The Live It Right Dream Ride

What’s the Rush? by Emily Flinkstrom

Back in April when Jay and I parked our bikes in La Paz, Bolivia and hopped on a plane back to the U.S., I believed that I was saying “adios” to my DR for good. I didn’t share this with many people, but I had reached my limits of motorcycle travel and all the uncertainty, discomforts, and challenges that come with it. In my mind, I closed the Live It Right Dream Ride chapter of my life, deeming it a success after riding 17,000 miles from Ann Arbor to the middle of South America, and was ready to move onto the next step. We would arrive back in the states, make a home for ourselves, find work, start a family, and finally feel “settled.” That comforting sense of stability and permanence is what I had been yearning for during our last month or so of travel, as I counted down the number of riding days left until Bolivia. We landed in the U.S. in mid-April, then spent the next four months traversing the country to attend weddings and figuring out post-Live It Right

Dream Ride life. When people asked about our plans, I told them that Jay would return to Bolivia to “finish” the trip, but that I was ready for what’s next. I wasn’t really sure what that “next” would look like, but once I got there, then I’d feel at peace. Then I’d have everything figured out. Then life would be great. I became determined to answer all of our big life questions before Jay left on October 1st so that I would arrive to my perfect fairytale future right as I was bidding him adieu. A few months into that planning process, we had answered absolutely zero of the questions and, as I saw my plan falling apart, my anxiety skyrocketed, my head was spinning, and I entered panic mode. I found myself searching for jobs that didn’t excite me and inquiring about bland rental apartments as I grasped at some semblance of certainty. If I could just get one foot on some stable ground, my head would stop spinning and I could start moving forward. And then one day as I was staring at my computer, the search engine filled with tabs upon tabs of job sites and property listings, I had an epiphany. Normally with revelations of this sort you can pinpoint

a catalyst; something that causes the a-ha moment. But in this instance, I think I just reached such an intense emotional limit that my brain pushed pause. Everything became quiet and a tiny voice emerged in my head politely asking, “What’s the rush?” In the freedom of this newfound space, I began exploring the motives behind my decision not to return to Bolivia. While some of the reasons relate to the simple fact that I was tired of riding my motorcycle day after day through rain, wind, and cold, the others are tied to my continual struggle with being present. It’s my age old tendency to yearn for whatever is next, chasing a light that always seems to be shining brighter just a little further down the path. I felt a weight lift off my shoulders. The truth is, I am ready for what’s next. I am so very excited to have space of our own and to cook meals in my kitchen while drinking a glass of cheap wine. I look forward to starting our own family and embarking on what I know will be another amazing adventure. I am eager to dive into work that excites and challenges me. I am ready. And all those things will be there for me to figure out in three months. In the meantime, we will return to our bikes in La Paz and continue riding south until the road ends and we can’t ride any further. When questions about the future pop up along the way and feelings of anxiety and uncertainty sneak into my head, I will do my best to continue asking, “What’s the rush?” After all, motorcycle travel, much like life, is about the journey, not the destination. Now if only I could get that to sink in through my thick helmet. After a few months of rest, work, family, and friends, The Live It Right Dream Ride will be back on the road October 1st. Test Ride

2016 Harley-Davidson Street 750 by Ray Peabody The idea was nearly perfect. I was having a conversation with Mike Moakley, owner of Battle Creek Harley-Davidson, about visiting his shop and doing a test ride on one of his 2016 demo bikes for an article. He suggested that I stop by his Fall Open House sometime on the weekend of September 11 and 12 when he would have the Harley-Davidson demo truck on site. I could ride any or all of the 2016s in a single day. I could put together enough reviews to fill pages throughout the winter. It was a plan.

Rain on Friday delayed demo rides until the late afternoon skies cleared

Unfortunately, the weather didn’t cooperate. Rain started sprinkling down about half way to his dealership and fell harder the closer I got. By the time I arrived, the road surface was wet with puddles everywhere. While I’m not a fair weather rider, the decision whether to ride in the rain wasn’t up to me. Chuck Cherry, the manager of one of six HarleyDavidson demo trucks nationwide, explained that The Motor Company prohibit demo bikes from being ridden in the rain or even when road surfaces were wet. I had to wait until the rain stopped and the roads dried. The rain fell sporadically through mid-afternoon and was sufficient to keep the roads wet. On the upside, meteorologists were forecasting clearing skies. By late afternoon, the rain stopped, skies began to clear and roads dried. Another challenge arose when Chuck told me that I would have to have one of the demo ride leaders escort me on any rides. This is unusual since I frequently stop to write notes and take pictures during these types of tests. Fortunately, Steve Sutherland, 55-year rider and Road Captain for the Battle Creek Harley Owners Group, offered to lead the test ride. He committed to taking me wherever I wanted and stopping when I wanted to stop. I was most interested in testing three models: the Screaming Eagle Road Glide Ultra, the Street Glide, and the Street 750. This might seem like an odd mix of motorcycles – especially the Street 750 – when I could choose from any of 17 motorcycles and one trike but I wanted to get a mix of motorcycles. In the end, because of the rain and lateness in the day, I ended up riding only the Street 750. Ah, the best laid plans… The Street 750 is one step up (in terms of TM

Midwest Motorcyclist

engine displacement) in the Harley lineup from the entry-level Street 500. The 500, which replaced the Buell Blast, is the motorcycle used in HarleyDavidson Rider Training Academies. The 750 is powered by a 46 cubic inch, water-cooled, fuel-injected Revolution X V-twin engine that produces 44.5 foot pounds of torque at 4,000 rpms. Harley-Davidson estimates that it should get about 41 miles per gallon from its 3.5 gallon fuel tank. Stopping power is handled by disk brakes using two-pot calipers front and rear. It sits rather low with an unladen saddle height of 28 inches. It uses a 17 inch tire and seven spoke mag wheel set out front with a 15 inch set in the rear. The 750 weighs in at 489 pounds wet. When first sitting on the bike, it felt as low as its specs suggest. It also felt slightly awkward. The saddle was firm but comfortable and the pulled-back handlebars were an easy reach. I think the awkwardness came from the foot pegs. Mounted low on the frame and positioned just forward of the saddle, they seemed too wide for comfort. We would see. Out on the road, the awkwardness I found when first sitting on the bike mostly

likely be – as I’m sure HarleyDavidson intended – a nice step up from the Street 500 on the way to the big twin cruisers and touring bikes in the line-up. The size, power, and price (MSRP $7,549 in Vivid Black) are right. Thanks to Mike Moakley, Chuck Cherry, and Steve Sutherland for making the 750 available and providing assistance for this test. For more information, visit your local Michigan Harley-Davidson Dealer Association member. A list of members can be found on page 18 of this issue or the www.MHDDA.com web site.

disappeared. It doesn’t exactly blast off from a dead stop but it accelerates quickly enough to be safe. The 750 is nicely balanced and handled the curves nicely. It cruises well whether we were pushing past 60 miles per hour and puttering along at 35. Harley doesn’t post the expected top speed of the 750 on its web site but my seat-of-the-pants estimate is that it could cruise easily at highway speeds and slightly above. The sixspeed transmission doesn’t have that heavy duty clunk of Harley’s big twins. It shifts smoothly with little effort. The brakes bring the 750 to quick, controlled stops. The bottom line on the Street 750 is that it fulfills its intended purpose. It’s intended for new or inexperienced riders but will do just about anything the rider wants from it. It’s easy and comfortable to ride. Owners can use it for quick trips around town, ride comfortably with the big bikes on Sunday afternoon tours, and even adventure more widely on multi-day trips (when accessorized with some luggage.) It would

ASK Dr. Cycholl Q&A Column For Your Questions Relating to Motorcycle Safety, Riding Techniques and Touring By Maurice “Moe” D. Cycholl

Dear Dr. Cycholl, I ride a Suzuki 1200 Bandit. When I apply the rear brakes, I feel a pulsing. I don’t have ABS. What could be causing this problem?

Consider replacing the front pads too if they are more than halfway worn. Replacing brake fluid is one of the most overlooked maintenance items and will greatly improve brake performance and extend the life of all brake components. Brake fluid should be flushed and replaced every two years. When did you last do this? Thank you, Dr Cycholl Dear Dr. Cycholl, I am a fan of old two stroke street bikes and recently found a 1974 Suzuki GT750 covered in a corner of a friends garage. He is willing to give it to me. It is cosmetically in great shape. What would I need to do - at a minimum - to get it started? Is there a dealer willing to work on old bikes like this? Ken Osterbrink, Warren MI Dear Ken,

Thanks, Steve Woodwarth

I love those old two strokers, too. Ah, yes, the three-cylinder, two-stroke GT750 “Water Buffalo.” So Dear Steve, nicknamed because of the innovative - for the time liquid cooling. It also had an innovative LED Digital The most likely cause of the problem is a Gear indicator, a feature I thought would be an warped rear rotor. There are replacements available industry standard by now. I bought a GT750 new the from Suzuki or aftermarket suppliers. As long as you summer after I gradated from high school. I loved are replacing the rotor, also replace the pads and flush that bike. I wish I still had it. the brake fluid from both front and rear systems. You will want to install a new, fully charged battery. Clean the connections and coat them with dielectric grease. Repairs and Tune-Ups on All Motorcycles, ATVs & Mini-Bikes! Drain the old fuel, if any, from the tank. If the carbs have fuel Get Ready in them, drain them, too. You • Batteries • Tires • Brakes To Ride! will likely have problems with • Accessories • Parts New / Used clogged carbs if they had fuel in • Oil Changes and Lube them. They will probably need cleaning later but try at least to Used Motorcycles, ATVs start it first without cleaning them. Put a small amount, a and Scooters Wanted! Turn the motor over a few times with the kick starter. Replace the plugs with new ones. Clean or replace the air filter. Switch the engine cutoff switch to the “Run” position. Prime the carbs by putting the fuel supply valve in the prime position. Turn the choke on, leave the throttle closed. Press the start button. If all goes well, the motor will crank and start. If it does not start, try spraying a bit of starting fluid into the air box. If it starts but only runs briefly before stalling, you likely have a fuel problem. The carbs are probably clogged. If it doesn’t even try to start, there is likely an ignition problem. Pull a plug wire and connect an old plug to it. Ground it to the head and crank the motor. Look for a spark at the plug. If there is spark and fuel, it should run. If not, there are many other potential problems, too numerous to list here. You need air, fuel and spark for an engine to run. If you have all three, it will run. If any one is missing, no start. The weakest link in a bike this old is likely fuel. You have three individual carburetors with old rubber parts and each can have plugged fuel passages. If it starts but seems to be running on less than three cylinders, you can detect which are not running by feeling for heat at the exhausts, Regardless of whether it runs or not, you will likely want to rebuild the carbs. You will also want to replace the points and condensers with an electronic ignition. Replace all rubber parts, fuel lines, rebuild the fuel supply valve, brake fluids, brake lines, tires etc. Fortunately for you, Warren Honda is one of the few dealers willing to work on old Hondas and Suzukis. You might also consider joining the Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club at http://www.vjmc.org There are also other on line resources you can find with a little effort. Good luck, it will be a fun project and having a running two stroke street bike will be different and an attention getter. Thank you, Dr Cycholl Dr. Maurice D. Triumph Detroit Celebrates 20th Anniversary Shelby Township, Michigan – Triumph Detroit celebrated the 20th Anniversary of their founding on Saturday, August 22 at their dealership. The event attracted a crowd of British motorcycle enthusiasts including members of the Metro Triumph Riders and Riders Association of Triumph (R.A.T.) Paul Lasko launched Triumph Detroit in a small, cement building on Groesbeck in Roseville, Michigan. Paul sold the dealership to his sister, Suzanne Canu and her husband, Dave, in 2003 when he took a helicopter mechanic job working on U.S. military helicopters after invasion of Iraq. Suzanne and Dave first moved the dealership to a location at the corner of Groesbeck and Martin, a short distance north of the original store. A few years ago, they moved Triumph Detroit to its current location at 50662 Van Dyke in Shelby Township, Michigan. The dealership has been recognized as one of the

top Triumph dealers in the U.S. Former Triumph CEO, Greg Heichelbech, attended the Grand Opening of their store in Shelby Township. Suzanne and Dave were part of a select group of dealers who acted as intermediaries between the dealers and the company. The couple has enjoyed great successes and remain the only Triumph dealer in Southeast Michigan. They have reason to celebrate 20 years in business. Open House visitors enjoyed food (gourmet pastries and coffee in the morning and a catered lunch later) and refreshments as well as special pricing on items throughout the store. The showroom filled with enthusiasts catching up with old friends, telling tall tales and bench racing. Unfortunately, Paul, who had planned to attend, hadn’t arrived by the time this writer departed. Overall, it was an enjoyable day. For more information, visit Triumph Detroit at 50662 Van Dyke in Shelby Township, Michigan, give the store a call at (586) 726-7400 or check out their web site at www.triumphdetroit.com.

SWAP MEETS presented by

Plymouth, Michigan – John Horner, owner of BMW Motorcycles of Southeast Michigan, announced that veteran BMW motorcycle salesman, Jeff Koenig, has returned to the dealership. Koenig, who previously worked in sales at the dealership from 2009 to 2014, assumes the role of Used Bike Sales Manager and will also be involved with new bike sales. “The pre-owned motorcycle part of our business has grown dramatically over the last couple years,” said Mr. Horner. “We recognized that we needed someone dedicated to that part of our business. When Jeff became available, we decided that he would be a good fit in that role.” Koenig is equally enthused to be returning to the dealership. “For the last year, I worked in the service department of an Audi car dealership,” said Koenig. “While I enjoyed my job, I missed working with John, Audrey, and the rest of the team here. This team has a lazer-like focus on professionalism and customer service. I missed working in this environment… And selling BMW motorcycles.” Sales Manager Audrey Jackson was also happy to have Koenig back on the team. “Jeff was an asset to our team when he was here before,” said Jackson. “He has an honest interest in helping customers find the BMW motorcycle that’s the right fit. He’s good at building relationships with people. He’s enthusiastic and he’s solution oriented. He’s a good fit with the rest of our team.” For more information, visit BMW Motorcycles of Southeast Michigan at 14855 N. Sheldon Road in Plymouth, MI,

Motorcycling & Law

People vs Lockridge (sentencing guidelines advisory as opposed to mandatory)

by Dondi Vesprini While my area of expertise remains the representation of motorcyclists injured in accidents, I previously spent time working in the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office. Because of that experience, interesting criminal decisions continue to catch my attention, especially as they may be of interest to the motorcycling community in general. I have received multiple questions from various motorcyclists at recent meetings at which I have spoken regarding the recent Michigan Supreme Court decision in People v Lockridge. I wanted to use this space to discuss the decision as it greatly impacts the way convicted criminals will be sentenced going forward here in Michigan. By way of brief background, in Michigan, criminal defendants are sentenced using a sentencing guideline formula by which points are attributed to different variables as they may or may not apply to the individual facts surrounding the Defendant or the facts of the crime. Points are assessed depending on the Defendant’s prior record and regarding various circumstances of the offense itself, such as whether a weapon was involved, physical injury to a victim, and number of victims just to name a few. Once the points are tabulated, a recommended minimum sentence is allocated based on the scoring. Under Michigan law, a judge could only to depart from the allocated guidelines sentence range when there were “substantial and compelling reasons to do so. In People v Lockridge, the Michigan Supreme Court found that the current system is unconstitutional to the extent that they require judicial factfinding beyond facts admitted by the defendant or found by the jury beyond a reasonable doubt to score offense variables that increase the floor of the guidelines minimum sentence range. As such, the Court held that while a Court must still take the sentencing guidelines into account, any minimum sentencing range which is calculated on the basis of facts not admitted by the defendant or found by the jury beyond a reasonable doubt are no longer mandatory and are instead advi-

sory in nature only. Also, Lockridge eliminated the requirement that a judge articulate “substantial and compelling reasons for sentencing outside the guidelines. Instead, sentences that depart from the guidelines will be reviewed on appeal simply for “reasonableness. The hope is that sentencing going forward will better fit the crime as the decision places much more discretion with the Judge in formulating a proper sentence. By making the guidelines simply advisory as to any range which was calculated unconstitutionally, it gives the Judge much more leeway in tailoring a sentence that is more in line with the particular circumstances of the crime itself, without having to articulate “substantial and compelling reasons to do so if the hand crafted sentence is outside what the guidelines prescribe. The decision certainly has the potential to significantly change the way sentences are issued and it will be interesting to see if it leads to sentences which are more just and properly fitted to the underlying crimes. As always, if anyone has any questions or if I can be of legal assistance to you or anyone you know who has been injured in a motorcycle accident, please don’t hesitate to contact me as I deal with these types of claims on a daily basis on behalf of injured motorcyclists statewide. Further, for those readers who are members of any motorcycle organizations, clubs or groups, if you would like to have me come out to your group to speak or give a presentation on the legal rights of an injured motorcyclist or on any specific topic that your group may be curious about, please don’t hesitate to give me a call at (248-5694646) or shoot me an e-mail at Dondi@buckfirelaw.com. I give presentations state-wide and there is never a charge associated with having me out. I enjoy having the opportunity to come out and meet motorcycle enthusiasts from all parts of our State!

Gilmore Vintage Show Goes On Despite Rain by Blane Kamp

June 14 was a rainy day for the 20th annual Gilmore Vintage Motorcycle Show and Swap Meet. It was amazing how many people came in spite of the rain. The weekend-long event includes an antique motorcycle ride and a swap meet. On-site camping is available throughout the weekend. Custom builder Ron Finch brought some of his artwork including a magnificent sculpture of a giant motorcycle. He spent 8 months constructing it with a Pratt-Whitney aircraft engine as the power plane, two 1949 Chevy pick-up rear fenders making up the gas tank and a tractor rear wheel. Ron often exhibits his art at dealerships around the state. It may not run, but it’s definitely a piece of art. The vintage show had a nice variety of classic old motorcycles, but the overall entries were way down. Some tents were set up to cover the antiques, but who wants to bring their labor of love out in the rain? Luckily, there are plenty of car exhibits to

check out in the various buildings. They have just under 500 cars and 50 motorcycles in the museum. One that I found very interesting was the HH Franklin Collection. The cars had wood frames and air-cooled engines. A 1932 Lincoln also caught my eye. What a beautiful piece of history! The swap meet had a nice assortment of used parts and motorcycles. A couple of the motorcycles that stood out were Mike Tafil’s 1975 RE5 Roary Suzuki and Bruce Bodell’s 1970 Moto

Guzzi Ambassador. The Suzuki only had 5,100 miles on it. Both motorcycles fired up with very little effort. Vintage enthusiasts John and Carol Blackmore from the Wolverine Club were camping with Mike and Lynn Johnson. Well, kind of camping; they both had 40-foot motorhomes. They enjoyed themselves despite the rain and their hospitality was exceptional. We were representing BMW Motorcycles of

Grand Rapids and Dave Reynolds was there from Life Cycle. Dave had a nice assortment of Zero electric motorcycles from dirt to street bikes. Quiet as can be, but lots of power in those machines. Dave’s quote of the day: “Change or be stuck in the past.” There is a lot to be said for the new electrics. It’s just strange not having any engine noise. Dave also brought Ducati’s new Scrambler. It is a retro-styled enduro bike that looks like tons of fun. I spoke with Mike Spezia, Executive Director of the Museum, about the show. He said, “the number of people here despite the poor weather indicates the show is strong and both the participants and the visitors love this campus and all the collections.” He was right.

Even in the rain, it was well worth coming.

Autumn Riding by Jason Waechter, Esq. I’m not going to say summer is over. I’m not going to say Midwest motorcyclists are running out of time to ride. And, I’m not going to say I’ve been thinking about storing my bike for the winter… not yet anyway. While the temperature does seem to be dipping lower, there is still plenty of time to get out and enjoy the open road. Riding in the Midwest in October and November (we hope!) requires a little more planning and preparation compared to riding in the summer, but it’s worth it: with county fairs and cider mills, there are all kinds of things to see and do at this time of year. One of the things motorcyclists need to prepare for in October and November is deer. The autumn months encompass migration, mating season, and, of course, hunting season. Just generally, that means more deer on the move, particularly around dusk and dawn. There has been a steady increase in deer-vehicle collisions in Midwest states, as populations increase because of fewer predators, and deer habitats are shrinking as cities sprawl. In Michigan alone, there were nearly 50,000 deer-vehicle collisions in 2013, and of these incidents, 1,200 involved injuries and 12 people were killed, according to the Michigan Deer Crash Coalition. Hitting a deer with any vehicle is bad news, but it can be particularly dangerous for motorcyclists. Experts recommend learning and practicing braking techniques and evasive maneuvers in a controlled environment. There are many options for advanced rider skills training that will cover these

techniques and others. Deer crossing signs are frequently placed in areas with high deer traffic; watch for them and adjust your speed accordingly. Ensure that your headlight is operational before you set out, and use high beams at night when possible. If you’re travelling as part of a group. leave plenty of space between bikes and use a formation that will prevent a single deer-bike collision from turning into a multibike incident. Finally, remember that deer travel in herds; if you see one, you’re likely to see more. Another thing we need to watch for at this time of year is weather. What starts out as a beautiful day can become a downpour in very little time. A quick ride around the block might not require much extra planning, but if you plan to cover any distance, check the forecast beforehand both for where you are starting out, and where you plan to end up. If possible, choose a few spots where you know you could stop to wait out the worst of the weather if you had to. Pack rain gear, even if there’s only a slight chance of showers; there are a lot of lightweight, easy-topack items that won’t get in the way but will help you stay dry if needed. The roads tend to be most slippery just after it has started raining, or during a light

shower, or even during a heavy morning dew or frost. The reason? Light rain is enough to lift oil, fluids, and other junk off the surface of the road, but not enough to wash it away. Some experts suggest riding in the tire ruts or closer to the center line, in order to avoid the middle of the lane, which tends to be dirtiest. Finally, while I always recommend checking tire pressure before a ride, it becomes even more important to do so at this time of year, when the temperature can drop very low at night but get fairly high during the day. Big temperature swings can have a significant effect on tire pressure. Use a reliable tire gauge, and check your tires while they’re cold. Keep a portable air tank on hand for days when you need a quick top up. We want to see your best autumn riding photos! The Preacher Speaks About ...

Tech Talk

Harley-Davidson

by Franz Hoffer I’ve heard so many things and read quite a few articles about all the problems with Harley-Davidson motorcycles. I don’t know if they are true or not. None of the Harleys I’ve owned has ever broken down or left me stranded so I have a very high opinion of Harley. To get to the bottom of some of these issues, I made a list of all the ills I’ve heard about Harley and took them to Jerry B, the top Harley mechanic (Jerry and his wife, Michelle, own Jerry B’s Cycle Works located at 25430 Harper, St. Clair Shores, MI 48081, Ph.# 586-773-BIKE). The Preacher (TP): Hi, Jerry. I hope it’s been a good year for you. Jerry B (JB): It’s been a pretty good year, topped by becoming a grandpa; a baby boy. TP: Congratulations Jerry, I assume he will be riding soon and helping out in the shop. I hear his name is “Little Jer.” Anyway, I’ve heard people talk about how bad Harley’s are, how unreliable, etc…I’ve never had a problem with my Harley but that could be because my bike is one of “Jerry’s Kids,”to steal a line. I’d appreciate your comments on these so we can confirm or debunk them once and for all.

Dealer Events

For a complete list of Michigan Harley-Davidson Dealer Association Members, see the dealer locator on page 19.

JB: They do go out of balance but I wouldn’t call it “easily.” It’s actually pretty rare but it could happen. A crankshaft going out of balance on just about any bike is mostly from abuse. TP: In the old days, there was a saying that you can always tell where a Harley has been because they leave their mark….an oil leak. Quite a few have told me that most Harley’s get an internal oil leak caused by the O ring between the engine case and cam plate at about 8,000 miles. JB: No such thing. Whoever told you that does not know Harleys. There is a seal on the other side that can go bad and draw motor oil into the primary chain-case but that is also rare

JB: “Jerry’s Kids”….I like that. Go ahead and ask away.

TP: Transmission trouble. The transmission didn’t keep up with the new higher horsepower engines and problems occur....usually with the 5th or 6th gear.

TP: I’ve heard that lifter blocks fail quicker on Harley’s than other bikes?

JB: Haven’t had or heard of any issues, again pretty rare to have trans problems.

JB: Never heard of lifter block failure. However, the hydraulic lifter units are more prone to blow the bearings out of the rollers. Although the problem is rare since around the 1997 models, 1996 and older lifters blew often. So I would say yes, pre 1996, that’s a true statement but not since 1997.

TP: I hear this one all the time, Jerry. VTwins are out of date. Other engines are more efficient.

JB: Well-known fact, HD motors use dinosaur technology but that’s what makes them fun to ride and sound like no other motor. Most other bikes are fun to ride as long as you’re beating on them, they can be TP: A lot of people criticize H-D for their boring when you’re cruising. A Harley is use of belt drives. They claim that belt drive fun at just about any speed. Put a Harley in can be an expensive replacement....direct a parking lot with some of those other drive or chain drive is better. brands and guess which one will draw the most looks and the biggest crowd. JB: Belt replacement is expensive, averaging around $700 to $800. Basic chains average TP: Twin Cam engines from 1999 to 2006 $100 but require a lot of maintenance; i.e., have inadequate oil pumps. every 500 miles, clean chain in mineral spirits and re-lube. Chains require constant JB: Oil pumps work well until fragments adjusting. O-ring chains require less from the chain tensioners go thru the pump. maintenance but are heavier which causes We did a Tech-Talk article on that a couple early sprocket wear. It is rare to break a months ago, so no need to expand on that. belt; I have bikes with over 200,000 miles on the original belts. Belts require zero TP: The starter gear wears out too soon. maintenance and no adjustments after the initial 1,000 mile check. JB: Rare, more problems with 1993 and older systems. TP: I’ve heard crankshafts on Harley’s go out of balance easily.

JB: Hey, wait a minute. You missed a few that I think the readers should know about. Primary / trans leaks caused by bad seals or the primary inner race moving on the transmission main-shaft. The race can move from abuse or the belt adjusted too tight. I do one or two per week during the season on bikes with as little as 20,000 miles; that’s premature. Charging system is another weak point, we go thru a lot of starters and regulators.

JB: You know, most problems I see are from abuse or lack of maintenance. I would guess about 60% of HD owners just dump the oil and call it maintenance. Harleys definitely have their issues as do other bikes. No bike is perfect. The best way to keep your Harley on the road and out of the shop is preventative maintenance. You mentioned that you’ve never broken down or been stranded on your bike. But you also bring it in once a year for regular maintenance and, as part of my service to my customers, aside from the work you request, I check the bike out pretty thoroughly. How many times have I suggested you do something after you’ve brought it in? I don’t want to toot my own horn, but I’d put a well maintained Harley against any bike out there. TP: No arguments there Jerry, you’ve taken good care of me and my bike. Based on the number of satisfied customers you have, I’d say I speak for all of them. Thanks for your time, experience, and candor. Folks, there you have it. The true HD story from the real H-D mechanic.
