Barracuda: “A large, predatory, ray-finned fish known for its fearsome appearance and ferocious behavior.” W I K I P E D I A
Story By George Pich Photos By David Gates
G
lenn Hamilton’s wild Ultra Street 1967 Plymouth Barracuda certainly checks off all of the aforementioned boxes, except the fish part, of course. Hamilton has been racing for over 25 years in various cars and along the way he was subconsciously developing the design of what he calls his “dream car”. It would have to be something out of the ordinary, definitely attention getting and be seriously quick. A little over 10 years ago, Glenn decided it was time to finally take all those ideas from years of cars and racing and put them to work in a new build.

Refined and streetwise on the surface...deep down... this veteran muscle car is a
merciless hunter...
The first step was to find just the right car, and for Glenn that would have to be a Mopar, specifically, a Barracuda. The thing about most Mopar muscle car offerings is that they look mean and fast, so there’s not much they need in the way of appearance work, but make no mistake, Hamilton would hit every single area of this car with as much high-end parts and detail as possible, and the result is nothing short of stunning! 14

Trick Flow by Cometic MLS Head Gaskets for 18 Degree Cylinder Heads With three layers of stainless steel, these head gaskets are the best way to keep combustion where it belongs. They are ideal for high horsepower applications, providing better torque retention, less distortion, and better sealing than conventional or composite head gaskets.
Fabricated Aluminum Valve Covers These good-looking, tall height (37 ⁄8" overall) fabricated valve covers not only look great, but more importantly, they clear the shaft mount rocker system used on hi-po engines with 18 degree heads. They’re made from .084" thick aluminum to reduce engine weight and include the necessary fasteners to ensure a correct installation.
True Roller Timing Chain Set Billet steel gears and a double roller timing chain combine to make this Trick Flow True Roller Timing Chain Set the strongest, most accurate available today. Furthermore, the crank sprocket features multiple keyways to allow the cam to be installed straight-up, retarded, or advanced.

Glenn Hamilton with his admitted “dream car”. It took 10 years to build but is worth every hour and dollar spent. With the car being completed in 2021 and just a handful of passes on it, Glenn has wheeled it to 4.70s in the 1/8th mile at over 150MPH in Ultra Street trim!
The ’67 would soon find itself stripped to the bones where Gary Naughton Race Cars would take over and integrate an Ultra Street class legal 25.3 chromoly backhalf chassis and cage with the factory frame rails and floor. To keep things serviceable with easy to source parts, the front suspension was built by Maryland Performance Specialties as a oneoff factory bolt-in Mustang strut front end with Racecraft lower control arms, drop spindles and Afco double adjustable struts with Stiletto 20° billet rack.

The floors and frame, along with all the suspension work were then powder coated by Powder Coat Express. The front clip started off as a VFN glass unit that was modded by Gary Naughton Race Cars to fit the factory grills and headlights along with building the one of kind low air dam, turbo inlet and bracing, all while keeping the factory style functional hood. That low profile hood is also a VFN piece as are the rear bumper and trunk lid. any of the car styles offered by the Big 3 looked great, but almost all lacked any type of substantial horsepower due to tougher new emissions laws throughout North America. Thankfully, it wasn’t too long before manufacturers figured out how they could build decent “cleaner” power – with the Buick Grand National and Mustang GT being two solid examples of how this new evolution in engines started.
The second generation of General Motors’ G-Body platform ran production from 1982-1988 across several brands including the Buick Regal, Oldsmobile Cutlass, Pontiac Grand Prix Chevrolet Malibu and of course, the Monte Carlo. Each of these were good looking cars with the 2 door Malibu and Monte Carlo among the most popular in the mix, and it wasn’t long before gearheads started swapping out their horsepower-limiting smog-legal parts for hardcore go-fast goodies.

A Monte SS with towering carbon injection hat sticking out of the hood and a ’chute hanging off the back with small tires and stock suspension commands some pretty serious looks, not to mention questions, when it rolls into the track.
Knowing that he wanted something different when it came time to look for his most recent car to build, Chad Fernell fell in love with this 1987 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS. Like most enthusiasts and racers, Chad grew up going to the track with his father and quickly found himself driving Junior dragsters. His first actual race car was a 1986 Camaro on nitrous that he raced back in the ‘90s. After his Monte Carlo purchase, he kept going where he left off with the Camaro, initial-

Eventually, he crossed paths with some well-known radial tire racers, Jeff and Patrick Miller, and they talked him into trying a different type of power adder; boost. But not just the usual turbo or centrifugal blower, no sir, instead Fernell went big and bad, mixing old school with high tech in his towering roots-blown LS build. Eric Kenward originally built “Sniper” (as the Monte
is known) at EKR for X275 as his personal car, however, since Chad is a big no-time racer, a few chassis items needed attention for the new combination and what better place to take it than to the people who helped talk him into changing it. Jeff at BumbleBee Racing took care of the chassis and suspension tweaks needed to compete in no-time trim with the new boosted motor, but don’t think this is a full-on chassis car, as it still sits on the stock

As you might have (instantly) guessed, that 305 is nowhere to be found in Fernell’s build and instead a heavily fortified Dart block-based LS with Kobelco 1071 Roots huffer on top now sits between the rails. Since this is a grudge and notime car, we don’t have extensive engine details, suffice it to say though, changes from Jim Honeycutt of Honeycutt Racing Engines were many. The rotating assembly consists of a Callies billet crank, GRP billet aluminum rods and custom Ross pistons. Jim’s camshaft spec’d for the blower combination completes the short block and with large amounts of boost in mind, BR7 heads from Brodix were used to provide the path of least resistance. and 1st Gen Camaros, so when Chad pulls in with his Monte SS, he generally draws attention. Being different is one thing, but pulling a Roots-blown LS with small tires, towering carbon injection hat and stock suspension out of the trailer commands some pretty se-
rious looks, not to mention questions. While Chad has not had an abundance of seat time in the SS, to date his favorite experience has been doing that very first burnout in a blower car. “It’s intoxicating,” and he can’t thank the Millers enough for steering him in this
direction. And now, while Chad may have the Sniper’s sights set on winning the next grudge race, his two sons Channing and Cruz, can’t wait to step out of their Junior dragsters and into the Monte, that is if dad will give up the driver’s seat!

ob Clayton was interested in cars as a child, but developed a true passion for power when he got a 1991 Mustang GT for graduating high school. He soon hooked up with a group of like-minded friends and enthusiasts, and began modifying the car for action on the street. In 1992 he tried his luck at the dragstrip and has been drag racing ever since. His attraction to fast cars was pretty much a hobby, but after a magazine article on his 2003 Mustang Cobra, he dove into the deeper end. “After I witnessed the competition in heads-up drag racing, one thing led to another and I took it on as a serious sport,” Clayton explained. “I went through a few cars with each one becoming faster and faster and by 2010 I started racing in X275 and raced that class for 11 years all over the east coast.” Bob would rack up a number of wins with his family by his side and forge friendships among his peers that have stood the test of time.

The build, fit and finish is second to none on the Shelby...
In 2021, Clayton decided to step up to the next level and threw his hat into racing Pro275. “Pro275 would take my team to their limit and we would learn much much more,” he added. During his freshman year in the class, Bob had his eye on a friend’s 1967 Shelby GT 500 that was debuted in 2019 as a purpose-built Pro275 car by Skinny Kid Race Cars/Bill Gilsbach. “The build, fit and finish is second to none on the Shelby. I had a dream to one day own this car and it finally came true in September 2021.” Having this particular car was something that was meant to be since Bob has a true passion for the Shelby GT500s, owning a number of them over the years and currently driving a 1,000+ horsepower 2020 GT500 on the street. “There’s just something about these cars that attract me,” he said with a smile.

a sixsecond Toyota Starlet? What even is a Toyota Starlet? Story & Photos by Eddie Maloney
W
ell…the Starlet was produced in Japan from 1973 to 1999 as a subcompact and was briefly exported to North America from 1981 to 1984. Given the limited export window, it’s likely you’ve never seen one beside you on the highway (and if you did you probably wouldn’t remember it anyway), let alone at the dragstrip, however, there is a strong following for these cars for a few simple reasons; they are light and versatile! Two key 78
components in building a winning drag car. I know, you’re thinking big deal, anyone can make a car that light run quick, but try doing it with a Toyota 4 cylinder engine! So, while you may have half the weight, you also have half the engine, and this wicked little Starlet runs 6-second 1/4-mile hits… nuff said! “Starlet” refers to a young actress with aspirations to become a star, and there’s no doubt that this Starlet, also known as “Jenny Is Back”, has definitely become well known

The Starlet weighed just 1,620lbs from the factory. With the give and take of the build (taking away glass and heavy trim but adding a cage and turbo), it most likely sits pretty close to that now.

among her peers. And since Jenny De Jesus is a co-owner of the car, the name just works. You will mostly find these cars racing on the Atlantic coast, from the Northeast to Puerto Rico. Atco Raceway in New Jersey and Orlando Speedworld Dragway in Florida predominantly host most of the racing action for Toyota Starlets, but you can also find some heavy hitters competing at the World Cup which happens every November in Maryland. If you have not had the opportunity to see these

cars in action, we strongly recommend doing so. Mixing in big horsepower with a short wheelbase, light weight and high RPMs, these cars are a handful to drive. The pilots are truly in a class of their own and many drivers from other top-level classes admit they’d rather not get behind the wheel of one.
Chances are with the factory 44 available horsepower (53HP in the performance version) the Starlet was not the choice of performance enthusiasts. Originally, it would have seen a top speed of 88MPH, a far cry from the close to 200MPH it now runs. Efren has wheeled Jenny to a best time of 6.90 @ 198 mph in the quarter mile.

Surprisingly the Starlet came as a rear wheel drive compact, all of which is long gone. A heavily fortified fabricated 9-inch with 4.56 gears now resides aft and is suspended by a 4-link/ double adjustable coilover setup.
5500cc billet injectors feed the small but mighty mill a healthy dose of Methanol. Most Starlets in drag racing row through gears of a standard transmission, and Jenny is no different. Backing the potent turbo’d 4-hole is a Liberty’s 5-speed with a dual disc clutch from Direct Clutch in Australia that transfers power to a well-fortified custom fabricated Ford 9-inch housing with 4.56 gears. Engine and fuel management on the beast is provided by a FuelTech FT550 LITE system which also looks after traction control and datalogging, and an FT Spark Hi Energy CDI ignition controls the spark, all monitored on the Racepak Dash. Spindle mount front adjustable struts were incorporated into the factory suspension and that tough as nails 9-inch hangs
from a 4-link with double adjustable coilovers outback, allowing those monster 33-inch diameter 10.5 Mickey’s to be stuffed up into the wheelwells. Half the fun of watching these Starlets during a run is seeing the suspension go to work off the hit and through the gears, all while Efren tries to keep it pointed straight. To date, the Starlet’s best run is a 6.90 in the quarter at a tick over 198mph, making it a solid force to reckon with, and with Jenny (the car) looking to continue the ride to stardom, we’re sure there’s more to come. So next time you’re strolling through the pits of an event featuring these nasty little 4-cylinder compacts be sure to sit a spell and watch, but bring some earplugs because the sound of 10,000RPMs is not for the faint of heart!
