Exciting 2017 Motorcycles Coming Soon to a Dealership Near You by Ray Peabody 2017 looks like a great year to buy a new motorcycle. No matter what type of motorcycle you prefer - cruiser, sport, touring, retro, adventure, dual sport, off road, or beginner – there is a new model for you. What makes the motorcycles exciting this year is that manufacturers, recognizing the need for products that appeal directly to customers in the various market segments, are building motorcycles that match the demands of customers in those segments. It’s not that they haven’t built motorcycles for specific niches in the past; they’re simply getting better at incorporating the features most wanted by the enthusiasts of that niche. They can take a single platform and, with a few modifications to functionality and appearance, build a motorcycle for a specific segment. The versatility of the engine and frame are keys to this strategy. For example, a twin- or even threecylinder engine is significantly more versatile for a variety of uses than is an in-line four-cylinder engine. The following are a few examples of what we think are the most interesting new models introduced for 2017. We haven’t ridden any of these motorcycles yet but are looking forward to doing so. We’ll share our reviews with you when we do. BMW - The G 310 models are the German company’s new line of affordable, entry-level motorcycles built in India. Two models are planned: the G 310 R is a sporty naked bike and the G 310 GS is an adventure model. Both are powered by 313cc, 34 horsepower, water-cooled, fuel-injected singles with a top speed of 90 mph. The Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for the R version is $4,750. The GS model uses the same engine and frame but offers longer suspension travel (7.1 inches front and rear) which means the seat is about two inches taller than the R model. 7.1 inches isn’t a lot of travel for an off-road bike but should be sufficient for most dirt roads. MSRP for the GS model hasn’t been announced as of press time. Expect to see both models in dealerships by autumn of this year. TM

BMW is expanding the various retro versions of the RnineT to include the Racer (see picture at top) and Urban G/S models. Both are powered by the 1170cc, 110 horsepower, aircooled Boxer (flat twin) engine. The Racer looks like an old-school road racer with a stream-lined fairing and rear seat cowl. The Urban G/S model resembles an R80 G/S Dakar Rally motorcycle with a small sport fairing and a flat, red saddle. The standard model comes mounted with cast aluminum wheels and street-oriented tires but a spoked-wheel / knobby tire version with enduro foot pegs, a heat shield and steel foot brake lever are available as an option. MSRPs have not been announced for either model. Finally, BMW has extended their K 1600 model to include a Bagger. Powered by a 160 hp six-cylinder engine, this latest K bike offers the technological features of the GT and GTL with a long profile lowered in the rear and cut down windscreen. Think muscle cruiser on ‘roids and you get the idea. The one pictured was recently featured at the preview of the Detroit Auto Show. Ducati - Product extensions seem to be the “In Thing” in the motorcycle industry and Ducati is following that trend with extensions to their Scrambler model. For 2017, Ducati is introducing the Scrambler Café Racer and Scrambler Desert Sled. An 803 cc Desmodromic two valve per cylinder, air-cooled, fuelinjected L-twin powers both. The Scrambler Café Racer is equipped with 17" gold aluminum wheels and Pirelli Rosso II tires front and rear. Low set clip-ons provide for sporty, precise handling. A

number plate mounted on the side completes the retro sportbike look. The Scrambler Desert Sled is what you would expect from an off-road oriented motorcycle. It uses spoked wheels and Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR Dual Sport Tires, a reinforced tubular frame, aluminum handlebar with cross strut, and high front mud guard. According to the Ducati USA website, “Desert Sled refers to standard motorcycles over 500 cc that were modified by riders for use in the Californian desert with knobby tires, reinforced suspensions, spoked wheels and engine protection plates to protect the bike against the debris of impassable desert roads.” With only 7.9" of travel front and rear and a wet weight of 421 pounds, hard landings off big jumps might cause some damage. If you’re more interested in dirt roads than big jumps, the Desert Sled might be the ticket for your dirt explorations. When I think about Ducati super sports, my thinking wanders to those Ducati 900 SP models from the mid-90s. The styling would look dated today, but it wasn’t back then. With the launch of the 2017 SuperSport, Ducati is once again offering a beautiful road-going sportbike with an adjustable windscreen and a more comfortable seating position (according to Ducati) that is equally fun for short, spirited rides or middledistance tours. The 937 cc, 113 horsepower, 4 valves per cylinder, liquid cooled, 11 degree Testastretta engine provides the rider with plenty of juice and the quick shifter, ABS, traction control, three riding modes, and ride-by-wire throttle control suggests a combination of exhilarating performance and enhanced control no matter the type of street riding you do. If the SuperSport performs as good as it looks, it could be a winner. MSRP for the SuperSport is $12,995. Harley-Davidson – While it’s old news now, having

Morgan heard the call and volunteered. At first, she focused on telephone solicitations for donations. Later, she decided that the best way to generate the most donations was to hold a fundraiser. Morgan, coordinating her efforts with Huber and Lowe, organized a fundraiser at Ray C’s Harley-Davidson in Lapeer, Michigan (www.raycsh-d.com) on October 28, 2016. During the event, Kainz’s father rolled out his daughter’s race bike, started it up, and invited Morgan to sit in the saddle. With tears in her eyes and streaming down her cheeks, Morgan revved the bike a few times before shutting it down. It was a somber moment by any measure. The fundraiser attracted lots of attention and thousands of dollars in donations for the families. 15 days later, Morgan had her own crash in Georgia. Not long after being transported to the hospital, Morgan suffered a stroke in the left side of her brain which caused paralysis on the right side of her body. She spent three days in intensive care before being transferred to another room at the same hospital after her condition stabilized. Carey Monroe, Morgan’s mother, was impressed by the generosity of the people in the area. Not only did the family receive cards and letters of support each day they were at the hospital, people brought them food as they monitored Morgan’s recovery. She is gradually overcoming her paralysis and is now able to walk with a cane. On November 22, Morgan’s parents moved her to Mary Free Bed Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan to continue her recovery closer to home. The best news of all is that she left the hospital and returned to her home on December 21st in time for Christmas. Continued on page 15

Writing about the weather in a motorcycle magazine is lazy. Local television news, the Weather Channel, and hundreds of websites can tell you what the weather is (in case you can’t tell for yourself) and what it’s forecasted to be. That’s their purpose. The only reason for us to write about weather is when it’s been extremely bad or it’s gloriously good AND it affects motorcyclists. (Using adverbs like “extremely” and “gloriously” are also supposed to be lazy, too, so maybe that says something about me.) Anyway, it’s mid-January and by next weekend the temperature is supposed to be in the 50s. That’s worth writing about. When I heard that forecast, my first thought was: I’m going riding. 50+ degree, somewhat sunny January weather is too good to pass. My second thought: are either of my motorcycles ready to ride? The Triumph would take a little more effort to get ready to ride (install the battery, check the tires, check the oil, on-load some gas) while the Honda only needs gas, an oil check, and a tire check. The Honda it will be. This thought process started me thinking about all the things necessary to be prepared to ride when the season actually gets here. I have mulitple items on my to-do list. Most of those items are optional upgrades but a couple are

intended to make both motorcycles more reliable on longer rides away from home. Some of those items are specific to my bikes but others might be useful to others so I’ll put together some suggestions for the next (March) issue. In the meantime, check out Attorney Jason Waechter’s column, Off Season Checklist for Midwest Motorcyclists, in this issue. In addition to Mr. Waechter’s column, we also have included the profile about impressive pro flat track racer, Morgan Monroe. PIP Coverage for Persons in Out-of-State Accidents by Dondi Vesprini As by now we are in the midst of Winter, I hope you have been enjoying some Wintertime activities (aside from simply trying to stay warm) while you count the days until it is time to put the rubber back to the road. I have already talked with quite a few people who are going to escape the weather here in Michigan and head South for a warm vacation. It is not uncommon for vacationing motorcyclists to either trailer their bikes along or rent a bike to enjoy while at their warm weather destination. Unfortunately, no matter where a motorcyclist tries to escape to on vacation, there remains the fact that negligent drivers exist in every State in our Country. The question then becomes, if a Michigan resident is involved in an accident with a motor vehicle while outside the State of Michigan, is the Michigan resident still covered for his/her no fault benefits. Fortunately, the answer in the great majority of the cases is a resounding â&#x20AC;&#x153;Yes.â&#x20AC;? So long as both of the following conditions apply, the motorcyclist will be eligible for his/her Michigan No Fault benefits: 1. The accident occurs within the United States, its territories and possessions or in Canada; and 2. The injured claimant was at the time of the accident a named insured under an

Continued from page 5 - 2017 Models been first announced in August 2016, HarleyDavidson introduced their new Twin-Cooled Milwaukee-Eight 107-cubic-inch engine. According to the company, the new fourvalves per cylinder, 45 degree V-Twin engine offers 50% more intake and exhaust flow and produces 10 percent more torque. It’s counter balanced to reduce vibration, especially at highway speeds. Unfortunately, the new engine will only be available in the touring models. Honda – The 25th Anniversary CBR1000RR is not a new model but the updates made to the latest iteration of Honda’s big sportbike should interest superbike fans. The all new 998cc, liquid-cooled, dual-stage fuel injected, in-line four combined with a lighter weight and other technologies including rideby-wire throttle control, selectable torque control, electronic steering damping, and an assisted slipper clutch make this RR a cutting edge ride. Riders who would prefer the track to the roads should check out the CBR1000RR SP. Racers looking for an edge on race day might want to consider the CBR1000RR SP2. Returning to the Honda line-up in 2017 are the entry-level Rebel 500 and Rebel 300 cruisers. The Rebel 500 uses a 471cc fuel-injected parallel twin

connected to a six-speed transmission to propel it around. MSRP for the Rebel 500 is $5,999. The Rebel 300 is identical to the 500 except for the engine, a 286cc liquid-cooled, fuel-injected, single cylinder engine. MSRP: $4,399. The orignal Rebels were great starter bikes that held their value for years. Finally, Honda has extended the CRF250L model to include the CRF250L Rally. Both are powered by 249.6cc liquidcooled, fuelinjected, singlecylinder, fourstroke engines. They differ in that the Rally version has a larger fuel tank (2.7 gallons vs 2.1 gallons), Dakar-style bodywork, hand guards, a windscreen, skid plate and longer suspension travel. It’s interesting that the CRF250L non-Rally model has 6/10 inch more ground clearance than the Rally model; maybe that difference is related to the skid plate. This extension was a good move by Honda because many trail riders are down sizing from the 450cc off-road bikes to the smaller displacement bikes that are more manageable on tight, technical trails. MSRP for the 2017 CRF250L is $5,149. MSRP for the Rally version is $5,899. ABS is available as an option on both motorcycles. Husqvarna – I have had a soft spot for Husqvarna motorcycles since I bought and raced a 2009 450 SMR (supermoto.) It is one of the bikes I wish I hadn’t sold. That model was built when BMW owned the company.

The 450 was wicked fast and fun on the track. KTM now owns the company and is building racewinning motorcycles under both flags. The Husqvarna generating the most interest among street riders this year is actually two models based on the same platform: the Vitpilen 401 and the Svartpilen 401. Both are positioned by Husqvarna as “Urban” motorcycles and are powered by single cylinder thumpers (4-stroke engines.) Both are styled as café racers but the Svartpilen has some scrambler-like components like street-legal knobbies, a tank rack, skid plate, and exhaust protection. The seating position is slightly more upright because of the off-road handlebar. Pricing was not available for either model at press time. Yamaha – There are several new or updated Yamahas in their line-up but the most interesting model is the FZ-09. This naked bike is stunning. It’s powered by an 847cc triple; one of my favorite engine configurations. The styling is angular with a shortened rear end, a small, sharp headlamp arrangement, and a low, shorty exhaust. There’s not much room for luggage other than a tank bag. It’s probably best used as a one-up hooligan bike. That’s not a bad thing. MSRP starts at $8,999. Zero – Electric motorcycles are becoming more feasible as the range of travel on a single charge grows. Zero Motorcycles seems to be the one manufacturer who is making the greatest progress

Off-Season Checklist for Midwest Motorcyclists by Jason Waechter, Esq. Even though February is the shortest month of the year, it seems like the longest for most of the motorcyclists I know here in the Midwest: It’s cold, it’s dark, and it seems like ages since we put our bikes away for winter. Here are a few things you can do now, in the off-season, to help pass the time until you can ride again. Check: Your motorcycle insurance policy. Are you carrying enough of the appropriate coverage? Are you certain any custom work is covered? What about accessories? I know it sounds boring, but I always recommend a thorough review of your insurance policy before the new riding season starts so you will be ready to go the first nice day that comes along. Check: That you didn’t cancel your insurance for winter. I have mentioned this in numerous articles in the past, but it is worth repeating: homeowner’s insurance almost never covers motorcycles that are being stored on your property, so it’s important to keep your motorcycle policy active year-round. Check: Facebook for photos, videos, and motorcycle awareness materials. There are a lot of resources available via Facebook; many motorcycle clubs have pages and plan events that way, and there are plenty of shareable posters, videos, photos, and more available for motorcyclists across all bike and riding styles. For motorcycle awareness tips and other information, follow us at Facebook.com/ TheMotorcycleLawyer. My team and I are always looking for great ideas and new ways to promote motorcycle awareness, and we encourage readers to participate by posting, sharing, and asking questions. Check: Youtube for tips, tricks, gear, and trips. Let’s be honest, a lot of riders love Youtube for the

motorcycle stunt videos, but you can also get great riding and safety tips, reviews on bikes and gear, how-to guides and DIY videos, and even see longer footage from road trips all around the world. For information on motorcycle laws and other relevant topics, visit my channel at Youtube.com/TheMotorcycleLawyer1. Check: Your motorcycle manual. Give your owner’s manual a quick readthrough this winter and familiarize yourself a little better with your bike. While it may seem like a no-brainer, a lot of people don’t look at their manuals often enough. Knowing your bike a little better could help you troubleshoot when things go wrong. Check: Your motorcycle. The off-season is a great time for repairs or upgrades, whether you like tinkering yourself, or you’ve got a guy to do it for you. You could also learn from an expert how to do basic repairs and maintenance on your bike. The more time you invest working on your motorcycle during the off-season, the more time you’ll have to ride it when the weather gets nice, and being familiar with basic repairs could be a lifesaver during the riding season. Check: Your skills. If you can find one, the offseason is a great time to take a certified rider training program. Obviously, outdoor skills classes are few and far between during the Midwest winter. That said, it’s worth looking around, or even just registering early for a class closer to the beginning of the riding season. You could also look for nonriding skills classes, like first aid and CPR courses for example. If there is one available, I would suggest taking the Bystander Assistance Course, or any of the excellent curriculum offered by Accident Scene Management, Inc. (ASM). The Bystander Assistance Course provides motorcyclists with skills and knowledge to help deal with the scene of a crash: basic First Aid, managing the crash site,

how to properly lift a motorcycle off an injured rider, and other skills. While myself and my firm are not formally affiliated with Accident Scene Management, Inc., I believe the classes they offer are so valuable that I am happy to spread the word for them when given the opportunity, to the point that I offer space for the Bystander Assistant Course for free at my office headquarters several times a year, and even helped my Marketing Specialist, Debbie Parinello, become a certified EMT so she can teach ASM’s courses. If you want more information, contact Debbie via our office at 1-877-Biker-Law. Check: Your level of participation. Is riding a motorcycle a hobby for you, or a lifestyle? If it’s the latter, it’s a great idea to get involved with the local biker community. The off-season leaves motorcyclists with plenty of time to do other things, like participate in local motorcycle club events, charities and fundraisers, or motorcycle awareness campaigns. There are many different levels of involvement, so if you’re more of a solorider, you can still be involved via Facebook and other social sites. If nothing else, getting involved with the biker community in your area is a great way to meet other people who are as passionate about riding as you are. No matter what you choose to do during the off-season, I hope it helps the time pass quickly and keeps your spirits lifted. That saying is undoubtedly true. When Tiffany Van Conant and Tina Van Conant organized at fundraiser for Morgan at Ray C’s on December 3, the flat-track community and their fans turned out in force. Past, present, and future champions like Scott Parker, Jay Springsteen, Henry Wiles, Jared Mees (2015 AMA Pro Flat Track Champion), Bryan Smith (2016 AMA Pro Flat Track Champion), and Jerry Kennedy were there. (Jerry Kennedy is the owner of Kennedy Racing. He flew in from California for both the Kainz/McGrane fundraiser and the Morgan Monroe fundraiser. He donated decorations for the Kainz/McGrane event and catering for the Monroe fundraiser.) Jeremiah Duffy, Amateur National #1 flat track racer, also attended and delivered donations from the Indiana flat-track community to the Monroe family.

Products donated to Morgan’s fundraiser included four motorcycles and three guns. Hewey Robinson donated a race-ready 2015 Kawasaki KX85 for which 52 playing cards were sold for $100 each. The card drawn determined the winner and $5,200

went to the Monroe family. The gun auction generated $1,600. Lots of other products were auctioned off to attract additional donations. One of Ray C’s customers who couldn’t attend and wanted to remain anonymous donated $1,000. Overall, more than $20,000 in donations was generated for the Monroe family. Add the optional Z-Force Power Tank and you can extend the range to 184 miles (city driving. The city driving disclaimer on the website is interesting when considering this is a dual-sport motorcycle and requires further explanation.) The DSR comes equipped with Pirelli dual-sport tires, Showa adjustable suspension (approximately 7” to travel front and rear),

Victory Motorcycles - In case you haven’t already heard, Polaris is shutting down Victory Motorcycles immediately to focus their resources on Indian Motorcycles and other parts of their powersports business. Sales of the Victory line apparently never met expectations. It’s unfortunate. The Victory motorcycles I rode were solid, well-built rides. The company will honor warranties and will make parts available for the next 10 years. These are just a few examples of the many interesting 2017 and 2018 motorcycles either already available or soon will be. Motorcycles coming into the market this year incorporate new technologies, innovative styling, and awe-inspiring performance.
