Sustainability & Jobs of the Future

A Message from the Headmaster I am delighted to introduce the Royal Russell Careers & Higher Education Fair 2022 with a special welcome to pupils and parents of Year 11 who regrettably, missed out on this opportunity in 2021 due to Covid restrictions. We are committed to providing careers related experiences for our pupils to enable them to fully consider the different pathways available beyond their Royal Russell journey. That may be heading to University or gaining an Apprenticeship or taking time out on a gap year to fulfil personal development goals. All can bring success and should be considered carefully to determine which is right for the individual. Many of our young people will be torn between these different pathways and unsure about what each can offer. This evening provides space and time to learn about the wealth of opportunity and

to gather information to look ahead with a sense of purpose, to those important decisions about the future. Our theme, Sustainability & Jobs of the Future, is entirely fitting with this. Never before have new job roles been created at the rate at which we are experiencing now. The combination of climate change, rapid advances in technology and our post-pandemic world are forcing us all to think about doing things differently. New ideas are needed and our pupils will likely be the ones to provide these. Our exhibitors are not, in the main, sustainability specialists

but all can offer advice and information about how their organisations, business roles or products and services, including university courses, are adapting. Thank you to our generous exhibitors, including a number of Old Russellians and current parents, for giving up their valuable time after a busy working day to support our event. This Fair would not be possible without your contributions.

Sustainability & Jobs of the Future

The Royal Russell School’s Sustainability Statement The Royal Russell Community has committed to being part of the global community taking positive action to tackle the negative effects of climate change. We have prioritised sustainability as a strategic priority for the School as we find new ways to make environmental sustainability a daily activity that is automatic as a core value for our community. Our School has a central role to play in educating our pupils, staff, parents and visitors about the importance of our environment and how we can all adapt our behaviours to become more environmentally sustainable. Our community has a clear understanding of the current global issues and we embrace solutions to continuously increase our sustainability and decrease our carbon footprint. As young leaders of the future, our pupils will be key to enabling this change, and we will give them the knowledge and skills

to affect positive change as the creative problem-solvers of the future.

clear strategy to maximise the opportunities for improvement in these and other areas.

As educators, we will lead by example to achieve outstanding environmental performance in all of our new buildings, as well as seeking to improve the historic buildings on our campus, some of which were built in 1924. To fulfil our ambitious plans we will audit, review and consult with stakeholders including parents, students, staff and Old Russellians. Our community recognises the need to address these wider environmental impacts and then build a

We are currently drafting an Environmental Sustainability Plan which will be supported by specific aims, operational objectives and detailed policies and plans. This will be published after our formal period of review. We are resolute in our desire to be part of the solution and we feel optimistic about joining the fight to build a better future for us all and our planet.

How to Prepare Pupils and families are encouraged to do a little preparation before the fair to ensure maximum gain. Large Fairs like this can be overwhelming if you haven’t had a chance to think ahead about who you want to speak to and what you want to discover. Look at the exhibitors attending and click through the links to find out a bit more about the company.

Employer Exhibition From employer websites: • Read about what area of business they are in. • What different job roles are on offer in their company and what skills and qualifications they look for in potential employees • Do they offer opportunities for apprentices? • Can you find information about their strategies, values and stance on sustainability? • Do they invest in their people by focusing on training and skills development?

• Do they offer work experience or insight programmes for school pupils? • Do they appear to be an organisation that you would be proud to work for? Look out for headings such as About Us; Careers; Latest News and Culture/Values. Look at their social media channels – you can discover a lot about organisations’ current challenges, achievements and opportunities from their feeds.

Use your Unifrog account to research job roles (Careers library) - check the skills required for the roles and make sure you look at the Labour Market Information (LMI) to understand how much (or not) the role is expected to grow both locally and nationally.

Careers & Higher Education Fair 2022

Sustainability & Jobs of the Future

Higher Education & Gap Year Exhibition For universities, look at where they are geographically, what courses they offer and the entry requirements and see where the different qualifications can lead. Look at the facilities – does the Library look inviting, are the sports facilities modern and what different accommodation options are there? If you have a specific course in mind, use your Unifrog account (Subjects Library) to do your research before the Fair so you gather the information you really need. Think about what you want to get out from speaking to these exhibitors: perhaps what

their Admissions tutors look for in a Personal Statement? Or what links with industry the university has? How do they ensure their course content is kept up to date? Ask exhibitors their opinion on gap years - do they benefit students? How? What could you do? How will this contribute to your personal development? If you have a very clear idea of what career you want to follow, deliberately pick at least another 2 exhibitors from

different industry sectors/ universities and speak to them. Gathering information from a wide range of exhibitors will help you see the similarities as well as the differences between career routes which will add to your understanding of your choice. Challenging yourself to have a quality conversation with many exhibitors will not only help develop your knowledge but your confidence and communication skills too.

International & US College Applications Exhibition Whilst the UK is fortunate to be a global leader in higher education there can be a great number of benefits when choosing to study abroad. The process of applying to European, US and other international universities is very different from a UK application via UCAS. Since Brexit, UK nationals no longer benefit from the generally lower tuition fees payable by EU students and freedom of movement between the UK and EU countries may be subject to visa restrictions. Having a clear and realistic understanding of the application process is vital and early preparation is key. For US Colleges, the application process can seem daunting. Costs can appear to be prohibitive and the higher education system confusing.

But with good research and support, it is possible to secure the perfect fit for you in America at a cost that is affordable. For talented athletes a scholarship to a US College to play your sport at varsity(1st team) level may appeal. Academic requirements can be high so it is vital you select Colleges that suit both your performance and academic level. Planning for your application as early as Year 10 can be advantageous. In this exhibition you can learn from experts in the applications and admissions process and speak with a current parent who

has successfully supported her daughter to study in America. We are also lucky to have an OR who studied at the University of Groningen, Netherlands. Lisa Mortini, Admissions Counsellor for NYU will meet with those who have pre-booked a short, virtual appointment with her. Please click here to access information from her. Requests for an appointment to ksmith@ royalrussell.co.uk

Bookings close on Thursday 10 March.

At the Fair Practise Your Professional Behaviours A school event like this is a great opportunity for you to practise and develop your professional behaviours. First Impressions: What can you do to ensure the exhibitor recognises in the first few seconds of meeting you that you are worth them investing their time and energy in the conversation to follow? Communication: Make sure you speak clearly and confidently, using active listening skills and focus on it being a conversation rather than a Q&A. Ask follow up questions to clarify your understanding.

Time management: Make good use of any time you are waiting to speak to someone by bringing up their website or checking latest social media feeds. When you are speaking with an exhibitor, use your time wisely, don’t rush, but judge when it’s time to move on and let others in. Collaboration: If an exhibitor is particularly busy, agree with others who are waiting to meet as a group rather than one at a time. Give time and space to everyone to ask their questions and listen respectively to the

answers, which will most certainly be useful for you too. Exit strategy: When it’s time to move on, make sure you clearly thank each exhibitor and demonstrate that you found the conversation useful. For information on networking skills, preparing to meet with Universities and developing your competencies, check out the Know How Library on Unifrog.

After the Fair If you collected a business card or contact details, email to thank the exhibitor for their time and say briefly how your conversation has helped you. Follow up immediately on any offers of work experience or visits – don’t delay! Reflect on the information you gathered and discuss with family, teachers/tutors and friends about how this has helped your decision-making process.

Parents - you can create your own Unifrog account by clicking www.unifrog. org/code and using the code RUBXparents Watch this short video for more information.
