It’s  a  bird!  It’s  a  plane!  No,  it’s  Whitewater’s  2013  Hero-­themed  Homecoming.   It  celebrates  superhe-­ roes,  favorite  storybook  heroes  and  everyday  heroes.

The  biggest  difference  from  last  year  is  a  procedural  change  for  the  Residence  Halls.  Typically,  each  hall  would  have  to  participate  in  any  four  events  it  chooses.  This  year,  the  halls  had  a  choice  between  attending  Boxes  &  Walls  and  participating  in  Homecoming.    “There’s  been  a  huge  decline  in  the  number  of  events  res  halls  are  participating  in,  and  it  makes  me  sad  because  I  realized  how  involved  I  got  my  freshman  year  through  my  res  hall,�  said  Homecoming  chair  Catherine  Gangi.   “If  you  take  ad-­ vantage  of  Homecoming,  students  get  so  much  out  of  it  in  the  long  run.   You  get  to  make  new  friends,  have  new  experiences,  perform  and  com-­

pete  against  other  people.�

Despite  the  change,  the  Home-­ coming  Steering  Committee  selects  the  themes  and  the  philanthropic  event  as  well.   “This  year  we  spent  a  lot  of  time  and  educating  students  about  the  good  that  [a  K9  unit]  could  do  for  Whitewater,�  HSC  co-­adviser  Kim  Clarksen  said.  The  project  featured  a  Puppy  Playdate  on  Tuesday,  Oct.  22,  where  students  could  pay  $1.50  to  play  with  puppies  on  campus.  The  event  raised  $300  and  donated  $150  to  each  the  K9  fund  and  the  Rock  County  Hu-­ mane  Society.   “Since  last  spring,  the  commu-­ nity  has  been  raising  money,  and  they’ve  got  a  ways  to  go  yet,  so  anything  we  can  to  help  them  get  a  little  closer  is  a  good  thing,�  Clark-­ sen  said.  Although  Homecoming  has  new  components  each  year,  it  also  is  a  celebration  of  tradition,  including  the  production  of  variety  show,  para-­

da  and  spirit  rally.  HSC  Senior  Sa-­ mantha  Pick  who  has  been  involved  in  Homecoming  every  year  said  it  is  one  of  her  favorite  times  of  the  year.   “I  think  Homecoming  is  one  of  those  times  where  you’re  not  put  into  a  category  of  your  class,�  Pick  said.  “It’s  about  putting  everyone  to-­ gether  as  a  whole,  as  one  big  body  and  creating  that  bond  we  all  have.�

The  sense  of  community  reaches  farther  than  to  just  the  students  on  campus.  “Students  come  back  because  it’s  Homecoming,�  Clarksen  said.  “We  have  people  who  return  year  after  year,  students  who  stay  for  the  weekend  who  normally  wouldn’t,  because  we  have  these  fun  events  happening.�

Bags, bottles focus of Sustainability Day

In  the  push  to  go  green,  the  university  hosted  its  annual  Sustainability  Day  on  Wednesday,  Oct.  23.  Student  organizations  Student  Allied  for  a  Greener  Earth,  Earth  Initiative  and  Creative  Marketing  Unlimited  partnered  to  help  educate  students  and  faculty  on  the  importance  of  sustainable  living.  ³7DSSHG ´ D ¿ OP GHSLFWLQJ WKH HQYLURQ mental  implications  of  bottled  water,  was  shown  in  the  Summer’s  Auditorium,  and  an  electric  car  show  outside  the  university  bookstore  prominently  displayed  four  sus-­ tainable  engines.

Waldhuetter  said  the  underlying  mes-­ sage  of  sustainability  day  related  back  to  everyone  making  changes  for  the  better-­ ment  of  the  world. Move-­in day to see changes

A  change  in  the  move-­in  date  for  freshmen  will  cause  some  changes  on  campus  beginning  in  2014.

Freshmen  will  move  into  their  dorms  Sunday,  Aug.  31,  instead  of  the  usual  Thursday  date.  A  number  of  issues  brought  up  at  the  Oct.  23  Whitewater  Stu-­ dent  Government  meeting  by  UW-­ Whitewater  Provost  Beverly  Kop-­ per  made  this  change  necessary.  Some  students  would  move  in  on  Thursday  and  leave  to  go  back  home  Friday,  which  would  pre-­ vent  them  from  attending  weekend  events  that  UW-­Whitewater  had  spent  large  amounts  of  money  to  host,  Kopper  said.  Another  issue  was  because  the  move-­in  date  was  during  the  week,  some  parents  were  unable  to  be  there  to  help  their  child  move  into  the  dorms,  Kopper  said.  This  can  be  an  important  and  emotional  part  of  a  parent’s  life.  Fifth-­year  senior  and  elemen-­ tary  education  major  Sarah  Fisher  was  a  freshman  at  UW-­Whitewater  the  last  time  freshman  move-­in  day  was  on  a  Sunday.  Both  her  parents  were  able  to  attend,  and  it  allowed  the  event  to  be  an  emotionally  special  experi-­ ence  for  her  and  her  family,  Fisher  said.

Fisher  said  having  freshman  move-­in  day  on  a  Sunday  made  the  decision  of  whether  to  stay  at  school  for  the  orientation  and  wel-­

come  events  easy. “I  think  Sunday  would  work  be-­ cause  it  is  the  weekend,  so  there’s  probably  not  as  much  going  on,�  Fisher  said.  “Otherwise,  it’s  the  weekend  and  everybody  goes  home.�

Director  of  Residence  Life  Frank  Bartlett  said  some  other  un-­ derlying  issues  may  have  included  issues  with  alcohol  in  the  dorms.

Other  than  the  change  in  date,  d i f f e r e n c e s  around  campus  for  freshman  moving  in  should  be  miniscule,  Bartlett  said.  Orientation  and  welcome  Bartlett programs,  such  as  Club  U  Dub  Dub  and  the  Week  of  Welcome  will  still  be  held  and  will  be  pushed  back  to  Monday  or  Tuesday.  Student  volunteers  will  still  be  available  during  move-­in  periods  to  help  the  freshman  get  into  the  dorms  as  well.

Bartlett  said  as  with  any  campus  change,  some  problems  may  arise.

The  change  has  been  made  in  part  to  accommodate  parents  mov-­ ing  their  children  into  the  dorms   Putting  it  during  Labor  Day  week-­ end  may  prevent  some  parents  from  being  there  as  well. “When  we  had  openings  on  Wednesdays  and  Thursdays,  there  was  a  huge  turnout  of  parents,  so  clearly  that  was  very  doable,�  Bartlett  said.  “But  this  will  be  do-­ able  as  well.�

Assistant  Director  of  Residence  Life  Terry  Tumbarello  voiced  some  of  the  same  concerns. “It’s  my  belief  that  when  the  residence  halls  open,  the  university  has  to  open,â€?  Tumbarello  said.  “If  the  opening  is  on  Sunday,  we’re  go-­ LQJ WR QHHG RWKHU RIÂż FHV WR EH RSHQ as  well.â€?

Although  there  are  concerns,  WKH FKDQJH LQ GDWH ZLOO GHÂż QLWHO\ help  some  families,  Tumbarello  said. “Everyone’s  situation  is  so  vastly  different,â€?  Tumbarello  said.  “For  some  of  our  families,  coming  on  that  Sunday  will  be  much  easier  than  coming  in  during  the  week.â€?

Tumbarello  echoed  Bartlett’s  sentiment  that  the  main  goal  is  to  make  the  move-­in  process  better  for  everyone. “As  a  department,  Residence  Life  will  do  everything  in  our  pow-­ er  to  make  opening  2014  better  than  opening  2013,�  Tumbarello  said.

Makerspace opens doors to students

Do  you  know  of  a  place  where  creative  people  can  socialize  and  work  together  on  common  inter-­ ests?  Makerspace  is  that  place.  It  is  a  community  center  that  works  as  a  QRQ SURÂż W RUJDQL]DWLRQ JLYHV SHR ple  opportunities  to  socialize  and  work  together  on  mutual  interests.  Whitewater  Makerspace  Con-­ sultant  David  Buggs  describes  it  as  “a  social  club  where  people  come  together  and  share  their  knowledge  and  learn  things  so  that  they  are  able  to  make  and  do.â€?  Buggs  said  it  is  important  to  pass  on  the  knowledge  so  it  won’t  have  to  be  rediscovered  in  the  fu-­ ture.  He  also  has  offered  his  help  to  students  who  want  to  build  things  and  has  encouraged  them  to  come  to  Makerspace. “Makerspace  serves  as  a  com-­ munity  and  culture  more  so  than  just  a  resource  center  that  provides  material  things;Íž  it  serves  as  an  area  where  you  can  collaborate  with  oth-­ er  people.  It  helps  make  concepts  a  UHDOLW\ ´ IUHVKPDQ $XVWLQ .DGXOVNL said.  .DGXOVNL ZKR LV D SDUW RI WKH HQWUHSUHQHXUVKLS RUJDQL]DWLRQ CEO  said  his  organization  decided  to  have  its  weekly  meeting  at  Mak-­ erspace  to  expose  the  club  to  the  re-­ sources  that  are  available  there.   $ VPDOO JURXS RI 8: :KLWHZD ter  students  went  to  Makerspace  to  see  what  it  is  all  about.  Buggs  gave  everyone  the  introduction  to  what  Makerspace  is  and  showed  them  all  the  machinery  and  explained  its  uses.  He  demonstrated  some  of  the  machines  as  well.  They  have  things  like  3D  print-­ HUV &2 ODVHU HWFKHU VRXWK EHQG PDFKLQH ODYH DQG ZRRG ZRUNLQJ lave.  They  also  have  electronic Â

Black  History  Month,  Gay  and  Les-­ bian  Pride  Month,  Coming  Out  Day  and  National  Hispanic  Heritage  Month  are  just  a  few  of  the  select  holidays  promoting  a  particular  race  or  cultural  lifestyle.  Yet,  hate  crimes  still  permeate  our  cul-­ ture.  Last  year,  the  Sikh  Temple  in  Oak  Creek  was  the  scene  of  a  shooting  that  left  seven  dead  including  the  shooter,  a  white  supremacist.

Earlier  this  month,  a  Wisconsin  teen  was  jailed  after  harassing  a  gay  couple  with  anti-­gay  slurs  and  vandalizing  their  home  in  Racine.

It  seems  redundant  to  say  in  a  liberal  arts  university  that  knowledge  and  educa-­ tion  can  bring  about  acceptance  of  diverse  cultures.Yet  it  needs  repeating.

UW-­Whitewater  endured  several  re-­ ported  hate  crimes  in  2010.  Late  one  Sunday  night  in  Septem-­ ber  2010,  a  woman  wearing  a  “Legalize  Gays�  shirt  was  called  an  anti-­gay  slur  and  punched  in  the  face  by  one  of  two  male  as-­ sailants  while  walking  down  Tratt  Street.

In  November  of  that  year,  a  female  stu-­ dent  was  harassed  by  two  white  males  one  evening  while  walking  past  the  cemetery  near  Goodhue  Hall.  One  of  the  men  shoved  the  woman  into  the  fence,  pinned  her  there  and  made  crude  comments  about  her  sexual  orientation  be-­

fore  leaving  her.

The  next  day,  on  Monday,  Nov.  8,  three  cars  owned  by  African-­American  students  were  vandalized.  The  damage  included  slashed  tires  and  the  letters  “KKK�  spray  painted  on  the  cars.  Knowledge  is  power,  and  in  this  case,  such  knowledge  can  bring  a  greater  mea-­ sure  of  peace  between  diverse  groups  in  the  U.S. No  one  can  force  people  to  step  outside  their  comfort  zone  and  experience  diver-­ sity,  but  that  does  not  mean  opportunities  should  not  be  given.

One  such  opportunity  is  Boxes  and Â

Walls,  a  diversity  experience  meant  to  put  students  into  the  place  of  those  who  are  oppressed  or  the  objects  of  hate  speech  and  harassment,  was  developed  at  UW-­ Whitewater  in  1998  by  Residence  Life.  This  event  is  now  used  by  more  than  300  campuses  across  the  U.S.  The  event  already  has  taken  place  this  year,  but  it  will  be  presented  to  students  again  next  year.

Events  like  this  are  key  to  showing  stu-­ dents  what  it  is  like  to  receive  hate  for  be-­ ing  a  part  of  a  minority.

Students  can  explore  outside  their  com-­ fort  zones  on  their  own.  Opportunities  to Â

meet  people  and  explore  other  cultures  or  lifestyles  are  as  easy  as  speaking  to  a  stu-­ dent  organization  on  campus  and  meeting  people  of  diverse  cultures  and  lifestyles.

Groups  such  as  IMPACT,  a  group  for  LGBT  students  at  UW-­Whitewater,  or  the  African  Student  Association  for  students  of  African  heritage  are  some  of  the  groups  here  on  campus  students  can  speak  to.

UW-­Whitewater  promotes  accesibility  for  students  with  many  types  of  disability  such  as  paralysis,  blindness,  mental  disor-­ ders  and  more.

There  are  ample  opportunities  for  stu-­ dents  to  meet  with  students  with  different  disablities  and  learn  to  understand  what  their  lives  are  like.

If  history  has  shown  us  anything,  it’s  that  racial  and  cultural  bigotry  never  fully  disappears.  The  targets  just  change.

Knowledge  and  understanding  are  key  to  breaking  the  barriers  between  races  and  cultures  set  up  by  bigotry  and  fear.  To  curb  hatred,  students  and  faculty  must  not  only  observe  diversity;͞  they  must  be  active  participants  throughout  their  lives.  By  stepping  out  of  their  comfort  zones,  members  of  the  UW-­Whitewater  commu-­ nity  can  gain  positive  new  experiences  and  broaden  their  horizons  by  getting  to  know  individuals  from  different  backgrounds.  rp@uww.edu

The number is 30,090. This is the number of deaths in the United States from prostate and testicular cancer to date in 2013, according to Cancer.gov. Today, there are 246,510 total cases between these two types of can-­ cer. UW-­Whitewater’s fraternity Alpha Sigma Phi is try-­ ing to make an impact on these numbers with a unique approach: by growing mustaches.

Alpha Sigma Phi joined up with the organization Movember to promote awareness of men’s health and to raise funds for the organization. According to the Movember website, “Movember encourages men to join the movement by growing a moustache for the 30 days of November.

“After registering on Movember.com, these generous Mo Bros start the month clean-­shaven, then grow and groom their Mo (slang for moustache), asking friends and family to donate to their efforts. With their new moustaches, these Mo Bros bring much-­needed aware-­ ness to men’s health issues by prompting conversations wherever they go.”

Last year, Movember raised $147 million worldwide with its movement. Alpha Sigma Phi and its members at UW-­Whitewater raised $1,100 last year and say they hope to improve on that number. Alpha Sigma Phi’s President John Jensen said the fraternity’s goal for this Movember is to raise $2,000.

“We are going to table in the UC asking for dona-­ tions with selling baked goods,” Jensen said. “We are also asking our family and friends to donate, and this is where a bulk of our money comes from.”

The group of guys will make cook-­ ies and other goodies in the shape of mustaches and will give them out in the University Center to those who donate to their cause as they did last year.

The fraternity became involved with the organization a year ago. The idea came from its former recruitment director Ryan Kolter, who is now the coordinator of ex-­ pansion and growth at Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity, Inc. Vice President Kyle Morris said Alpha Sigma Phi

started participating in Movember in 2012.

“We also had a relationship with the UW-­W TOMS Campus Club, who were participating in Movember,” Morris said. “We paired up with them to maximize our efforts, which turned out to be pretty successful we believe.”

“We understand we won’t make a fortune off just baking cookies, but every dollar helps out,” said Mitch-­ ell Lemke, Alpha Sigma Phi member. “Most of the money comes from family and friends that want to see us have a dirty mustache. It’s really not the easiest thing to follow through with, but it is well worth it in the end when you step back and think about what you’re doing it for. It all goes back to our fraternity’s value of being charitable, not just with your money, but with your time and efforts. Even if that means looking weird for 30 days out of the year.”

Witches  of                 Whitewater

The  truth  behind  the  legend

You’ve  probably  heard  the  hor-­ ror  stories  or  seen  the  eerie  movie  trailer  about  the  infamous  “Witches  of  Whitewater.�  Although  it  is  hard  to  say  what  is  true  about  the  local  tales,  during  this  time  of  year  you  can’t  help  but  get  a  dark  and  creepy  feeling.

The  urban  legend  of  the  witches  and  spiritual  happenings  began  in  the  late  19th  century,  leading  Whitewa-­ ter  to  become  known  as  the  “Second  Salem.�

It  is  said  that  the  tales  began  around  1889,  when  the  Morris  Pratt  Institute  was  built  in  town.  The  In-­ stitute  was  known  for  teaching  spiri-­ tualism,  which  was  a  popular  belief  during  the  1800s,  and  regular  lectures  were  given  on  psychic  subjects  and  paranormal  activities.  It  is  said  the  building  had  an  “all-­whiteâ€?  room  that  was  used  to  conduct  sĂŠances.   “That’s  probably  the  spookiest  thing  in  Whitewater,  the  old  Morris  Pratt  school,â€?  said  Karen  Weston,  a  UW-­Whitewater’s  archivist  of  27  years.

The  school  functioned  for  about  40  years  until  it  was  turned  into  a  WHOHSKRQH RIÂż FH ,Q WKH LQVWLWXWH was  moved  to  Milwaukee  where  it  still  exists  today.  :KDW PDQ\ SHRSOH Âż QG LQWULJXLQJ is  the  story  about  a  locked  book  in  the  special  collections  section  in  the  base-­ ment  of  Anderson  Library.  Rumors  say  that  the  dark  contents  of  the  book  have  driven  three  students  and  a  professor  to  kill  themselves.  According  to  legend,  one  person  who  borrowed  the  book  was  locked  in  a  mental  institution.  Because  of  this,  the  book  is  not  hidden  under  lock  and  key Â

at  the  Anderson  Library.  If  you  ask  to  see  the  book,  you  will  be  expelled,  or  so  they  say. “The  only  locked  book  we  own  is  actually  a  Catholic  hymnal,â€?  Weston  said.  “We  think  the  stories  about  it  come  from  the  fact  that  up  until  1989,  100  years  after  the  Morris  Pratt  In-­ stitution  was  founded,  the  storage  we  used  for  the  book  was  a  locked  cage  because  it’s  the  only  storage  unit  we  had.  A  locked  book  in  special  collec-­ tions  got  this  image  of  being  danger-­ ous.  However,  none  of  the  people  who  have  ever  talked  about  this  Catholic  hymnal  have  given  us  a  publisher,  a  title,  an  another,  no  date,  nothing.â€?  It  is  unknown  if  the  mysterious  book  remains  unlabeled  for  a  reason  or  for  a  coincidence.  Adding  to  the  town’s  eeriness,  Whitewater’s  three  cemeteries  have  something  unusual  about  them: Calvary  Cemetery,  which  sits  on  the  northern  edge  of  campus,  Oak  Grove  Cemetery,  located  up  on  a  hill  near  next  to  the  Washington  Elemen-­ tary  School  on  the  east  side  of  town,  and  Hillside  Cemetery  adjacent  to  Cravath  Lake,  are  positioned  in  the  shape  of  a  perfect  isosceles  triangle.  Legend  has  it  that  the  “triangleâ€?  can  be  connected  to  witchcraft.  ³7KHUH ZDV D FRIÂż Q RI D OLWWOH JLUO mysteriously  put  on  campus  back  in  1970  during  Halloween  week.  People  think  it  was  taken  from  one  of  these  local  cemeteries,â€?  Weston  said.

Oak  Grove  Cemetery  is  said  to  be  WKH ¿ QDO UHVWLQJ SODFH RI D[H WRWLQJ murderess  Mary  Worth.  On  Hallow-­ een  Eve,  legend  says  that  Mary  can  be  spotted  among  the  tombstones.

But  the  haunting  stories  continue  about  this  small  Midwestern  town  including  one  about  the  stone  water Â

tower  in  Starin  Park.  Stories  say  that  witches  would  sur-­ round  the  tower  at  night,  performing  rituals  in  the  park.  An  iron  fence  was  put  up  around  the  tower  with  the  barbed  wired  spikes  pointed  inward  as  if  it  was  trying  to  keep  something  in,  rather  than  keep  people  out.

The  tower  sits  just  south  of  Wells  Hall,  which  also  has  been  said  to  have  had  many  hauntings  since  it  was  built  WKH ODWH V Wells  Hall  is  not  the  only  student  housing  that  has  had  questioning  stories.  In  1981,  the  girls  of  the  Alpha  Sigma  sorority  heard  loud  noises  coming  from  the  basement  while  they  ate  dinner.  Bricks  of  the  basement  À RRU ZHUH IRXQG VFDWWHUHG HYHU\ where  when  they  went  to  check  it  out,  revealing  a  never  before  seen  tunnel  entrance.

The  story  says  that  the  tunnel  system  was  used  by  witches  as  a  way  of  traveling  between  the  town’s  oldest  mansion-­sized  homes  without  being  spotted  by  the  civilians.

The  most  recent  story  about  the  witches  took  place  in  1992  when  three  students  witnessed  a  late-­night  ritual  on  the  beach  near  Whitewater  Lake,  watching  the  ritual  until  it  appeared  as  if  a  huge  object  was  coming  out  of  the  lake.  As  time  passes,  the  stories  become  more  unusual  and  persistent,  and  although  they  are  all  undocumented  and  extremely  vague,  they  do  a  good  job  of  keeping  their  creepiness  factor  haunting  students  year  after  year.

Helping those in need Students’  project EHQH¿ WV ORFDO food  pantry

Students  in  all  residence  halls  on  campus  will  have  a  chance  to  give  back  to  the  community  during  The  Hunger  Games  Food  Drive  competition  that  runs  through  Nov.  25.

The  food  drive  is  between  the  east  and  west  residence  halls.  All  food  donations  are  going  to  the  lo-­ cal  Whitewater  food  pantry,  and  the  winning  complex  will  receive  a  free  pizza  party  on  Dec.  2.   A  box  where  students  can  drop  off  non-­perishable  food  items  dur-­ ing  normal  front  desk  hours  will  be  located  in  every  residence  hall. Whitewaterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  own  â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Pitch  Perfectâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Â&#x201E; Vocal  jazz  ensemble Â

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Pitch  Perfectâ&#x20AC;?  may  have  made  it  cool  on  the  big  screen,  but  a  cap-­ pella  performances  are  nothing  new  to  the  collegiate  music  scene  in  the  U.S.  and  Canada.

Once  seen  only  as  a  traditional  form  of  gospel  choir  music,  the  art  of  a  cappella  has  made  a  grand  entrance  in  popular  performance  music  at  a  college  campus  level,  with  groups  such  as  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Straight  No  Chaserâ&#x20AC;?  catapult-­ ing  to  stardom,  from  a  college  group  beginning  in  1996  to  ap-­ VanAlstine pearing  on  the  Today  Show  in  2008.  Recognizing  this  surge  of  in-­ terest  for  a  cappella  performances,  UW-­Whitewaterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  SEAL  organi-­ zation  brought  the  a  cappella  group  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Kazualâ&#x20AC;?  to  the  Down  Under  on  Oct.  17.  Yet,  some  may  not  know  UW-­ Whitewater  already  has  its  own  a  cappella  jazz  ensemble.  With  a  modern,  fun  repertoire,  the  ensembleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  style  ranges  from  jazz  to  pop  to  Broadway-­esque  performances.  For  those  interested  in  seeing  UW-­Whitewaterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  take  on  an  a  cappella  performance,  the  group Â

will  perform  alongside  the  Cham-­ ber  Singers,  a  classical  choral  group  at  UW-­Whitewater,  at  3  p.m.  on  Sunday,  Nov.  3,  in  the  Light  Re-­ cital  Hall.  The  group  consists  of  17  sing-­ ers,  which,  for  a  jazz  ensemble,  is  a  relatively  small  group. Âł,WÂśV GHÂż QLWHO\ D GLIIHUHQW VW\OH than  what  Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve  been  accustomed  to  in  the  past,â&#x20AC;?  said  Dr.  Sharri  VanAl-­ stine,  jazz  ensemble  director.   â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  fun  to  work  with  small  groups  like  this,  too  because  they  really  have  to  work  together  and  depend  upon  each  other.â&#x20AC;?  VanAlstine  has  been  directing  the  group  for  the  past  two  years.

Vocalist  and  ensemble  mem-­ ber  Makenna  Parish  Day  said  she  thinks  sing-­ Parish Day ing  with  a  smaller  group  contributes  to  the  fun. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You  get  to  know  everybody,  and  you  get  closer,  too,â&#x20AC;?  Parish  Day  said.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  kind  of  a  family.â&#x20AC;?

The  contemporary  and  upbeat  vibe  the  group  exhibits  is  made  possible  by  the  talent  of  the  jazz  ensembleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  members.  And  not  just  anyone  can  become  a  member.  The  performers  went  through  an  audition  process  comprised  of  sight-­reading,  aural  skills  and  a  solo. Âł7KH\ÂśUH YHU\ SURÂż FLHQW DQG they  enjoy  what  theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re  doing,â&#x20AC;?  VanAlstine  said.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;So  itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  a  great  experience  all  around.â&#x20AC;?

Before  I  get  into  this  review,  let  me  put  in  one  disclaimer:  vampires  are  overplayed.  I  dislike  all  the  vampire  books,  movies  and  T.V.  shows  that  have  come  out  in  the  last  couple  years.  Having  said  that,  I  absolutely  love  â&#x20AC;&#x153;The  Originals,â&#x20AC;?  a  new  series  on  the  CW  that  is  fo-­ cused  on  a  family  of  vampires.

Yes,  I  know,  I  just  contradicted  myself.  But  in  my  defense,  â&#x20AC;&#x153;The  Originalsâ&#x20AC;?  is  a  spinoff  of  the  series  â&#x20AC;&#x153;The  Vampire  Diaries,â&#x20AC;?  which  be-­ gan  in  2009,  only  a  year  after  those  awful  books  about  sparkling  vam-­ pires  were  turned  into  movies.  So  I  consider  my  love  for  â&#x20AC;&#x153;The  Origi-­ nalsâ&#x20AC;?  completely  warranted.

Taking  place  in  New  Orleans,  ³7KH 2ULJLQDOV´ IROORZV WKH Âż UVW vampires  ever  created,  three  sib-­ lings  who  were  turned  into  immor-­ tal  beings  more  than  2,000  years  ago.  In  this  reality,  all  vampires  are Â

traced  back  to  the  original  family,  which  was  turned  by  the  mother  of  the  Mikaelson  family,  a  witch  ZKR GLG QRW ZDQW WR ORVH KHU ¿ YH children.  Now,  only  three  remain:  Elijah,  Niklaus  and  Rebekah.

While  the  majority  of  the  groupâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  performances  are  com-­ pletely  rehearsed,  a  goal  for  the  ensemble  is  to  improve  its  ability  to  improvise,  VanAlstine  said.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  not  something  that  vocalists  do  very  often,â&#x20AC;?  VanAls-­ tine  said.   â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  something  that  weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve  been  working  hard  on.â&#x20AC;?

Parish  Day  said  performing  in  front  of  large  audiences  may  seem  intimidating,  but  as  a  group,  stage  fright  is  not  an  issue. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You  get  to  hang  with  all  your  friends  on  stage,â&#x20AC;?  Parish  Day  said.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re  able  to  interact  with  them.  Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  amazing.â&#x20AC;?

Now,  in  â&#x20AC;&#x153;The  Originals,â&#x20AC;?  the  three  remaining  original  vampires  develop  even  more;Íž  they  are  an  es-­ tranged  family  attempting  to  come  together  again.  Niklaus,  known  more  popu-­ larly  by  Klaus,  is  played  by  Joseph  Morgan  (â&#x20AC;&#x153;Immortalsâ&#x20AC;?).  The  vam-­ pire/werewolf  hybrid  is  back  in  the  city  he  helped  create  almost  200  years  ago.  Since  he  left  New  Orleans,  Klausâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;  prodigy,  Marcel,  has  taken  over  and  made  himself  king  of  the  city.  Marcel  is  in  control  of  all  the  vampires,  kills  any  witch  who  uses  magic  and  has  run  all  the  were-­ wolves  out  of  town.  Klaus  is  im-­ mediately  jealous  of  the  power  that  is  no  longer  his  and  has  vowed  to  take  it  back  by  destroying  Marcelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  world  from  the  inside.

Elijah  is  the  oldest  of  the  sib-­ lings  and  works  tirelessly  to  keep  what  is  left  of  his  family  together. Â

Klaus  is  expecting  a  child  with  another  werewolf,  Hayley.  Vampires  are  unable  to  have  children,  but  apparently  Klausâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;  werewolf  side  makes  this  â&#x20AC;&#x153;miracle  babyâ&#x20AC;?  possible.  While  Klaus  wanted  nothing  more  than  to  dispose  of  his  unborn  FKLOG DW Âż UVW (OLMDK FRQYLQFHG Klaus  that  this  baby  was  their  chance  to  be  a  family  again.  As  for  Rebekah,  the  youngest  of  the  three,  picture  a  teenager  who  falls  in  love  too  easily  and  goes  crazy  when  guys  donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  love  her  back.  Add  heightened  feelings  and  2,000  years  of  angst,  and  you  have  Rebekah  Mikaelson.  Although  her  petty  attitude  can  be  annoying,  her  compassion  toward  Elijah  and  her  developing  friendship  with  Hayley  PDNHV LW GLIÂż FXOW WR EH WRR KDUG RQ her.  Rebekah  just  wants  to  love  and  be  loved;Íž  sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  just  having  a  GLIÂż FXOW WLPH JHWWLQJ WKHUH

Âł7KH 2ULJLQDOV´ LV Âż YH HSL sodes  in,  and  this  show  does  not  disappoint.  The  fact  that  these  characters  have  already  been  de-­ veloped  allows  them  to  dive  right  into  the  story  without  wasting  too  much  time  with  a  back-­story.  However,  if  you  didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  watch  â&#x20AC;&#x153;The  Vampire  Diaries,â&#x20AC;?  you  can  eas-­ ily  jump  into  this  show.  You  just  wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  know  quite  as  much  of  the  familyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  complicated  history.

After  an  undefeated  fall  sea-­ son,  the  Warhawks  womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  ten-­ nis  team  won  another  title  Sun-­ day,  edging  out  UW-­Lacrosse  for  its  7th  consecutive  WIAC  Cham-­ pionship.  This  past  weekend,  the  team  traveled  to  Madison,  Wisc.,  to  compete  in  the  WIAC  Champi-­ onship,  where  they  entered  as  the  favorites  at  almost  every  position  in  the  lineup.

Leading  up  to  the  WIAC  Championship,  the  â&#x20AC;&#x2122;Hawks  had  won  all  10  of  their  dual  meets.  The  â&#x20AC;&#x2122;Hawks  dominated  the  WIAC,  only  dropping  two  match-­ es  altogether  in  conference  play.  W o m e n â&#x20AC;&#x2122; s  head  coach  Frank  Barnes  said  he  was  a  little  surprised  this  yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  team  Barnes turned  out  to  be  so  dominant. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We  only  had  three  players  who  had  played  in  this  tourna-­

ment  last  year,â&#x20AC;?  Barnes  said.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our  starting  lineup  was  almost  all  new.â&#x20AC;?

It  had  been  nearly  two  years  since  the  UW-­Oshkosh  Titans  lost  at  home,  but  on  Saturday,  the  UW-­ Whitewater  football  team  put  an  end  to  the  Titansâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;  streak,  winning  17-­14.

Entering  the  game,  the  War-­ hawks  were  ranked  No.  7  by  D3foot-­ ball.com,  while  the  Titans  came  in  ranked  No.  9.  After  the  â&#x20AC;&#x2122;Hawksâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;  three-­point  victory,  the  team  is  now  ranked  No.  6  nationally.

The  game  made  for  an  interest-­ ing  one  statistically  and  was  ulti-­ mately  a  game  of  two  halves.  The  Titans  recorded  seven  drives  in  the  ¿ UVW KDOI DQG WRWDOHG \DUGV RI RI fense  but  only  mustered  14  points  on  the  scoreboard.  For  the  â&#x20AC;&#x2122;Hawks,  a  lot  of  yardage  was  gained  on  their  seven  drives,  but  like  the  Titans,  points  came  at  a  SUHPLXP 2XWVLGH RI D \DUG Âż HOG goal  by  senior  Eric  Kindler,  the  team  was  just  able  to  score  once.

The  UW-­Whitewater  menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  and  womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  swimming/diving  teams  began  their  seasons  with  wins  over  Carthage  College  on  Saturday  in  Kenosha,  Wis.  Both  teams  are  look-­ ing  forward  to  a  successful  2013-­14  season.

Men The  menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  team  defeated  Car-­ thage  College,  150-­112,  winning  nine  of  16  events.  The  team  took  the  top  three  spots  in  two  events  and  the  top  four  spots  in  one  event.

Seniors  John  Devroy  and  Ben  Wynn  and  sophomore  Anthony  Hei-­ lberger  took  the  top  three  spots  in  the  \DUG EXWWHUĂ&#x20AC; \ )UHVKPHQ $OH[ Gidlow  and  Josh  Kanute  and  junior  Ryan  Stuart  repeated  the  result  in  the  100-­yard  freestyle.  The  â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Hawks  continued  to  domi-­ nate  the  pool  in  the  200-­yard  back-­ stroke.  Junior  Joe  Devroy,  senior  Devroy,  freshman  Dan  Bielski,  and  junior  Jake  Shackelford  took  the  top  four  spots.

Spaay  went  to  the  swimming  and  diving  national  championships  last  year  and  won  the  100  and  200-­ yard  breaststroke.  As  a  sophomore,  she  was  the  ¿ UVW VZLPPHU LQ 8: :KLWHZDWHU history  to  win  an  event  at  the  NCAA  Championships.
