This portfolio is the collection of my academic works. The selected projects show my learning process during university and demonstrate my personal architectural exploration. University was a great platform for me to explore affinity between space, technology and abstract. However the information flow is rapid today, there is a lot I have yet to learn and discover so many possibilities, for this reason I look forward to new opportunities with excitement and anticipation.

The Doncaster Rail line was originally proposed in the 1920s , when this part of the city was further developed. Residents are growing impatient for this public infrastructure, burdened by increasing traffic and expensive car reliance. This proposal has once again been aware with the government putting 6.5 millions for the feasible study which discuss the “stopping all stations route” which travels underground for 17km from Victoria Park station in Collingwood to Doncaster Hill; and the “Rapid Transit Route” which only stop at Kew and Doncaster Park and Ride. The government was prefer the “stopping all station route”.

CHING YU lIAO 256108

The “stopping all stations” route proposed by the government will place the stations in the retail and main street areas in each community. This process requires costly underground tunnels and equally costly compulsory acquisition of land from these commercial zones. Instead of the underground route, I propose using the median strip along the Eastern Freeway for the rail line with more stations by looking at the characteristic on the geographical feature, to increase efficiency of the route since the Eastern Freeway is largely comprised of a deep cutting, with the road on a lower level, and bridges running across it. This level change can be used as an opportunity to place the station and connect the communities. I have designed a typical station to illustrate how this system could work to connect the local neighbourhoods up on natural ground level with the fast infrastructure below while also introducing new programme in between. The typical station comprising of bus station for interchange purpose, carpark for park-and-ride, supermarket, etc. This station can serve as a neighborhood center to connect the communities divide by the bridges and also introducing commercial activities into the area. So that the new station do not need to acquire land for carpark, public activities and the station itself. This idea of this typical station can be apply to other similar situation and can prevent the rupture cause by the freeway or by inserting typical stations in other developed area.

Parametric modeling means efficiency and precise. It simplified the process of form generation into digital scripts, facilitates the popularization of remarkable forms. However, the origin of parametric design, in our understanding, is not just the logic and program. Similar to the relationship of tools and craftsman, the innovation in thoughts and creation of methods is the initial motivation. What we are exploring for is the basic inspiration of design. We are not seeking technique but a way to link the digital method and reality world. Face with the battlefield of Parametricism, architects has some kind of similarity with the people who first leave the cave in innocence era. We re-explore the character of material in new shape; re-create tools to test the potential and limitation of matter and form. The possible design quality behind script is what we aimed to achieve.

Coordinate with the parametric working method, we desire to mold a system which sysnthesis the form finding process and material articulation. This systematic gesture can be treated as the base of our machine aesthetic. Such value will be coherence in our design of touch stone, spatial model, culture model and façade prototype. In this system, tension and compression of material, visual and private quality of space will be represented in the media of force and field. They concentrated in the flow of our façade and the altering space enclosed in it. The space generation idea is clear and we start to develop more on how these spatial idea can be apply and contribute to the use of the space. several spatial types were formed at this stage in regarding to the function, privacy and publicness of space and also in consideration of how the exhibition space works since it was the one most important function. To illustrate the effect of transforming surface according to the force, we use nylon and steel frame to create an operational model. The motion of surface in this model shows that the appreciation of the character of space it created. Timber waffle modle provide a precise description of the space, this gives us a testing ground of what do we looking at and what we don’t want. The solid and non controlable spatial formation weaken the expression of interation of force developed from the first spatial model. This lead us to think of what can we do about how to make it precie at the same time fluid.

As the same method for faรงade prototype, in the design of construction sequence, the whole faรงade panelized so it would be more economic and also easier to carry the precast components to the site.

The facade and the bridge is acting as a craft object sitting in flinders lane. The iconic crafting sense of the building will surely make Craft Victoria a landmark.

This project requires a building to contain mainly classroom and practice area for students. At the same time, this is a good opportunity for the school and student to showcase brick layering techniques and methodology. The building is separated by programs since the nature function of the school are noisy versus quiet; dirty versus clean; physical versus mental. In Terms of form, the initial circulation core idea was express through a massing form, just simply seperate the three function. After that the idea of front house and factory building was explored, industrial profile was express and still maintaining the core idea. Lastly is the alteration of traditional industrial profile. The “Front House” stand in a more expressive form to indicate its role to serve. The “idustrial” part which is the prac floor look like a traditional factory warehouse building in form, but its identity is express through its skin. The skin treat the building in a more playful way. The front house is standing out from the literal noughts and crosses. The other part of the front house is more open a use of jali to create a more engaging interior. The skin of the Prac floor is the combination of industrial facade and playful facde, these two facade intertwine together. The use of glazed brick on the skin to create a more lifly facade to traditional building function. Another Idea is to create a main horizontal core for circulation withthe enhancement of a private courtyard. The core in the middle serve the office and prac floor, teacher and student have to pass through the middle part of the building to get through to functions. The function in the middle is classroom, changing, and gathering space to provide circulation. It act as a main resting place for student and a transitional space for teacher to prac floor. For material transfer, it is just simply enter rom the side of the building directly to the mat lift and the prac floor.

/ application of modular

house This design is for modular holiday house. The idea is how family can engage with each other within a architectural space and how people activities can shape and influence the appearance of architecture. The wall unit of the house is movable so that it can create different space configuration according to different needs. The engagement between the adult and kids is maximise through they have interaction during the configuration of space.

/ modular

village Modular village is an extension of the modular house. It contains multipurpose space on the ground eg: retails and sport courts to serve the surrounding. The ground building is fixed where the upper modular units can be configured to desire height and mixing purpose to allow the occupants to get along with each other easily. The main faรงade element is shading like structure to allow occupants to adjust the shade to control sun light intake and views; they can also control their privacy level.

This is a design project for an easy pop up information centre. I made this pop up centre an exhibition space at the same time since it can attract more attention from the public if it has a more interesting outer skin. It was a simple concept just to put openUpper Lv Plan 1: 50 able doors on a container size box, but this allows the space to be connected in and out. It also creates a change of experience in level changing. It is easy to setup and transport, so it literally can place in anywhere.

/ kingspan pavilion

THE BLUR THE BLUR Pavilion explores the idea of ‘timelessness’ and ‘spacelessness’ in terms of form and material. Simplicity, clean and elegance are the basic qualities of ‘timeless’ architecture. The pavilion took shape of a pure block form cladded with one single material. A ‘spaceless’ interior is created by a sense of displacement in space and boundary. With the usage of WallLite polycarbonate panels by Kingspan as the medium, it brings up an ambiguous boundary that contrasts the notion of static and movement and brings the dynamic between the sitting spaces and circulation spaces. Layers of panels are erected within the elegance skin forming layers of spaces with various opacity levels. Inside these intimate spaces within the 3.6 m x 12 m dimension, the degree of visibility is determined by the spaces between the people and the panels and angle of visions, forming an intriguing relationship between the people, challenging the perception of proxemics in social realm. From the entrance moving inward, the presence of seats and the narrow spaces involuntarily slow down the movement, contrasting the speed of movement on the outside. The layering of panels also projects disorienting illusions that muddle the sense of space and boundary. Thus the unique quality of WallLite Panel serves perfectly for the theme.
