This story illustrates not only the technique of cuentos encadenados (chained bilingual storytelling), but also the multicultural principle that if you have confidence in who you are, you can follow your own beliefs, overcome the temptations of those who would lead you astray, and live in peace in a world of differences. The multicultural man is one who is not threatened by differences, because he is secure in his own identity. A proper multicultural curriculum is one in which all students learn because it uses techniques that address the learning style of all students in an environment safe for differences.

The Man, the Boy and the Donkey

Aesop fable

Fábula de Esopo

A man and his son were on their way to market with their burro.

As they were walking along, a neighbor called out to them, y el hombre les dijo al señor y a su hijo: "You fools, what is a burro for but to ride upon?”

So, the man changed places with the boy, y siguieron el viaje con el hombre montado, until they passed two women. One turned to the other and said: "Shame on that lazy lout, riding, while his poor little son has to trudge along!

They walked along, with the people laughing, and the burro kicking, until they crossed Market Bridge, when the burro got one foot loose, kicked out, and caused the boy to drop the pole.

In the struggle, the burro fell off the bridge and drowned.

The Man, the Boy and the Donkey

Aesop fable

A man and his son were on their way to market with their donkey.

As they were walking along, a neighbor called out to them:

"You fools, what is a donkey for but to ride upon?”

Oh, the poor guy, they call him crazy just because he walks alongside of his donkey! So they thought, and thought.

So, the man put the boy on the donkey, and they continued the journey until they passed a group of men, and one shouted: "Look at that lazy kid, letting his father walk while he rides!”

Oh, the poor kid, they call him lazy for riding the donkey! They didn’t know what to do, so they thought and thought.

So, the man changed places with the boy, and continued the journey, until they passed two women. One turned to the other and said: "Shame on that lazy lout, riding, while his poor little son has to trudge along!

"Now what is the matter?", he demanded. The people said, "Aren't you ashamed of overloading that poor little donkey, you and that hulking son of yours?

Oh, the poor little donkey! Why didn’t they think of the load they put on the donkey? They didn’t know what to do, so they thought and thought.

Fábula de Esopo

Un hombre y su hijo iban al mercado con su burro. Un vecino les gritó: “Locos, para que sirve un burro, si no para montarlo?

¡Ay el pobre hombre, que le llaman insensato por caminar al lado de su burro. No sabía que hacer. Así que pensaron, y pensaron.

Bueno, el hombre puso el muchacho montado en el burro, y siguieron el viaje hasta que pasaron un grupo de hombres, y uno de los hombres gritó: “¡Miren ese jóven perezoso, montado y su pobre padre tiene que caminar!”

¡Ay, el pobre muchacho, que la llaman perezoso por montar al burro! No sabían que hacer, Así que pensaron, y pensaron.

Bueno, el hombre cambió lugares con el muchacho, y siguieron el viaje con el hombre montado, hasta que pasaron dos mujeres. Una exclamó a la otra: “¡Qué vergüenza, ese hombre ocioso montado, y su pobrecito niño caminando!”

¡Ay, el pobre hombre, que le regañan por dejar caminar a su hijo!

Así que el hombre puso el niño junto con él, y siguieron el viaje, los dos montados. Para entonces habían llegado al pueblo, y la gente se burlaba de ellos, hasta que el hombre no aguantó más. “¿Ahora qué?” La gente dijo, “¿No le da vergüenza sobrecargar ese pobre burrito, usted ese jóven gordo?

¡Ay, el pobre burro!. ¿Porqué no pensaron de la carga que le impusieron? No sabían que hacer. Así que pensaron, y pensaron.

Cortaron un palo largo.

ataron las patas del burro al palo,

y levantaron el palo a sus hombros,

y siguieron el viaje con el burro colgado del palo con las patas atadas.

Continuaron, la gente riéndose, y el burro luchando, hasta cruzar el puente del mercado, y el burro se soltó, pateó fuerte, y el muchacho dejó caer el palo, y el burro se cayó al rio.

“Ahora van a aprender” dijo un hombre que había visto todo.
