The Honda XR 400 is back in the garage. When I last wrote about this lightweight adventure bike project, it was running lean and produced a sound out of the right side of the engine similar to what you might hear if someone was shaking a coffee can filled with pebbles. “Cam chain” was the first thing that came to mind. I struggled to resolve the lean-running condition for at least a month. I cleaned and rebuilt the aftermarket Mikuni pumper carburetor hoping that would resolve the problem. It didn’t. Adjusting the clip down on the needle valve caused it to run overly rich. There was no middle slot for the clip where the lean problem was eliminated and also wasn’t overly rich. I was confounded. The solution turned out to be as embarrassing as it was simple. I’ll get to that shortly. I did everything I could to fix the cam chain noise except replacing it. While quite capable to handle service and most repairs on my motorcycles and truck, the one challenge I haven’t yet accepted is to open up an engine (aside from valve covers). I’m not confident enough in my mechanical skills to tear an engine down and rebuild it knowing that it would restart. Visions of potential rebuild failure after rebuild failure had me cowed. Instead, hoping for a miracle fix, I adjusted the valves (slightly loose but not enough to cause the noise) and tested the automatic cam chain tensioner (seemed to be working as intended). Finally, unable to find any solution other than the replacement of cam chain, I accepted reality. Yes, I tried to persuade myself that I could do the job. Other people can do it so there’s no reason I couldn’t, right? My confidence waned and I opted to take the XR to my friend, Dave Bowman, owner of Tech-Care Suspension, for the repair. He and his tech, Jason, confirmed my cam chain diagnosis and set to repairing the XR. While Jason was working on the bike, Dave questioned me about the carburetor issues. Like me, he and
Jason were having difficulty starting the XR. He couldn’t understand why, with my multiple adjustments, I hadn’t been able to get the carburetor set up correctly. He was searching for an alternative problem since the carburetor is not that complicated. One of the questions he asked – the octane of the gas I was using – opened a window to the actual problem. Sometime before the lean-running condition started, I remembered that the XR’s tank was nearly empty just as I prepared to go for a ride. Rather than drive a quarter-mile down to the local gas station, I foolishly filled the tank from a can in the garage without thinking (obviously). The can held the 87 octane gas I use for the lawnmower. The XR requires premium 92 octane fuel. Once Jason completed the cam chain replacement, Dave emptied the tank and refilled it with the 92 octane nonethanol fuel he bought locally. The bike started up within a couple kicks and is now, apparently, running perfectly. The moral of this story for me: Think before you do. I kept adjusting the carburetor without fixing the problem. Instead, it would have been more useful to step back and review all of the issues that might have created the lean-running problem. The low-octane fuel problem might have been more apparent. The cam chain? Well, it needed to be replaced and it was. Some problems are better solved by professionals. We have a solid issue for you this month. Metro Triumph Riders Celebrate 35 Years of the Battle of the Brits by Ray Peabody The Metro Triumph Riders (MTR) held their 35th Annual Battle of the Brits Motorcycle Show at Camp Dearborn in Milford, Michigan on Sunday, September 10. While vintage British motorcycles are the focus of this show, motorcycles of every brand are included in the competition.
Patrick Knight’s 1979 Triumph Board Tracker Custom While the show gets more attention than the club, the club members are uniquely qualified to organize such a show. These guys (and they are mostly, if not all, guys) are experts on Triumph motorcycles specifically and British motorcycles in general. They know the exact features of vintage Triumph motorcycles and can easily identify non-stock parts. They regularly wrench on these old bikes and know how to address the well-known quirks. ASV C6 Levers by Gene Southard
When making your motorcycle more comfortable to ride, changing the levers isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. But operating the front brake and clutch lever takes a large amount of energy. Anyone who has ridden a bike with a hard-to-pull clutch lever will tell you they are tired at the end of a long ride. So when ASV offered a pair of their C6 levers to try on my WR Yamaha, I was interested in how they compared to the stock levers. I have always had issues with keeping my energy up at the end of a four- or five-hour ride, and wondered whether the levers would make a difference. ASV offers two levers: their F6 is a narrow forged lever with a threeyear warranty and their new C6 machined billet lever has a six-year warranty. Their C6 levers are made from 6061 shot-peened aluminum and come in black, blue and red matt finish. You can purchase them in standard length and a shorty version. The standard length levers fit behind my Cycra bark busters although the shorties may be needed when using other brands of bark busters. The main features of the C6 levers are the break away design and an adjustment for reach. The break away design will save your levers if you are prone to crashing and do not use bark busters. The reach adjustment is made with an easy turn knob—helpful for someone like me with small hands. Other features include a sealed steel pivot bearing that is rebuildable and their lazer logo.
I found the two features I liked the best were the wide rounded blade that fit my fingers comfortably and the firm grip matt finish. The pull was light and made it easy to modulate the clutch and brake with only two fingers. The C6 levers were easy to use and decreased the amount of hand fatigue at the end of a long ride. So when you are looking at changing your handlebars, grips or foot pegs for a more comfortable ride also consider a new pair of levers. MSRP as tested: $100

Changes Make for an Awesome 2017 Ton-Up by Ray Peabody
Depot Town, Ypsilanti, Michigan – Organizers for the Ton-Up Motorcycle and Music Festival made asignificant change that made the 2017 event one of the best. However, the most significant change was the one they would have liked to make the last couple years but couldn’t: the weather. Cool, sometimes wet weather for the last few years dampened (pun intended) attendance. Successful motorcycle events depend on warm, generally sunny, and mostly dry weather to attract riders. For 2017, the weather matched that description. And the riders came. The significant change was the venue. For past few years, the Ton-Up was held on Cross Street, the main street running through downtown Depot Town, a short distance northeast of downtown
Ypsilanti. For 2017, the Ton-Up moved to the Arbor Brewing Company (formerly The Corner Brewery) located at 720 Norris Street. What makes this location nearly perfect is that it is located in an industrial area on the edge of a residential neighborhood. Street parking is available all around the Brewery in addition to its two parking lots. The north lot served as the setting for the Ton-Up bike show and band performances; the two aspects of the event that have been consistent from the beginning. The bike show has 10 classes: Best Brit, Best Japanese, Best American, Best European, Best Café Racer, Best Small Café Racer, Best 2-Stroke, Best Original / Non-Restored, Best Altered, and Best

Touring the Hennepin Canal by Gene Southard
Come ride with me as we tour the historical Hennepin Canal in northern Illinois. Construction of this waterway was started in 1890 and completed in 1907 with its main goal to provide a way to move cargo from the northern section of the Illinois River to the Mississippi River, bypassing the southern part of the Illinois River that was not navigable because of rapids and lowwater levels. The 155-mile long canal was an illplanned venture from the start. The amount of traffic that was expected to use the canal never materialized due to the closing of the central Illinois coal fields, the decrease in shipments of salt from the Morton Salt Company in Chicago, and the growth of the railroads. But the building of this canal brought new constuction techniques including one of the first uses of poured concrete. The Hennepin Canal had 33 locks, 9 aqueducts and 67 bridges. The canal was closed to traffic in 1951 but after transfer of ownership to the State of Illinois, the canal was turned into a state park. The Hennepin Canal Parkway now has over 100 miles of hiking, biking, and equestrian trails that use the path once used by mules to pull the cargo laden barges along the canal. Five of the locks are restored and many of the iron bridges are open to foot traffic. The gear driven lift bridge at Lock 21 is still open for vehicle traffic. Steve and I saddled up our two-wheeled steeds and started our tour in Bureau Junction just north of Hennepin on the Illinois River. The first section of our tour followed the Bureau Creek Valley into the small town of Tiskilwa. Tiskilwa is an old indian town the name of which means “Gem
of the Valley”. But the section of the canal between Tiskilwa and Wyanet proved to be the most interesting. Four of the five restored locks are in this area. They are accessed by way of the rural county roads zigzaging along the Parkway. Few of the locks are signposted from the road so finding them is often akin to being on a scavenger hunt. A map provided by Dianna at the Visitors Center in Sheffield helped in locating them. At the Visitors Center, you can learn not only about the constuction of the canal but also about the varied wildlife that can be found in the parkway. Some of the locks have a small pull-off area on the road with a foot path to the lock. There is very little traffic in this agricultural area so finding a place to eat and sleep can be a challenge. There are several franchised motels in Princeton as well as B&Bs just outside Princeton and Sheffield; all only a short distance from the canal. We enjoyed some of our best dining at Red’s Bar and Grill in Sheffield (try their chicken chili) and Kelly’s Place in Tiskilwa. You can marvel at the many basketball championship trophys on display at Kelly’s Place. It was apropro that our ride to the canal followed the Galena Trail and Coach Road. This 1825 road was the major route between Peoria and historical Galena, Illinois. In the 1800s, travelers on this route risked being robbed. Now the only risk is hitting an Illinois pothole or the occasional deer. Just north of Chillicothe,
we did see two young fawns playfully chasing each other in a corn field. This historical route has some interesting sweeping corners which are rare in this prairie state where it is said that “A curve in Illinois is the corner of a corn field”. A storm front started rolling in from the west as we turned towards home but, fortunately, we encountered only a few sprinkles. If you are looking for a laid back ride in the Illinois countyside including a look at transportation from the late 19th and early 20th century, consider a ride along the Hennipen Canal Parkway.

more mature riders communed with younger tattooed, t-shirt wearing greasers in rolled up jeans and combat boots straight out of the 50s and women dressed as pin-ups from that same era. Lots of people from different backgrounds coming together with a common interest in motorcycles and music. The whole event was a hoot!

The music was fast and furious with DJ Del Villarreal filling in the gaps between bands. Dave Reynolds, owner of Life Cycle in Kalamazoo, brought over four of his Zero electric motorcycles for demo rides. It’s hard to tell if he sold any bikes as a result but people seemed genuinely interested in the electrics. Demo rides continued one

This 2017 Ton-Up seemed like something of a rebirth for an event that had been plagued with less than ideal weather the last few years. It’s a fun event that seems perfect at the new venue. Hopefully, future TonUps will enjoy similar weather and attendance. Kudos to the organizers for a successful Festival.

What to Do If You’re in a Collision with a Ride Sharing Driver by Jason Waechter, Esq. Uber and Lyft are some of the most popular ridesharing companies around, and for good reason. The convenience of ridesharing means that people can now arrange a ride with their smartphones instead of standing on the street corner in the rain trying to flag down passing taxis. However, there are some problems with ridesharing companies, especially when it comes to technicalities like insurance for passengers and other drivers in the event of a collision. No one likes to think about it, but it’s possible that the Uber car you’re riding in could get into a collision. And where does that leave you? That really depends on which state you’re in. Because ridesharing companies took off so quickly and spread around the country in an almost unprecedented manner, states have scrambled to keep up with regulatory laws for them. The good news is that most states have since passed laws requiring Uber to have a certain level of insurance coverage for their drivers and their passengers. However, the levels of insurance coverage may vary from state to state. In Michigan, for example, Uber drivers are required to have one million dollars in liability coverage in case they
have a collision while transporting passengers. If they’re not transporting passengers but are still on the clock, they’re required to have $50,000 in liability coverage. In Indiana, Uber drivers face a similar requirement while transporting passengers. The bare minimum for insurance coverage is one million dollars when carrying passengers. If you happen to be involved in a collision with a ridesharing driver, here are some steps to follow to ensure that you get all the information you need and have a compelling case when it comes to insurance coverage. Check for an Uber or Lyft sign in the windshield. After you’ve done that, look for passengers. If the Uber car is involved in a collision and there are passengers present, insurance coverage usually jumps to one million dollars or more. If you do see passengers, take their photos and get their information. You want to make sure that they talk to the police as well. Once they’ve talked to the police, have the police verify that there were passengers in the vehicle at the time of the accident. Following these steps in the wake of a collision with an Uber driver can help secure your case and entitle you to better insurance coverage. If you happen to be a passenger in an Uber vehicle at the time of a collision, document everything. Take screenshots of your payment confirmation, your ridesharing screen, anything you can use to prove that you were in the vehicle at the time of the
accident. You also need to talk to the police and let them know if you’re sore or in pain after the wreck. This is not the time to be stoic and try to walk off any pain. You’re putting your health and safety at risk. Finally, you should insist that a police report is filed and that you’re listed as a passenger during the collision. Don’t brush off the collision. It’s important to take steps to protect yourself in the wake of an accident, regardless of whether you’re a motorcyclist or a passenger. Attorney Jason A. Each year, attendees can find beautiful motorcycles in the show to ogle. This year, two bikes captured my attention. The first was a custom board tracker built out of a 1979 Triumph by Patrick Knight. (See picture) It’s a detail-rich beauty from it’s spring saddle and front fork to long, brushed-aluminum gas tank to its brasscolored head and tail-light housings to its floor boards.
The second was the 1928 Douglas DT5 / SW5 owned by Mike Sincoe. This Douglas is a museum-quality example. I don’t know whether it was all original but it was beautiful, regardless. Of course, the reality is that there are many such motorcycles on display at this event. Beautiful examples of Nortons, BSAs, BMWs, Ducatis, Moto Guzzis, Indians, Harleys, Vincents, Matchless, AJS,
and even the occasional Dnepr sidecar rig (similar to a Ural), BSA M-20 Military motorcycle, and Corbi scooter. The Battle of the Brits is one of the “Do Not Miss” shows for vintage motorcycle enthusiasts held each year. If you haven’t attended, next years show will be held on Sunday, September 9, 2018. HB 5013 - No Fault Reform Bill by Dondi Vesprini Claims Association fund (the fund that is paid into by insureds on all auto insurance policies to provide a reimbursement fund for insurers that pay out over $555,000.00 in medical expenses on any given claim), they refuse to provide the answer. If there is as much unused money in the fund as some have speculated, the claim that insurers are going broke is disingenuous. Next, the alleged reduction as proposed does not appear to be a reduction against the total premium you pay on your policy. Instead, the reduction is only as to the portion of the premium charged for your personal injury protection coverage, which is only a fraction of the coverages usually found and charged for on an insurance policy. Further, what isn’t given much attention in the media is that under this plan, it gives auto insurance companies the right to ask the Insurance Commission to invalidate the very rate reductions they are promising. Also, the plan does nothing to explain how it will be possible to lower the premiums without shifting the burden of medical care costs to the taxpayers of our state. Despite this, if you are one who feels that an alleged 20 percent reduction on only a portion of your insurance premium sounds like a good deal, you should be aware of what you are giving up in exchange. Below is a sampling of some of the most salient and damaging portions of the bill. 1. Whereas current Michigan No-Fault law provides for unlimited attendant care benefits, the plan would limit attendant care payments to no more than 56 hours per week for care provided in the home if provided by a relative of the injured person, someone living in the home or a person the injured person had a business or social relationship with before the injury. 56 hours a week translates to 8 hours a day which is insufficient for many people who suffer significant bodily injury or a significant brain injury which may require 24-hour care. It also restricts the ability of an injured person to receive the care from their family members who love and best know the needs of their loved one and will leave the injured person no choice but to resort to agency-provided care by strangers. 2. This month I wanted to write about the most recent incarnation of the no-fault reform legislation that has reared its ugly head yet again in Lansing. This most recent attempt to cut benefits that injured persons are entitled to when involved in an accident with a motor vehicle comes by way of House Bill 5013 which was announced by Detroit Mayor Michael Duggan, House Speaker Tom Leonard and introduced by Insurance Committee Chair Lana Theis on September 26, 2017. For those unfamiliar with Michigan’s No-Fault system, in a nutshell, a person injured in an accident that involves a motor vehicle is entitled to payment of no-fault benefits which includes medical expenses, wage loss, medical mileage, payment for assistance rendered to the injured person for personal care (attendant care) and payment for assistance with tending to the person’s household chores while injured. In the case of a motorcyclist, he/she is entitled to these benefits if injured in an accident that involved a motor vehicle (i.e., car, truck, bus). Medical expenses and attendant care benefits are a lifetime benefit with no cap on dollar amount and wage loss and household chores are payable for up to three years after the accident. Also, these benefits are payable to the injured person even if the injured person was at fault for causing the accident (hence the term “No fault” benefits). House Bill 5013 is suggested as a “fix” to the no-fault system as the insurance industry claims the system is “broken” and insurance companies are paying out too much money on No-Fault claims resulting in higher insurance premiums to their insureds. Thus, advocates of the plan point to a reduction in auto insurance premiums as the biggest selling point to get people to support the plan. In fact, creators of the plan allege that it would lead to a 20 percent reduction on auto insurance premiums for the average driver. Who doesn’t want lower insurance premiums right? Well, first off, the insurance industry has never been able to offer up any proof that they are going broke by paying no fault claims. In fact, when asked to answer the magic question regarding how much money is in the Michigan Catastrophic

his/her no-fault unlimited medical expense payments from the insurer of the involved motor vehicle. Under the plan, the motorcyclist medical expense payments will be bound by the medical expense limit that the insured elected for himself/ herself on their auto policy. For example, if the operator of the auto chose the $250,000.00 cap on medical expenses for himself/herself on their auto policy, that same cap will apply to the motorcyclist who is injured by that insured in an accident. Here’s a scarier example, if an operator of a motor vehicle is 62 or over and did not elect to carry any medical coverage on his/her auto policy, then the motorcyclist who is injured by that person will not be entitled to any medical expense coverage! 3. An insurance producer or agency and their employees and insurance agents are given complete immunity from any claims against them by an insured for their conduct related to obtaining or providing information or the choice of benefits by an insured. Thus, if your insurance agent provided mistaken information or misguided you in choosing the benefit cap that were most suitable to you, you cannot make a claim against them for their conduct. 4. Doctors or hospitals rendering care for emergency medical conditions or emergency care are not entitled to payment of their bills by the insurance company in an amount more than 125% of the rate that Medicare pays for such services. How many doctors do you know of who don’t accept Medicare patients? This is because Medicare only pays a fraction of what the doctor charges. 125% of that rate is still below what the doctor charges. The ramification of this is that is that if a doctor/hospital knows he/it is not going to be paid the full amount of the bill or close to it, the doctor/ hospital is going to be less inclined to treat persons injured in motor vehicle accidents leaving the injured with less choice of doctors to treat with after an accident. So, I ask you, with all that you are giving up under the bill, does a non-guaranteed promise to reduce a small portion of your insurance premium by 20% sound like a good deal to you? I should think not. One last item to consider. In looking at the bill, the Nonpartisan House Fiscal Agency, which is a nonpartisan agency that impartially evaluates the fiscal impact of any given bill, has estimated that if the bill passes it would create increased costs for Medicaid by an estimated $150 Million dollars per year after 10 years. Be ready to pony up taxpayers! by Franz “The Preacher” Hoffer Throughout the year, we authors and contributors that write for Midwest Motorcyclist / Michigan Motorcyclist seek out and report on interesting, wonderful trips, new and unusual innovations, maintenance tips, and unique people. I was recently cleaning out my bookshelf and came across some old and some recent motorcycle manuals, printouts, statistics, history books and other paraphernalia and I decided to write this article based on what I found in those books. It was actually a lot of fun and I was surprised at how much information I had accumulated, maybe used for a previous article and then forgotten. I call this article: “Did you know?” Let me know what you think about it. Did you know that motorcycles were developed from bikes called “Safety Bicycles”? The front and rear wheels of the Safety Bicycles were the same size but they had the traditional bicycle pedals, chainoperated rear wheel drive, but no brakes; the bottom of your shoe was the brake. Did you know that in the 1860’s a Frenchman named Pierre Michaux, a blacksmith, built the first vehicle to resemble a motorcycle? It was a steam-powered three wheeler called “Velocipede”. Pierre Lallement, one of Michaux’s employees who eventually made his way to the United States, copied and refined the design and applied for a patent in 1866, the first such patent registered in our country. His colleague, Sylvester Roper, was killed demonstrating the machine. Did you know that in 1881, Lucius Copeland of Phoenix, Arizona designed a small steam boiler which could be mounted on the front fork to drive the large front wheel of an American Star high-wheeler bicycle (you know, the one with the big front wheel and small rear wheel) at 12 mph? In 1887, Copeland formed the Northrop Manufacturing Co. to produce the first successful ‘Moto-Cycle’ (actually a three-wheeler). Did you know that the first recognizable vehicle you could truly call a motorcycle was designed, built and debuted in Germany (where else) in 1885 by Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach? It was a gas-fueled TM

motorcycle called the Petroleum Reitwagenn (Carwagon). It was actually designed as a test vehicle for their new internal combustion engine, rather than a true commercial vehicle for sale to the general public. Did you know that, with all the rural roads and most of the country being involved in agriculture, motorcycles were originally in competition with early automobiles for the heart of the new motoring public? That changed with the introduction of Model T and motorcycles were relegated to recreational, racing, and special purpose vehicles. Did you know that there were over 600,000 motorcycles sold in 2015 (last year with accurate numbers)? 29.3% were Harley-Davidson followed by Honda at 14%; Yamaha 13%; Polaris (Victory and Indian) 8.3% (but Indian is growing); Kawasaki, KTM, Suzuki, and BMW and some off brands dividing up the remaining 40%. Did you know that more people in the United States own a HarleyDavidson motorcycle than any other brand? Many Harley riders own more than one. Did you know that there are 893 Harley-Davidson dealers in the United States and over 1,550 worldwide? Did you know the oldest continuously operating HarleyDavidson dealer in the world is AD Farrow in Columbus, Ohio? Alford D. Farrow purchased his first HarleyDavidson motorcycles in 1912 and the dealership has been in business ever since. Did you know that California has the most registered motorcycles with 799,900? They’re followed by Florida with 545,452; Texas 443,856, Ohio 402,264; Pennsylvania 400,908; Illinois 352,318; New York 345,118; Wisconsin 323,378; Michigan 267,292 and rounding out the top 10 is Minnesota at 237,259. Did you know that, according to the Department of Transportation, there are 9,122,453 motorcycles registered in the United States by private citizens, police departments, and other commercial organizations and that historically 22% of motorcycle sales are to 1st time buyers? Did you know that women represent 16% of the riding public? Or that the average age of a motorcycle

Continued from previous page owner (male and female) in the United States is 47? In 1992, the average age was 32 and, in 2009, it was 40. Definitely, a graying gang of riders. Did you know that total motorcycle registrations account for 3% of total motor vehicle registrations, and Harley-Davidson accounts for about 1.5% of the total vehicle registrations? Did you know that the average motorcycle owner rides approximately 100 days per year, while the average length of the riding season is 10 months? There is also some bad news but news that we can make positive with better riding skills, being courteous on the road, being more aware, not drinking and riding, and taking training courses. Get a load of these statistics: 4,309 motorcycles were involved in fatal crashes last year compared to 22,263 cars. 37% of motorcycle accidents involved speeding vs 23% for cars. One in three motorcycle accidents are caused by alcohol vs one in four for cars. 21% of motorcycle accidents involve a rider with an invalid license vs 14% for cars. 98% of motorcycle crashes involve injury or death vs 20% for cars. 75% of motorcycle accidents are with another vehicle. The rest involve a stationary object or losing control. Finally, the under-40 motorcycle riders are 36 times more likely to be killed than non-riders in their age group; for cars, that number is 20 times. OK, so I end my article with some sobering statistics. As I wrote, statistics we can change. My friends, don’t become a statistic. Ride safe, ride careful, ride aware.
