When Ford an nounced the Mustang at the World’s Fair in 1964, its popularity was instant. Since then, it has gone through many variations, appealing to both collec tors, street car enthusiasts and racers alike. One of the Mustang’s editions was the California Special or GT/ CS. In 1968, roughly 4,100 California Special Mustangs were produced. As one might guess from its name, the California Special was geared solely toward the California market and was originally made available only to select Ford dealers within two specific Califor nia sales districts. Why, you ask? Simply because those two sales districts led the nation in sales of the Ford Mustang. Te1968 Califor nia Special is more signifi cant in automobile history then people may realize. Tis was the first “special edition” and “fully custom izable” Mustang that Ford created and it paved the way for many others. september

The car is 1 of 23 Grabber Blue California Specials made in 2011. When purchased Bo Webb’s GT/CS had 53,000 miles and served as his daily driver with 4 different combinations running mid 9s. The car currently has 159,000 on the clock. september 2022
Ford’s aim was the creation of a “Shelby” type car, at a GT price tag, so it might not have the big performance add-ons, but would definitely look the part. It would take another 40 years before Ford would re-introduce the California Special back into its lineup for the 2007 model year, and fast forwarding to 2022, the GT/CS is now being offered in several variations in many countries.Itwasthat history and leg acy of the California Special that ultimately led Carlisle, Ohio native Bo Webb into building his 2011 CS. Like most people taking up the hobby of horsepower, Bo’s love of cars started at young age, and watching NHRA drag racing and the legends of Funny Cars like Don Prud homme and Tom McEwen battle it out lef a huge im pression on him through the 1970s on.
Bo originally wanted a fast daily driver that could run True Street type classes, but that eventually snowballed into what it is today.

”I have owned several old muscle cars includ ing some Chevys,” Webb explains, “But my first Mustang was a 1982 GT and that’s what stuck. I have owned several Fox Body cars; turbo, su percharged etc.” He was so heavily impacted by cars, Bo started work ing at a body shop in his twenties and did paint and body for 15-plus years before moving on to Duramax diesels at the dealership level and then landing in his current career in Pow ersports. september

Bo Webb’s GT/CS looks this good due to non-stop work since a wreck in September 2021 up to the Monday before the Norwalk race this year. On the dyno at BA Motorsports it made 4-digit power with the current setup. Webb’s Special Mustang makes a hit at the track!
Limited Production Grabber Blue California
Webb enjoyed the new-to-him Mustang for about a month be fore he started adding parts, but had absolutely no intention of racing it at that point. “Little did I know my friends were purchas ing their new cars and adding superchargers and turbos. So, as you can imagine it snowballed from there, meaning I would eventually get in on the fun!” september
“I do most of my own work and wrench on my close friend’s cars including being Crew Chief for Kelly Shotwell with his Limited Street car that we came in 2nd with, narrowly missing a champi onship in 2018, and now run in Renegade/Ultra Street.” Bo purchased his California Special on Memorial Day 2015. He was looking specifically for a Grabber Blue Coyote car and wanted a 6-speed manual. “I was on my way to trade my 2008 Mus tang GT in for a red 2012 when my friend found this one in an ad at a local Honda dealership. He pulled in and saw it in the back of the lot and noticed it was a glass roof car, and that sealed the deal!
The Whipple 3.8-liter supercharger is a popular choice among Coyote owners. With the right setup, it can handle/make nearly 2,000 horsepower! www.rpmmag.com september

First came drag wheels and tires, a Boss intake and a ni trous kit and the car went 10.80 in Bowling Green at the NMRA World finals 2017 and Bo ended up winning the 11-second average in the True Street class. Ten came suspension, a Roush supercharger and soon the CS was running consistent 9.80s, all while being driven daily. Tat wasn’t enough for Bo, though, as he then changed to a 2.9-liter Whipple su percharger, installed an 8.50 certified cage and several other gofast parts, and with that combination he won the 10-second averages in True Street at Nor walk in 2021. Bo was re ally getting the hang of things and found some solid success in compe tition with the NMRA. Fast forward to Sept 9th, 2021, a day Bo will never forget; “I hit a wall at a test and tune at a local track called Edge water Motorsports Park and took out the driv er side of the car along with the lef front sus pension, k-member and of course similar dam age at the rear of the car.” Te Mustang was rebuilt over the winter and Webb replaced all the damaged parts with new. september

NMRA’s 8.60 index class is new for 2022 and is slowly becoming one of the most popular categories in competition.
While the California Special was initially only available in Califor nia, it did eventually make its way to other parts of the country (and world) for its second offerings and beyond. Story & Photos By Eddie Maloney
The Demon was a personal project for Chris and his wife Marlene, taking two years to lovingly rebuild. They found the car at a Mecum auction and quickly formulated a dedicated race car plan.
september Te original MSRP for the Demon was around 85,000 US dollars, if you could get your hands on one, that is. Some of these Demons were selling for nearly double that price when everyone found out what the car was all about. While the Demon was dubbed a race car, you could still purchase it with optional passenger and rear seats, sunroof, and a full luxury package. Most people’s interest in the Demon was for its performance capabil ities, though, as it made 840 horsepower on race fuel with the infamous “red key” (which turned on a host of perfor mance features). When Dodge tested it at the race track it ran a 9.54 at over 140 miles per hour, prompting a “ban” from NHRA sanctioned racetracks.
www.rpmmag.com september
Despite being a fairly heavy production car, the Demon body is just as it came from the factory. The car is missing some “regular production car” equipment and options that help shave off some weight, but at the same time, items such as the parachute and cage put some of that poundage back on.
“My passion for cars and racing comes from generations of race car builders and enthu siasts. Growing up alongside my uncles, building vehicles in their garages developed a natural drive and desire to want to go fast and to build my own race car. Tis drive led me to opening our per formance shop now known as Baily’s Hyperformance Factory in July of 2007,” explained Chris.
september Te Demon did not come equipped with an SFI certified roll cage which, at that time, was required for any vehicle running 9.99 elapsed times or 135 mph, but needless to say, the Dodge Demon now sat in top spot for factory performance cars and everybody wanted to get their hands on one. Before we dive into Chris Bai ly’s record setting Dodge Demon, it’s important to understand the background of Chris, and his success.
Earlier in its life cycle under Baily’s direction, the Demon was able to accomplish an 8.47 in the ¼ mile with a Magnuson 2650 supercharger and stock trans mission. This was something that people said could only be accomplished by adding a built transmission and nitrous.

heBaily’saddedhard work and dedica tion paid off with multiple re cords to their credit and being able to assist hundreds of cus tomers with accomplishing their personal goals. Tey became known for building fast Mopars, but for select few special custom ers they will even dive into GM builds.
The Demon boasted the largest functional production hood scoop opening at 45.2 square inches. Just 3,300 Demons were produced in 2018, 3,000 went to the United States and 300 to Canada.
Baily’s started building imports and has since evolved into being one of the leading shops in the Mopar performance world. “We have been in business for fifeen years and throughout this time we have really focused on per fecting our trade and equipping our customers with top-of-theline equipment to provide them with horsepower they can trust,”

The comfortable yet race oriented De mon interior remains fully street legal with stand-alone ECU, heat, and air con ditioning. A roll cage was added to meet sanctioning body rules, but other than a few small additional items for the busi ness of drag racing, it’s factory stock. september In 2021, Chris and his wife decided to take the racing as pect of their business to the next level, pairing his knowl edge building race engines with his uncle and adapting that into the modern HEMI platform. Te next step was to find the right car to build to showcase their abilities, and that’s when they found the Demon. “It was at the Me cum auctions a few years ago. We spotted something that we knew we could turn into a race car and my wife and I came up with a plan and decided to make this strictly a track-on ly car that would really show what we can do.”

With the Demon already a few years ahead its time, the Baileys were able to brainstorm and plan ways to make it better and faster. Chris teamed up with some of the best companies in the industry and started accomplishing things that nobody thought possible. To date, Chris holds the record for a Demon, running 7.99 at over 172 miles per hour. Te Demon already had a great platform but thanks to a lot of research and develop ment, Baily’s Demon continues to transform and perform. What really stands out most about this particular Demon is that, while it has some one-off parts, much of it is “stock.” Tere are zero chassis modifications, and it also utiliz es the factory Bilstein shocks and Brembo brakes.
september Chris plans to continue im provement on not only his car, but his customer’s cars, as well. We’ve already mentioned that there are no chassis mods on Baily’s car, and the same can be said for the body and exterior of the Demon, except for the body wrap, of course. Te list of factory stock stuff grows in the power, trans mission and driveline depart ment, too. Humble and Charitable: Chris and his wife Marlene regularly make donations of all their race winnings to B Loved Ethiopia. Several years ago, B Loved’s founders felt called to a town in Ethiopia called Sodo. As one of the poorest cities in Ethiopia, many children become orphans having lost both of their parents due to HIV or sickness. We talked with a friend in Ethiopia to help us figure out what was the best way to care for these children and give them the next best thing to a biological family and to ensure they are ready for the future God has for them. We came up with a plan to help as many children in this community as possible. This led us to form a nonprofit called B Loved Foundation, with the intention that every child should B Loved. What we created was small group homes of 8 children per home and hired moms to live in each home. Families were created with brothers and sis ters these children could grow up with and a mom who will care for them. We also hired a project director who is the father figure for the children. Currently we are taking care of 56 children in 8 homes and are in the process of building a development center.

If you are in involved in doorslammer, outlaw, small tire, big tire or street car drags in any way, then you’ve heard the name Lambert. If you haven’t, then crawl out from under that rock or out of mom’s basement, get to the drag strip and live life!

Of the Lambert racing family, Randy Lambert has man aged to keep in the mix of the “fast guys” for over 25 years, and his new first Gen Camaro is his wildest ride yet. Te streets are where Randy cut his teeth in racing, just a few miles from the nation’s capital. “It was V Street where a group of us raced regularly and this got me hooked on not only the power and rush of racing, but also the competition of it,” Lambert said. A number of years later, Randy would take his rac ing to the strip and run in the 5.0 Shootouts.

“After 30-40 runs, the VP Pro Grade Oil still looks like new. Coming from the Pro Stock world, I’m huge on data acquisition, so I monitor every asset of the engine. Once I put VP Pro Grade oil in, I noticed that the vacuum went up a half inch compared to the Mobil 1® oil I had been using previously. The vacuum got better and the ET’s got lower. I’ve got an engine on my car that’s got upwards of 670-some runs on it, and the thing is still running like the day I put in.”

By 1996 he teamed up with his brother Rodney and the pair would hit the Super Street class in a big way, taking 2nd place with the NMCA in 1998 and ’99 and running in the top 3 with NSCA/NMCA for the next 5 years. Te mid 90s into early 2000s were such a wild time in street car drags; cars were evolving, power ad ders changing and the whole move ment itself was growing. Tere were just so many things happening and most of the manufacturers wanted to be part of the action. Companies like Flowmaster came out with a 7-Second Club and the Lamberts were one of the first to run 7’s on a 10.5 tire, secur ing their position in the club!
Check out the twin turbo air inlets meticulously formed into the composite hood. Even the body color and stripe have been care fully applied to these areas. Check out this winning pass by Randy Lambert and his gorgeous new ride!
Continuing with their winning ways and blazing the trail for fast doorslam mer drags of today, in 2000 the Lam bert’s stepped up to Outlaw 10.5 at Virginia Motorsports Park and went undefeated, and then in 2005 they would capture the Super Street World Championship. As years passed, Ran dy would build a number of radial cars, many of them appearing in RPM, and then take an extended break from the sport, but he was always preoccu pied.
Randy Lambert’s new Outlaw 10.5/Pro Street ’69 Camaro is mind blowing! With a steel body tub, low stance and killer chassis work courtesy HFR Fabrication, this is one bad hot rod! Body and paint were completed by Paint By Bruce Mullins.
“I knew my true passion was in Outlaw 10.5 so my wife and I started to look around for a new race car. We decided on a 1969 Camaro since that was my very first car. So we found one and took it to Henry Fryfogle at HFR Fabrication to have him build it for us, and a year later we had it ready to go.”
Factory trim has been used in conjunction with realistic airbrushed trim and emblems, but it’s the iconic 1969-only Camaro side quarter panel trim that is icing on the cake.
Te Camaro is a production steel body and Lambert decided to build it true to the roots of street car drags and kept the steel roof, quarters and door frames with the front end, doors and deck lid being composite. Te wild yellow with black stripes and faux vi nyl roof paint was expertly completed by Bruce Mullins
Te HFR chassis is a 25.2 cert dou ble frame rail piece with cage bars that resemble a Jungle Jim on steroids. A mix of top-shelf tin and carbon work round out the bones of the interior complemented by the essential high tech equipment of today’s competi tive drag cars, including the FT600 digital dash and passenger kick-panel mounted electronics panel.
Cage work inside the Camaro is beyond top-shelf. A mix of carbon and tinwork work fills in the blanks and the Liberty 4-speed with Bruno drive and Browell bellhousing are front and center. An FT600 dash relays vitals and an array of electronics are on full display affixed to the passenger side kick panel.
Long gone are the rows of ana logue gauges in this technology driv en world where a driver can interface their laptop with the car’s onboard computer and out what the guy in the other lane had for breakfast… well not quite, but almost. Te meat and potatoes of the build are affixed between the rails of the Camaro in the form of a 540-inch big block with twin turbos. Starting with a billet block, J&E Performance installed a host of top parts including a Crower crankshaf swinging rods and a shaf commanding lifers.

Billy Brown likes “different”, and despite growing up and watching his dad drive and bracket race the classic Camaro, Malibu, or Chevy II, as he got older, like many of us, he wanted to forge a path of his own.
“When I was about 14 my dad took us to the local US13 Dragway at Delmar Delaware,” Brown explained. “Next thing you know he went out and bought a ’79 Z28 drag car and because of my interest, we ended up going to the track to watch him bracket race. Long sto ry short, I was hooked and my dad got back into collecting hotrods of all types.” His father only bracket raced, and eventually he and Billy
“Even with my dad out cars when I was able to drive, I still took my stock cars to the track to run them, dreaming that one day I would have a badass ride.” A few years passed and Bil ly was 18 when his dad asked him if he wanted to go racing. Billy knew he didn’t have any cars lef but said yes anyway, and when he got to the track to meet his dad, he found out he bought the Malibu back and gave it to Billy to race!
A few years back, with the intention of making just a few changes, Brown, along with Tommy Lynch stripped it to bare bones and started fresh, ending up with a fresh new truck from top to bottom.
would build a cool street/strip Malibu, getting it from a 14-second runner to a solid 10-sec ond performer with his dad at the wheel. To Billy’s surprise, though, his dad decided to sell all the cars and completely get out racing.
Afer selling the Malibu and a few other proj ects to fund raising a family, Brown would end up with a big block Ford Fox Mustang that he traded for work. Not being a Ford guy, he worked that into a deal for a small block S10 and was bracket racing nearly every weekend with it.
september 2022 | RPM Magazine80 Billy Brown’s “The Boogeyman” Sonoma pickup has morphed into this sleek low–slung predator, appropriately painted Destroyer Grey.
september 2022 | RPM Magazine82
With the kindness and financial sup port of a neighbor who wanted to be involved in racing, he improved the truck, won multiple events and even an NHRABeforeWally!long, that S10 would see a ni trous plate kit, 9-second hits and be running heads-up no-time grudge matches, and afer his very first grudge match (which he won), Brown swore he’d never go back to any other type of racing.Next would be a 2005 Pontiac GTO that he modified and hit the streets and track with, looking for grudge matches wherever he could find them. Te car quickly became known as “Freddy Kru ger”, but Billy took it way faster than he should have without the proper safety equipment, and that’s when he traded it for the Sonoma. A local no-time list racer wanted a street machine and Bil ly fell in love with having another fast truck, and that’s when the reign of Te Boogeyman began.
To meet the “All Glass All Steel” rules demanded by some of the grudge classes Brown runs, the body had to remain steel, so only the hood and bumper were swapped out for lighter parts. To shave weight off, Brown instead worked on top secret weight saving techniques throughout the truck.

Not having a street car type interior put the Sonoma up into the “Race Car” classes, where Brown was simply outgunned. As part of the complete over haul the truck saw that change starting with a Glasstech S10 dash and cov ered race seats. A Holley Pro dash, Innovative Racecraft steering wheel and carbon door panels were also used.
The 434 inch small block has been through some changes. First nitrous and then once the big blower was installed Brown knew the bottom end would not stand up. The next off-season he used the Dart Little M block and upgraded all the internals to match the power adder and power level he now had.
www.rpmmag.com | september 2022 87 RM RACING DOUBLE
“Now that I had the truck, since all the grudge cars have names, I decided to call it Te Boogeyman.” Brown had some changes to make before the truck came out under his ownership, namely the wheelie bars and two-tier wing had to go. Originally, with the 427 SBC and nitrous plate kit the Sonoma came with, grudge racing was fun, but not enough wins came Billy’s way as the truck was underpow ered.Te 427 would see a Fast XFI and new cam that really woke it up, and the body would also get a make over in the appearance depart ment, changing over to Brown’s favorite 1998 S10 front end along with a new fiberglass hood and lightweight bumper. Because the truck still had lexan windows and gutted interior, though, he was al ways pushed into the “race car” classes of grudge racing with faster cars where it was tough to compete.
With the hood off you can see the detail that went into not only the engine and blower install, but also the care taken to fill and prep all the holes in the firewall during the bodywork phase.

During the next off-season, Brown in tended on making a few tweaks, but be fore long it was game-on and the truck was completely stripped. “At this point the truck had nothing; no wires, no cage, no brake lines, nothing at all, just a bare frame and a cab,” he said. By the time all was said and done, with the help of good friend Tommy Lynch, Brown had a 100% new truck with 7.50 certified cage and full interior that was built to run fast. Te truck body also went under the knife again, getting extensive bodywork while being sure to meet the “All Glass, All Steel” class rules, and was painted Mopar De stroyer Grey.

Left to right: Gavin and Billy Brown pause before put ting The Boogeyman through its paces.
New power, a 434 nitroused small block with Holley EFI, was built to slip into to what was es sentially a brand new truck. Af ter initial struggles, Billy took an important win at the end of the season and raced the entire following year with the Caroli na No Time Race Series in the nitrous class. He had one prob lem…the big block cars! “I just couldn’t hold the big blocks off in the final rounds with my little small block. Tis didn’t sit well with me so I had a decision to make; either go big block or go boost.”Boost it was and a new F1X ProCharger was installed and tuned by Dave Hanlon.

www.rpmmag.com | september 2022 93
But, and there is always a but, although the new setup crushed it for power, the rest of the mo tor was not up to it and Billy had to go easy in 2021. For 2022, using the base 434, the Dart Little M block was cleaned up and a Callies Mag num crank was installed to spin Oliver Rods and JE boost pis tons. AFR 245 heads rest on top; they’ve been fire ringed, stuffed with titanium valves, Trend pushrods, T&D shaf rockers and PAC valve springs. A gear drive from New Era Racecraf was used for the blower and boost drives through an Edel brock Super Victor Jr intake.
As a No-Time Grudge rac er, Billy knows how to play the game and keeps his cards close to his chest, not letting too much information out into the public’s hands…at least not accurate in formation. So underestimating this blown small block Sonoma could cost you the race, because you just never know what Te Boogeyman has in store for you!
A BTE-cased Powerglide with Sonnax 1.58 gear set and FTI torque convertor sends the su percharged power rearward. With a complete rebuild us ing boost worthy parts, Brown came out swinging in 2022 and won his first event at Piedmont and went to the finals at the next shootout, but he had to do a purse split due to curfew. Te success continued as he went to the semis at the next Carolina No Time Boost class event and then won the 28s Gone Wild event at his home track, and won a few grudge races along the way! So what does Billy Brown have to say about all this? “ Te blower combo is awesome and I am no longer concerned about big block cars!”
