❧ Congratulations to 5th Graders, Scarlett Bonner, Ammara Elsevier, Kiki Gushue, Annie Ho, Camille Lawson, Zoe McCuen and Abby Minkin for placing 4th in the Battle of the Books in April. They competed against other area schools and were 5th Grade team great ambassadors for our school.
❧ Written in response to Valentine for Ernest Mann by Naomi Shihab Nye—a recent Anne Healy Lecturer, 9th Grader Charlotte Biggs had a poem published on the website of the Academy of American Poets. Her poem is called Things That I Hide/Are Hidden. Charlotte Kim
2017 who had a perfect 3-0 at the 2014 Maryland State Girls Championship, held on January 11 in Rockville, Maryland. As a result, she is the 2014 Maryland State Girls Chess champion and will represent Maryland at the National Girls Invitational Tournament in Orlando, Florida in July.
❧ Congratulations to Ella Frankel, 2014 who was awarded the National Merit University of Maryland Scholarship.
❧ Congratulations to Aminah Brooks, 2015 who participated in the Baltimore ACT-SO competition in architecture and won a bronze medal! The NAACP’s Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO) is an annual achievement program Aminah Brooks designed to recruit, stimulate, and encourage high academic and cultural achievement among African-American high school students. Aminah’s work began last summer in The Next Step at Morgan State University.
Lower School Class of 2021
❧ Congratulations to Caitlin Curtis, 2015 who placed 3rd in the Sole of the City 10K in April in the female 16–19 age group. She also came in 2nd in her age group at the Columbia Triathlon in May!
❧ Didi Lowitt, 2015 spent a weekend in May in Princeton, NJ at the U.S. Rowing Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships. Her Varsity 4 boat made it to the semifinal, and Caitlin Curtis her Varsity Pair boat won gold! She and her partner (from Bryn Mawr) went on to compete at Junior Nationals and won the Women’s Youth 2-C Final in mid-June. ❧ Congratulations to Kallie Parchman, 2010 who was awarded the Meyer Humanitarian Award at Yale. The award is given each year to a varsity athlete in Didi Lowitt (on the right) the senior class “whose character exemplifies selfless devotion along with compassion and concern for their team and the community at Yale and beyond.”
❧ Congratulations to Betsy Angel, 2012 who was named Colonial Athletic Associate (CAA) Rookie of Week for lacrosse at JMU for two consecutive weeks and for making the CAA All-Rookie Team. Betsy was also voted the 2014 All-State Division I Women’s Lacrosse Rookie of the Year by the Virginia Sports Information Directors!
❧ Congratulations to Audrey Todd, 2012 who was named Ivy Offensive Player of the Week in April as well as being named to the All-Ivy League First Team.
❧ Kudos to Katherine Wright, 2012 who was named to the Dean’s List at Bucknell for fall semester and to Maureen Downs, 2012 who was named to the Dean’s List at Wofford for spring semester.

sports wrap•up Varsity Badminton Varsity badminton finished the season 9-1 and for the third time in four years, won the IAAM A Conference team championship. The JV team of Caroline Meek, 2015 and Libby Kluttz, 2015 qualified to 2014 Varsity Badminton team play in the tournament and reached the finals of the consolation doubles. Casey Wong, 2016, the No.1 singles player, won the singles title while Kristin Polk, 2014 and Meghan Shippe, 2014, the No. 1 varsity doubles team, reached the finals of the doubles, where they fell to teammates Isabella and Natalie Thomas, 2014, the No. 2 varsity team. Five players, the most of any school, were selected as IAAM All-Stars.
Varsity Softball Varsity softball won the IAAM C Conference championship after not fielding a program for the previous two years. The Reds defeated Baltimore Lutheran 11-5 in the championship game and ended the season with a 12-2 record. Kathryn Foreman, 2017 pitched every inning of every game, averaging over 10 strikeouts per game and ending the season with 141 strikeouts. She also tied for the team lead in RBIs. Allison Leatherbury, 2017 led the team with a .649 batting average and .755 on base percentage. She also led the team with extra base hits and was second on the team in steals. Grace Laria, 2015 batted over .500 with an on-base percentage of .600. She led the team in at bats, hits and stolen bases and was tied for the lead in RBIs.

Varsity Spring Track and Field Spring track and field broke seven school records and finished the season in third place. Individual records included Victoria Peltier, 2017 in the 300m hurdles (53.9), Sally Askew, 2017 in the 800m (2:39), Emily Roebuck, 2016 in the 400m (1:05.8), Maria Cole, 2016 in the shot put (2410), and Tenae Hodge, 2016 in the discus (582). New records were also set by the 4x400m relay team of Emily Roebuck, Sally Askew, Mellie Poggi, 2015 and Mollie Keyser, 2016 (4:26) and the 4x800m relay team of Caitlin Curtis, 2015 and Mellie, Sally and Mollie, which went undefeated in the regular season.
Varsity Golf The varsity golf team went 3-1-1 in the regular season and was in third place after day one in the championship tournament. However, due to rain, the second day of the tournament was canceled and the results from the first day stood. Head Coach Tara Kramer, who led the team to seven consecutive championships explained, “We felt like there was some unfinished business. Our mission for next year has already been established: put ourselves in position to earn the title and bring the bowl back home!”
Crew The varsity and novice teams competed in four regattas and sent one varsity boat to the Stotesbury Cup Regatta in Philadelphia. Notable performances for the novices came at the America Rows Baltimore Duels, where the Reds won the novice 8+, and at the St. Andrews Regatta in Delaware, where RPCS boats placed both first and second. The Varsity ended its season with a strong performance in Philadelphia, earning personal bests in the Senior 4 and placing 33rd in the nation.

Other Spring Season Highlights:
2014 Varsity Softball team
Varsity Lacrosse Varsity lacrosse finished with a 15-4 record which included wins over St. Stephen St. Agnes, Manchester Valley and C. Milton Wright. After tournament wins over Bryn Mawr and Notre Dame Prep, they competed in the IAAM A Conference Championship game, where they lost a hard fought game to defending champion Mcdonogh 16-13. They concluded the season ranked No. 3 in the Baltimore Sun, and No. 8 in the Nike/US Lacrosse National High School Girls poll.
Red Hot Run On Sunday, April 27 RPCS held its fourth
annual Red Hot 5K Run and One Mile Family Fun Walk with over 500 participants registered! Proceeds from the race will benefit the Endowment for Faculty Compensation and the Endowment for Student Financial Assistance. Congratulations to the following RPCS students, parents and employees who placed in the Red Hot Run: Daniela Mendez-Trendler, 2022 was the top RPCS student and top female in the 10 and under age group; Hannah Rhea, 2019 was the top female in the 11–15 age group; Molly O’Hern, 2016 was the top female in the 16–19 age group; Miriam Goldstein, 2009 was the top Alumnae and the top female in the 20–29 age group and her mother, past parent Andrea Goldstein was the top female in the 60+ age group; Kevin Osten was the top male RPCS parent; Perry Shutt was the top female RPCS parent; Bill Souser, Upper School History was the top male employee and third place overall male; Sarah Cody, Assistant Director of Communication was the top female employee and third place overall female; Kim Daly, Communication Associate was the top female in the 30–39 age group.

Betty Yates Memorial Award which is presented to the player or person who has demonstrated unselfish dedication, limitless support and exceptional leadership to the University of Virginia’s women’s lacrosse team.
❧ Congratulations to three members of the class of 2010, Leah Hairston, Tammy Holley, and Meredith Callis, who were nominated to Phi Beta Kappa.
❧ Juliet Randall Fisher, 1993 was appointed by Governor O’Malley in May to be Judge of the Orphans’ Court of Baltimore County filling the seat vacated by Judge Colleen Cavanaugh.
❧ Congratulations Monica Butler Mitchell, 1998 who was honored by the Girl Scouts of Central MD as one of five Distinguished Women. GSCM honors five women in the community “who lead amazing lives guided by the values of Girl Scouting” each year.
❧ Deborah Patterson, 1974 and a former instructor in the Kaleidoscope program, was the force behind bringing five life-sized elephant sculptures to Druid Hill Park as a way to beautify the area and slow traffic at a problematic intersection. Deb is the founder and director of ARTblocks, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to help communities transform their neighborhood through their own ideas and art, otherwise known as creative place making. ❧ Peggy K. Wolf, Director of Admissions, has been awarded the prestigious E.B. Hirsh Lifetime Achievement Award by The Federations of Jewish Women’s Organizations created in honor of past Federation President E.B. Hirsh. When asked what she would offer today’s youth, E.B. replied, “Participate! Get Involved! Study! Attend Religious Services!” Peggy embodies the sentiments E.B. expressed, is very active in the community herself and encourages others to get involved. She is the immediate past president of Baltimore Hebrew Congregation. ❧ In April, Carolyn Parker, Grades 9–12 School Counselor was a panelist on behalf of Loyola University Maryland’s School Counseling Chi Sigma Lota honor society. The panel served to give students in the school counseling master’s program a better understanding of school counselor jobs.
❧ Bill MacDonald, Upper School Math, presented his work and experience with a Virtual High School (VHS) program at a conference of the Association of Independent Schools in New England (AISNE), held in April at the VHS headquarters in Maynard, Massachusetts. His presentations were entitled The DNA of a Successful Online Learning Program and Increase Opportunities with Blended and Online Learning.

who was inducted into the Dutch Athletic Hall of Fame at Holland Hall, an independent school in Tulsa, OK in May. Lori was inducted as a part of the 1983 Women’s Tennis Team. who has worked with Wired Safety and iSafe America to create educational materials about cyber bullying. Wired Safety created a new toolkit to help teachers and included a few of Wendy’s materials on cell phone safety, password security and safe gaming in their toolkit!
