In this mixed media piece I had a page out of a sketchbook with a drawing on it and then laid the colours over it. The yellow paint in the piece has allowed the drawing to bleed through, I only noticed this after the piece dried. So here is yellow over a drawing.

They Do it

Most of the important things you will have to do to be a successful Artist are not things you will feel like doing, but that does not matter you will still have to do them.

The difference between highly successful people is that they know that hard things have to be done and they just do them, they do not debate and negotiate with themselves and talk themselves out of it because they do not feel like it, they do it.

The difference is taking action and doing it quickly so you don’t talk yourself out of it. So next time you know you should do something but don’t feel like doing it, act and do it, that is what successful people do.

Life of an Average

The Renaissance: Creativity Amidst Scarcity

The Renaissance period, spanning from the 14th to the 17th century, was a time of great artistic and cultural flourishing in Europe. It was a period marked by significant scarcity and economic challenges, yet it gave rise to some of the most remarkable artistic achievements in history. During this time, artists faced material shortages and economic constraints, yet they demonstrated remarkable resourcefulness and creativity in making the most of what they had.

Amidst the scarcity of resources, artists of the Renaissance period displayed unparalleled ingenuity and adaptability. One of the most notable examples is the renowned artist Leonardo da Vinci, who, despite limited access to traditional art supplies, utilized unconventional materials such as chalk, charcoal, and even the backs of old manuscripts to create his masterpieces. His ability to innovate and make the most of what was available exemplifies the true essence of creativity in the face of adversity.

Similarly, the sculptor Donatello, faced with a shortage of bronze, turned to other materials such as wood and clay to produce his iconic sculptures. By embracing the limitations of his environment, Donatello was able to push the boundaries of artistic expression and leave a lasting legacy that continues to inspire artists to this day.

The Renaissance period serves as a powerful reminder that true creativity knows no bounds. Despite

the scarcity and poverty that characterized the era, artists were able to produce enduring works of art that continue to captivate and inspire audiences centuries later. This remarkable ability to create beauty amidst hardship is a testament to the resilience and determination of the human spirit.

In today's world, where materials and resources are abundant, artists can learn valuable lessons from the resourcefulness of their Renaissance counterparts. The emphasis on innovation and adaptability in the face of scarcity serves as a timeless example for artists to embrace challenges and push the boundaries of their creativity. By looking to the past, artists can gain a deeper appreciation for the value of resourcefulness and the transformative power of limitations.

The Renaissance period not only showcases the triumph of creativity over scarcity but also underscores the importance of humility and respect for the creative process. Artists of that time approached their work with a sense of reverence for their craft, recognizing the significance of their contributions to the cultural landscape. This spirit of humility and dedication to their art is a timeless lesson that resonates with artists today, reminding them to approach their work with sincerity and integrity.

The Renaissance period stands as a testament to the remarkable achievements that can

6 South East Asian Artists Magazine

arise from scarcity and adversity. The resourcefulness and creativity displayed by artists of that era continue to inspire and challenge contemporary artists to push the boundaries of their craft. By embracing the

lessons of the past and cultivating a spirit of humility and adaptability, artists can harness the true essence of creativity and leave a lasting impact on the world of art.

A Renowned figure for Fine Printmaking

Is a Filipino artist known for his outstanding prints and paintings, and for his extraordinary contributions to the world of fine arts. Among his many notable works are his prints, paintings, and other visual arts that have been showcased in various exhibitions throughout the years.

For Aviado, art is a means of exploring the fundamental nature of our reality. He believes that art can be a portal to transcendence and that it provides

insights into the interconnectedness of living beings. According to him, art is an opportunity to bridge the gap between the physical and spiritual worlds, and it can be a medium for communicating with higher dimensions. Art is a way for him to explore other dimensions that we cannot see. He believes that there is a connection between art, nature, and synchronicity, a term coined by psychologist Carl Jung to describe meaningful coincidences. Aviado saw art as an extension of this concept, a way of connecting to a higher level of

8 South East Asian Artists Magazine
Virgilio "Pandy" Aviado

consciousness. He spent most of his professional career exploring the concept of nature as a spiritually healing force that could connect humans to other dimensions that they cannot see in the daily surroundings.

In his own words, Aviado said that, "Art is a meditation, a journey that takes us to a higher level of consciousness. You just let the image come out, and you watch it emerge in front of you. When you do prints, you're on a journey, a journey toward knowing who you are." This journey is what Zen practitioners call "Satori," a term that refers to a moment when one's consciousness attains a state of enlightenment or spiritual awakening.

Aviado often refers to Zen philosophy in his work. He believes that the practice of Zen meditation can be mirrored in the process of creating art. He often quotes the term "Satori," a Zen term for "awakening," to

describe the journey towards self-discovery that art can provide.

Aviado's artworks are mostly characterized by the use of bold lines, primary colors, and geometric shapes. He is known for using a variety of materials in his work, from oils to acrylics, and watercolors. He's meticulous in his execution of print making. His attention to detail and the complexity of his work has gained him tremendous respect among the international printmaking community.

Aviado is also an advocate for the importance of printmaking as a medium of creative expression. For him, it is essential to bring awareness to this often-overlooked art form. As a printmaker, he feels that his medium is unique because it allows him to transmit his vision to others. According to Aviado, creating a print is a

communal process because it relies on the participation of many individuals, each with their particular expertise.

The process of printmaking, for Aviado, is an act of mindfulness. By engaging in the process, the artist is forced to slow down and become aware of his or her surroundings. At the same time, the time-consuming nature of printmaking demands discipline, which he believes strengthens the artist's spiritual growth.

Virgilio "Pandy" Aviado's works are a testament to his explorations of spiritualism, connectedness, and nature. He believes that art is a tool for personal growth, and through his artwork, he has found a way to showcase his beliefs.

His dedication to printmaking and the creative process behind it is an inspiring example of how art can be a meditative process and how the act of creating can lead to higher levels of consciousness and enlightenment. As an artist, he represents a unique voice in the world of printmaking and has gained staggering recognition for his contributions to the field.

His belief in the importance of art as a tool for self-reflection, and his commitment to telling stories through images are what made him an enduring figure in the Philippine art scene.

Ballpoint Basics: Drawing With Ballpoint Pens

Getting the most out of drawing media.

Ballpoint pens may have been invented for writing, but why not draw with them? These days, more and more artists are deciding to do so. Ballpoint is a fairly young medium, dating back only to the 1880s, when John J. Loud, an American tanner, patented a crude pen with a rotating ball at its tip that could only make marks on rough surfaces such as leather. Some 50 years later László Bíró, a Hungarian journalist, improved Loud’s invention using quick-drying newspaper ink and a better ball at its tip. When held perpendicular to its surface, Bíró’s pen could write smoothly on paper. In the 1950s the Frenchman Baron Marcel Bich purchased Bíró’s patent and devised a leak-proof capillary tube to hold the ink, and the Bic Cristal pen was born. It was durable and could write when held at any angle, even upside down.

Although ballpoint pens’ consistently even line was at first denounced as heralding the death of beautiful handwriting, the neat and inexpensive pens quickly became ubiquitous, replacing more expensive and inflexible fountain pens. The hexagonal, transparent Bic Cristal was considered such a remarkably designed product that one is held in the collection of The Museum of Modern Art, in New York.

Ballpoint in Art

Ballpoint drawings are all about line and what an artist can create with it. In the 1970s the critic Walter Koschatzky dismissed the possibility that ballpoint had any potential for serious artists on precisely this basis. “Pressing the point of the pen down produces no change in the thickness of the line,” he wrote. ' “[ Therefore] its use in art is virtually nil. Drawings done with a ballpoint pen always exhibit a deadness of line.” Artists, however, had already begun to prove Koschatzky wrong, with such prominent figures as Alberto Giacometti, Joseph Beuys, Andy Warhol and Cy Twombly adopting ballpoint for various manners of drawing.

Ballpoint pens offer some serious advantages to artists who work with them. To start, many artists and collectors disagree entirely with Koschatzky’s disparaging view of ballpoint’s line, finding the consistent width and tone of ballpoint lines to be aesthetically pleasing. Ballpoint drawings can be composed of dense dashes, slow contour lines, crosshatches, or rambling scribbles. Placing marks adjacent to one another can create carefully modulated areas of tone. And if you desire some variation in line width, you can get it. It’s true that pressing a ballpoint pen harder produces comparatively little change in the line’s thickness, but pens now come in an array of widths that artists can switch between. Some are less than half a millimeter wide and can be used for the most delicate details.

Among ballpoint’s other selling points: They never need to be sharpened; they are lightweight, non-toxic, and odorless; and many modern ballpoints are archival. Ballpoint pens glide quicker than most

other drawing media, making them perfect for quick sketches. They move smoothly in all directions and can abruptly change direction. They can be used on many surfaces other than paper, including gesso panels and illustration boards—the contemporary artist Jack Dillhunt is known for drawing with ballpoint on bedsheets.

There are so many ballpoint pens available that choosing between them can be perplexing, and to muddy things further, the nomenclature is confusing. We can group the pens into three main categories. The first of these is usually simply called ballpoint pens, but to distinguish it from the other varieties, here we’ll call it “standard ballpoint pens.” The second category is rollerball pens, and the third is gel pens. These three varieties have basic mechanical qualities in common, but each differs in certain characteristics and uses a different kind of ink.

Standard Ballpoint Pens

Black and blue may be the most common, but ballpoints come in countless tempting colors. Further colors can be made by using a crosshatching technique, layering varying values and colors to create subtle optical combinations. Working on colored surfaces adds even more possibilities in this regard.

Although erasable ballpoints exist, most pens are not erasable. Once a line is made, it is permanent, and for artists this can be daunting but also quite rewarding. “Mistakes” can be left alone or corrected by incorporating them into an image with a darker value or another color, exposing the artist’s creative process.

Ballpoint Pen Varieties

Ballpoints range from inexpensive disposable pens to more expensive refillable models and high-end collectible pens. Some artists simply buy refills and use them without any holders at all. Ballpoint pens can be capped or retractable, single-colored or multicolored. Some include a stylus tip compatible with touchscreens on smartphones and tablets.

Standard ballpoint pens are filled with ink that is viscous, oil-based, permanent and quick-drying. It is designed not to smear or bleed. Altering pressure on the point creates a slight variation of values. Filling an area solidly with standard ballpoint ink creates a uniquely leather-like texture. The ink supply in standard ballpoints tends to last longer than those of rollerball and gel pens. Because the ink in standard ballpoints is permanent and quick-drying, watercolor and ink washes can easily be added to these drawings without losing the original marks.

Rollerball Pens

Rollerball pens have water-soluble liquid ink similar to that used in fountain pens, but unlike fountain pens the ink is held in a self-contained compartment that is in contact with a rolling ball at the tip. Rollerball inks dry slower and are more likely to bleed and smear than standard ballpoint inks. Rollerball allows for more variation in line width than standard ballpoint. Slow strokes can make thicker lines, especially on soft, spongy surfaces. The ink is so fluid that a momentary pause can cause it to puddle. This can cause disaster, although with practice the problem can be turned into an advantage, with artists using these puddles deliberately to add dark accents.

Tan Chui Mui’s Exhibition in France expands the notion of image and artwork

J

uly 3, 2023, Kuala Lumpur - Malaysian artist Tan Chui Mui is showcasing her exhibition project “Just Because You Pressed the Shutter?” at the 54th edition of the Rencontres d'Arles in France from July 3 to September 24.

Held in the historical building, Abbaye de Montmajour, Tan’s exhibition aims to expand the conventional notions of image and artwork and explore the implications of artificial intelligence (AI) in photography.

“The photograph captures the scene, but the scene was always there. You did not build the camera. Why should the photograph belong to you? Because you composed the shot? Just because you pressed the shutter?” Tan wrote in the introduction of her exhibition.

In this exhibition, Tan produces and showcases several work series generated by AI, mirroring her reflections on copyright, property, and image making.

The Kinmen series (2022) presents her imagination of the land of her ancestor, Kinmen Island, in Taiwan. The Arles series (2023) represents the historic town of Arles, France in an unusual light. The Luma Tower, designed by famous architect Frank Gehry, and the Arles Amphitheatre, a UNESCO world heritage site, are humorously placed into algorithmically generated images

PCAB2010_by Jessie Yap Sin Chun

“The images recall those of Japanese tourists from the 1980s who, taking advantage of their country’s economic growth to travel in Europe and North America, captured myriad photographs of Western architecture on home cameras. In Tan's conceptual works, however, the Japanese have been replaced by Chinese tourists, and the era has switched to the 2000s,” elaborated by the curator, Wang Yiquan. Tan said, “My exhibition is mainly to pose a question about the meaning of photography, authorship and ownership. I do not think I have an answer myself.

“A photographer captures a photo, with the action of composing the photo, choosing the lens and the mise en scene, and ultimately, choosing the moment to press the shutter and hence "creating" an artwork of a captured moment, freezes a moment from the flow of the eternity.”

“My question is, how do the photographer claim ownership or copyright? A moon and a mountain have been there for millions of years, the photographer stood there and took a photo, is it because of his presence? or his emotional connection with this landscape? A boy jumped over a puddle of water, the photographer waited and captured the precise moment. Is it because of the time he waited?” Tan added.

The video installation in the exhibition, titled “The Emotion Machine” is a nine-hour-long video referencing American scientist and AI pioneer Marvin Minsky’s eponymous book. It showcases a nine-hour-long video, of the mundane daily life, asking what is the “moment”.

All of the exhibition works are evolving around Tan’s initial question: in a time when images are easily generated by AI, what is our connection to the image?

In conjunction with her exhibition, Tan is also invited to participate in a roundtable discussion titled “Artificial Intelligence and Photography: What Stakes for the Authors?” explores the impacts and challenges of AI on photography.

The session is organised by the ADAGP (French collective rights management society in the field of the visual arts) and is scheduled to be held on July 5.

The discussion is led by the ADAGP’s director, Marie-Anne Ferry-Fall and featuring other industry experts including Valérie-Laure Benabou, professor in private law at Paris-Saclay University, Nicolas Giraud, artist, photographer, and art theoretician, and Fred Ritchin, distinguished dean at the International Center of Photography (ICP) and author.

The Rencontres d'Arles is one of the the largest, earliest and most influential photography festival in the world. Tan will be one of the first Malaysian artists to be invited. She was invited to exhibit in the festival as she won the “2022 Jimei x Arles Discovery Award” in the 8th Jimei x Arles International Photo Festival, which was held in China last year.

The Artistry of Saldi Belsonda: A Tale of Toothpick Sculptures

Salvador "Saldi" Palad Belsonda, a Filipino artist born on November 19,1960, has carved a unique niche in the art world through his exceptional talent in metal fabrication and toothpick sculpture. Presently residing in Calauan, Laguna with his family, Belsonda's journey as an artist is a testament to his unwavering passion and dedication to his craft.

Before venturing into the world of art, Belsonda worked as a lubricant and industrial products salesman. However, his innate creativity and entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish his own business as a fabrication and maintenance contractor. It was during this time that he discovered his love for creating intricate sculptures using toothpicks, a humble yet versatile medium.

One of Belsonda's remarkable creations is the "Torre de las Filipinas," a free-standing sculpture made entirely of toothpicks. Measuring approximately 80×198cm, this masterpiece, completed in April 2021 after six years and three months of meticulous work, stands as a symbol of his dedication to promoting the love of country and the environment. The female figure within the sculpture represents the Philippines, while the use of toothpicks as the main medium serves to promote the use of natural and eco-friendly materials.

In addition to the "Torre de las Filipinas," Belsonda also crafted "Perlas ng Silangan" in 2014, originally intended as part of the larger piece. This prototype sculpture symbolizes the "Pearl of the

22 South East Asian Artists Magazine

Orient," a term used to describe the Philippines for its abundant natural resources, particularly its aquatic wealth. Intended to be held by the female figure in the "Torre de las Filipinas," "Perlas ng Silangan" embodies Filipino identity and culture.

Furthermore, Belsonda's artistic prowess extends beyond cultural symbolism. In 2023, he created "Bicycle Kick," an approximately 82 × 48cm sculpture inspired by the iconic move in football popularized by the legendary player Pelè. Intrigued by the beauty of Pelè's bicycle kick, Belsonda sought to capture its essence in a sculpture using his favorite medium—toothpicks. The result is a stunning and picturesque representation of this renowned football maneuver.

Belsonda's artistry is not only a testament to his creativity but also to his meticulous attention to detail. His toothpick sculptures are a testament to his dedication and patience, showcasing the intricate nature of his work. Despite the complexity of his creations, Belsonda remains a simple and humble man, letting his art speak for itself.

Saldi Belsonda's journey as an artist is a testament to the power of passion and dedication. Through his toothpick sculptures, he not only showcases his remarkable talent but also promotes the use of eco-friendly materials and celebrates the rich cultural heritage of the Philippines. His art serves as an inspiration, reminding us that even the most humble materials can be transformed into extraordinary works of art.

The Museum and Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art

The Museum and Gallery

Is dedicated to collecting, preserving, and interpreting developments in the late 19th century to post-World War II art through 1970’s (Modern Art) and 1970’s to the present (Contemporary Art) in all media and creating a welcoming environment for its public appreciation. The Museum promote understanding and interest in art and artists through art shows and exhibitions, curatorial research and publications, and a variety of educational programs, including lectures, guided tours, and workshops.

The Museum is an organic, changing place. Although all the works seen are part of our permanent collection, in order to show the full range of our holdings - over 2,000 objets d’art - and to accommodate important temporary exhibitions, certain works must occasionally be taken off view.

Modern Art

Modern Art includes artistic work produced during the period extending roughly from the 1860s to the 1970s, and denotes the styles and philosophy of the art produced during that era. The term is usually associated with art in which the traditions of the past have been thrown aside in a spirit of experimentation. More recent artistic production is often called contemporary art or postmodern art.

Contemporary

Art

Contemporary Art is the art of today, produced in the second half of the 20th century or in the 21st century. Contemporary artists work in a globally influenced, culturally diverse, and technologically advancing world. Some define contemporary art as art produced within “our lifetime”.
