Royston First UPDATE - Spring

THE RETAILER SHOW REEL Following on from the success of the three short films featuring the town’s eateries, Royston First commissioned a Retail show reel.

Shot by a professional film crew over a period of two weeks, the new film features 83 Royston retailers in under 2 minutes! Using time-lapse filming techniques and advanced editing technology, the watcher will be taken on a whirlwind tour of the town’s retail offer.

Obviously the intention of the new film is to boost the visibility of our

retailers whilst at the same time promoting awareness of the breadth and depth of Royston retail. Filming an actor in 83 different shops holding a different product each time has enabled a powerful message to be delivered at breakneck speed without challenging boredom thresholds!

ROYSTON INFORMATION CENTRE ARRIVING SOON AT A LIBRARY NEAR YOU… Royston First is in the process of delivering a number of initiatives designed to increase awareness of the town and to provide more and better information about Royston.

Available to be seen at any performance in the Royston Picture Palace from May onwards!

WEBSITE PROPOSED FOR ROYSTON TOWN In support of all our activities promoting our town, Royston First is proposing to produce a unifying website that will bring together all aspects of Royston.

A project is about to get underway to review the feasibility of linking disparate online information about Royston, contained on dozens of individual sites, to a single umbrella site - for use by residents and visitors alike.

The most visible project will be the new Royston Information Centre (artist’s impression below) - which is about to be constructed in Royston library. This permanent installation is being staged in partnership with the

Hertfordshire Library Service with financial support from the Trustees of the Royton Cave. Its purpose will be to disseminate information about Royston and to generate interest in, and knowledge of, our town. The

Royston library will be the home of the new Information Centre

central focus of the display will be an interactive screen designed to encourage involvement from the younger generation. Also, a range of materials will be available to provide essential information on Royston and its attractions.

Supporting materials being designed or reformatted in support of the RIC include: town maps; a guide to clubs and societies; a Royston accommodation guide; and the town trail (which we are also in the process of refurbishing by replacing missing plaques, etc.)

Royston Focus Royston First continues to produce updated versions of our guide to shopping within the BID area and to distribute it to 15,000 local households.

More information will follow as the project progresses.

Events supported by Royston First since Summer 2014 This new event was based out of a donated shop. The entertainment included walking-the-plank, pirate juggling, cutlass painting, pirate badge making and pirate face painting. There was also a fancy dress competition where the best and most original dressed pirates were photographed to appear in the pirate photo gallery.

In addition to all the activities in the pirate lair, there was also a Pirate Treasure Trail.

Participants were issued with clues and a map which led them around the town centre in search of treasure hidden in the shops.

With attendance estimated at over 1,000 - this event is set to be repeated in 2015.

GREAT FAMILY FUN!

Run on the second Saturday in December for the third year running, 2014’s trail proved more popular than ever. The number of participants almost trebled to 443 - which necessitated the frantic photocopying of trail maps and the hasty wrapping of extra presents! However, every child got to follow the trail and receive a present from Santa. (Support on the day from Royston Round Table was much appreciated).

Early on in the process of delivering initiatives to promote Royston, the need for a unified identity quickly became apparent.

The various images that currently exist are either not in the public domain or have reserved meanings.

Accordingly a speedy ‘pre-project’ was conceived to produce a logo that depicts recognisable features of Royston in a manner suitable for use on a wide variety of items.

The explanation of the individual elements contained within the design are shown below for those that are interested. We are content that we have arrived at an attractive and usable image... and all within a selfimposed time limit of 3 weeks.

Chocolate Trail

On the Saturday before Easter Sunday, Royston First staged the annual ‘Easter Chocolate Trail’ - supported by the Town Crier, The Mayor and the Easter Bunny. For the tenth consecutive year, children were tasked with spotting chocolate rabbits in 12 retailer’s windows and then entering a prize draw for a 1.2 kg chocolate egg. This year 241 correct entries were received and the town was, once again, buzzing from 10:00 ‘til 12:30 © Clive Porter

Although centralised information has been available for some years, the new guide will feature just accommodation available within the town boundaries. It is envisaged that as much useful information as possible will be listed, including interior and exterior photographs.

People living in Royston will most likely be aware of the plethora of groups available to join in the town. However, it is unlikely they will know that in total there are more than 200 such groups in our town! This guide is an attempt to list all active groups for reference by residents and visitors alike.

Royston Maps

This event continues to go from strength to strength with ever increasing numbers of events and participants and an ever greater variety of performers. Royston First is a core funder of the festival and has committed funds for the next four years to enable the event to move forward with confidence.

An accurate base map has been produced and is due to be re-worked for a variety of purposes. At present this includes: the Town Trail; local amenities; and retailers, pubs, restaurants and takeaways.
