" Change." When I finished this piece I thought the cardboard showing through would look interesting but unfortunately it made the piece quite drab. So I decided to change it and put yellow oil pastels over the cardboard and I am quite happy with the results. Experimental work is challenging as it can easily fall over because you never know what comes next. . Mixed media collage on card. 19cm x 26cm.
Learning to walk.
5
Learning to paint was fun and not hard, because we are passionate about it. Learning to sell is hard, because we have a built in resistance when dealing with strangers. We have been educated to fear strangers since we were little children, stranger danger, and like walking it is instinctive. We need to reeducate ourselves to like strangers because we need them, lots of them to have a successful and rewarding Art business. Remember, they to you and you to them are only strangers until you speak to them and then you become acquaintances, then friendlies and then friends. Learning to walk was hard and learning to talk to strangers may be hard, but like walking once you master it, it will become instinctive and you will just do it.

Life of an Average By: Ingrid Aimee

"Zoned Out" It happens innocently enough: One minute,
you're sitting at your desk, working on a report, and the next minute you're thinking about how you probably need to do laundry and that you want to try the new restaurant down the street. Mind wandering is a frequent occurrence. And while mind wandering in certain situations - in class, work, for example - can be counterproductive, some say that it isn't necessarily a bad thing. You might be driving home from work, taking a shower, preparing ingredients for dinner and, suddenly - Eureka! - you have new insight into some problem or situation. Anecdotes tell us that people often have these kinds of creative thoughts while engaged in unrelated tasks. I'd argue here of course that daydreaming is an essential dimension of play. In daydreaming, we're free to psychologically traverse through every obscure or far flung thought. We are welcome to try on any solution or scenario that piques our interest at the moment. However, emotional or practical, daydreaming hones our emotional and cognitive dexterity. We take apart a problem and perceive it from an entirely new angle. We reflect on an overriding emotion, and suddenly process it on some unique level. Who hasn't indulged in a little Walter Mitty style fantasy and not felt better - or at least been

pleasantly amused for it? Isn't it how we become more fully ourselves? More seriously, it's also partly how our species has become more deftly human. Some of humanity's greatest inventions most beautiful creations, and profound thoughts have stemmed from a bald-faced lack of intention. Anyone who's had a eureka moment while daydreaming in the shower can attest to this phenomenon. Far from some shiftless indulgence, daydreaming or zoning out is a part of our cerebral jackpot. It opens up the chance for random connection, irrelevant association, and novel insight. My life always takes the same direction as my daydreaming. For instance, I'm a much more productive writer when my spare moments are filled with thoughts of my articles. At times like those, I sit down to write already knowing what to do because I've thought it over all day and night. It seems like an innocent activity, but the things you think about when you daydream are an important part of your life. I would venture to say it determines your future more than anything else. Why? Because your heart lies in the place your mind goes when it wanders. That's where all our attention and energy is directed, and that's where we are the most successful.

"Hanoi: an art trip to remember" Text and images by Ingrid Aimee Peñaflor
L
ast February 5, 2023, I had an unforgettable experience in Hanoi, Vietnam. I was part of an art exhibit entitled Beyond Expression where Filipino and Vietnamese artists showcased their masterpieces. With the support of the Philippine Embassy of Hanoi, our thanks go out to Mr. Roy Espinosa of Filarts Incorporated, who orchestrated the partnership between our countries, as well as Mr. Dang Tuan of Palm Art Space, who provided his team's expertise and helped organise the exhibit. Without them, this rare and imperative exchange would not have been possible. Being in Hanoi was an incredible experience, and I was thrilled to be a part of the exhibition. The venue made for an excellent location, with great lighting and an ambiance that complemented the artworks. The Vietnamese artists showcased the country's rich culture and heritage through their paintings, sculptures, and mixed media art pieces. In contrast, the Filipino artists' artworks focused on contemporary themes yet still had an essence of Filipinism. After the exhibit, we stayed at the luxurious Vin Pearl hotel. The hotel's vibe was welcoming, and the staff were very hospitable, making us feel relaxed and South East Asian Artists Magazine
at home. The room was spacious, comfortable, and had a balcony with a magnificent view of the city. The following day, we had a boat ride tour in Ha Long Bay, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. The sheer size of the bay was impressive, with over 1,600 islands and islets on the emerald sea. The limestone karsts and caves were breathtaking, and the natural beauty of the place was surreal. Aside from the awe-inspiring scenery, the food in Hanoi was also memorable. The noodles dish was one of my favorites, with the perfect blend of savory and spicy. The seafood dishes were also a must-try, with a variety of choices that were fresh and flavorful. Overall, my trip to Hanoi, Vietnam, was a fantastic experience. The rich culture and history of the place, the stunning natural beauty, and the mouth-watering cuisine made for an unforgettable journey. I will certainly come back to this charming city and explore more of what it has to offer.

Harmony in Hues: The Artistic Odyssey of Dang Tuan
In the heart of Vietnam, amidst the ancient
streets of Hanoi, Dang Anh Tuan found his muse. Born and raised in the capital city that boasts millennia of culture, Tuan's artistic journey is a captivating narrative of passion, culture, and an unyielding commitment to the canvas. Dang Anh Tuan was born in 1969, a time when Vietnam was navigating the complexities of its history. It was against this backdrop that Tuan's fascination with art began to blossom. His early years in Hanoi, a city that has seen dynasties rise and fall, provided him with a unique lens through which to view the world. The rich tapestry of Vietnamese culture became the palette from which he drew his inspiration. As a testament to his dedication to the craft, Tuan graduated from Vietnam's University of Fine Art in 1996. The academic corridors became the crucible South East Asian Artists Magazine
where his raw talent was refined and his understanding of the expressive power of art deepened. Since then, Tuan has embraced the life of a full-time artist, weaving his experiences and cultural roots into the very fabric of his creations. Tuan's artistic inclination found early inspiration in the revolutionary ideas of French artist Paul Gauguin. Gauguin's exploration of the primitive and exotic spoke to Tuan's soul, sparking a fire that would burn brightly in his early works. His paintings, a kaleidoscope of human emotions, nature's intricacies, and the diverse cultures he encountered during his travels, are a visual symphony that transcends the canvas. The varying materials Tuan employs in his artwork reflect the depth of his experimentation and the breadth of his artistic exploration. From the rich textures of oil to the traditional allure of lacquer, the ver-

His artistic prowess has not gone unnoticed, and a string of awards punctuates his career. In 2000, the Vietnam Literature and Art Association acknowledged his contribution to the artistic landscape. The European International Book Art Biennal honored him in 2010, and in 2018, the 4th Paris Art Fair crowned his career with distinction. One of the zeniths of Tuan's journey as a painter was his role as the curator of the Open Lacquer project. This ambitious endeavor, a collaboration between Vietnamese and international artists, unfolded at the Hampden Gallery in Massachusetts, USA, in 2011. His journey from the ancient streets of Hanoi to the global stage is not just a personal narrative but a shared odyssey, an exploration of culture, identity, and the profound impact art can have on the human soul. Through his work, Tuan invites us to see beyond the brushstrokes and into a world where colors speak, cultures converge, and the canvas becomes a mirror reflecting the collective spirit of humanity.

Neo-Morales-ism A Filipino artist, has captivated audiences
with his unique style of art known as Neo-Morales-ism. Born in Baganga, Davao in 1971, Morales later moved to Cotabato in 1986, amidst the turmoil of the EDSA Revolution. Despite facing difficult circumstances, Morales's talent and passion for art shone through. Having pursued formal studies in mechanical engineering, Morales was able to merge his technical knowledge with his artistic abilities. In Cotabato, where daily life was plagued by gunfire between the army and rebels, Morales witnessed the harsh realities of the world. Bodies strewn across the town became a haunting image in his mind. However, fate had other plans for Morales when he was brought to Manila after his grandmother's passing. Under the guidance of his aunt, Emma, and her husband, William Yu, Morales' artistic journey took flight. From a young age, Morales displayed a talent for drawing, often creating illustrations of superheroes with exaggerated muscles. While some teachers may have discouraged this form of expression, Yu recognized Morales' potential and encouraged him to pursue his artistic talents. Morales became Yu's assistant, honing his skills and learning from his mentor's expertise. South East Asian Artists Magazine
In addition to his training with William Yu, Morales also learned the art of landscape painting from Dexter Trinidad. Trinidad not only taught him the techniques but also provided him with the opportunity to earn a modest income. Morales would create initial drawings on canvas, laying in base paints, and Trinidad would finish them, sign them, and pay Morales a fee. Furthermore, Morales apprenticed under another artist named Inday Cadapan, further expanding his artistic horizons. As Morales embarked on his solo career, his early paintings primarily featured solitary figures, reminiscent of his teacher's style. However, he soon realized the importance of finding his own artistic voice. Encouraged by Mario Alcantara, Morales began to push himself and break away from the influence of William Yu's style. To establish a universal appeal for his figures, Morales deliberately removed some of the intricate details from their faces, hands, and feet. This decision was motivated by his desire to transcend cultural boundaries and create art that would be appreciated by people from various backgrounds. Morales understood that some parts of the world harbored racial discrimination, especially towards Filipinos, and he wanted his art

to be inclusive and relatable to all viewers. The intention was not to erase his Filipino roots but to ensure that his art would be accessible to a wider audience. Despite his undeniable Filipino heritage, Morales often encounters the misconception that he is a Mexican artist. This misunderstanding highlights the universality of his art and its ability to resonate with people from different cultures and backgrounds. With his Neo-Morales-ism style, Adrian Reyes Morales continues to captivate art enthusiasts around the world. Through his creative and thought-provoking works, Morales invites viewers to explore themes of identity, cultural inclusivity, and the power of artistic expression. As a Filipino artist, Morales not only represents his heritage but also serves as an ambassador for the collective human experience through his captivating artwork.

a filipino artist with modernist and minimalist temperament A Filipino artist, was born in Surigao del Sur
and spent his early years in a humble environment with minimal resources. Despite the challenges, Clar's determination and passion for the arts led him on a remarkable journey that would eventually establish him as a prominent figure in the Filipino art scene. After completing his Bachelor of Science in Journalism in Manila, Clar ventured into the corporate world, initially working as a corporate writer at Dutch Boy and later at the Local Water Utilities Administration. These professional experiences provided him with a solid foundation in writing, photography, and magazine design, honing his skills and nurturing his creative sensibilities. It was during his tenure in the corporate world that Clar's latent passion for painting began to emerge. The years spent crafting engaging narratives and visually captivating layouts for magazines laid the groundwork for his transition into the world of visual arts. Upon retiring from his corporate career, Clar delved into the realm of painting, drawing upon his diverse experiences to inform and inspire his artistic endeavors. South East Asian Artists Magazine
Clar's artistic style can be best described as modernist, characterized by a minimalist temperament that reflects a profound simplicity and elegance in his works. Despite lacking formal training in painting, his approach to art is deeply rooted in symbolism, employing techniques that evoke a sense of introspection and contemplation in the viewer. The absence of formal training allowed Clar to explore unconventional and unorthodox methods, resulting in a unique and distinctive artistic voice. His paintings often embody a sense of depth and complexity, inviting viewers to unravel layers of meaning and interpretation. Through his symbolistic approaches to painting, Clar transcends traditional artistic boundaries, offering a fresh perspective that challenges conventional norms and expectations. In his works, Clar masterfully navigates the interplay of form, color, and space, creating compositions that exude a sense of harmony and balance. His artistry is a testament to the power of intuition and instinct, as he fearlessly experiments with different visual elements to convey his artistic vision.

isiting Borobudur, Indonesia has truly been an unforgettable experience for me. Along with other talented Filipino artists, I had the opportunity to showcase my artwork through an exhibit titled Expression: Cross Border Visual Art Exhibition. With the support of the Philippine Embassy of Jakarta, this exhibition was made possible by the generous assistance of Mr. Roy Espinosa of Filarts and Mr. Umar Chusaeni of Limanjawi Art house. With the success of our exhibit, we found ourselves with enough free time to explore the region. One of the most incredible moments of our trip was visiting the famous Borobudur temple. As we walked around, we were able to truly experience the history of the ancient temple. Every intricate detail of the temple taught us something new, and it was a great educational experience. Another highlight of our trip was climbing the Dieng Plateau early in the morning. We woke up before sunrise, equipped with our blank canvases and paints. As the sun began to rise, we were able to see the beauty of the surroundings in a new light. The moment was so magical, we decided to sing along. One thing that stuck with me during our trip was how accommodating and authentic the people of Borobudur are. I met new friends and was amazed at their kindness and hospitality. South East Asian Artists Magazine
Overall, I am so grateful for the opportunity to have visited Borobudur, Indonesia. From the success of our Expression: Cross Border Visual Art Exhibition to the incredible moments of experiencing the region's natural wonders, this trip felt like a dream come true. I will always remember and cherish every moment spent in such a beautiful place.

et the glitters, the light of your eyes, your secrets and beauties that make you who you are, stay with you. Stay pure and clean! Live without anyone noticing you. Live so that; No one, but no one should know that you are a drop in the sea, or a sea in the drop. Live such a life; Let not even a tiny fish understand that you are a sea. Otherwise you will perish. They take from you everything that makes you you, everything that makes you valuable. Then; you're done. You disappear. I have never taken pleasure in the praise of arrogant people and those who do not understand art. They are always; They told what they could see, not what they couldn't see. Artist, you who call yourself an artist; Are you so far from secrets that a wise man can discover it right away; Are you waiting to be discovered by many knowledgables? Looking into the eyes of each praiser; you are smiling. Hide your secrets, inner world, and mood in your painting, in your work; Let some who look at your picture understand you, some understand a little, and only a few people understand you very little. Some don't understand at all, only you understand..! But no one should understand at least half of your work. Just you..! Only you know, you understand..! Discovery and fame means others own and market what you have. What happens next? Your mood cannot afford to produce as before. Then you start babbling. They say, "The man sells his signature, not his picture." What a pain. South East Asian Artists Magazine

Such so-called artists; It comes from those who try to sell their so-called non-existent works that were previously inflated with air bubbles blown into them. There are pictures on display in the display, but there are actually not. The so-called artist stole from him and plagiarized him, he has nothing of his own. If you add copyists to these, see what state the art is in? Those who stole it, those who came out as me… Hey hey hey,
many of them became famous! Wow Wow wow.! I am not at all surprised that those who copy other people's pictures and present them as their own are so stupid and unintelligent. Because in their own brains, crops, eyeballs, fingers with pencils and brushes, they do not have a soul, creativity or anything else of their own. The Museum and Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art The Museum and Gallery
Modern Art
s dedicated to collecting, preserving, and interpreting developments in the late 19th century to post-World War II art through 1970’s (Modern Art) and 1970’s to the present (Contemporary Art) in all media and creating a welcoming environment for its public appreciation. The Museum promote understanding and interest in art and artists through art shows and exhibitions, curatorial research and publications, and a variety of educational programs, including lectures, guided tours, and workshops.
Modern Art includes artistic work produced during the period extending roughly from the 1860s to the 1970s, and denotes the styles and philosophy of the art produced during that era. The term is usually associated with art in which the traditions of the past have been thrown aside in a spirit of experimentation. More recent artistic production is often called contemporary art or postmodern art.
The Museum is an organic, changing place. Although all the works seen are part of our permanent collection, in order to show the full range of our holdings - over 2,000 objets d’art - and to accommodate important temporary exhibitions, certain works must occasionally be taken off view.
Contemporary Art is the art of today, produced in the second half of the 20th century or in the 21st century. Contemporary artists work in a globally influenced, culturally diverse, and technologically advancing world. Some define contemporary art as art produced within “our lifetime”.
