As expected, winter finally arrived. The snow and ice are either falling or already on the ground, making it difficult, if not impossible, to go out for a ride. That means it must be show season. There are only two International Motorcycle Shows (IMS) in the Midwest region since the demise of the Novi and the single Indianapolis shows. The Cleveland IMS is scheduled for January 29-31, 2016 at the IX Center near the airport. BMW Motorcycles of Southeast Michigan has reserved two buses to make the trip over to Cleveland. The $55 fee includes the bus trip over and back, admission to the show, and food and refreshments on the return trip. It’s a deal. If you’re interested in joining them, reserve your spot asap. One bus is full and the other is filling quickly. The Chicago IMS is set for February 12-14, 2016 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont. The 2nd Annual Indianapolis Motorcycle Expo is scheduled for February 19-21, the weekend after the Chicago IMS. The Indianapolis show is the newest in the neighborhood and seems to have quite a schedule. Check out their ad on page 3 for more details. There are also a variety of swap meets scheduled in the area over the next couple months. There’s no reason to sit home in your jammies

watching TV when you could be out enjoying the company of friends and fellow riders in a motorcycle-infused environment. We hope you enjoy this issue. We profile the retiring Phil White, owner of Phil’s Cycle in Waterford, Michigan, for this issue. After 48 years working on Hondas (he is known as the Honda doctor), he closed up shop. He’s an interesting fellow who lasted longer than most in this industry. Be sure to check out his profile. Gene Southard visited the AIM Expo (American International Motorcycle Expo) in Florida in October and offers his review in this issue. Gene is an avid rider who is, I think, riding in Thailand right about now. Can’t wait for that story. We hope you enjoy this latest example of Gene’s work.

Patrick Armitage returns with one of his Safer Riding columns. In this latest entry, he offers suggestions for what to do when stopped by the police. Speeding off is not one of his suggestions. He has some good ideas that we hope will be useful to you. We also reviewed HarleyDavidson Vance boots this month. Made by Wolverine, a Michigan company, these boots are well made and durable. If you want to know more, you’ll have to read the column. We hope you’re not suffering through the winter. We can’t do anything about it so we might as well gmake the most of it. Thank you for reading and sharing this issue with your riding buddies. Also, please buy from our advertisers. They’re great people who are working to support our industry (not to mention this magazine. OOPS! Guess I did.) See you on the road or at an event in the near future,

The Doctor is Out: Phil White Retires by Ray Peabody Another of the great little independent motorcycle shops is gone. Phil White, also known as the Honda Doctor, has retired. Mr. White was known around the State for his expertise with Honda motorcycles. His retirement and the closing of his shop, Phil’s Cycle Service in Waterford, Michigan, is a loss to motorcycle community. At 16, Mr. White began working at K&W Cycle in Utica. A year later, he moved to the new motorcycle assembly department at Anderson’s Honda on Telegraph in Bloomfield Hills. He eventually took over as the department manager before his mentor, Will Schram, who recognized his innate mechanical skill, suggested he become a Honda mechanic. Mr. White took Mr. Schram’s advice and began training. Mr. White continued working in Anderson’s service department even after he started his own shop in a building that had previously been the home to his family’s restaurant at 1426 Crescent Lake Road. He worked at Anderson’s during the day and at his own shop in the evenings. Mr. White continued working at Anderson’s until 1968 when, because of a lack of work and, therefore, income during the winter

6

months, he took a job at General Motors Truck and Bus. He continued working his business in the afternoons even after he joined GM. Three years later, Mr. White quit his job at GM because he wasn’t getting promoted and decided to focus his efforts on building his motorcycle shop business. At first, a friend helped him. However, as the business grew, the help of a friend wasn’t enough. He would eventually keep eight employees busy and working in his shop. Mr. White was guided in his business by the mantra - Do good work and customers will come back. It worked. His reputation grew, as did his sales and profits. The more work he did, the larger his customer base became. His success persuaded him to look for other products and services that would enable him to grow his business even more. In the 70s, he added Phil’s Cycle Shop in the 80s. Speedway snowmobiles and mini-bikes to his offering to help maintain a constant revenue stream from season to season. He became a Hodaka dealer in 1971. Unfortunately, despite these new products and services, his business began to shrink. He exited the Speedway and

Hodaka franchises and started building custom motorcycles in the winter to sell during the riding season. In the early 80s, Mr. White took on the persona of the Honda Doctor because of his expertise with the brand. Honda franchisees didn’t much like the fact that a non-franchise motorcycle shop was promoting its Honda expertise. Andersons even filed a cease and desist order against Phil’s Cycle Service. Mr. White changed his identity to the “Doctor of Honda,” which was acceptable to both franchisees and Honda itself. By the mid 80s, the motorcycle market had collapsed and Mr. White once again looked for new markets. He began selling used cars and restoring / customizing trucks in addition to services he provided through his motorcycle shop. The used car and truck customizing aspects of his business both continued until 1995.

AIM Expo Continues Growth by Gene Southard The AIM Expo was held in Orlando, Florida on October 15-18, 2015. This was the first time I had attended this show although I have attended the Dealer Expo in Indy many times. Unfortunately, the Indy show attendance had decreased to a point that it is no longer held. This was the third year for the Orlando show and it has grown each year. The show is held in the Orange Convention Center, located just a short distance from Disney World so there are many things to do in this area. The show is open to the motorcycle trade on Thursday and Friday. That means dealers, media and anyone involved in the motorcycle trade can attend. While at the show, dealers can attend sales seminars and demonstrations of new products lines from the manufacturers and distributors. About 3,400 dealers attended this year along with 300 media people. I obtained a badge for both dealer and media. I find that I am looking at motorcycle products as a journalist now as much as a dealer. On Saturday and Sunday, the show is open to the retail public. Although you cannot purchase products at the show, you can see and compare many products that are available from the 566 exhibitors in the 888,000 square foot convention center. Cam Am, Honda, Kawasaki, Kymco, Star, Harley-Davidson, Suzuki, Yamaha, and Zero all

held test rides at the northern area of the Center’s parking lot. These rides were a hit with many of the 19,000 attendees. It took me one-and-a-half days just to see the show and talk with everyone. I had heard that the legendary dirt bike rider Malcolm Smith would be autographing his new autobiography at the show. I got in line and had the opportunity to speak with Malcolm for a short while after purchasing the book. There were so many events happening during the show, it is hard to mention them all. Here are only a few. The vintage bike show and a chopper show were held Saturday and Sunday. The Supercross Museum was located on the North lot next to the test rides. The AMA Hall of Fame induction ceremony was held on Saturday night at 8:30. The new road race organization, MotoAmerica, held not only autograph sessions with their riders but also had their awards celebration on Friday night. Manufacturers of tires, riding gear, luggage, helmets, and almost anything that might interest a rider also held seminars. If you are interested in purchasing anything, from a new motorcycle to a new spark plug, you will be able to find it at the AIM Expo. If you are in the Orlando area on October 13-16, 2016, don’t miss this show. You won’t be disappointed.

Zero Below Zero - Winter Motorcycle Commute Blog Will an electric motorcycle work for commuting and transportation all-winter in frozen Duluth Minnesota? Will Aerostich gear be enough? With a lightly winterized Zero FX electric motorcycle and a closet full of Aerostich gear, some brave (or foolish) volunteer riders are going to find out. The plan is to give the Zero the full Northern Minnesota ‘Winter-Beater’ treatment by leaving it outside overnight, every night, and then outside at work all day. No warm sleeping inside nice heated garages. No periodic washes. Just loving abuse. The tires will have a few studs, the grips will be heated and the Zero’s battery will have an Aerostich-added warmer during the coldest periods because Duluth’s usual winter temps can sometimes be more than twenty below zero. To get to work, test riders will walk out to the Zero dressed in appropriate thermal layers and Aerostich gear, unplug it and Ride There. To work and home and errands everywhere. Distances from three to thirty miles across snowy, icy surface streets and highways. Even at commuting speeds, the risk of frostbite is significant, so learning to dress quickly, easily and correctly is required. We are going to learn just how much of a pain-inthe-ass the extra gear rigmarole becomes, and what it feels like to make it part of our routine. Follow how the Zero XR bike and Aerostich gear performs day-to-day, in what is sure to be some extreme winter riding conditions, by signing up to receive email blog posts, photos and videos here: http://www.aerostich.com/ zbz.

Safer Riding

Dealing with Police by Patrick Armitage

I know there are some people out there who have never had a ticket, and others who have never even been pulled over. For most of us though, a traffic-stop encounter with the police is more or less inevitable. Picture this: It is a perfect riding day, the traffic is light, and you are riding your favorite mount through Anytown U.S.A., down Main Street, at 10 mph over the limit. Suddenly, a siren sounds behind you. Looking in your mirrors, you see the familiar police cruiser with lights flashing. Officer Friendly has you in his crosshairs. A sudden thought might flash through your head; “I bet I can outrun this cop car.” While it is generally true that most bikes will outperform police cars in a drag race, there are many other things to consider. #1) If you run, you are risking your life in exchange for the possibility that you may get a ticket, a fine and points. In the worst case, you could lose your license. I don’t know about you, but I value my life, far above the highest fine or penalty that could be imposed on me. If you doubt the risk, consider the reality of the situation. In order to successfully elude a pursuing police car, you will likely have to exceed 100 mph, in areas where the speed limit is generally less than 55 mph; probably a lot less. Under these circumstances, someone looking to enter the roadway looks both ways and sees you in the distance. At the speed limit, you would be safely far enough away for the driver to enter the roadway. If you are far exceeding the speed limit, someone glancing your way will miscalculate your approach speed. If they pull out in front of you, you will likely crash. Most riders recognize that a car pulling out in front of them is one of the biggest dangers facing motorcyclists. How much more dangerous is this situation when you are fleeing a police car? #2) Bikes generally have faster acceleration, more precise handling, and higher top speeds, but the police have other advantages. The driver you are attempting to elude has had professional pursuit driver training. How much training do you have? He also has lots of resourses: a radio and many other team members anxious to join the pursuit. What if a helicopter joins in the chase? The odds that you will outrun a helicopter are near zero. You have seen the police chase videos on TV, do you want to be the next moron that t-bones a bus in a police video on the Discovery Channel? #3) The charge for which you are considering risking your life is speeding. You might not be written up at all. If you are polite, the cop might let you go with a warning. Even if you are written for the max, you might beat it in court, or at least get it reduced. Let’s consider a worst-case scenario. You were going so fast that the charge will be Reckless Driving. This is an expensive fine, and many points. If you choose to run, the Misdemeanor of Reckless Driving, gets elevated to Fleeing and Eluding, a Felony. Having a Felony conviction on your record is a big problem. You will likely do jail

www.midwestmotorcyclist.com

time and your legal expenses will be HUGE. Let’s assume that you are smart enough to pull over when signaled. Acknowledge that you know you are being pulled over by signaling with your turn signal. Ideally, pull over into a parking lot or, side street. If you must stop on the road pull off as far as possible from the roadway. This makes it safer for both the officer and you. Bring the vehicle to a stop in a reasonable fashion. Turn off the ignition and the radio. Put cigarettes out, and if you are in a car at night, turn on the interior lights. Traffic stops can be dangerous for cops, so reduce the stress as much as possible. Keep your hands on the handlebars or steering wheel where he can see them. Don’t fidget or reach for documents until the officer asks for them. Let the officer tell you why he/she is pulling you over. If they ask if you know why you were stopped say “no,” even if you know for sure why it happened. Be courteous. Many of the people an officer encounters are obnoxious rectal orifices; be a pleasant surprise to them. Do not argue with them. Pleading ignorance and making apologies might work, but you will always lose an argument with a cop at the roadside. If you are going to ask for a break, ask before they return to their car. Once they come back, it will already be over. If you show them respect, it may pay off later. Don’t automatically admit responsibility and pay the fine. Take it to court and plead your case. If you have a suit, wear it. Don’t blend in with the morons who appear in court wearing casual, dirty, or torn clothes. Do your homework, and bring any supporting evidence, photos, copies of the motor vehicle code, etc. with you. Don’t go overboard with the evidence; make it short and to the point. If you are actually guilty, and plan on pleading for leniency, talk to the cop, before the case comes up if possible, and plead your case with him/her. They have the latitude to make such recommendations to the court. If you have a good record, that can at least help to get the charges reduced. If your primary concern is to keep your record clean and point free, agree to pay the fine and request that they withhold the points from the record. The court will be more predisposed to agreeing to lesser charges, so long as they still get the cash. You were polite when they stopped you, right? I hope that this dispels any misguided thoughts that you might get the next time you are pulled over. Don’t put your life at risk for such a small payoff. While I rarely ever get pulled over, I have friends who have been pulled over many times. Most often, I, um, I mean “they,” are let go at the scene. I, er, they, also have won, or at least gotten my, ah, their tickets reduced in court.

Step Back in Time and Visit the Early Days of Hoosier Motorcycling Past and present converge when the 2nd Annual Pioneers of Hoosier Motorcycling roll into Indianapolis during the 25th Annual Indiana Motorcycle Expo. Indianapolis, IN – The sport of motorcycling has a long and rich tradition in the Hoosier State and many of the early motorcycle pioneers cut their teeth on the roads and backcountry trails throughout Indiana. They helped blaze trails and set standards that have endured through the years. These pioneer men and women are the ones who laid the groundwork for the great motorcycling opportunities of today. The Pioneers of Hoosier Motorcycling debuted last year during the 24th Annual Indiana Motorcycle Expo and was enthusiastically welcomed by young and old alike. What started as a simple conversation between Todd Jameson from Renfro Productions and Sandy Kite Hunt from Southside Harley Davidson quickly became one of the premier

motorcycling opportunities in the country. Jameson says, “Indiana is blessed with so many different motorcyclists, former shop owners, racers, hill climbers and really just motorcycle enthusiasts from all aspects. Some of these people are like walking history books.” Jay Jackson, executive director of ABATE (American Bikers Aimed Toward Education) of Indiana, contributes his leadership and experience to help position Pioneers of Hoosier Motorcycling as one of the best and most unique motorcycling events in the country. Jackson says, “The Pioneers of Hoosier Motorcycling is an opportunity to ‘learn’ about Indiana’s motorcycling history, from the people that ‘made’ Indiana’s motorcycling history. Hear stories about the rich heritage of riding in the Circle City and the Hoosier State, told by those who lived it. Become a part of history as early leaders in the fields of motorcycle racing, the industry and the lifestyle relive experiences from yesteryear. This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity is not to be missed.” The 2nd Annual Pioneers of Hoosier Motorcycling spans three days in conjunction with the 25th Annual Indiana Motorcycle Expo held at the Indiana State Fairgrounds Friday, February 19 through Sunday, February 21, 2016. It is a mingling of ages and interests with the purpose of honoring those who came before and educating and inspiring the younger riders today. The very heartbeat of the concept behind the pioneers event is the old adage, “You can’t get to where you’re going if you don’t know where you’ve been.” Nowhere else do Indiana motorcycle enthusiasts have the rare and extremely special opportunities provided by this event. Seven lively moderated sessions touch history, educate and inspire. Show-goers enjoy these sessions in a comfortable and casual setting and hear directly from those who competed fiercely during hill climbs, on race tracks and through the woods. These pioneers will also share how they have founded clubs and organizations, helped lobby for motorcycle rights, battled legislation to prohibit riding on state lands and raised money for

numerous charities. Questions from the audience are not only welcomed, they are strongly encouraged. Some of these pioneers even knew the founding members of Harley-Davidson. This opportunity to hear, learn and share the history of Hoosier motorcycling is unmatched anywhere. Although the focus of the Pioneers of Hoosier Motorcycling is on presenting motorcycling history to today’s riders, it is not all just storytelling time. Not only does the audience get to ask questions and interact with the pioneers during the moderated sessions, but afterward these pioneers are available to meet and mingle with the audience. One-on-one conversations and an incredible display of motorcycles and memorabilia make this truly a phenomenal experience. Much of this memorabilia is from the pioneers’ private collections and some has never been on public display before. There are one-of-a-kind bikes, riding apparel, trophies from historic competitions, personal photo collections and much more. Another important aspect of this event is the exchange of ideas to help protect our rights as riders and build opportunities for the future. The pioneers have helped lay the groundwork for the great riding opportunities we enjoy today and it is up to us to continue the tradition into the future for those who follow. Todd Jameson says, “The Pioneers of Hoosier Motorcycling connects those who blazed the trail with those who are on the trail now and those to follow. It is sure to be enjoyed by old and young alike.” The 2nd Annual Pioneers of Hoosier Motorcycling and 25th Annual Indiana Motorcycle Expo kick off the opening weekend, February 19-21, 2016, of the 62nd Annual Ford Indianapolis Boat, Sport & Travel Show held at the Indiana State Fairgrounds on February 19-28, 2016. A single ticket permits entrance to the motorcycle expo and Pioneers of Hoosier Motorcycling, plus all of the great features of the 62nd Annual Ford Indianapolis Boat, Sport & Travel Show, including the newest addition – the first ever Great American Fly Fishing Expo. Tickets are available at the door or may be purchased in advance at any Marsh store or online at www.indysportshow.com. Get your tickets early and don’t miss any of the excitement. Continued from page 6 - Phil’s Cycle Service During the last few years, his Honda service and used motorcycle sales business has been supported by his restoration of late 60s and 70s era Honda 750s among others. A tour of his shop shows that he’s continuing his restoration work despite the shop being closed for retail business. A brief tour illustrates Mr. White’s attention to detail on his projects. On one lift, there is a freshly powder-coated CB750 frame with new or restored components. He showed drawers of bolts with number markings ensuring that when he replaces the bolts on any restoration project, he replaces them with new bolts marked by the same numbers as those mounted on the motorcycle at the factory. off an engine stand; it looks nearly brand new. When complete, his all-original, restored 750s, of which there are four examples in his showroom, are pristine. When asked about the highlights of his 48 years in business, Mr. White smiles. “Racing,” he says. He raced scrambles on a Honda 305 Scrambler he bored to 350cc and was the State Champion in 1966 when he was sponsored by Anderson’s Honda. (That’s a picture of him racing at Mustang Acres in Brighton on the cover.) He also built and raced ice race bikes and flat trackers in Staten Lorenz’s Half Mile Racing series. At one time, Mr. White had eight motorcycles racing in that series. One of his racers, Brian Bernard, had great success on a Honda 250 Mr. White built for Daytona. That year, the only racers to move on to the Finals had to finish in first place in their heat races. Bernard won on Amateur Night and was invited to race in the Juniors heat races. He won the Juniors race and was invited to race in the final. He finished second in the Juniors final in bad weather. Had he won that race, he would have been invited to race with the pros.

Continued from previous page Nonetheless, Mr. White’s race bikes finished higher than any of the Factory Honda race bikes. Mr. White also mentored mechanic Curtis Cooper, who raced in the 500cc Class at Daytona against Rotax-mounted Brian Villela of Ron Wood Racing and Charlie Bowles. Mr. White eventually stopped racing to focus on building his business and making money.

An in-process Honda 750-4 rebuild on the engine with a 305-2 on the bench in the background.

While his retail store is closed, Mr. White, now 67, continues to sell parts and motorcycles at swap meets all over the country. When not at swap meets, he can typically be found working on his own projects in his shop or out riding his 2016 Indian Chieftain. Shops like Phil’s Cycle are quickly becoming dinosaurs. Some are still making a go of it but the corporate franchise shops with lots of money, big budgets and a diverse offering are shrinking the corners of the market that the small shops serve. Guys like Mr. White know how to fix and build things. Their skills and knowledge are invaluable to their customers, who they strive to make happy. Today, few mechanics understand the intricacies of engine tuning without plugging in a computer and following the directions it provides. Troubleshooting seems a thing from a bygone era. The guys who had intimate knowledge of the workings of engines and related systems, and could intuitively fix most any problem, are few and far between. I’m not sure that younger people know their value but, for guys like me, the loss of this expertise and these small niche shops is sad. Good luck in your retirement, Mr. White. You will be missed.

The Motorcycle Lawyer’s Favorite Tips from Readers by Jason Waechter, Esq. If you’re a regular reader, you know my team and I are always reaching out and giving back to the biker community. Whether by social media, our monthly newsletter, Youtube videos, or participating in motorcycle-centric events, we are out there trying to connect with you. The reason? We want to do whatever we can to try to prevent motorcycle crashes, injuries, and deaths; if we can’t do that, then the most important thing we do is to help injured bikers and their families. One of the great things about being so connected to the motorcycle community is all the great ideas, stories, and tips we get from readers. I thought I would share some of the best dos and don’ts we received from readers over the last year. DO assume that motor vehicle drivers are distracted; it seems to be the norm these days. Whether it’s a food, a phone, a GPS, a kid in the back seat, or a really great song, you can bet that drivers will lose focus on the road from time to time. Keep that in mind when you’re riding (or even when you drive your car), and don’t make assumptions about what other drivers will or won’t do. DON’T assume that motor vehicle drivers are deliberately “out to get” motorcyclists. True, some drivers don’t like sharing the road with motorcyclists. And, from time to time, we do read about “road rage” incidents between drivers and bikers. Still, these are not the norm; out on the roads, most of us want the same thing: to arrive safely where we’re going as efficiently as possible and with as little hassle as possible. DO use your turn signals! Not only is this common courtesy, it’s also an easy way to be predictable to other drivers. Obviously, using a turn signal isn’t a guarantee that you won’t be involved in a crash, but it can’t hurt to try, right? And remember, even if you don’t signal before making a move, that doesn’t mean you should be denied the rights and benefits afforded to you under the law if you’re involved in a crash. DON’T assume everyone else will use their

about a certified rider training course. A number of dealerships also offer practical courses for bikers. And of course, the Internet is teeming with articles, forums, blogs, and videos (including my series on motorcycle laws available on Youtube). DO use the off-season to find new gear, plan a road trip, or look for a motorcycle club in your area. Just because you can’t ride doesn’t mean you can’t spend a bit of time getting ready for when you can. Like I said, my team and I always want to hear from our readers and fans. Tell us the one thing you think all motorcyclists should know in order to improve their time on their bikes. Send your tips to writer@lawyerforlife.com and you might see them in a future article! turn signals. A 2012 study conducted by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) looked at 12,000 drivers and vehicles to see how many used their turn signals. The study showed that overall, about one-quarter of drivers (25%) didn’t signal before making a turn, and almost half (48%) didn’t signal before changing lanes. That averages out to about two billion turns or lane changes per day without a signal. DO ride prepared. Whether it’s a quick run up to the store or a cross-country tour, taking a few extra minutes to get ready before you leave is worth it. Let someone know where you’re riding, carry your phone and ID at all times, dress appropriately, and give your bike a quick check to make sure your lights and signals are working. Attorney Jason A. The Preacher Speacks About...

Harley-Davidson and Winter by Franz Hoffer Many riders live in frigid, rustic northern states where we basically lose any reasonable or sane chance of riding our motorcycles for at least three to four months. While some hearty, wellintentioned, or possibly feeble-minded souls think they can ride in those states year round, regardless of ice, slush, snow, and salt trucks/ plows that stop for nothing, I seriously question that premise. I usually end up visiting them in the hospital ICU, hearing about them on the 6 o’clock news, or reading their obituaries in the paper. The challenge: what do we do in the wicked winter time when all we see of our beloved bikes is the covered up lump sitting in the corner of the garage? It drives me nuts to go out to my truck every morning on my way to work and see that bike sitting there…cold...all alone. In a way, maybe the lack of riding is a good thing as it makes it that much more special in the spring when you wake that high horsepower V-Twin bad boy from its winter hibernation. No sound is as sweet as the tempo of a Harley engine ignited for the first time in spring. If you are like me, and I suspect you are, that first turn of the ignition, firing up the sleeping iron horse, is a rite of Spring immersed in tradition and pageantry. So what, pray tell, does one do? Well, how about attending a party like the New Year party at Wolverine Harley-Davidson as I did on January 9th. Not the best idea because we were surrounded by a couple hundred new and used motorcycles, loads of parts and accessories, motorclothes up the ying-yang, loads of knick knacks, free lunch, and multitudes of leather clad individuals. It’s almost like a mini indoor Sturgis in Clinton Township, Michigan in January. My son and grandson (all of 3 ½ years old. Can’t start them too young) accompanied me to the event. We had a blast; a welcome hiatus from the cold, snowy days indoors. On the other hand, it only heightened my longing for a nice long ride. The afternoon was interspersed with conversations with friends, some of whom I hadn’t seen for a while. There was Gary and Rose, two riders for whom I had the privilege of performing their wedding ceremony in my role as a Deacon in the Catholic Church. It took awhile but I’ve finally

16

forgiven them for scheduling their nuptials on the same day as Harley Fest. All kidding aside, they are a great couple and I am grateful to have them as friends. Then there was Gary Lewandowski who owns the Great Lakes Ride Like a Pro franchise (GLRLAP), is the safety officer for the Wolverine Hog Chapter, and the Chief Training Officer for the Macomb County Motor Patrol. The GLRLAP program has grown immensely in the past couple of years and they now have a permanent training facility in the area. If you recall, I took the course in June of 2015 and reviewed the training for this publication. It was a humbling experience but one that, because I practiced the techniques they taught, has made me a better and safer rider. I highly recommend this program to all riders. I guarantee, as skilled a rider as you think you are, you can be better. Chuck Riley, the owner of the dealership, was there. He attends almost all the events at Wolverine and enjoys milling around with the people on the sales floor. He is accessible and cares what you think about his dealership. I had a nice but short conversation with him. I talked with George DeLaNuez the General Manager/Dealer Operator. There is always a line-up of people waiting to talk with him and he seems to make time for everyone. For George, Wolverine is more than a place to work; it’s a family affair as his daughter Britni works there as well. The dealership has taken on his personality as have all the employees. Ben in sales is an excellent example. He goes out of his way to satisfy his customers. Buying a motorcycle at Wolverine is a real experience; they make you feel like royalty. My personal favorite is Carla Carlson; she is in charge of special events and marketing. She’s another employee who works hard to ensure you’re happy; always taking time out to chat with people and make sure they are receiving the quality of service they deserve. The passion and planning she puts into these special events is evident. They all come off without a hitch and run flawlessly. With all that being said, the stars are the motorcycles themselves. Without these outstanding Harley-Davidson motorcycles and trikes to sell, none of this would be possible. I am absolutely in love with the 2016 Road Glide CVO (my current ride is a 2011 Road Glide Ultra, the grandpa to the current models). The paint job, heated seats, electric

Review

Harley-Davidson Vance Boots Reviewed by Ray Peabody I have been wearing HarleyDavidson Hawkins boots (reviewed in the June 2013 issue) almost daily for more than 2 ½ years. Originally intended solely for riding, it quickly became my “go-to” boot for almost every activity. Yes, riding, but also for daily use, hiking in rough, sometimes wet, terrain, and winter boots for all purposes including clearing snow. There hasn’t been a day when I wished I had other boots.

The soft leather snugs nicely to my rather narrow feet. My feet have never gotten wet while riding in rain or walking through a shallow stream. The single downside is that, since the Hawkins are so well sealed against moisture, my feet would occasionally sweat. Despite all of the wear and tear, the boots are in good shape and still functioning as new. The Vibram sole, while slightly worn, has sufficient tread that should last for a few more years. The boots are sagging. They look beaten and they are. I plan to continue using these boots until I can no longer tie them tight or they fall apart, whichever comes first. That written, the abused look is fine for utilitarian purposes but not when you want to be styling. It’s time for new boots. I looked for another pair of Hawkins with the mental commitment that I would use the new pair exclusively for riding. Unfortunately, that model is no longer available. Because of the excellent service I got out of the Hawkins, I decided to stay with Harley-Davidson boots (made by Wolverine). After researching several models, I settled on the Vance. With an eight inch shaft height, the Vance (not sure how they come up with these names) is about three inches taller on the calf than the Hawkins. The leather feels stiffer out of the box than the Hawkins were but that could be a faulty memory. They fit my narrow feet comfortably but I TM

Midwest Motorcyclist

must pull the laces especially tight to get that snug feel. I suspect that won’t be the case as they break in. As with the Hawkins, they’re waterproof with a full-grain leather upper. I haven’t walked into the river as I did during the original Hawkins test but the Vance boots were effective in keeping my feet dry while riding in a downpour. I hope and expect that they keep my feet dry in all conditions. The dual-density polyeurethane sock footbed is supposed to help keep feet dry and is removable for easy cleaning should the boots begin to smell. (I haven’t had that problem.) Unfortunately, the Vance doesn’t use a Vibram Sole, but uses what HarleyDavidson calls “ShockAbsorbers TwinPad Comfort Technology” for a soft, stable landing on every step and is still both slip and oil resistant. It’s bonded to the boot using Goodyear welt construction. The Vance has a zipper from just above the heel to the top of the shaft to make it easier for the user to get his foot in and out of the boot. The gap isn’t large enough to allow for putting the boot on or removing it without loosening the laces, but it is a nice feature for those with bigger feet. For added safety during night riding, 3M reflective piping helps drivers see the rider in low light or darkness. While I’ve only been wearing the Vance boots for a few months, I am quite satisfied. They are good looking and comfortable. The boots have kept my feet warm and dry both on and off the bike. I expect they’ll only get better as they wear in. Available at your local HarleyDavidson dealership. Suggested retail price: $220

Second, it has all the www.shiawasseeharley-davidson.com features you get on the two-wheel motorcycles with an affordable price tag. I’m sure there’s one somewhere in my 4. Cement City future. So, if you find yourself with nothing to do this TOWN & COUNTRY HARLEY-DAVIDSON® winter, head on over to your local Harley dealer. It’s a US 12 & US 127, CEMENT CITY good remedy for those Northern State Blues! (517) 547-3333, www.cementcity-harley.com Just a quick note…I did an article some time ago on the “Harley Death Wobble” and asked for feedback from you riders who have experienced it. I received 63 5. Fremont replies. Three people said they crashed because of it but SANDY’S HARLEY-DAVIDSON® SPORT CENTER suffered no serious injuries. Five experienced the wobble 11940 N. MAPLE ISLAND RD, FREMONT but rode out of it and had the indicated rear end problems (231) 924-3020 corrected. 55 had experienced no occurrences. www.sandysharley-davidson.com Ride safe my friends…Spring is almost here!
