VERGL AS Antoine Verglas is a New York City based, Parisien born photographer. He is known for his aesthetic of intimately capturing the person behind the camera and modernizing lingerie and swimwear photography . He has been published in and continues to shoot for the world’s top fashion and men’s lifestyle magazines such as Elle, Harper’s Baazar, Esquire, GQ Maxim, Sports Illustrated, Vogue, and more. Consequently, he has photographed the biggest celebrities and supermodels. A.V attended France’s prestigious E.S.C. business school. After graduating, he started his career on the other side of the camera as a host for a popular French television show. He used this as an advantage to transition into fashion photography . His big break came in the late sos when he traveled between NY and LA to capture intimate and personal portraits of budding “supermodels” within their homes. Among these models were Linda Evangelista, Stephanie Seymour, Claudia Schiffer, and Cindy Crawford.
All of A.V’s black and white photos and interviews were published in French Elle, as well as in several international editions. Verglas is the master of extracting natural beauty and charm from otherwise sexy and enticing photos. His technique to find lighting that embellishes the subject and enhance their beauty has become known as the “Verglas Signature”. Inspired by certain photographers like Peter Lindberg, Patrick Demarchelier, and Herb Ritts, A.V likes “true, natural beauty,” which he aims to convey through lingerie and swimwear shoots, but also fashion and beauty. A.V spends his time between St. Barth, East Hampton, Paris, and New York City. He has two sons, Julien and Adrien. In 2008, after selling Calypso St. Barth, he and Christiane Celle co-founded the concept store, Clic Gallery. Verglas has published two books of his work: SHOWGIRL (Gravure 2011) and Untitled (Clic 2013). Verglas continues to shoot for campaigns and magazines, and is working on a new book.

WONDERS of the UNIVERSE
Stargazing became an obsession for Stephen Thompson, an Irish expat who has lived in Sint Maarten since 1970. By day, he is the owner of the Guavaberry Emporium in Philipsburg; by night he befriends and shoots stars with a variety of astro and regular cameras, setting his sights on the moon, the planets, and the stars of the Milky Way. “I love to show people that there is a lot of exciting stuff going on up there that can be seen without hugely expensive or sophisticated equipment,” he explains. “When we look up at the sky we are looking back in time. We don’t see what is there, we see what was there when the light beam left there and that can be billions of years ago.” Stephen continues: “But there is no need to go so far. Scientists spend their whole lives studying the moon and it is close by, only 240,000 miles away. Its reflected light takes only 1.3 seconds to reach us. Light from the sun takes eight minutes. But light from the Andromeda Galaxy takes 2.5 million years to reach us. And we can often see it with the naked eye from a dark sky location on Sint Maarten, St Barth, and Anguilla.”
LUNAR ECLIPSE LUNAR LANDINGS AND IPHONES This photo was taken with a beautiful small telescope from Sint Maarten a few years ago. The Moon is (normally) illuminated by direct light from the Sun. But during a lunar eclipse that light is blocked by the earth. The sun, earth and moon are in a “straight line.” Each lunar eclipse is a bit different. Here we show the “dim” red light, which is reflected by the Earth’s atmosphere. The umbral shadow is blue and the white light is unavoidably overexposed, the thinnest sliver of direct sunlight. Remember that NASA landed men on the moon six times. And brought them back. The last manned lunar landing was in 1972. Most souls living today were not born in 1972. Your iPhone is more a sophisticated computer than those on the lunar-landing vehicles.
IN THE WEE SMALL HOURS OF THE MORNING For a while the Wind Surf sailed every week at night from Gustavia to Great Bay. A tall ship with full rigging lights on, sailing and swaying towards you on the balmy coast in complete darkness is always exciting. But the tall skinny images taken at 1/100th of a second never quite conveyed the appropriate romance. So this series began as an experiment. We left the shutter open for a few seconds and then 10 and 20 and more.
ST BARTH, TALL SHIPS, STARTRAILS
FROM RIVERS OF MILK TO LIVING FOREVER‌ I became obsessed with capturing the Milky Way Galaxy floating above our neighboring islands, only possible at a certain time of year. The Milky Way is our home galaxy, seen in the photo from within, above and behind the lights of St Barth, St Kitts and St Eustatius. The Milky Way is 100-200,000 light years in diameter, with 100-500 billion stars and maybe as many planets, a densely packed ancient river of white milk flowing across the dark night sky. Light travels 6 trillion miles in one year. Through fancy telescopes we can see galaxies billions of light years away. There are 150 billion galaxies in the universe. The numbers and distances defy the imagination. And yet so far, in all this vast cosmos, it is only on our own tiny rocky planet, that intelligent life is known to exist. A basic understanding of the heavens brings wonder and humility and may lead us to care more about our fragile lives and the stewardship of our fragile planet. Life is precious. The Earth is special. If we could only learn to live in harmony with each other and to care more for Mother Earth, the human race could last forever.
