Valentine’s  Day  is  a  time  for  love,  romance,  chocolate,  and  this  year,  HIV  testing. The  PB  Poorman  PRIDE  Re- source  Center  is  hosting  UW- :KLWHZDWHUÂśV Âż UVW 6DIH 6H[ Drive.  Interns  from  PRIDE  will  be  tabling  in  the  University  Cen- ter  on  Feb.  13  and  14  providing  information  on  safer  sex  prac- tices.  There  will  also  be  safe  sex  kits  handed  out  on  Feb.  14. There  will  also  be  free  HIV  testing  from  9  a.m.  to  1  p.m.  Konrad and  5  to  6:30  p.m.  on  Feb.  14  in  U.C.  Room  68A. “It’s  a  great  day  to  remind  people  to  be  as  safe  as  pos- sible  in  sexual  encounters,â€?  Cindy  Konrad,  LGBT  Coordinator  said.  “We  wanted  to  have  a  Safer  Sex  Drive  to  provide  people  with  infor- mation  on  safer  sex,  to  provide  safer  sex  supplies,  and  to  make  it  quick  and  easy  to  for  people  to  get  HIV  testing.â€? DeJuan  Washington,  a  PRIDE  Resource  Center  intern,  contacted  Ritchie  Martin  about  adminis- tering  the  free,  anonymous  HIV  tests.  Martin  is  a  representative  from  UMOS,  a  Milwaukee- based  company,  where  he  has  ex- Washington perience  with  the  rapid  saliva  HIV  test.  Konrad  said  she  has  re- searched  the  rapid  saliva  test,  and  it  is  just  as  ac- curate  as  a  blood  test,  but  does  not  involve  nee- dles  and  only  takes  20  min-Â

Auction  sells  dates,  services RHA  looks  to  top  $300  earnings  from  last  year’s  event  By Alexandra Fischer Staff  Writer
First  dates  are  awkward,  un- comfortable,  and  for  most  girls,  it  can  be  a  “call  my  phone  with  a  fake  emergencyâ€?  kind  of  night.  Students  no  longer  have  to  encounter  the  unbearable  embarrass- PHQW RI D Âż UVW GDWH U W- W h i t e w a - ter’s  Residence  Hall  Association  is  providing  a  Date  and  Service  Auction  that  will  be  tak- ing  place  at  7  p.m.  on  Feb.  19  in  Jitters,  located  in  Wells  West.  The  Tutt/Knilans  Leadership  Involvement  Team  puts  on  this  fun,  unique  dating  experience  for  students  annually. “The  event  is  tradition  for  LIT  (Leadership  Involvement Â

A  broad  variety  of  dates  and  appropriate  services  will  be  available  for  every  individual’s  interests.   They  range  from  din- ner  at  UNOS  to  seeing  a  movie  in  Summers  Auditorium  followed  by  bowling. Services  in  the  past  have  included  three  trips  to  Wal- Mart  or  even  someone  car- rying  another’s  books  around  all  Lorenz day. “We  are  encouraging  anyone  who  lives  in  the  resident  halls  to  participate  and  be  apart  of  it  as  well,â€?  Jeni  Gruber  said,  another  co-Âprogrammer  for  RHA. Last  year,  the  Date  and  Ser- vice  Auction  raised  more  than  $300  for  a  breast  cancer  foun- dation,  and  each  year  the  group  works  together  to  decide  an  orga- nization  to  donate  the  money  to. a  dollar  and  will  accept  cash  or  purple  points.  The  proceeds  will  go  to  Reslife  scholarships  that  are  available  to  all  students  liv- ing  in  the  residence  halls.  Junior  Becky  Wintringer,  communication  coordinator  for  RHA,  participated  in  the  event  the  last  three  years.  “It’s  a  really  fun  environ- ment,�  Wintringer  said.  “Ev- eryone  is  really  excited  about  getting  a  chance  to  get  to  know  other  people.� The  date  or  service  will  be  introduced,  fol- Gruber lowed  by  an  en- tertaining  introduction  of  the  per- son  offering  the  date  or  service,  such  as  their  year  and  hobbies.  According  to  Lorenz,  there  has  been  a  wide  range  of  reac- tions  from  previous  audiences. “It’s  going  to  be  a  really  re- laxed  event  with  a  bunch  of  re- ally  fun  people,�  Gruber  said.
