Here at cc media, we’re looking forward to 2016. We’re working on plans for a couple of contests (look for announcements in our February 2016 issue) as well as some new ideas for stories that we think you will enjoy and hopefully find useful. What are your motorcyclerelated plans for the New Year? New motorcycle? Big trips? New destinations? It’s not too early to start planning. Heck, by the time you’re reading this, we will have already passed the shortest day of the year and the number of daylight minutes will be growing each day. If you have ideas for article topics or things you think will make this a better, more informative magazine, feel free to send them to me at Publisher@MidwestMotorcyclist.com. We are always open to ideas that will help us serve you better. The Live It Right Dream Ride team of Emily Flinkstrom and Jay Wilgus has reached the end of their adventure ride from Ann Arbor, Michigan to Ushuaia / Tierra del Fuego at the southernmost tip of South America. They’ve sold their bikes and will be returning to the U.S. before Christmas. We will miss sharing stories of their trip with you. Each is a talented writer and photographer, not to mention nice, quality people overall. They’re not quite done yet, however. This month, Emily bids farewarell to the Suzuki DR650 she named Sue. It’s an appropriate end that those of us who rode and sold a bike we loved will

Random Ramblings of a Rare Bird
Touring Fairport Harbor on Ohio’s North Coast by Mike Mekinda
It’s amazing that, in the high-energy buzz of daily life, we become so oblivious to our surroundings. We have home and we have the destination we need to reach; and all we pass along the way becomes a blur of ordinary. We plan vacations nearly anywhere NOT passed by us on a daily basis, forgetting that all the places we pass and ignore are actually desired destinations for another’s vacation. As a writer/ photographer, I’m supposed to be more observant than most, yet I still

find myself surprised by things I miss in my own backyard. Lovely Wife underscored this on a recent night walk, as I was pointing out planets that happened to be particularly visible in the clear summer sky. She mentioned rarely noticing the night sky, unless we were on vacation or I had mentioned some phenomenon for her and the kids to view. Sad, strange, yet so true. The stars are always there, and we amble beneath them frequently. Yet, except for the slowed pace of

vacation, it often takes a specific reason to look up and be awed by it all. Think of just how much we miss. The same is true of the paths we travel every day, so here’s a challenge: instead of lamenting the lack of time or resources to take long trips on the bike, take short trips around the area you know. Take these short trips like a tourist, as you would if you had time to ride cross-country. Continued on page 10

finance their education. With this in mind, MMI has arranged their classes to be taken either in the morning, afternoon or evening, allowing the student to hold down a full time job while attending classes. As we walked around the buildings, I could not help but notice how all the students were dressed in the same MMI shirts and were all very presentable. I was told that there is a dress code at the school. Some students were in classrooms receiving lectures from the instructors while others were in labs doing hands-on work on the many bikes that were available. As we walked the halls, Michael would interact with the occasional student and I got the opinion that he truly cared about the student’s educational experience. The courses covered at MMI range from engine theory to electrical systems — the area that most entry-level technicians struggle with. I was told that if a student has trouble in a course, he can receive tutoring free of charge and can take one course over without extra charge. I also noticed that there were several female students attending class and was told that not only did they easily fit in but helped raise the class’s grades.

Record-breaking Toys for Tots Book Review Drive for BMW Motorcycles Steve McQueen, Full-Throttle Cool Written by Dwight Jon Zimmerman Art by Greg Scott of Southeast Michigan Plymouth, Michigan – BMW Motorcycles of Southeast Michigan (BMW SEM) wrapped up their 7th Annual Toys for Tots drive at their annual Christmas party on Saturday, December 12. More than 500 toys and $1,300 in cash – a 15% and 20% increase, respectively, over last year – were donated at the dealership. “People are generous,” said John Horner, owner of BMW SEM. “Especially motorcyclists. The image the public holds of motorcyclists is that of the dirty, criminal biker riding loud motorcycles. In reality, most motorcyclists are both honest and generous. The success of this year’s drive demonstrates just how generous they are.” More than 250 customers attended what is always a popular Christmas event at the dealership. There are lots of door prizes, refreshments and a catered lunch. The two Marines who were on site in support of the Toys for Tots drive drew names for the door prizes. The weather was so nice that several people took demo rides during the party. “The spirit of the holidays is alive,” said Mr. Horner. “With so much stress and anxiety in the world today, people are looking for places they can be comfortable and meet up with other like-minded souls. Motorcyclists are no different. This annual Christmas gathering is our way of creating that space and thanking our customers for their support at the same time.” For more information about BMW SEM or their Toys for Tots drive, visit the dealership at 14855 N. Sheldon Road in Plymouth, Michigan, call them at 734.453.0500, or visit their website at www.bmwmcsem.com.

Review by Ray Peabody
Despite the fair riding weather we’ve had into mid-December, I recently had the opportunity to catch up on some reading. Steve McQueen, Full-Throttle Cool, a graphic biography, was one of the books I selected. I know what you’re thinking. A graphic biography? Really? Isn’t that like a comic book for adults. My answer: Yes, it is. A graphic book, whether a novel or nonfiction, allows the writer to tell a story using a combination of words and drawings. In this case, the author and artist chronologically describe McQueen’s life without a lot of miscellany. My personal preference in biographies is more background, detail and nuance that allow me to get to know the subject beyond what one could find in the press. If you’re older than a millennial, you probably know something about Steve McQueen. For most of our readers, you know him as a motorcycle racer and one of the stars of the Academy Award-nominated motorcycle racing film, On Any Sunday. Others will know him as an auto racer who ran at Sebring and the 24 hours of LeMans, among many other races. Some might know him as a television and movie actor who starred in films such as Bullitt, The Great Escape, The Thomas Crown Affair, and The Sand Pebbles among many others. But he was much more. I enjoyed Full-Throttle Cool and learned a few things I hadn’t known. McQueen was a guy’s guy. He overcame a tough, abusive childhood to become a success as a U.S. Marine, motorcycle racer, car racer, and movie star. Along the way, he enjoyed a variety of vices not to mention a long line of beautiful women. McQueen clearly enjoyed his life. He was also
charitable in terms of both time and money. The use of graphic art in books helps tell the story but, with less text, this type of book is usually a rather quick read. I think I spent an hour to 1 ½ hours with this book. Considering the suggested $19.99 price tag, the entertainment value of such a short work is somewhat diminished. I’d rather read a real book, re-watch On Any Sunday, or check out the Wikipedia entry on McQueen. Graphic biographies or novels are not for me. If you’re interested in reading Steve McQueen, Full-Throttle Cool, it’s available at all of the usual booksellers.
Continued from previous page I will admit that I was a little surprised at how little machine shop training was given the students. I have found that most motorcycle shops no longer do their own machine work. As the end of the tour was approaching, we visited the Marine classrooms and labs that are housed in one of the buildings. The tour was much more than I had expected and I was impressed at how complete the training that each student receives at MMI. Upon graduation, most students find entrylevel jobs with a franchised shop with the help of the school’s job-placement program. The school also offers lifetime job placement assistance. After the tour ended, Michael and I were posing for a picture in front of one of the buildings when a student needed help with his own Harley that had a charging system failure. He made sure the student

had a way to get his motorcycle fixed and a ride home. Before heading over to the dealer show, my wife and I were sitting at a park bench next to the parking lot as the classes for the morning were letting out and the afternoon students were arriving. I could tell that the students were truly enjoying themselves and this said as much about the schooling at MMI as anything. I will say that the pizza truck in the parking lot had to be the highlight of my wife’s visit while I thought the sight of a whole room full of Harley Knuckleheads, Panheads, and Shovelhead motors was my highlight. More info can be seen at www.MMITech.edu. If you are considering a job in the motorcycle repair industry, going to MMI would be an excellent choice.

For those of us who grew up in this area, the two village names are pretty much interchangeable (much to the annoyance of the residents of each), as telling the folks we were “going to Fairport Harbor” basically meant somewhere along the beach, harbor or river, and might include sailing, canoeing or jet skis. Riding the vintage Harley sidecar rig through the area still left me uncertain of actual boundaries without looking at a map, but it took me back to

Once a bustling industrial port, with vast area covered by the Diamond Shamrock Corporation, the villages have settled into a much quieter existence with a couple of the most beautiful beaches on the Great Lakes. Lake freighters still travel a short way up the Grand River to unload materials in enormous piles on the banks for asphalt and concrete firms (still fascinating to watch!), or load materials from the Morton Salt facilities, but most of the heavy industry left the area years ago. The Live It Right Dream Ride
A Goodbye Letter to My Motorcycle Words by Emily Flinkstrom Dear Sue, We did it! We really did it! We rode all the way from Ann Arbor, Michigan to the southernmost tip of South America. Reflecting back on our 22,000 miles together, I am so grateful you were by my side. I know it hasn’t been all sunshine and rainbows, especially since our relationship got off to such a rocky start. Our first time together, as we rode out of the dealership parking lot, you didn’t want to leave. You continuously stalled your engine as the staff watched, patiently waving
Photos by Jay Wilgus goodbye for an awkward ten minutes. That same week, you tipped over in the middle of a busy intersection in Ann Arbor, throwing me into the street. Once I got you back upright with the help of a concerned witness, you refused to start. You really embarrased me, Sue, but I knew you were just testing my level of dedication. Once we became comfortable with each other, we had some pretty amazing experiences, didn’t we? You carried me to unimaginable places inaccessible by other four-wheeled travel partners. I’ll never forget the remote and uniquely beautiful Continued on page 15

Motorcycling & Law
Discrimination Against Motorcyclists by Dondi Vesprini As part of my practice of law, I take many calls from motorcyclists across our State who advise me about situations where they have been discriminated against simply because of the fact that they ride a motorcycle or wear a patch on their back. Some of the more common stories I hear include a motorcyclist who is told by his apartment complex that he can’t keep his motorcycle at the complex, yet it is perfectly ok to keep a motor vehicle at the complex; a motorcyclist who is told by his potential employer that he is being passed over for employment because he belongs to a motorcycle organization; or the motorcyclists who are asked to leave a bar or restaurant because they have a patch on their back. Unfortunately, in Michigan, it is perfectly legal to fire, refuse to hire, refuse to promote someone, and refuse to serve someone in stores, restaurants, and other public accommodations, solely on the basis that the person is a motorcyclist. In other words, in Michigan, it is legal to discriminate against a motorcyclist. In such circumstances, the motorcyclist is left with virtually no legal remedy. Michigan does have an anti-discrimination law, the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act. This Act prohibits discrimination in employment, housing, public accommodations, public service and educational facilities based on religion, race, color, national origin, age, sex, height, weight, familial status and marital status. It does not forbid such discrimination based on the fact that a person is a motorcyclist, belongs to a motorcycle organization or wears a patch on his back. Minnesota was the first and only state in the country to enact a biker antidiscrimination law; Minnesota Statute Section 604.12, enacted in 1998 states in part: “A place of public accommodation may not restrict access, admission, or usage to a person solely because the person operates a motorcycle or is wearing clothing that displays the name of an organization or association. Minnesota’s law does allow a place
of public accommodation to restrict access, admission or usage to a motorcyclist if the motorcyclist’s conduct poses a risk to the health or safety of another or to the property of another; or the clothing worn by the person is obscene or includes the name or symbol of a criminal gang. If a place of public accommodation violates the law, the motorcyclist may bring a civil lawsuit against the violator in an amount not to exceed $500 and may additionally ask for injunctive relief (a Court order forbidding the violator from discriminating against the motorcyclist) and reasonable attorney fees not to exceed $500. The Minnesota statute serves as an example that if enough voices of the motorcyclist community are heard and stories of discrimination are shared, it is possible to effect change through the legislature to combat discriminatory practices. As always, if anyone has any questions or if I can be of legal assistance to you or anyone you know who has been injured in a motorcycle accident, please don’t hesitate to contact me as I deal with these types of claims on a daily basis on behalf of injured motorcyclists statewide. Further, for those readers who are members of any motorcycle organizations, clubs or groups, if you would like to have me come out to your group to speak or give a presentation on the legal rights of an injured motorcyclist or on any specific topic that your group may be curious about, please don’t hesitate to give me a call at (248-569-4646) or shoot me an email at Dondi@buckfirelaw.com. I give presentations state-wide and there is never a charge associated with having me out. I enjoy having the opportunity to come out and meet motorcycle enthusiasts from all parts of our State!

Continued from page 12 - Live It Right Dream Ride deserts of Baja, and the tranquil beaches of Central America. And the Andes...wow, the Andes. Together, you and I got to know them more intimately than I could have ever dreamed. From Colombia to Chile, sea level to 16,000 feet, our shared love for South America grew with each passing mile. You were the perfect balance to my more introverted and shy personality, igniting conversations with fellow travelers and locals alike. So many of the friendships I have developed along the way can be traced back to a question or compliment about you. Yet you also didn’t mind retreating into the background as these interactions evolved into deeper and lasting relationships. You have been a reliable and steadfast travel partner, with only one exception. And who can blame you for allowing one flat tire through all the sharp, rocky terrain? Even then, you forged
ahead to the next town as I breathed life into you every 10 miles. You didn’t so much as skip a beat through all the nasty elements thrown at us, which is more than I can say for myself. You infused much needed confidence in me as we ventured into terrain outside my comfort zone, quietly assuring me that as strong, determined females, we could get through anything. And every day, without judgment, you welcomed me onto your back, even in my most stinky and unattractive moments. Now that’s true friendship! Yes, we had some amazing times. But before we part ways, I feel I need to clear my conscience and offer a few sincere apologies. You should know that all those times I cursed at you under my breath, or often screaming out loud, weren’t personal. Those childish outbursts were most often triggered by fear or intense discomfort, with you on the unfortunate receiving end of my tantrum. Also, I apologize for those days where I was distant, desiring to be anywhere other than with you. I hope you realize that time apart is crucial in any healthy relationship, and I really do believe that with us, distance made the heart grow fonder. Sorry as well about the horrible, disgusting gas I fed you in Bolivia. 78 octane was the only choice. If it’s any consolation, I paid $5 per gallon for it, so - technically - it hurt me, too. And finally, sorry about those few times I peed on your wheel. The thing is, trying to pop a squat in the Patagonian wind is no easy feat. So, my good friend, I guess this is
goodbye. I will always hold a special place for you in my heart, as together, we have achieved something of which I am extremely proud. While I don’t know where my diverging path will take me, I trust that yours will continue to carry you and your new companion on grand adventures. And don’t worry, you don’t have to say it, I know I will always be your favorite. Love, Emily

Renting a Motorcycle on Vacation? Here are some Dos and Don’ts by Jason Waechter, Esq. Happy New Year! These are some of the hardest months for motorcyclists in the Midwest, as we sit and wait for the cold weather to pass. Many of us will try to sneak away on vacation somewhere warm this winter, and what I’ve noticed during my last few visits to the south is there’s no shortage of motorcycle, moped, and scooter rentals available. I thought I’d share a few Dos and Don’ts for renting a bike while on vacation this year, to help get you started. DO research your rental company thoroughly. Whether you’re looking to rent and ride, or go on a more comprehensive tour, there are a lot of companies out there looking to cash in on tourist dollars. Be smart about it: ask your fellow riders or club members, read reviews, and contact the company with any questions before going ahead with your reservation. DON’T try to “wing it” once you get there. There are a lot of things to consider when planning a motorcycle vacation: how to pack, where to go, what type of riding you want to do, and the laws in the state you’re visiting. Renting for an afternoon or even a couple days is no big deal, but, if you’re planning on making a motorcycle a big part of your holiday, go in with a plan. DO keep in mind the costs: daily rental rates are one thing, but you’ll probably have to put down a deposit, as well as pay for insurance, gas, mileage overages, equipment rental, tolls, and other costs. Many companies offer an “all inclusive”
rate; make sure that rate includes all the incidentals before you make a commitment. DON’T forget about insurance. I can’t say it enough: talk to the rental company about what they offer, what’s covered, and what your deductible would be. Then talk to your own insurance agent to make sure you’re fully covered. Your agent may recommend extra medical coverage (which you might need anyway if you plan to ride without a helmet). I get calls every year from people injured while on vacation; trust me, the little extra you pay for coverage can make a world of difference if something bad happens. DO brush up on the laws in the state you are visiting. Do you have to have a special license or endorsement? Are motorcyclists allowed to ride without a helmet (and are there restrictions)? Can bikers lane-split? Are you allowed to ride side by side in the lane? Most rental companies will have this information on their websites or go over it with you when you call, but do a bit of research on your own to make sure you’re covering the bases. DON’T forget your rain gear! I know we all want to believe our vacations will be sunny and warm the whole time, but you can’t change the weather, so you need to prepare for it. Most rain gear takes up very little space, so it’s not worth leaving it at home. Speaking of gear, packing is important. If you’re planning on riding a lot, you may not have space for much. Ask the rental company if they offer luggage storage, or consider shipping your luggage to the hotel in advance of your arrival; I’ve heard some bikers swear by this. Finally, if you plan on wearing a helmet, think about whether you want to bring your helmet or rent one: a lot of rental companies have them available, which could be a good option if you want to save precious suitcase real estate. DO talk to others about places to go and things to see. There are some hidden gems all over this country, and many of

them are best seen from a bike. If you’re going with a group, choose your destination and then follow the same group-riding principles I have discussed previously: Plan stops to allow slower riders to catch up, carry basic repair equipment, go over hand signals before you start, and so on. For more group-riding tips, visit my website at www.TheMotorcycleLawyer.com. DON’T forget: if you’re in a tourist-y place, you’re going to encounter a lot of tourists, many of whom will be behind the wheel of a motor vehicle. Many will be in rental vehicles they may not know very well, distracted by maps or GPS directions, unfamiliar with roads and traffic patterns, making sudden stops or turns, and generally not looking out for motorcycles. Don’t get me wrong: motor vehicle drivers are always responsible for watching out for motorcyclists. But if you’re riding on vacation, be extra careful, particularly at intersections, and don’t put too much trust that drivers are watching for you. It’s not a bad idea to research problem areas or “most dangerous intersections” in the city you are visiting; I have some of these listed on my website. Finally, DO grab a printed map or write down your directions before you hit the road. Yes, you’ll probably have your phone with you at all times, but if you hit an area with no service, or your battery dies, it’s always good to have a Plan B. If you’re lucky enough to get to ride this winter, tell us about it! Share your story and pictures at Facebook.com/TheMotorcycleLawyer, or email it to writer@lawyerforlife.com. We are always looking for tips and recommendations from fellow bikers, so if you have a great experience (or a bad one), please let us know. Attorney Jason A. by Franz Hoffer This may come as a shock to some of you, but I actually read as well as write. As a matter of fact, I just finished The Ride of Lifetime by Paul Teutul Sr. of Orange County Chopper fame and the TLC hit show, American Chopper. I actually had the pleasure of meeting Pauli (the son) in Sturgis in 2003, the first year I went to the rally. My friends and I were sitting in Minerva’s, the bar inside the Ramkota Hotel. As I walked to the rest room to return some of what I had been imbibing, there was Pauli playing a onearmed bandit in the small auxiliary bar. I stopped to talk with him and invited him to the bar to drink with us. He declined saying that he and their staff were staying at the Ramkota and he was waiting for the rest of them to have a team dinner together. American Chopper had just debuted the previous year and was gaining popularity. We shook hands and I returned to my friends. Throughout the week, I saw him and Paul Sr. at various times but did not talk to them. Later that week, I ran into Mikey (Paul Sr.’s youngest son) in somewhat of a disguise at the Jessie James display in downtown Sturgis. I asked him whether he was Mikie. He put his finger on his lips and said, “Shhhhh, I’m working undercover and if my Dad knows I’m here, he’ll kick my ass.” I’ve kept his secret till just now. Ride of a Lifetime, like the image Paul portrays on American Chopper, offers tough, in-your-face advice on what it takes to run a successful business. Paul is a no-nonsense type of guy who can easily intimidate both in person and in print. He has a muscular physique but is surprisingly short in stature. His mustache is more impressive in real life than it is on the TV, and, even though he frequently seems to have a bad-ass TM
Midwest Motorcyclist
attitude on the show, he seems kind of quiet in person. As you read the book, which I highly recommend, you can’t help but remember that millions of people followed his family business on the show. He truly is a self-made man. Paul Sr. comes across rough but, if you read between the lines, you see a man who is not only a nice guy, but also a sharp businessman who has useful advice on entrepreneurship, running a business, and managing people; not like the way he does it on the show by throwing chairs or kicking/ punching holes in walls, or screaming at people, including his sons. Motorcycles have always been Paul’s passion, but not his first business. He founded Orange County Choppers in upstate New York in 1999, growing out of a successful metal shop/ foundry business, aptly named Orange County Ironworks. It is still an operating business. He actually got his start welding and installing railings for patios and porches. Teutul has grown his motorcycle business from a hobby into a multi-million dollar operation that produces and sells 150 to 200 custom bikes a year at retail prices starting at $30,000 and increasing to more than six figures. From his headquarters in upstate New York, he and his team have built a dealership network in the US and abroad. His advice can work for businesses of all sizes and can be applied to any industry. In this book, readers will learn firsthand how Teutul built a uniquely successful business by working hard, having high standards, and demanding the same from others. On the show, it seems that Paul Jr. is the creative force behind Orange County Choppers but you quickly learn that is not the case. Paul Sr. makes the rules, gives direction, and has final approval over all designs and builds. The 67-year-old founder of Orange County Choppers was born in Yonkers, New

Continued from previous page York in 1948 and was a Merchant Marine during the Vietnam War. During most of his young life, he had issues with alcohol. He admits he was an absentee father to his three sons (one runs the iron foundry) and that his addiction led to a divorce from his first wife. He has been sober for more than 32 years, finally kicking the habit when his “drinking got so bad that he was coughing up blood.” Paul was on another TV show some years ago when “The Celebrity Apprentice” was still in its infancy. He demonstrated his talent when he raised almost $500,000 (more than anyone else on the show) for the Make-A-Wish Foundation before being fired by The Donald in the 10th episode of that season. I’m a little surprised Donald didn’t take one on the chin for that firing. I recommend this book to anyone interested in business and motorcycles. It can and will give you some solid advice on starting and running successful business. To be honest, even if you are not interested in the business aspect, it’s a good read. It’s available in both hard cover and paperback and the price varies. I saw it on the internet for as much as $35 for the hardcover and in paperback for around $12.
