the Warhawks season. The 12-1 Warhawks will return their top passer, rusher, and tackler for next season.

Wrestlers split opening matches ’Hawks record first conference win in first scored meet of year

The No. 15 UW-Whitewater wrestling team did not waste any time in challenging itself as three of its first four duals of the season were against nationally ranked opponents.

The ’Hawks (2-2, 1-0) first competitive match of the season was also its first WIAC dual of the season against UW-Stevens Point (2-3, 1-1). UW-W came away with a 32-18 victory giving them a 1-0 record in the WIAC. The Warhawks recorded three pins and won six of the 10 matches in the dual. UW-SP took the opening two matches, but UW-W was able to win six of the next eight for the victory.

Junior Jordan Newman pinned UW-SP’s Cody Nielsen in the second round of their match. Newman is the No. 1 ranked wrestler in the 184 pound weight class according to d3wrestle.com and No. 3 by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA).

Junior Austin Quartullo recorded the final points of the dual for the ’Hawks with a 14-4 major decision victory in the 174 lbs. weight class.

Brodman talked about the importance of winning that first conference dual, especially against the rival Pointers.

“We don’t expect to lose any conference duals,” Brodman said. “Last year they beat us in kind of a weird dual. So this year we wanted to get after them and show them that was a fluke win last year.”

The ’Hawks then traveled to La Crosse over the weekend to take part in the Candelwood Suite Duals.

A loaded field included the No.15 ranked Warhawks, No.1 Wartburg College (Iowa), No.7 Concordia College (Minnesota) and No. 20 Cornell College (Iowa).

“They both beat some really good kids as freshman,” Brodman said.

“They’re developing and working hard and it’s fun to watch them wrestle” Brodman recorded a 13-5 major decision in his match. Newman was the lone Warhawk to record a victory in the upper weight classes as he defeated his opponent in a 6-1 decision at 184 lbs.

The Warhawks rebounded against No.20 Cornell College and recorded a 25-19 victory. Denny and Bonomo recorded pins to give the ’Hawks points. Junior Austin Quartullo and freshman Riley Kauzlaric recorded victories at 157 and 197 lbs., respectively.

UW-W lost a close dual against No.7 Concordia College 21-18. New-

man recorded his third victory of the day with a 12-0 major decision.

Denny and Brodman also notched wins in their matches. Denny won on a 6-4 decision and Brodman took home a 20-8 major decision.

Brodman was disappointed in the 1-2 result on the day but knows there is a lot of time for improvement.

“Overall in all the duals we wrestled pretty well”, Brodman said.

“Even against Wartburg the number one team in the country we still had a chance to win late in the dual.”

Brodman talked about watching his teammate Jordan Newman, who is No. 1 in his weight class.

“Man he is fun to watch,” Brodman said. “His strength and athleticism are amazing. When he gets after people you know that he’s going to whoop on them and there’s nothing they can really do about it.”

The Warhawks continue WIAC play against UW- Eau Claire at 7 p.m. on Dec. 8 in Eau Claire.

Men’s basketball topples Beloit Buccaneers

The UW-Whitewater men’s basketball team remained undefeated with an 80-72 victory over Beloit College on Nov. 29.

An efficient shooting day helped the ’Hawks thwart a comeback by the Buccaneers in the second half. UW-W shot 50 percent from the floor and 16 of 32 from the free throw line.

The Warhawks took the lead 11 seconds into the game and never looked back. Junior guard Chris Jones led all scorers with 24 points on 11 of 20 from the floor. Sophomore guard Andre Brown chipped in 15 points, 10 of which came from the free throw line.

Junior forward Scotty Tyler came one rebound shy of a double-double, scoring 14 points and hauling in nine rebounds. Senior guard Drew Bryson led the team with 36 minutes played. Bryson contributed in a number of ways with seven points, nine rebounds, six assists and two steals.

UW-W led by as many as 12 in the first half before Beloit College went on a 11-2 run to cut the lead to three with two minutes remaining in the first half.

Brown scored four points to give the ’Hawks a 36-30 halftime lead.

Beloit College narrowed the deficit to three early in the second half. The Warhawks responded with back-to-back three pointers by freshman guard Zach Knobloch and Bryson to increase the lead to 44-37.

Beloit College was unable to get within a possession for the remainder of the game.

The Hawks will return to action against Rockford College at 7 p.m. on Dec. 8 in Whitewater.

Blue Streaks end winning era I love the Warhawks, but John Carroll University is going down in D-III history for this season.

As a student and sports enthusiast at UW-Whitewater, it obviously hurts to watch the ’Hawks lose, but I will be lying if I said I was not excited to watch the ultimate underdog story.

The Blue Streaks grabbed my attention when they defeated No. 1 University of Mount Union 31-28 on Nov. 12, snapping the Purple Raiders’ 112-game and seven year regular season winning streak in their final regular season game.

When I saw the ’Hawks had the potential to meet them in the NCAA playoff, I was admittedly nervous.

The amount of hype surrounding a team after performing so monumentally cannot be ignored,

and between two teams that are statistically not far off from each other, that can be, and was, the defining factor in the quarter final Warhawk loss.

The Blue Streaks have averaged 34.8 points this season with 2,586 total rushing yards and 2,766 total passing yards. In comparison, UW-W averColumn by aged 35.2 points Ashley McCallum with 2,396 total co-Editor in Chief rushing yards and 2,772 total passing yards. Both teams won their respective conferences, UW-W being in arguably the toughest conference with the WIAC flaunting three teams in the playoff bracket and John Carroll coming

from the conference that is home to Mount Union, arguably the best team in D-III football history.

The Blue Streaks showed up to Wisconsin wanting it more.

They were high on the wave of their Mount Union defeat and it showed on the field.

UW-W is immune to winning.

When you have members of your team who witnessed the 2014 trifecta, consecutive conference championships and an overall winning attitude, winning becomes an expectation. For John Carroll, winning on a national platform was new and exciting and it gave them the extra spark to move forward to the semi-finals.

While a 12-1 record is still admirable, it feels like the equivalent of a losing season to some fans

who come to expect the ’Hawks athletes to be machines.

UW-W has not seen a national championship in an NCAA team since the 2014-2015 season. Warhawk teams have consistently fell flat in the playoffs since 2014.

Many schools considered a playoff berth as an accomplishment but for ours, it is just meh.

It may be time for Warhawk fans to confront the reality that maybe the wonder years are over. It was a fun run and we are proud of those times, but dynasties come to an end (refer to the current Packers season, post 90’s Bulls or 70’s UCLA). We can be hopeful for more great athletic runs, but the era of “all we do is win” is over.

Giannis is a Greek God; Let’s change our religion

Giannis Antetokounmpo is hard to spell. But what is not hard to say is “NBA Star” and frankly, that is what Giannis has become.

Let’s take a quick break from studying and writing essays and let’s talk about how freakin’ cool it is to have an NBA star on the Milwaukee Bucks. Not a “freaky” prospect, not an up-andcomer, not a pretty-good player, or an underrated guy, or Michael Redd. The Bucks have a star.

The Bucks get zero national attention, and deservedly so. The Bucks are perpetually, meh. And Milwaukee, as a city, from a national perspective, is boring. So why talk about the Bucks?

Because they now have the most interesting last name in the league. And he happens to be good. Really good.

Giannis has evolved, moving his way from the young kid we learned to love (and pronounce), to a stud who

impacts every single game in his own way.

The dude’s been posting insane numbers all season.

His combination of points (21.8), rebounds (8.5), assists (5.8), Column by steals (2.0) Josh Sinclair and blocks Assistant Sports (2.2) have Editor never been matched over a full season in league history. I don’t have a PhD in math but even I can understand the gravity of this insanity.

Across the nine major categories of advanced metrics tracked at Basketball-Reference.com, Antetokounmpo ranks among the top half of NBA players in eight of them.

And he’s 6’11”.

The idea of a 6-foot-11inch terror in the open court, dunking on opponents and making plays for teammates,

is unprecedented. Since the NBA-ABA merger in 1976, Toni Kukoc was the only player 6’10” or taller to have a higher assist rate than Antetokounmpo has right now — and Kukoc wasn’t also scoring or rebounding or recording steals and blocks at anywhere near the same rates as Antetokounmpo is.

Part of Antetokounmpo’s success comes from his physical profile. The Greek Freak can get from the 3-point line to the rim in just two steps without traveling or this thing called dribbling. Calling his Euro step a Euro step at this point is just accurate because his strides can take him across the entire European continent.

But not only is he a physical abnormality, he has a basketball IQ on his shoulders and don’t just take my word for it. Take his.

Antetokounmpo is now the most central part of everything the Bucks are doing.

The national media is also starting to notice. Zach Lowe, NBA staff writer and insider at ESPN, wrote about Antetokounmpo. No one could ever accuse Lowe of not being plugged into everything NBA, but it is still cool to Giannis leading his columns.

“This is getting scary,” Lowe wrote for ESPN. “Antetokounmpo is averaging more than two blocks per game, and opponents are shooting just 45 percent at the rim when he’s nearby -- a top-shelf mark for a center, let alone for whatever Antetokounmpo is.”

Long story short: Giannis is perfect and can do anything. Even if that includes being your point guard on offense and center on defense.

In the past week Giannis was discussed on The Ringer by staff writer Kevin O’Connor, ESPN TrueHoop podcast, and FiveThirtyEight. com –a website devoted to sports and political analytics.

Giannis has put the Bucks on the map. Prior to the season, teammate and underrated shooting guard Khris Middleton tore his hamstring which required surgery and forced him out until at least March.

At which point the Bucks season was lost to all of those who paid little attention. Giannis has brought that back.

His play is being noticed and rightly so. If he’s this good — and this versatile — now, watching Antetokounmpo reach his unknown potential will be one of the NBA’s most entertaining storylines over the decade to come.

Badgers break our spirits again Heartbreak.

It’s the only word to describe the emotions felt after the University of Wisconsin Badgers football team snatched a 28-7 lead in the Big Ten conference championship game but then proceeded to watch Penn State torch the vaunted defense in the second half.

Seeing a tweet from noted Barstool Sports contributor Dan Katz hit the nail right on the head for how Badgers fan felt following Column by the loss.

Justin St. Peter “ T h a t Sports Editor sucked but it was also Classic Wisconsin, no expectations at the start of the season, pull me in, make me believe, stomp my heart.”

The Badgers came into this offseason with absolutely no expectations because they would have to face a gauntlet type schedule with top ten opponents of LSU (Louisiana State University) at Lambeau Field, Michigan State

University, at the University of Michigan, vs. Ohio State University and University of Nebraska at home, and then the title game against Penn State University.

The Badgers still were able to pull off a 10-3 record, including a 3-3 record in those six games against top ten opponents. The Badgers, 10-3 overall, 7-3 in the Big Ten, which is the toughest conference in Division I college football, have plenty to be proud of in the team’s fantastic season.

When I walked into Lambeau Field to watch the Badgers take on LSU, I wasn’t sure what to expect. What I saw was the precursors to an absolutely dominant defense against LSU’s rushing attack.

The defense gave the Badgers a lead, UW’s quarterback messed up as per usual and the Badgers trailed again.

Then the offense stepped up and led a late drive to kick the game-winning field goal. The defense then came up with a valuable interception to thwart a possible late game-winning drive and the stadium erupted.

Watching the Badgers completely dominate Michigan State on the road in freshman quarterback Alex Hornibrook’s first career start was inspiring. It gave Badgers fans hope against top five opponents Michigan and Ohio State to come.

Those games proved to be extremely tight contests, but the Badgers lost in consecutive weeks. The Badgers even led for a large portion of the game before falling short in overtime against Ohio State.

The Badgers were able to survive injuries up and down the extremely deep linebacker core and offensive line.

The team saw the return of senior linebacker and defensive leader, Vince Beigel from missing multiple games with a cracked foot, only to see fellow star junior linebacker Jack Cichy be sidelined.

Junior linebacker T.J. Watt was able to play through a separated shoulder and put up another stellar season.

time and had a highlight reel pick-six against Michigan State.

Senior running back Corey Clement bounced back after a rough junior season to run for over 1,000 yards on the season while fellow senior running back Dare Ogunbowale became a great change of pace back.

Junior wide receiver Jazz Peavy and junior tight end Troy Fumagali each caught over 40 passes and 500 yards in receiving yards.

This team will see many players go to the NFL next year, but fans would love to see juniors like Fumagali, Watt, Cichy, Peavy and others to come back for their senior seasons.

Against No. 7 Nebraska on a Saturday night game at home, the Badgers dominated the game before allowing Nebraska to tie the game up late. Then the nervewracking overtime period happened.

Ogunbowale ran for a 10yard touchdown right in front of where I was standing in the corner of the end zone and the roar of the crowd

nearly deafened everyone in attendance.

The Badgers defense was able to force a fourth and goal where Nebraska had a chance to tie it up with an open receiver before Dixon flew from across the field and broke up the final pass, to eventually crown the Badgers as the Big Ten West champs.

Although the Badgers evoked buried memories of the University of Oregon, Texas Christian University (TCU), and Michigan State crushing losses of the past ten years or so, they still have a chance to put a positive stamp on the season with a Cotton Bowl appearance against the undefeated No. 12 Western Michigan Broncos at noon on Jan. 2.

I personally can’t wait to see the swan song of many of this season’s stars and watch Biegel and Watt terrorize the quarterback from each side of the line. This season will always be bittersweet for Badgers fans, but damn was it exciting. #OnWisconsin
