La mayoría de nosotros estamos familiarizados con la frase “La Tormenta Perfecta”, un estado de cosas particularmente malo o crítico, que surge de una serie de factores negativos e impredecibles. En la mayoría de los casos, una tormenta perfecta no se puede recrear, incluso si se intenta, debido a la aleatoriedad de los eventos imprevistos. THE MAGIC BEHIND THE CURTAIN

A principios del año pasado, cuando se enfrentaron con una decisión de qué hacer con un local de alquiler vacante en la propiedad, la administración del resort y la junta directiva tomaron una decisión “lista para usar” que resultó ser increíblemente exitosa y rentable para el complejo y sus propietarios: una nueva y hermosa adición al ya grandioso Costa Linda Beach Resort llamado Suites Frangipani.

Most of us are familiar with the phrase The Perfect Storm, a particularly bad or critical state of affairs, arising from a number of negative and unpredictable factors. In most cases, a perfect storm can’t be re-created, even if one tries, due to the randomness of the unforeseen events. So what do we call the opposite of a perfect storm? Luck? Well, as Costa Linda Beach Resort Board President Gale Measel Jr. wrote in his letter to the owners, it’s really a combination of “luck and hard work” when referring to the optimal state of affairs of the CLBR property. And optimal it is, with Costa Linda Beach Resort being one of the top timeshare demands in the industry. But, I must add another trait to that magical list - great decision making. Early last year, when faced with a decision of what to do with a vacant rental locale on the property, the resort management and board of directors made an “out-of-the-box” decision that’s proven to be incredibly successful and profitable for the resort and its owners -- a beautiful new addition to the already magnificent Costa Linda Beach Resort called The Frangipani Suites. Knowledge culled from the design feedback received over the years was incorporated into the new build. Five complete villas in total were created, two with two-bedrooms and three with threebedrooms, split into a total of ten separate units due to the “lock-off” design. And there was another well thought out bonus... the ability to have all five units grouped together with adjoining doors.

After a historic auction for pre-construction sales and a rapid follow-up sell through, sales in these five new luxury suites have topped the $5.1 million mark. That’s $400,000 above the original sales goal of $4.7 million. A project that was estimated to take three years, has sold 85% of its 255 available weeks in just under a year! Not only did the rapid sales finance the entire project, it’s allowing for CLBR to keep annual maintenance fee increases to a minimum. It’s also generated a significant amount of money to help pay for the purchase of new furniture for the entire resort. With additional maintenance fees from the new additions, the prognosis for the sustainability of this 26 year old resort is looking excellent indeed.

There are not many resorts that can boast this kind of success. A strong owner representation in the CLBR board of directors, combined with a successful and seasoned timeshare management team are key components to this recipe. Hard work, good decision making, along with a sprinkle of luck, and you’ve got yourself a magical combination. It’s no wonder people keep buying into Costa Linda Beach Resort. Better hurry though if you want to experience the stunning new Frangipani Suites, because they’re nearly sold out. They are only steps away from the pool and ocean, equipped with a large patio/garden, Jacuzzi and built-in gas grill/beverage center on a private terrace with a water wall. The one bedroom lockouts have a small but well-equipped kitchen and separate entrance which allows for extra rental income or use by family members or friends. HIT THE BEACH

Costa Linda is located on Eagle Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches on Aruba. Safe and sheltered, its cool white sands, shallow waters and plentiful shade make it ideal for children and it is also popular with local families. Shade huts, sun loungers and beach chairs are available on a first come first serve basis for the use of registered Costa Linda members and guests from 7:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Remember to take all your belongings with you when you leave the beach. You’ll find a complete list of beach and pool rules in the Resort tips section of this magazine, please take a few moments to read them. Eagle Beach is a public beach and there are no lifeguards so you swim at your own risk.

Spend hours of watery fun in the resort pool enjoying organized activities such as volleyball and pool aerobics or simply relax pool side and cool off in the Jacuzzis after your sunbathing session. Small children will love the kids pool. It is suitable for tots up to six years old. Pool and Jacuzzi hours are from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Please abide by the pool rules and help us keep the pool area clean.

After swimming and splashing in the kids pool, take the little ones to the beachfront play area designed specifically for them. The kids play gym is suitable for children under the age of 12 and there are a variety of complimentary events during the week.

FITNESS CENTER

Keep up with your daily workout at the Fitness Center where you’ll find a variety of exercise machines to help you stay in shape. The gym staff is on hand to help you and provide for your every need. Please wear proper attire: shirt, shorts and sneakers. Youths under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. The minimum age for the Gym is 15 years old. The Gym is located beside the elevator landing (A-B Wing) on the lobby level and is open daily from 7 a.m. – 8 p.m.

SUN TIPS

It is easy to get carried away when sunbathing at the beginning of your vacation, especially if you are from a cold northern climate. Don’t overdo it, painful sunburn will spoil your fun. Take care and always use sun block with the SPF (at least 15) suitable for your skin type. Choose environmentally friendly sun products and apply regularly after going in the water.

ACTIVITIES FOR ALL

Have we got a week of fun lined up for you! Join in the activities organized for adults and children during the week. There’s something different every day ranging from pool and beach games to arts and crafts, bingo and live steel band music for adults. Keep the children busy with jewelry making, finger painting and sand castles, a tug of war and a scavenger hunt on the beach.

If you are going snorkeling it is a good idea to wear a T-shirt. The hottest time of the day is between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., and remember that you can still get burnt even when it is cloudy or breezy.

Activities are subject to change and for a complete line up, check the activities board located adjacent to the Tour Desk in the lobby entrance, or visit the Activities booth below the kiddies pool, Ext. 7224.

TIPS PARA TOMAR EL SOL

GIMNASIO

Es muy fácil broncearse al inicio de sus vacaciones, en especial si usted viene de un clima frío. Evite sobrexponerse al sol, tome sus precauciones y use protector solar con FPS (por lo menos 15) según su tipo de piel. Elija productos que no dañen el ambiente y aplíquelo de manera frecuente después de nadar.

Continúe con su rutina diaria de ejercicios en el gimnasio donde encontrará un equipo completo para ejercitarse y mantenerse en forma. El personal del gimnasio le atenderá y le proveerá de todo lo que usted necesite. Favor de usar ropa deportiva: playera, short y tenis. Los jovenes menores de 18 años de edad deben estar acompañados por un adulto. La edad mínima para acceder al gimnasio es de 15 años. El gimnasio se encuentra a un lado del elevador (Ala A-B) en el lobby y abre diario de 7 a.m. a 8 p.m.

Si va a esnorquelear le recomendamos usar una playera. El sol está más intenso entre las 11 a.m. y las 2 p.m., así que protéjase aunque esté nublado o haya viento.

GETTING YOUR BEARINGS

Challenge your friends to a game. There are two lighted tennis courts located to the south of the main entrance of the resort. Court hours are from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. You may use the courts for one hour a day. Free tennis lessons see daily schedule. Reservations can be made at the front desk or call Ext. 7202

OCCUPANCY LIMITS The maximum number of persons allowed per unit is six (6) in the two-bedroom suite and a maximum of eight (8) in the supreme suite (three-bedroom).

Furthermore, situations sometimes occur as a result of miscommunication or human error. Accidents will happen. Rather than expecting some form of complimentary compensation, a sincere apology from Front Desk personnel should suffice. Guests who insist upon complimentary compensation for inconvenience or honest mistakes must understand and accept the difference between hotel and Resort Management. Unlike hotels, Costa Linda Beach Resort is nonprofit. Owner dues cover operating expenses only. There are no funds to cover free dinners, extra nights, or gifts. The cost of such compensatory awards would come directly from owner dues.

Named after a wooden sailing ship known as The SS California which sank off its coast in the early 1890s, the lighthouse has become a popular destination for those seeking enchanting views of the island, romantic strolls along the beach, family get-togethers and uniquely delicious Italian meals. Located near Arashi Beach on the northwestern tip of the island in the area of Hudishibana, the lighthouse was erected as a beacon to alert passing ships to the potential perils of the island’s coastline. Construction of the lighthouse began in 1914 and took two years to complete. Designed by a French architect, the stone tower today stands 100 feet tall and offers a breathtaking 360-degree panorama of the island’s amazing vistas with its rocky shorelines and white sand beaches, as well as the beautiful landscaping of the nearby Tierra del Sol Golf Course.

It was around midnight on September 23, 1891, that The SS California ran aground in the shallow waters just off the northern tip of Aruba on its way from Liverpool to Central America. The ship was carrying massive amounts of cargo including clothing and furniture, much of which was later salvaged. To this day, many erroneously believe The California to be the same ship that received but did not respond to, The Titanic’s SOS signal. However, the confusion is simply due to the closeness of the ships’ names. That second ship, which was ultimately torpedoed off the coast of Cape Matapan during World War I, was steel hulled rather than wooden and was called The Californian (with an “n”) rather than simply The California.

Twenty-five years following the wreck of The California, the lighthouse bearing its name began its operations and has successfully managed to warn approaching vessels to Aruba’s coastline ever since. Beginning in 2015, the lighthouse underwent extensive renovations and on August 26, 2016, which was the 100 year anniversary of the lighthouse’s original completion, The California Lighthouse reopened its doors. Special thanks must go to the governments of the Netherlands and Aruba, and the Sun Development Company for conserving this historic monument. Nestled at the base of the lighthouse is the delightfully captivating Italian Restaurant, La Trattoria El Faro Bianco (which translates to “the white lighthouse tavern”). Originally the lighthouse keeper’s quarters, this quaint and rustic building was expanded and converted into the restaurant and has since become a favorite among locals and visitors alike. Rock paintings and fragments of pottery dating from around A.D. 1,000 have been found on the island. The first European to visit Aruba was the Spanish explorer Alonso de Ojeda in 1499 and in 1636 it became a Dutch colony. The name Aruba is derived from the words “ore” and “ruba” or red gold, a reference to the discovery of gold on the island in 1824. In 1986, Aruba won its independence from The Netherlands Antilles and has status apart or autonomy within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Aruba is 19.6 miles long and 6 miles across, totaling 77 square miles or 193 square kilometers. Aruba is located 12° 30’ North Latitude; 68° 58’ West Longitude; 19 miles north of the Venezuelan coast, 990 nautical miles from Miami and 890 nautical miles from the Equator. Aruba is situated on the Caribbean Tectonic Plate. The island is made up of limestone capped hills and ridges, with cliffs on the northern and northeastern coasts and coral reefs on the southern coast. Aruba’s terrain is almost entirely flat. The highest elevation, Mount Jamanota, is only 188 m above sea level. Rock formations characterize the interior of the island.

The Aruban climate has little variation from yearly average of a sunny 81°F or 27°C tempered by northeasterly trade winds. Aruba is out of the range of the Caribbean hurricanes. If you think about it, what could be better than spending an afternoon at the beach, basking in the sun, playing a competitive game and having loads of fun in the process. Welcome to the world of Beach Tennis… a global phenomenon that has Aruba to thank for its success. In recent years, Beach Tennis has quickly morphed into one of the fastest growing sports in the world with Aruba rightly being credited as its birthplace. Come this November, visitors to Aruba will find out first hand just how popular the sport has become when fans from around the world converge on the Island for its annual International Beach Tennis Tournament. The sport had been a regular part of the island’s activities ever since the start of the new Millennium. But it wasn’t until 2003 that a gentleman by the name of Mark Altheim witnessed Beach Tennis being played for the first time while vacationing in Aruba. It was a moment which would soon lead to the sport becoming known the world over. Altheim recognized the addictive nature of the activity from both a player and spectator perspective and tried to explain its appeal to a few of his associates back in New York. By 2005, Altheim had succeeded in formalizing the sport which led to it being officially recognized by the International Tennis Federation three years later. ITF assumed responsibility for the development of Beach Tennis around the globe and held the first European Beach Tennis Championship in Rome, Italy in 2008. In no time at all, Beach Tennis quickly gained acceptance as a mainstream sport and today, there are over 300 official tournaments played each year around the world.

Beach Tennis is essentially a combination of beach volleyball, badminton and tennis and is played with a modified tennis racket and depressurized tennis ball. The object of the game is to volley the ball back and forth over the net without letting it hit the sand. Courts are the same size as standard beach volleyball courts measuring 30 feet wide and 60 feet long with net height of 5 foot, 10 inches. The scoring is the same as in regular tennis. The International Beach Tennis Tournament in Aruba takes place every November and attracts hundreds of participants and thousands of spectators from all over the world who are drawn to the event’s fast pace and highly festive atmosphere. The 2018 Tournament, which runs from November 11-18 and takes place near Eagle Beach on the west side of the island, will award a staggering $60,000 in prize money to this year’s competitors. Opening night festivities are scheduled to begin on Sunday the 11th. During the week, you will have the opportunity to watch and/or participate in the various levels and categories that include singles, doubles, juniors, amateurs and pro competitions. Nations Cup and Team Cups will take place on Thursday the 15th, while the finals will wrap things up nicely on Sunday the 18th. And of course, you won’t want to miss the after parties which take place on the beach each and every night during

the week! Nestled on the shores of Paardenbaai (bay of the horses), island capital Oranjestad sprang up at the end of the 18th century. The island’s oldest monument is Fort Zoutman, built to guard the young town in 1796. The Willem III Tower was added in 1868 to function as a lighthouse, it was named after the Dutch ruler of that time. Many of the city’s founders were merchants from Curaçao and they continued the tradition of commerce in their new home. Today Oranjestad is a peaceful and picturesque town, its streets lined with Dutch colonial gabled houses and modern buildings such as shops, malls, banks and offices that echo the architectural style of yesteryear. Spend your time in Oranjestad browsing through the many stores, malls and markets, dining or visiting several small museums and galleries. Caya Betico Croes, Havenstraat, Zoutmanstraat, Wilheminastraat and the waterfront boulevard are the principal streets. Other sites of interest on the island include San Nicolas, the second largest town which grew up around the oil refinery and attracted workers from many of the British Caribbean islands. ARIKOK NATIONAL PARK

Visitors can go into the bush to explore the ruins of the 19th century gold smelters at Bushiribana and Balashi or the rock formations at Casibari and Ayo.

Protecting one third of the island’s surface, Arikok National Park is a patchwork of rolling hills covered in cacti and bent divi trees, strange rock formations (lava, quartz diorite and limestone), caves and a stretch of coastline with beaches, dunes and rock platforms. The arid landscape is home to a surprising variety of birds including the endemic shoko or Aruba burrowing owl and prikichi or parakeet, orioles and hummingbirds, snakes, lizards, iguanas, wild donkeys and goats. Despite its inhospitable appearance, Arikok has been inhabited for thousands of years. Rock paintings in Fontein Cave and on huge boulders and the vestiges of ancient villages are testimony to the earliest Amerindian inhabitants. The park is also dotted with stone dwellings or cunucu which date from the Colonial period and housed the poorest settlers and their estate workers. A network of trails traverses the park and guided tours are available.

You can charter a boat for a day or a half-day and the experienced crew will take you right to where the fish are running. Help preserve local fish stocks by adhering to the catch and release policy.
