Christina Zimpel (Perth, 1961) creció en Perth, Australia Occidental. Actualmente vive en Nueva York y trabaja en su estudio en el Brooklyn Navy Yard.
Rostros, cuerpos e incluso algún bodegón ocasional cobran vida con un enfoque audaz, aunque minimalista. Las obras de Zimpel parecen flotar en un espacio alternativo, donde lo que delinea con su pincel o sus llamativas y saturadas elecciones de color es tan crucial para la imagen como lo que decide omitir, sublimar o sugerir. “Exagero, reduzco y modernizo arquetipos”, afirma.
Sus figuras, típicamente femeninas y con un aire victoriano, son retratadas en poses contenidas utilizando combinaciones de colores poco convencionales, dando lugar una sensación que resulta tan atractiva como inquietante. De alguna manera, estos amplios planos de color están cargados de emoción y de un deseo desenfrenado por romper las reglas de la pintura figurativa. La artista atribuye esta sensibilidad a sus vivencias de juventud en la Australia de los años 70, así como a las enseñanzas folclóricas de su madre húngara, entrelazándose ambas en sus pinturas.
Sin embargo, donde Zimpel parece permitirse en mayor medida los excesos es en las posturas y estilismos de estas mujeres glamurosas (o aspirantes a serlo). Especialmente en los lujosos peinados, que le permiten pinceladas desenfrenadas que se curvan e introducen un exceso visual dentro de sus composiciones, aludiendo a fuentes de inspiración como el punk, la Belle Époque y el románico.
Christina Zimpel (Perth, 1961) grew up in Perth, Western Australia. She currently lives in New York and works in her studio at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
Faces, bodies, and even the occasional still life come to life with a bold yet minimalist approach. Zimpel’s works seem to float in an alternative space, where what she delineates with her brush or her striking, saturated color choices is as crucial to the image as what she decides to omit, sublimate, or suggest. “I exaggerate, reduce, and modernize archetypes,” she states.
Her figures, typically feminine and with a Victorian air, are depicted in restrained poses using unconventional color combinations, creating a sensation that is as captivating as it is unsettling. Somehow, these large planes of color are charged with emotion and an unrestrained desire to break the rules of figurative painting. The artist attributes this sensitivity to her youth in 1970s Australia, as well as the folkloric teachings of her Hungarian mother, both of which intertwine in her paintings.
However, where Zimpel seems to allow herself the most indulgence is in the poses and stylings of these glamorous (or aspiring-to-be-glamorous) women.
Particularly in their luxurious hairstyles, which allow for unbridled brushstrokes that curl and introduce a visual excess into her compositions, alluding to sources of inspiration such as punk, the Belle Époque, and Romanesque art.
