Autumn’s Army “Once  a  Warhawk,  always  a  Warhawk.�  This  is  the  philosophy  head  coach  Bren-­ da  Volk  said  the  UW-­Whitewater  softball  program  stands  by.

It’s  what  made  Volk  reach  out  to  Lind-­ VD\ 0DUNRV D IRUPHU RXW¿ HOGHU IRU WKH Warhawks  softball  team,  after  hearing  about  her  daughter  Autumn’s  heart  com-­ plications.

The  softball  team  will  be  holding  mul-­ tiple  fundraisers  for  the  Markos  family  to  help  with  medical  expenses.  Today,  the  team  will  be  holding  a  fundraiser  at  Jes-­ sica’s  Family  Restaurant  in  Whitewater.

UW-­Whitewater  alumna  Lindsay  Markos  would  go  to  church  every  Sunday  with  a  beeper  in  her  lap,  praying  it  would  go  off.

Markos  knew  that  when  it  did,  it  meant  the  Herma  Heart  Center  of  Children’s  Hospital  in  Wisconsin  had  found  a  compatible  heart  for  her  four-­month-­old  daugh-­ ter,  Autumn,  who  had  two  congenital  heart  de-­ fects.

Lindsay  said  it  would  be  very  meaningful  for  the  beeper  to  go  off  on  a  Sunday. “So  many  important  things  have  happened  in  our  lives  on  a  Sunday,�  Lindsay  said.

It  was  on  a  Sunday  when  Markos  and  her  hus-­ EDQG $ODQ KDG WKHLU ¿ UVW FKLOG $OH[LV ,W ZDV DOVR on  a  Sunday  when  their  second  child,  Aiden,  was  born.

And  when  the  beeper  went  off  at  11:42  a.m.  on  Feb.  3,  2013,  marking  a  new  beginning  for  Au-­ tumn,  it  was  a  Sunday. “We  just  knew  that  everything  was  going  to  be  OK,�  Lindsay  said.

Heart 7KH Âż JKW Lindsay  and  Alan  found  out  26  weeks  into  their  pregnancy  that  Au-­ tumn’s  heart  wasn’t  developing  cor-­ rectly,  and  she  might  not  even  make  it  to  delivery. “That  was  probably  the  most  overwhelming  news,  just  hearing  there’s  a  40  percent  chance  she  wasn’t  going  to  make  it  to  deliv-­ ery,â€?  Lindsay  said.

Doctors  said  Autumn’s  initial  abnormality  was  Epstein’s  Anom-­ ally  and  Pulmonary  Atresia,  which  Stuart  Berger,  medical  director  at  the  Children’s  Hospital  told  WISN  Channel  12  is  basically  a  problem  with  the  right  side  of  the  heart.

Despite  the  odds,  Autumn  was  ERUQ DW ZHHNV RQ 2FW +HU Âż UVW surgery  was  just  eight  days  later.  The  months  that  followed  would  be  ¿ OOHG ZLWK ORQJ GD\V WHDUIXO QLJKWV and  many  uncertainties  at  the  Chil-­ dren’s  Hospital  for  the  Markos  fam-­ ily. “We  just  tried  to  stay  as  positive  as  we  could  and  take  everything  day  by  day,â€?  Lindsay  said.  Lindsay  and  Alan  wouldn’t  be  able  to  hold  their  newborn  child  for  days  at  a  time,  partly  because  her  chest  had  to  be  left  open  due  to  swelling.  A  clotting  disorder  was  one  complication  that  made  many  of  Autumn’s  initial  surgeries  unsuc-­ cessful.  After  it  was  decided  she  would  need  a  new  heart,  Autumn  was  moved  to  the  top  of  the  heart  trans-­ plant  list.

Continued  from  page  1 around  a  beeper  wherever  they  ZHQW ZDLWLQJ WR EH QRWLÂż HG RI D compatible  heart.  When  the  beeper  went  off,  the  family  hoped  this  sev-­ enth  procedure  would  be  Autumn’s  ODVW EHIRUH WKH\ FRXOG Âż QDOO\ WDNH her  home. $ QHZ KHDUW Autumn’s  transplant  took  eight  hours  and  went  very  smoothly  Lindsay  said.  The  Markos  family  was  able  to  take  Autumn  home  for  WKH Âż UVW WLPH Âż YH ZHHNV DIWHU KHU transplant. “Being  able  to  wake  up  in  the  morning  to  all  three  of  [our  kids]  is  a  blessing,â€?  Lindsay  said.

At  home,  Autumn   is  doing  well,  Lindsay  said.  Born  at  5  pounds,  7  and  a  half  ounces,  Autumn  is  now  SRXQGV DW Âż YH PRQWKV “The  transplant  team  kept  tell-­ ing  us,  ‘She’s  a  normal  baby  now,  you  need  to  treat  her  like  a  normal  baby,’â€?  Lindsay  said.

Normality  is  close  for  Autumn,  who  is  currently  on  16  medications  so  she  does  not  reject  her  new  heart.  Lindsay  said  that  after  a  year,  the  goal  is  for  Autumn  to  only  be  on  three  of  four  medications.

Looking  back  at  Autumn’s  struggle,  Lindsay  said  she  is  grate-­ ful  for  the  the  advancements  made  LQ WKH PHGLFDO Âż HOG WKDW KHOSHG save  her  daughter’s  life.  Lindsay  was  told  that  20  years  ago,  Autumn  probably  wouldn’t  have  made  it  with  her  heart  defects. “We  always  knew  how  lucky  we  were,â€?  Lindsay  said.  “It  just  shows  how  severe  her  condition Â

was.�

There  have  only  been  eight  cas-­ es  similar  to  Autumn’s  in  the  Type  D  category.  Autumn’s  old  heart  was  taken  to  a  medical  college  to  further  research  her  condition. “It’s  good  to  know  that  we  were  kind  of  able  to  help  with  that,�  Lindsay  said.

Warhawk  family After  learning  of  the  Markos  family’s  situation,  UW-­Whitewater  softball  head  coach  Brenda  Volk  said  she  knew  she  had  to  reach  out.  Volk  said  she  considers  Lindsay,  ZKR ZDV DQ RXWÂż HOGHU RQ WKH VRIW ball  team  from  2005  to  2006,  a  life-­ time  Warhawk. “Once  a  Warhawk,  always  a  warhawk,â€?  Volk  said.  “She  was  an  important  part  of  this  team  and  I  wanted  her  to  feel  that  support  of  the  family  that  we  try  to  create  here  at  UW-­Whitewater.â€?

Fisher,  who  is  currently  on  the  softball  team  and  is  also  Lindsay’s  cousin,  said  the  efforts  the  team  has  made  to  help  a  member  of  her  fam-­ ily  is  heart-­warming.

Lindsay  said  she  can’t  explain  how  thankful  the  family  is  for  the  support. “Just  knowing  that  we  have  the  support  of  Whitewater,  it  really  means  a  lot,�  Lindsay  said.  “We  are  very,  very  grateful.�

War on Drugs event comes to campus Film  screening,  discussion  will  focus on  race,  poverty

From  April  1,  2009  to  Jan.  1,  2013  there  have  been  218  drug  related  incidents  reported  by  po-­ lice  on  the  UW-­Whitewater  cam-­ pus.   The  War  on  Drugs  is  not  a  stranger  to  UW-­Whitewater  or Â

the  country.  Today,  there  are  more  people  behind  bars  for  nonviolent  drug  offenses  than  were  incarcer-­ ated  for  all  crimes  in  1970. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The  House  I  Live  Inâ&#x20AC;?  is  a  documentary  that  explains  the  seriousness  of  drug  abuse  as  a  PDWWHU RI SXEOLF KHDOWK 7KH Âż OP shows  how  the  faults  of  drug  use  are  attributed  to  a  matter  of  law  enforcement  rather  than  a  health  problem  that  is  affecting  the  poor,  especially  minorities.

Konrad  said  the  there  are  no  current  laws  that  d i s c r i m i n a t e  concerning  be-­ ing  rich,  poor,  black  or  white,  but  there  are  still  institutions  in  society  that  ef-­ Konrad fectively  do  this.   One  example  is  the  difference  between  crack  co-­ caine  and  power  cocaine.   â&#x20AC;&#x153;Crack  cocaine  tends  to  be  more  often  used  by  poor  people,  powder  cocaine  has  tended  to  be  used  by  more  wealthy  people,â&#x20AC;?  Konrad  said.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  chemically  the  exact  same  thing,  but  the  penal-­ ties  have  been  very  different.â&#x20AC;?

Gregory  Jeffers  a  sociology  professor  is  encouraging  all  of  his  students  to  attend  the  screen-­ ing  because  of  the  obvious  socio-­ logical  importance. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If  you  think  about  my  race  and  ethnic  relations  classes,  a  lot  of  sociologists  have  been  at-­ tempting  to  understand  what  ac-­ counts  for  contemporary  racial  inequalities,  â&#x20AC;?  Jeffers  said.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Even  after  we  passed  civil  rights  leg-­ islation  in  the  1960s  and  as  we  move  through  the  1970s,  we  end  up  seeing  that  poverty  rates  actu-­ ally  start  going  up  in  urban  black  communities.â&#x20AC;?

The  panel  will  feature  several  students,  faculty  members,  and  one  member  of  an  organization  who  helps  people  transition  from  the  criminal  justice  system  back  into  the  real  world.

According to entrepreneur-­ ship.com, micro-­loans can be used for furniture, equipment, machinery, inventory, supplies and working capital, but can not be used to pay existing debts.

Micro-­loans are usually admin-­ istered though private organi-­ zations, entrepreneurship.com stated.

The loans vary in size de-­ pending on what the business of-­ fers and what the student needs.

Fink said when the bank eval-­ uates a candidate for a loan, they look at their credit score, assets and collateral that can be used.

“For most student, they have not established credit yet and they don’t have enough collater-­ al,” Fink said. “They are starting out at the very foundation.”

Senior Justin Murphy is the chair of the chamber. Murphy said the micro-­loans will help student entrepreneurs who need funding to start their business.

The micro-­loans will assist stu-­ dents with growing their busi-­ nesses ideas while they are in college, as opposed to afterward, Murphy said.

Fink said money for the loans will come from donations re-­ ceived from alumni, local busi-­ nesses and membership dues.

The business or student en-­ trepreneur will have to apply through the chamber, and then they will have an interview with the chamber. The chamber then decides to approve or not ap-­ prove them for the loan. If they receive the loan, a payment plan will be de-­ termined.

Fink said the goal of the program is to help as many Murphy student entre-­ preneurs as possible.

“What is great about micro-­ loans is that they are self-­sustain-­ ing,” Fink said. “Every year we are going to receive more mem-­ bership dues and donations as well as the loans with the interest paid on them.”

Simply  by  skimming  the  posts  on  the  UW-­Whitewater  Confessions  Facebook  page,  it  is  easy  to  see  that  partying  at  our  school  causes  problems,  both  ethical  and  criminal.  Anonymous  users  post  confessions  to Â

the  page  about  people  stealing  things  from  houses  during  parties,  escaping  parties  just  DV WKH SROLFH DUULYH XQGHUDJH GULQNLQJ FL tations  and  drug  use.

While  attending  a  college  known  for  its  parties  might  seem  fun  and  exciting,  the  UHSXWDWLRQ WKLV EHKDYLRU HDUQV WKH FDPSXV DQG LWV VWXGHQWV LVQœW VR JUHDW Employers  pay  attention  to  where  ap-­ plicants  graduate  from,  and  schools  with  good  reputations  gain  respect.

Students  pay  thousands  of  dollars  a  year  to  attend  this  school,  presumably  be-­ cause  we  each  want  to  earn  a  degree  that  will  help  us  land  a  dream  job  after  gradu-­ ation.  After  we  take  off  the  cap  and  gown  and  step  out  into  the  real  world,  none  of  us  want  to  be  turned  down  for  a  great  oppor-­ tunity  because  of  a  stupid  mistake  we  made  during  what  we  thought  was  a  normal,  fun  night.  ,QVWHDG RI WDNLQJ SULGH LQ RXU XQLYHU VLW\œV SDUW\ VFHQH ZH VKRXOG EH SURXG RI the  programs  it  offers  and  the  academic  and  extracurricular  success  of  its  students.  $OO RI WKH LQGLYLGXDO FROOHJHV WKDW PDNH XS RXU XQLYHUVLW\ DUH FRQVWDQWO\ JURZLQJ LPSURYLQJ DQG KHOSLQJ VWXGHQWV DFKLHYH great  things.  Our  athletic  teams  are  frequently  win-­ ning  national  championships  and  our  indi-­ YXGDO DWKOHWHV ERDVW D QXPEHU RI KRQRUV

Best  Buddies  creates  lifelong  friendships

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  common  for  students  to  join  a  campus  organization  to  meet  new  friends,  but  some  students  on  campus  are  broad-­ ening  their  horizons  to  create  connections  in  the  community.  Best  Buddies  is  an  or-­ ganization  that  partners  students  with  adults  who  have  disabilities  to  create  friendships.   President  of  Best  Buddies,  junior  Sarah  Ouzounian  said  they  Ouzounian introduce  the  students  to  the  buddies,  and  the  friendships  grow  from  there.    â&#x20AC;&#x153;The  goal  is  to  be  lifelong  friends,â&#x20AC;?  she  said.  Ouzounian  has  had  the  same  buddy  all  three  years  since  she  has  been  involved  with  the  organization.    â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m  so  glad  weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve  been  friends  the  past  three  years,â&#x20AC;?  Ouzounian  said.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  honestly  what  keeps  me  wanting  to  make  this  organization  something  on  campus.â&#x20AC;?    Ouzounian  said  all  of  the  buddies  in  the  organization  are  genuine,  spirited  people,  and  her  buddy  thinks  of  her  as  her  best  friend.   Best  Buddies  partners  with  St.  Coletta  group  homes  in  Jefferson,  Wis.,  where  Best  Buddies  International  has  its  roots.     Rose  Kennedy  was  a  resident  at  St. Â

Asphyxiating  defense,  vicious  rebounding  and  tightknit  chem-­ istry  has  led  the  Warhawks  wom-­ enâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  basketball  team  to  focus  their  crosshairs  on  a  national  champion-­ ship.  The  â&#x20AC;&#x2122;Hawks  (25-­6),  ranked  No.  22  in  the  latest  d3hoops.com  top-­25  poll,  knocked  off  the  No.  10  Simpson  College  Storm  (27-­3)  and  the  No.  2  Hope  College  Lady  Dutch  (29-­2)  this  past  weekend  to  punch  their  tickets  to  the  Final  Four  in  Holland,  Mich.

â&#x20AC;&#x2122;Hawks fail to repeat Menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hoops

In  2012,  the  Warhawks  menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  basketball  team  set  what  head  coach  Pat  Miller  called  the  â&#x20AC;&#x153;gold  stan-­ dardâ&#x20AC;?  of  expectations  by  bringing  a  national  title  to  UW-­Whitewater.

This  season,  a  lack  of  rebound-­ ing  and  inconsistent  shooting  led  to  the  second-­round  defeat  of  the  Warhawks  at  the  hands  of  North  Central  College,  putting  an  end  to  the  â&#x20AC;&#x2122;Hawksâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;  goal  of  repeating  as  NCAA  Division  III  champions.

The  Cardi-­ nals,  ranked  No.  3,  according  to  d 3 h o o p s . c o m ,  EHDW WKH Âż IWK ranked  â&#x20AC;&#x2122;Hawks,  64-­60,  in  the  NCAA  tourna-­ Young ment  round  of  32. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  just  extremely  disappoint-­ ing,  because  this  team  has  made  so  much  progress  throughout  the  year,â&#x20AC;?  Miller  said.   â&#x20AC;&#x153;You  obviously  want  your  team  to  experience  suc-­ cess  and  make  a  deep  tournament  run.â&#x20AC;?

The  â&#x20AC;&#x2122;Hawks  were  riding  a  10-­ game  winning  streak  going  into  the  contest  against  the  Cardinals,  but  momentum  could  not  keep  the  larger,  more  physical  Cardinals  from  gaining  a  33-­21  advantage  in  rebounding.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;I  thought  we  played  hard,  and Â

North  Central  is  a  very  good,  very  physical  team,â&#x20AC;?  Miller  said.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;The  difference  in  our  game  was  our  in-­ ability  to  rebound  and  inconsistent  shooting,  which  have  been  themes  in  our  losses  all  year.â&#x20AC;?

Sophomore  guard  K.J.  Evans  came  off  of  the  bench  to  score  19  points.  Evans  made  eight  of  his  12  VKRWV EXW WKH Âś+DZNV Âż QLVKHG WKH game  shooting  only  43.8  percent.  Darnell  Harris  and  Quardell  Young  added  12  and  11  points,  respective-­ ly.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;I  donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  think  we  played  to  our  potential,â&#x20AC;?  Young  said.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;A  lot  of  ticky-­tack  fouls  were  called,  and  that  didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  let  us  play  to  our  poten-­ tial  on  defense.â&#x20AC;? :LWK WKLV ORVV WKH Âś+DZNV Âż Q ished  with  a  record  of  24-­5.  Going  into  the  NCAA  tournament,  the  â&#x20AC;&#x2122;Hawks  were  ranked  No.  5,  accord-­ ing  to  d3hoops.com.  Seven  of  the  last  10  national  champions  have  come  from  the  Midwest,â&#x20AC;?  Miller  said.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;The  power  in  D-­III  basketball  is  in  the  Mid-­ ZHVW VR \RX SOD\ Âż QDO IRXU RU elite-­eight  type  teams  in  the  second  round.â&#x20AC;?

The  loss  to  the  Cardinals  marks  the  end  of  the  careers  of  the  War-­ hawksâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;  three  seniors:  forward/cen-­ ter  Luke  Knoble,  guard  Spencer  Koepp  and  forward  Rory  Cotter.

Knoble  started  his  career  as  a  bench  player,  eventually  working  his  way  into  the  regular  rotation  as  a  sophomore.  This  year,  Knoble  started  every  game  for  the  â&#x20AC;&#x2122;Hawks,  scoring  10.5  points  per  game  and Â

hauling  in  3.6  rebounds  per  game. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Luke  has  a  great  work  ethic  and  is  a  great  student,â&#x20AC;?  Miller  said.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  not  a  vocal,  outward  leader  but  a  guy  who  leads  every  day  by  coming  in  and  working  as  hard  as  he  can.  I  think  itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  a  positive  to  have  someone  like  that  on  your  team.â&#x20AC;?

Miller  said  Knobleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  progres-­ sion  from  a  bench  player  to  a  sec-­ ondary  player  to  assuming  a  pri-­ mary  role  should  serve  as  a  great  example  to  the  younger  players  on  the  team  who  are  in  a  similar  situ-­ ation. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Knoble  was  one  of  those  players  that  wants  to  work  hard  every  day  no  matter  how  heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  feel-­ ing,  which  is  something  you  canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  teach,â&#x20AC;?  Young  said.

With  only  three  seniors,  the  â&#x20AC;&#x2122;Hawks  will  maintain  almost  the  entire  core  of  their  team.  Miller  said  the  team  was  talking  about  next  year  on  the  bus  ride  home  from  North  Central.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Next  year,  I  hope  our  team  gets  clicking  earlier  and  gets  that  progression  earlier,  so  we  can  stay  consistent  throughout  the  entire  season,â&#x20AC;?  Young  said.  Miller  said  the  â&#x20AC;&#x2122;Hawks  have  clearly  set  the  bar  because  of  their  continued  success  during  the  past  few  years.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Once  youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve  won  a  national  championship,  that  becomes  the  gold  standard,â&#x20AC;?  Miller  said.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve  got  a  lot  of  work  to  do  just  to  main-­ tain  where  weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re  at.â&#x20AC;?

The  Warhawks  menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  and  ZRPHQÂśV WUDFN DQG Âż HOG WHDPV competed  in  the  NCAA  Division  lll  Indoor  Track  and  Field  Cham-­ pionship  hosted  by  North  Central  College  in  Naperville,  Ill.  this  past  weekend.  After  solid  showings  from  both  teams,  the  two  squads  will  look  to  continue  their  momentum  in  the  outdoor  season.

On  the  menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  side,  senior  Marcus  Smith  placed  the  high-­ est  on  the  team,  ¿ QLVKLQJ LQ VHF ond  place  in  the  triple  jump.

Smith  regis-­ tered  a  score  of  Zaeske 50â&#x20AC;&#x2122;  4â&#x20AC;?,  just  shy  of  the  school  record  of  50â&#x20AC;&#x2122;  4.5â&#x20AC;?.  Junior  Cory  Zaeske  put  forth  a  strong  performance  during  the  Championships.  +H Âż QLVKHG WKLUG LQ WKH ORQJ jump  on  Friday,  and  he  felt  the  team  performed  to  its  expecta-­ tions. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I  personally  think  we  could  have  done  better  with  a  few  tweaks  here  and  there,  but  overall  Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m  very  proud  of  our  team  and  of  the  result  of  the  meet,â&#x20AC;?  Zaeske  said.

Zaeske  thinks  the  outdoor  season  will  be  more  advanta-­ geous  for  athletes  on  the  team  in  their  respective  events. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I  prefer  to  long  jump  out-­ doors  better  and  high  jump  in-­ doors  better,â&#x20AC;?  Zaeske  said.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;The  weather  can  really  affect  the  high  jump  if  itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  too  cold  or  too  rainy,  but  for  some  reason,  weather  just  doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  bother  me  in  long  jump  outdoors.â&#x20AC;?  â&#x20AC;&#x153;My  goal  as  an  individual  is  to  be  an  All-­American  in  both  events,  the  high  and  long  jump.  This  team  is  coming  together Â

very  nicely,  and  the  chemistry  is  great.  Top  three  in  the  nation  sounds  great,  and  isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  far  from  our  reach.â&#x20AC;?

Sophomore  Dawson  Miller  also  garnered  All-­American  hon-­ ors  in  the  mile.  Miller  narrowly  missed  making  nationals  last  year.

For  the  women,  sophomore  Lexie  Sondgeroth  and  junior  Melanie  Pilon  earned  All-­Amer-­ ican  honors  on  Friday.  Sondgeroth  took  second  in  the  long  jump  registering  a  score  of  19-­0.75.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;I  feel  I  performed  very  well,  and  I  am  VDWLVÂż HG ZLWK my  standings,â&#x20AC;?  Sondgeroth  said.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;I   [achieved  a  personal  record]  in  the  sixty  me-­ ter  even  though  Sondgeroth I  didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  make  the  ¿ QDOV ´ +HU VHFRQG SODFH Âż QLVK earned  her  repeat  All-­American  recognition  that  she  received  last  season.  Sondgeroth  is  looking  for-­ ward  to  outdoor  season,  and  she  has  a  list  of  goals  that  she  would  like  to  see  herself  and  the  team  accomplish  as  a  whole. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I  prefer  competing  outdoors  personally,  because  itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  a  much  better  environment  and  easier  I  feel,â&#x20AC;?  Sondgeroth  said.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;My  goals  I  have  for  outdoor  season  LV WR JHWWLQJ KLJKHU WKDQ Âż YH LQ conference  as  a  team.  I  have  set  a  goal  to  break  the  school  records  for  the  100,  200  and  long  jump.â&#x20AC;?

With  the  Warhawks  sending  eight  competitors  to  Cedar  Rapids,  Iowa  for  the  NCAA  Division  III  Wrestling  Championship  on  March  15  and  16,  head  coach  Tim  Fader  said  each  of  his  wrestlers  can  be  po-­ tential  national  champions. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If  we  wrestle  the  way  we  can  wrestle,  there  is  no  reason  why  we  couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  bring  that  national  champi-­ onship  back  to  Whitewater,â&#x20AC;?  Fader  said.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  what  weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve  been  working  for.  Winning  a  title  is  cer-­ tainly  one  of  my  goals.â&#x20AC;?

Football Warhawks  head  football  coach  Lance  Leipold  is  inter-­ viewing  for  the  head  coaching  position  at  Austin  Peay  Uni-­ versity  on  Thursday,  March  14.  Leipold  is  79-­6  at  UW-­White-­ water  and  has  won  four  Divi-­ sion  III  National  Champion-­ ships.  Austin  Peay  is  a  Football  Championship  Subdivision  program  that  is  a  member  of  the  Ohio  Valley  Conference.

Gymnastics The  Warhawks  gymnas-­ tics  team  won  its  third  WIAC  title  in  four  years  on  Saturday,  March  9.  The  â&#x20AC;&#x2122;Hawks  recorded  a  total  team  score  of  187.650,  which  is  the  eighth-­best  score  in  school  history.  Delina  Phillips  and  Allyse  Dieringer  became  conference  champions,  Phillips  on  the  vault  and  Dieringer  on  the  un-­ even  bars.  The  team  hosts  the  NCGA  National  Champion-­ ships  on  March  22  and  23.

If  someone  told  the  War-­ hawks  soccer  team  last  fall  they  would  get  to  travel  to  coach  Tony  Guinnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  home  in  Northern  Ireland,  they  might  not  have  be-­ lieved  it.  A  few  meetings  later,  the  trip  was  set  for  May  20  through  the  28.  Junior  de-­ fenseman  Kyle  Sundby,  who  traveled  to  Spain  with  the  â&#x20AC;&#x2122;Hawks  Guinn his  freshman  year,  said  the  team  is  thrilled  about  the  trip.    ³:KHQ ZH Âż UVW KHDUG DERXW the  opportunity  back  in  Janu-­ ary,  all  of  us  were  instantly  on  our  phones  calling,  texting,  see-­ ing  who  is  going,â&#x20AC;?  Sundby  said.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Now  weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve  had  some  meetings  talking  about  it,  every  time  we  get  more  and  more  excited.â&#x20AC;?

While  Northern  Ireland  shares  a  border  with  Ireland,  it  is  part  of  the  United  Kingdom  and  differ-­ ent  from  Ireland.

Guinn  admitted  the  trip  will  be  fun  for  him,  because  he  gets  to  return  to  his  home  country.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;The  athletic  side  of  it  is  just  the  culture  and  the  pas-­ sion,â&#x20AC;?  Guinn  said.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re  talk-­ ing  about  a  nation  that  eat,  sleeps  and  drinks  soccer,  so  if  we  can  manage  to  stay  in  a  game,  Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll  be  happy.â&#x20AC;?

Those  games  will  be  against  local  clubs,  but  Guinn  said  the  trip  is  not  just  about  soccer.  Guinn  hopes  the  trip  is  a  great  experience  that  inspires  his  players  to  one  day  travel  the  world  and  see  new  things  Sundby that  make  them  understand  the  world  better. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I  hope  that  I  encourage  in  them  that  they  want  to  travel  as  they  get  older  because  I  think  the  more  people  travel,  the  small-­ er  the  world  becomes  and  the  more  we  understand  each  other,â&#x20AC;?  Guinn  said.  Before  he  came  to  UW-­ Whitewater,  Guinn  had  a  suc-­ cessful  coaching  career  at  St.  Maryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  University  in  Minnesota  and  Western  Illinois  University.  ,Q KLV Âż UVW \HDU DV WKH FRDFK Guinn  led  the  Warhawks  to  an  8-­5-­3  record,  which  was  good  for  third-­place  in  the  WIAC.

One  of  the  things  that  players  like  about  Guinn  is  his  personal-­ ity. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The  greatest  thing  about  coach  Guinn  is  he  is  an  extreme-­ ly  personable  guy,â&#x20AC;?  Sundby  said.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;When  youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re  talking  about  soc-­ cer,  it  can  be  a  lot  of  business,  but  then  once  thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  over,  itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  just  a  great  conversation  to  have  with  him.â&#x20AC;?

Although  Guinn  does  not  have  dual-­citizenship,  the  trip  will  be  the  eighth  time  he  has  gone.

Guinn  said  he  loves  the  trip  because  he  believes  in  hands-­on  learning,  and  it  allows  him  to  show  his  players  what  another  part  of  the  world  is  like.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Obviously,  Ireland  has  a  great  tradition  of  soccer,â&#x20AC;?  Guinn  said.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  a  way  for  me  to  share  with  my  team  my  culture  and  soccer,  so  they  get  to  travel  to  a  different  place  in  a  world  with  some  of  their  best  friends,  play-­ ing  their  favorite  sport,  and  yet,  seeing  and  learning  a  great  deal  about  part  of  the  world.â&#x20AC;?  Along  with  meeting  Guinnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  family  and  visiting  some  of  his  IDYRULWH ORFDO Âż VK ÂľQÂś FKLS VKRSV the  team  will  tour  Dunluce  Castle  and  the  newly  built  Titanic  Mu-­ seum  in  Belfast.   One  of  the  sites  that  Guinn  re-­ ally  wants  the  team  to  experience  is  the  Antrim  Coast  in  northeast-­ ern  Northern  Ireland. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  a  place  that  I  honestly  , NQRZ WKH\ÂśOO VD\ WR PH Âľ+H\
