FRONT STREET ON THE DUTCH SIDE In the heart of Philipsburg, featuring over a mile of shopping. In addition to Front Street, there is Old Street with attractive gift stores and art galleries, and Back Street with a colorful local market, souvenir shops, and inexpensive clothing.

THE CAPITAL OF DUTCH SINT MAARTEN, PHILIPSBURG, IS RICH IN HISTORY AND ABUNDANT IN SHOPPING. Founded in 1763 by John Philips, a Scottish captain in the Dutch Navy, the town’s history is still felt when you pass by the historic

Court House that was built in 1793. Philipsburg became a bustling center for international trade including salt mining, which was

the Dutch settler’s main interest in this unique island. Remnants of the original Great Salt Pond can still be seen while driving along Walter A. Nisbeth Road, also known as Pondfill Road.

CHIC MARIGOT ON THE FRENCH SIDE

Marigot

The entire center and marina area of Marigot is a lovely shopping district with old Créole houses, bistro bars, cafes, restaurants, fashion and designer boutiques, jewelers and perfume shops. Set sail from Simpson Bay Resort & Marina or enjoy a 10 min. drive over the causeway, to experience French flavor in the port town of Marigot.

EXPLORERS WILL BE WELL REWARDED WITH AN ADVENTURE UNLIKE ANYTHING THE DUTCH SIDE OF THE ISLAND HAS TO OFFER. In contrast to the bustling cruise ship port of Philipsburg, Marigot is home to luxury yachts and charming boutiques. The cafés and bars along the marina offer some of the best pizza on the island, daily specials and fresh mussels, and remain packed with patrons throughout the day. Inland from the marina and those bustling cafés, you’ll find the Rue de la Liberté and the beginning of your shopping experience in Marigot.

PHILIPSBURG On most days, it is impossible to miss the gigantic vessels docked at the A.C. Wathey Pier. Great Bay, the bay in front of Philipsburg, can accommodate six large cruise ships at once. In fact, the pier was expanded in 2009 to accommodate the world’s largest mega class cruise ships. Today, Philipsburg is arguably the premier Caribbean destination for the world’s largest cruise lines.

With it’s compact nature and easy-to-follow street

plan, Philipsburg is made for pedestrian traffic and an ideal shopping experience. The Boardwalk, along the beautiful shores of Great Bay, is the place to grab a drink or have lunch while listening to live music. Head

Colada. Turn north onto any alley (Dutch: steeg) or street (Dutch: straat) and you will find a busy shopping area, Back Street. The market here offers a taste of

Getting from the resort to Philipsburg couldn’t be

easier. Take Aqua Mania’s water taxi, rent a car on Front Street is also home to a variety of points of

interest, including the St. Maarten Museum and the St. Maarten Guavaberry Company. Although guavaberries grow throughout the Caribbean, St. Maarten has taken

their cultivation to special heights, and the St. Maarten Guavaberry Company offers liqueur, barbecue sauce,

jam and other goods all made with the island’s native fruit. Make sure to stop by for free samples of their

history and interesting landmarks is included. Check with your personal concierge for bus schedules and to sign up. Once you experience the flavor of Philipsburg, you are sure to crave another trip to the Caribbean’s shopping capital.

MARIGOT Shops in Marigot offer many of the same high-end goods you’ll find in Philipsburg,

like perfume, jewelry and clothing, but with a decidedly French influence. Many of the best boutiques can be found in the West Indies Mall, which lies at the base of a hill. Fort St. Louis sits at the top, built in 1767 from plans developed by King Louis XVI, most famous for being guillotined during the French Revolution, this squat stone fort is one of the must-see sites in Marigot and offers a stunning view of the entire city. The city’s cemetery, which dates back to the early 19th century with French Caribbean influence will be noticeable to anyone who has been to New Orleans and seen similar above ground crypts. Along with these sites, visitors should be sure to hit Marigot’s open-air market, which takes place each

Amuseum Naturalis: St. Martin’s Heritage on Display

Mer in 2013.

Then as luck would Focusing primarily on nature at first, the museum soon expanded to include the history and culture of the island. Plans to roll out the museum began in 2015 and by the following year, Amuseum Naturalis was up and running. Mark recalls, “Initially, we proposed that 2016 would be the museum’s only season. But after that first year, we knew we wanted to make it permanent.” In fact, the museum was an immediate hit with both tourists and residents alike, averaging more than 5000 visitors annually during its first two years of operation. But then tragedy struck. In the fall of 2017, the island of St. Martin was devastated by the Category 5 storm known as Hurricane Irma. The building which housed the museum was destroyed. However, the curators did manage to safely protect its irreplaceable contents, and for the next few months, these crated historical exhibits became affectionately known as the “museum in a box.”

have it, Mark met the people who owned The Old House, a 250-yearold historical complex located on a hill above Le Galion in the French Quarter. This magnificent location would now serve as the museum’s home. Mark continues, “Even if

you’ve seen the rest of St Martin, you haven’t seen a place quite as gorgeous as this. It truly is special.”

Mark describes Amuseum Naturalis as a museum operated by the people and for the people. At last count, volunteers had donated more than 4000 hours of their time to the running of the museum and its affiliated programs, and have in turn become part of its family. The museum conducts a volunteer day once a month, and although they hope to one day get financial aid from the French government, the museum must currently rely on the generous donations of its supporters in order to stay afloat.

Throughout the museum, visitors can learn about the many species of plants and

Each year, thousands of visitors descend on the beautiful island of St. Martin, specifically to enjoy the perfect Caribbean climate and the beautiful terrain.

Of the more than 150 recorded species of birds found on St. Martin, more than half are migratory and can be found inhabiting the island throughout the months of September to May. Starting in the year 2000, Environmental Protection in the Caribbean (EPIC) has conducted a survey of the migratory patterns of these birds and have discovered that the same species always return to the same specific locations on St. Martin. Most of St. Martin’s migratory birds spend their summers nesting in North America. Their mission is to promote awareness of ecology and culture through inspiration and education. Each fall they host the annual Migratory Bird Festival, a free event where visitors and residents alike can celebrate and learn about the magnificent migratory birds that travel thousands of miles every year in order to spend the winter in St. Martin.

The family-friendly experience was started in 2013 and is overseen by a team of 20 volunteers. Festival activities include birdwatching, bird sleuth games, interactive stations, arts and crafts, and much more. Attendees will be able to discover how birds successfully navigate their incredible journeys and will also learn about the important role the island of St Martin plays in their life cycle.

“We’re excited to have lots of fun and find new ways to connect with birds and nature,” explains Les Fruits de Mer President and co-founder Jean Yerkes. “Visitors can learn the

songs of some of our visiting birds and go on a hunt for the things these birds need to survive.” Amuseum Naturalis curator Mark Yokoyama adds that attendees will have the opportunity to paint bird-themed art onto their own canvas tote bags as well as enjoy other artistic endeavors.

As in years past, the Migratory Bird Festival will be held at the Amuseum Naturalis in The Old House located on the hill above Le Galion in the French Quarter on October 12, 2019, from 9 am til noon. The Festival is part of the World Migratory Bird Day which celebrates the activities of these wonderful animals throughout various Caribbean islands and around the world. In addition to all of the many bird-oriented activities, attendees will be able to explore the museum itself and uncover the 250-year-old history of
