Cancún and the Riviera Maya are a turquoise and white dreamland, but did you know that they are also a golfing paradise with their fair share of world-class courses?

Australian golf legend Greg Norman designed El Camaleón Golf Club at Mayakoba cleverly intermingling fairways and greens with the Maya jungle, lush mangroves and the Caribbean coastline. During your round, you will come across clear freshwater canals, cenotes (sinkholes), limestone walls and breathtaking ocean views.

History was made at El Camaleón when it became home to the Mayakoba Golf Classic, the first PGA Tour event to ever be hosted outside the United States and Canada. Every year in November, it welcomes 132 of the best players in the world who compete for a purse of $7.2 million dollars.

The golf club is famous for offering royal treatment and high-end amenities such as carts with leather seats, GPS and a screen with maps, photos and information on every hole. In keeping with the new safety measures, every player receives a health kit with a reusable face mask, hand sanitizer and wipes.

At El Camaleón, you can play where the champions play, but if you need to brush up on your golf skills, you can head out to the practice range, or book a session at the renowned Jim McLean Golf School, which offers you the personalized and top-notch instruction you need to up your game.

It’s time to hit the fairway! Your round will begin with a very intimidating straightway 438-yard par 4 that plays slightly downhill; it can offer a generous tee shot, unless it plays into the prevailing ocean breeze.

At Hole 2, you are faced with an intimidating tee shot with the course’s first mangroves lining both sides of the fairway. The 428-yard par 4 features a slight dogleg that plays left to right, and right into the wind. Any shot that does not land on green grass is most likely to be lost in the lush mangroves.

The fourth hole is a tricky and short par 3 measuring only 116 yards, and plays straight into the strong Caribbean breeze. You must keep the ball down and out of the wind, or you will send it directly towards the beach. This hole affords the first views of the Caribbean and the island of Cozumel.

One of the course’s most beautiful holes is the 554-yard par-5 No. 7. Here, you need to hit a pretty good tee shot while managing to avoid the cavern and cenote that sit right in the middle, and which provide you with a great target for your drive. The green sits left to right, and is guarded by bunkers on both sides. If you are a long hitter, there is a good chance for a birdie.

As you approach the end of the second nines, you will reach the signature hole, the picture-perfect, 155yard par-3 15th Hole, which runs along the Caribbean shoreline. While you enjoy unparalleled views of Cozumel and the pristine beach, you must remember to control your ball flight’s trajectory and loft. This tricky green sits atop a natural dune and is guarded by a single bunker on its front left side. Par is a good score, and don’t forget to take out your camera!

After enjoying a good round at El Camaleón, you may want to try out Puerto Cancún, Playa Mujeres and Gran Coyote courses, all offering special rates. If you are in a competitive mood, you can participate in the Royal Resorts Golf Tournaments during the week at Playa Mujeres, Puerto Cancún and El Camaleón. A minimum number of players is required for the tournament to take place, so please contact the Golf Reservations Center for more information.
